Seguin PD looks at high-tech training tool
Simulation system allows officers, community to explore law enforcement scenarios By Darren Dunn (Seguin) -- A bad day in the office for most of us means that we may go home in a grumpy mood. A bad day at the office for the men and women in law enforcement could mean that someone ends up dead. It’s a reality of the job, and it’s one of the reasons why law enforcement agencies spend some much time and effort making sure that their officers are well trained and that they are ready to handle any situation they encounter. The Seguin Police Department recently got a demonstration of a piece of technology that’s designed to help officers be ready for any scenario they might face. Ti Training recently brought its simulation training system to Seguin, and allowed officers and members of the community to have a chance to try it out. Todd Brown, a long time member of the law enforcement community, serves as the company’s vice president. He says his company provides this state-of-the-art training tool to agencies all across the country.
New Seguin City Councilman Joe Rea takes a turn in the police training simulator.
“We are Ti Training. We are out of Golden, Colorado. We produce interactive simulation systems for law enforcement training. We began our company in 2006, and to date, we have over 1,200 agencies here in the United States that utilize our simulation systems,” said Brown. See TRAINING Page 2

Community members get chance to play the role of police officer
Seguin Police Chief Terry Nichols battles virtual bad guys on a simulator. TRAINING continued from page 1
Seguin Police Chief Terry Nichols wanted his officers to see how they felt about the simulator, but he also invited some members of the community as well as the mayor and some members of the city council to the demonstration. Nichols says he wanted to give the public an opportunity to see some of the ways that they can go about training their officers. “I think it’s important for the community to see what we are trying to do at the department. I think that we are trying to leverage the latest technology out there for decision making, for use of force, for everything
that we do -- and technology, like the Ti systems that we are seeing today, is exactly that. Nichols says he wanted people to not just see this sophisticated piece of technology, but he also wanted them to witness the challenges that police officers face when they receive a call for service. He says the simulator can change the scenario in realtime based on feedback from the officer, and it shows how quickly things can go from good to deadly in less than a second. “That’s what is so neat about these types of systems. You can run the gamut, and one of them is what you talked about. (You)
can let our community know just how fast things happen. Some of you in the room actually got to participate and see that things can go bad real fast. Our police department, our law enforcement officers are professionals and they are trained to deal with this. But again, it can go bad real quick, and this allows us to practice in an environment where no one gets hurt and we can pause, rewind, look at what we did and see if we need to make a different decision. But it is nice for the community to be able to come in and see it as well and get experience with -- ‘ah, that’s why the police officer asked me to do X when I was on that traffic stop,”’ said Nichols.
Chief Nichols invited me to take a turn in the simulator. I have to admit that my heart began to race just thinking about it. The simulation called for me to respond to an alarm call at a warehouse, and there was already an officer on the scene, but he wasn’t responding to dispatch. When I rounded the virtual corner, I could see the officer on the ground with a visible wound, and a man kneeling next to him. The man picked up the gun. I ordered him to put it down, and he tried to explain that it was a misunderstanding. Here are the details of my interaction with the simulation and how it all played out. See TRAINING Page 3

Volunteers needed for today’s final Blue Santa wrap session
Sign-up is especially encouraged during early morning, afternoon slots By Cindy Aguirre-Herrera (Seguin) --- Now that Blue Santa has officially checked his list twice, his focus is now on getting all those gifts wrapped. Friday marked the deadline to submit applications for the Seguin Police Department Blue Santa Program. The program provides toys for underprivileged families in the community. Blue Santa’s Top Elf Hope Vasquez since late October, Blue Santa had been asking that families sign-up for assistance. Vasquez says now today is the final day for getting the job done and getting those gifts wrapped. She says Blue Santa is seeking the help of some community elves for today’s final wrap session from 10 a.m. to 7:30 p.m.
“We have more openings during the daytime so we really want to encourage all those retirees or people that are not working to come early so they can help start wrapping these gifts because we have a large session in the evening but the morning before 4 p.m., there’s a lot of openings that can still be filled out for some to come,” said Vasquez. Vasquez says Blue Santa has worked really hard to make sure that helping him is safe and hopes that people sign-up for one of the allotted times as soon as possible. “We have 33 tables and it’s pretty spaced out, 10 feet apart, practicing social distancing of course and hand sanitizer on top of each of the tables so we are pretty much on top of things, on sanitizing everything
as everybody uses a table. We are practicing and making sure everybody is safe so we definitely need their help to come and help us wrap all of these gifts and get them done by 7:30 p.m. Monday,” said Vasquez.
Those wishing to volunteer today can still call 830-401-2386 or email bluesanta@seguintexas.gov. The wrap session will be held in the Blue Santa’s headquarters located in the old Beall’s Department Store at Crossroads Mall.
officers experience all of that in a safe setting, so that they are able to better respond if they find themselves in a similar situation.
Part of Chief Nichols invitation for the demonstration included members of the Community Coalition. The coalition is a group that has been working behind the scenes in Seguin to begin to address the relationship between police officers and the African-American community. It is still a relatively small group, by design, that includes some elected officials, law enforcement leaders, members of the Black Lives Matter movement, and local pastors from some historically Black churches in Seguin.
the opposite perspective. Right now, you see the scenario from the officer’s perspective, but Tolbert said what officers could also experience in the training is watching from the perspective of the people they might encounter. Chief Nichols liked the idea, as did Brown, who said that he would be sharing that idea with the folks who put together those videos at his company.
Seguin PD gets training in real life scenarios via simulator

Even though I had my gun pointed at the man, he still fired first, and it was an intense demonstration about how little time officers have to react to a clearly deadly situation. This simulator lets the
Brown says their simulation systems can be used for a number of training purposes, including as a tool to educate the public about the work of law enforcement professionals. “I guess the biggest takeaway that I hope that they learn is that -- how hard law enforcement agencies are trying to train their officers to safely interact with the public on a daily basis. Simulation based technology is a way for them to do that. (They can) make a mistake in a safe environment, maybe repeat the scenario with corrected behavior, so that the officer can learn the most effective decisionmaking tools possible and that they can then take with them out on the street,” said Brown.
Rashad Tolbert, president of the Black Student Union (BSU) at Texas Lutheran University is part of the coalition. He also took a turn in the simulator (admittedly, he did a better job than I did). Tolbert says he sees how this tool could be beneficial, but he also asked if they had ever considered creating scenarios that showed
Chief Nichols says they are considering purchasing the simulation system, and adding it to the training tools and resources that it already provides. The basic system costs as little as $42,000 and can be tens-of-thousands of dollars more based on additional features. Nichols says if they purchase the system, it could also be used for training for both officers and the community.

Ten TDs not enough for Matadors in season-ending loss to Hendrickson
(Seguin) - On a night when both offenses moved the ball and lit up the scoreboard with little resistance, two great defensive plays in the closing seconds proved the difference as Pflugerville-Hendrickson handed Seguin a 74-70 loss in the 5A Division I bi-district playoffs Friday at Matador Stadium After the Hawks took the lead on a Jasiya Demps touchdown run with 1:02 to play, the Mats drove from their own 30-yard line to the Hendrickson 16 and faced third-andone with just 14 seconds left. Defensive end Aiden Keith sacked Seguin quarterback Micah Rodriguez for a 12-yard loss at the 28, and linebacker Josh Alvarado did the same on the next play to turn the Matadors over on downs with just three seconds remaining.
That was the first possession Seguin failed to score on in the second half. Aside from a punt on the opening drive of the game and the final possesion of each half, the Matadors produced 10 touchdowns to hit the 70-point mark for the second straight week. Marquis Washington ran 193 yards and scored five total touchdowns in Friday’s playoff loss at Matador See MATADORS Page5 Stadium. His season total of 1,324 rushing yards is the most by a Matador this century. Photo by Andie Rangel.

Seguin scores 70 in 2nd straight game, comes up short in bi-district playoffs
MATADORS continued from Page 4 Seguin was unable to end the drought of playoff wins dating back to 1988, but head coach Travis Bush says the 2020 team did everything in its power to have a chance to kick down that door.
“This was the most close-knit team I’ve been around in 21 years of coaching, and that showed tonight,” Bush said. “I can’t be more proud of the way they fought, blow for blow again like last week. It boiled down to one more play, and hats off to Hendrickson - they made one more play than we did.” Rodriguez went 31-40 through the air for 378 yards and threw four touchdown passes, lifting his single-season school record to 35. Three of those scoring strikes went to Tristan Moreno, for six, 41, and 18 yards. Moreno pulled in 14 receptions for 208 yards, and also broke loose for a 74yard touchdown run with 7:27 left in the fourth quarter. Senior tailback Marques Washington ran for 193 yards on 21 carries and found the end zone five times. He scored four rushing touchdowns, including a 47-yarder two plays after Allen Martinez recovered a fumble that was forced by Evrin Contreras. Washington also pulled in a 22-yard touchdown catch on a throw from Rodriguez in the third period. Fullback Michael Martinez jumped over the pile for a one-yard touchdown run midway through the second quarter. Alex Concepcion made a spectacular onehand catch for a two-point conversion on a Rodriguez throw after Moreno’s long touchdown run and finished the night with seven receptions for 86 yards. Garrett Stiles went 8-9 on PAT kicks. The Matadors piled up 661 yards of total offense on the night. Hendrickson topped that mark with 765. In addition to Rodriguez breaking the single-season program record for

US Records Over 3,000 COVID Deaths For Second Day in A Row (Undated) -- The U.S. is recording another day of more than three-thousand coronavirus deaths. Wednesday was the first day the country had crossed that tragic marker since the pandemic began. The COVID Tracking Project also says coronavirus hospitalizations are at record highs once again. Over 107-thousand Americans are in the hospital due to the respiratory illness. Over 292-thousand Americans have died from COVID-19. CDC: COVID Death Toll Likely To Exceed 9/11 For 60 Days (Washington, DC) -- The head of the CDC says the pandemic death toll will likely exceed that of 9/11 every day for the next two months at least. More than three-thousand Americans died Wednesday from COVID-19, which is more than the 29-hundred people who died on 9/11 or 24-hundred that died in the attack on Pearl Harbor. Robert Redfield says an incoming vaccine will not impact those numbers in the next 60 days. He says it’s important for Americans to continue to follow safety precautions until the vaccine is widely available. Virginia Starting COVID Curfew Next Week (Richmond, VA) -- People in Virginia are being urged to stay home during the overnight hours starting Monday. Governor Ralph Northam issued a new order calling for a midnight to five a.m. curfew to slow the spread of the coronavirus. That doesn’t include those working, needing medical

FDA Panel Recommends Pfizer’s COVID-19 Vaccine For Emergency Use (Silver Spring, MD) -- An FDA panel is recommending emergency use authorization for Pfizer’s [[ FYE-zers ]] and BioNTech’s [[ BYE-on-techs ]] COVID-19 vaccine. The decision clears the way for the FDA to grant emergency approval, paving the way for millions of Americans to get vaccinated to protect themselves from the coronavirus that has spread around the world. A vaccine being approved in less than a year after most people first learned of the novel coronavirus is a monumental achievement. The first people to be vaccinated will be health care workers and those most at risk, including patients in long-term senior care facilities. FDA Approves First Non-Prescription Home COVID-19 Test (Washington, DC) -- The F-D-A is giving emergency approval to the first non-prescription home COVID-19 test.
