Luminarias light the way this holiday season

Seguin Conservation Society holds luminaria, raffle fundraiser By Cindy Aguirre-Herrera

kind of realized that we couldn’t have our Tour of Homes this year due to the COVID situation and we were brainstorming with ideas and we kind of thought, at the time, for people to be out during the holidays and look at the decorations and see what is going on and we thought this was a good way to showcase Seguin’s history by having luminarias in front of our properties and kind of honor and remember and celebrate those who are important to us and to our community,” said Tschoepe.

(Seguin) -- The Seguin Conversation Society is giving you an opportunity to support its final and only fundraisers of 2020. Steve Tschoepe, of the Seguin Conservation Society, says this week is the final week to purchase your tickets for the group’s holiday raffle. He says many great items have been pulled together to create three Seguin gift baskets. “We have three fantastic baskets that have been put together by our board members who have bought and sought out donations and they are all Seguin products. We have pecans. We have gift certificates. We have t-shirts. We have glasses. We have mugs. We have Seguin coffee. We have a variety of things in these baskets and they are all three very interesting,” said Tschoepe. Tickets for the raffle are $2 each or six for $10. In addition to its raffle, Tschoepe says several luminarias are also available for purchase. He says the luminarias all month long have been lighting up Seguin Conservation Society properties around town. “The luminaria project started out after we

He says the luminarias will continue to be turned on every weekend in December. He says the properties make a great place to visit this holiday season. “It’s just something different and we expect it now to become a tradition. We’ve had great feedback on the luminarias and we have them in front of our First Church, across the front of our Log Cabin, in front of the Doll House. Of course with the Texas Theatre, inside the theatre, we have kind of a Christmas tree luminaria and then we have our traditional Christmas tree in another window but we just want people to come by and see our beautiful landmarks and maybe take a picture in front of them too,” said Tschoepe. Guadalupe County gives update on COVID-19 case numbers, potential arrival for vaccine By Cindy Aguirre-Herrera

will be the medical providers that signed up to distribute that. Those will be the folks that will get that first,” said Pinder.

(Seguin) -- Guadalupe County continues to keep a close on the rising COVID-19 cases in the area. Patrick Pinder, the Guadalupe County emergency management coordinator assigned to the county’s COVID-19 response, shared the latest numbers during Tuesday’s meeting of the Guadalupe County Commissioners Court. “We have 202 confirmed active cases in the county; 126 probable active cases in the county; 750 probable recovered cases in the county. We have 4, 714 people who have recovered. We have 47 deaths reported in Guadalupe County. We have 5,839 cases total reported in the county and we have 110 to be determined. GRMC notified me this morning (Tuesday) that they have 24 patients in the hospital. Last week, on Thursday, they had 18. (Monday), they had 28. Today, (Tuesday), they are at 24 so you can see that the number has kind of gone up and it’s going down a little bit. Their seven day average is 23 as of this morning (Tuesday) and they are still admitting four people in the hospital daily,” said Pinder. In sharing the latest numbers, Pinder was also able to better explain some of the categories that are used by the Texas Department of State Health Services in its reporting. “I just kind of want to go over real quick with the probable and confirmed active, I know there has been some questions so on the probable active, those are people who have been tested with a rapid test. I got confirmation on that. The state doesn’t see them as the PCR test, basically the nasal swab. So the nasal swab tests are in the confirmed active case. The rapid test are in the probable active case. That’s the difference in the two,” said Pinder. When asked about the arrival and distribution of the COVID-19 vaccine in the county, Pinder helped outline the projection for the vaccine’s arrival. He says the information is based on his recent discussion with Robert Haynes, the

While the county awaits the vaccine, Guadalupe County Judge Kyle Kutscher assures the local business community of his commitment to keep doors open as long as they are allowed.

chief executive officer for Guadalupe Regional Medical Center. “When Mr. (Robert) Haynes talked to us last week, the hospital whenever allocation comes to Guadalupe county, the hospital has already signed up for their allocation so whenever vaccines do make it to this area, those providers who have signed up for that will get the initial push. Those are probably going to go to the medical providers, the hospitals, first responders, nursing homes. Those will be your primary people who get those first and then whenever they get some more vaccines in, those will then be pushed out to the second and third waves,” said Pinder. Ultimately, however, Pinder says the number of vaccines to be received here in Guadalupe County will be based off its current number of positive cases. “It’s going to be dependent on the cases. So, San Antonio obviously got their first packages in yesterday (Monday). I think they were delivered 19,000 vaccines yesterday (Monday). They are supposed to get an additional delivery today (Tuesday). I think up to 220,000 vaccines were supposed to be delivered in the state of Texas. I think that’s all Texas is getting in this first wave. So, we probably won’t see anymore coming in for the next week or two. Guadalupe County probably won’t see any until the January or February timeframe and when we do get those, those

“I have another mayor’s call at the end of this week. Some of the conversations that are going on and questions from the chamber of commerce and the business community is, is there going to be another reduction in occupancy and allowance? In Governor Abbott’s (executive) order GA32, it talks about referencing 15 percent of total hospital capacity being dedicated to COVID as being the triggering point where in these trauma service areas which were included in San Antonio with about 18 or 20 other counties, if hospital capacity is over 15 percent dedicated to COVID, then supposed to reduce occupancy within restaurants down to 50 percent and all that stuff. All those conversations are being had out in the public because they are concerned about it. I just want to reassure the public that we are going to do everything we possibly can with the mayors and municipalities, the hospital, the county to support businesses and not try to limit their occupancy but we are just going to have to continue to communicate with them and work with them so we can be safe as possible -- still finding a balance and letting them operate,” said Kutscher. Although, Guadalupe County is reporting 47 deaths, a total of 87 deaths is what is currently being reported on the DSHS website. The discrepancy between these two numbers is said to be the result of a lag in reporting by the state. Meanwhile, county officials continue to encourage residents to wear a mask when they go out, to practice social distancing whenever they can, and to wash their hands frequently.

(Seguin) -- Blue Santa is ready to unpack his gift bag. Today and Thursday marks distribution day for the Seguin Police Department’s Blue Santa Program. Hope Vasquez, Blue Santa’s top elf, says after weeks of collecting and wrapping, Blue Santa is finally ready to aid families in need this holiday season. She says because of the pandemic, things will be a bit different. “We are going to have a curbside service. No need to get off of your vehicle. There will be parking spaces in the parking lot to accommodate at least 10 cars at a time. They just need to be ready and have their trunk open, have their little blue slip with them and have their driver’s license so they can claim and confirm that they are getting the correct bag. So, it will be fast for us to expedite the gifts to their vehicle. Again, they don’t need to get off. They just park and we’ll be keeping our eyes open when those cars arrive and we just have runners (to the vehicles).” Vasquez says she is also looking for a few high school or Texas Lutheran University students willing to serve as runners and help deliver the gifts to the vehicles. All they have to do is show up between the distribution times of noon and 7:30 pm.

Hope Vasquez, Blue Santa’s top elf, sorts out gifts for local children this holiday season. After working The gifts can be picked up outside of this year’s Blue Santa workshop located in the overtime in getting gifts wrapped, Blue Santa is set old Beall’s Department Store near Burke’s in Crossroads Mall. The mall is located at 1500 E. Court St. to deliver those gifts today and Thursday.

Final week to purchase luminarias, raffle tickets

LUMINARIAS continued from page 1 Tschoepe says proceeds from the fundraisers go back to support the conversation and its historic properties.

“We always appreciate the community’s support. These really are the first fundraisers that we’ve had in 2020. We did not have a birthday party. Like at the Texas, we did not have a parade viewing. We didn’t have any events at the Texas pretty much all year. We ended up doing a few things but they were minimal attendance and we didn’t have our Mother, Daughter Tea. Other than, our membership contributing some funds, via the mail, we are struggling but surviving,” said Tschoepe.

“They are just $10 each and they can still do one. They will be lit this week and after Christmas,” said Tschoepe. “You can contact me personally at my cell phone 830-401-1971 or you can write them down and send a check to the Seguin Conservation Society P.O. 245 Seguin, Texas.” Tschoepe says support from the community is needed more than ever and encourages folks to get their raffle tickets or luminarias as soon as possible.

Edith Lange, Janet Wolber and Carol Durben show off one of the three Seguin gift baskets and cutting boards being given away during the Seguin Conservation Society holiday raffle.

Again, raffle tickets can be purchased from any conservation society member, at Gift & Gourmet or by calling Tschoepe at 830-401-1971. Tickets will be sold until noon Friday. The drawing will be held later in the day via Facebook Live.

from Harlandale High School. She was known for her lovely soprano voice and her leading roles in drama. These interests continued in college at Southwest Texas State Teacher’s College (now Texas State University), where she was honored as a Gaillardian. Following graduation, her first teaching assignment was in Donna, Texas, at the tender age of 19. There she met Coach Woodrow Isham, who became her husband in 1947. She continued teaching until the birth of their only daughter, Susannah Lee Isham Willms. Glenna was a stay at home mom until Susannah started school, at which time she returned to teaching. Upon earning his Bachelors of Science Degree, he embarked on a teaching career that lasted 38 years, most notably being remembered for teaching high school algebra. Charlie had a lifelong passion for horses which started not long after he learned to walk. At six years of age, his mother made him a burlap cotton picking sack and he picked cotton in the field alongside his father to earn fifteen dollars to buy his first horse, a bay mare. From that first little bay mare, Charlie began a career in horses that lasted his entire life. This love of horses led him first into training and showing cutters. After visiting Mott Headley’s paint horse operation, Charlie got hooked on “colored” horses which lead to a very active involvement with the American Paint Horse Association and the Pinto Horse Association of America. He showed numerous horses in both associations, earning titles all the way up to World Champion. Since 1977, Charlie has been an APHA Lifetime Member. He also, carried judges’ cards in several breed associations. His service as a judge in APHA, for 40 years, earned him the APHA Judge Emeritus Award in 2018. With 30 years as a judge in PtHA, he was a 2016 inductee into the Pinto Heritage Foundation as a professional horseman. Q Can I still plant my annuals? :

A: Cool season annuals are still available in the local nurseries. In fact, I have been holding off planting my own since our weather has been so warm. You also should plant your spring-flowering bulbs this month, but don’t plant too deep. Make sure your flower beds have enough moisture. Check the soil moisture with your finger according to Doug Welsh in his Texas Garden Almanac. Cool to the touch means adequate moisture, while warm and dry means water is needed.

When do I bring in the potted plants which have Qbeen living outside? :

A: If you are like me, you wait until the weather person forecasts a freeze.

Bring the plants onto the porch or in a place where you can easily protect them from freezing. I usually bring my orchid plants in the house and put them under grow lights. If you have plumaria, place them in the garage or a place where they won’t freeze. The Houston Chronicle suggests removing the remaining plumaria leaves by cutting them an inch from the trunk. You can leave the plants in their pots or take them out, remove the excess dirt, trim the root ball to a desirable size, and place a plastic bag around the root ball. If you have your plumaria growing in the ground, dig them up and store them. The Chronicle also suggests that this dormancy period is a good time to make cuttings. If your plants are young or small, a cup of water a month will keep them from drying out too much during dormancy.

Qcare for it?

: Someone always gives me a holiday plant. How do I

A: First of all, make sure your plant has enough light. If you have natural light,

this means at least six hours. If you only have fluorescent, than twice as much. The temperature should be around 68 to 72 degrees F. Do not place the plant under an airflow or next to a heater or fireplace. Water when the soil feels dry to a depth of one to two inches. However, do not overwater or keep the soil saturated. Most holiday plants come with decorative wrapping or containers which can hold water. Make sure you remove those when you water and let the plant drain. Fertilize only once during the holidays. Check to make sure that there are no insects on the plants. Living Christmas trees also need to be in bright natural light. Welsh suggests monitoring the soil moisture daily and getting the tree back outdoors within two to three weeks. The tree should be planted soon after so that it will have new roots before the heat of the next summer.

F

YI: Bird baths should be refilled daily throughout the winter to provide for our birds and squirrels, as well as all those visiting raccoons, possums, armadillos and foxes.
