Christian Cupboard Holiday Food Drive still underway Cindy Aguirre-Herrera

Helping you find the right house to call HOME. Derek Slafka 830-515-9329
(Seguin) -- It might be the day after Christmas, but it doesn’t mean that the season of giving has stopped. In fact, volunteers at the Christian Cupboard, Seguin’s food pantry, are hoping to continue the spirit of giving at least through the end of its holiday food drive on Sunday, Dec. 31. Regina Lee, the director for the Christian Cupboard, says she wants to continue what she describes as a great year of giving and receiving for the local food pantry. She says when it comes to food, the cupboard will take it all. “Our drive is through Dec. 31 and of course, we are all year round but this is our biggest push for food and remember it’s a big push for food and we get several pounds of food and it only last through February and I don’t know if it’s going to last that long this year,” said Lee. Lee says the giving season has been incredible for the cupboard. However an influx of new families in Seguin has caused the food pantry to serve up to 800 clients each month. She says this demand for food has led them to lean on the community a little bit more. Lee says the growing homeless community also warrants even more donations than ever. “Remember, we also have homeless people in our area. They have to be taken care of also. They are taken care of on a different scale and a different way because I’m talking about homeless people who have no place to cook it or to store food. Giving, pg. 3

Stuffed animals to have sleepover at local library Cindy Aguirre-Herrera
(Seguin) -- Even our beloved stuffed animals need a night away to spend with some new friends. Local kids are invited to grab their "stuffy's' favorite pair of pajamas and drop them off tonight at the Seguin Public Library. Library Director Silvia Christy says the library will be hosting its annual Stuffed Animal Sleepover & Pajama Storytime. "The kids are going to come in to story time with the parents and they are going to bring a stuffed
animal. Preferably not their favorite one that they can't sleep without but one that can stay here overnight and the stuffed animals are going to have a blast. We will take pictures of the shenignans they get into and then, the next day, they come to retrieve their little stuffed animals," said Christy. Although they will be missed, Christy guarantees kids will enjoy picking them up the next day and hearing all about their library adventures.
Plus, she says kids will be invited over for some library fun making the goodbye much easier. "During the day, when they bring their little toys, there will be a little story time. There will be activities and games for the kids that night. We've done it several times already and there is always a big response for that," said Christy. The event begins today at 6 p.m. All ages are welcome. Stuffed animals will be available for pickup the next day on Thursday from 9 a.m. to noon.

Five year expansion project of I-10 East in Guadalupe County to begin soon (Guadalupe County) -- Here's an advance warning for commuters who utilize a highway on the county's east end. The Texas Department of Transportation has announced that a contractor is set to begin a widening and safety improvement project on I-10 between FM 464 and SH 130. They say this project will also include resurfacing operations between SH 123 and SH 130, east of Seguin. The combined project is set to begin Jan. 8, 2024. The project awarded to Webber, LLC of New Braunfels will cost $245,194,039 and will consist of reconstructing the main lanes by expanding the existing four lanes to six lanes. The project will also include improvements to entrance/exit ramps, the rehabilitation of existing structures as well as a one way frontage road conversion.
Giving, continued. So, remember those little cans of Vienna sausages and the Spam you have, the little fruit cups, crackers and even water. Water, juice cans, sodas all that stuff is vital and will be used,” said Lee. Lee says food, however, is not the only thing needed to help keep their shelves stocked. Lee says the needs of the community are growing “Within the food drive also which is the main thing is food but if you really want to think outside the box, give me packs of toilet paper, bars of soap, shampoo, laundry detergent

Signage, as well as digital message boards, will be placed in the area to notify the traveling public of the upcoming construction. Motorists are encouraged to use an alternate route and avoid the work zone, if possible. The estimated completion date is Fall 2029.
– basic things you use at home are the things that we actually give out and occasionally people will ask. Somebody is between paychecks or they someone come into their home unexpectedly. So, they will ask for toiletries and we will give out toiletries when we have them. We try to keep them on the shelves,” said Lee. Lee encourages folks to give, however, they can. She says every can adds up just like every dollar. If the cans are too heavy, give us the money. Two dollars goes a long way for us believe it or not. We shop local. We shop Walmart. We shop HEB. We can go to Arlan’s for
different things,” said Lee. Lee says food also doesn’t have to come straight from the supermarket. She says whether it’s extra deer meat or a fruitful garden, the Christian Cupboard will take the food. “We try to give eggs accordingly and I have a couple of people who have chickens, and they will bring eggs. If you can eat it and it’s decent, I’m giving it out,” said Lee. Other items needed at the food pantry include recycled bags, egg cartons, detergent, fresh fruits and vegetables, breads and milk. Lee says even items such as sugar and flour can be donated. She says these items will be divided up by volunteers and provided to families. Donations to the Christian Cupboard can be made Mondays through Thursdays from 9 to 11:30 a.m. Doors are also open every first and third Saturdays of the month. A drop off box for non-glass and nonperishable food items is available 24/7. The drop off box is located on the north end of the building. The food pantry is located at 516 N. Camp St. Monetary donations can also be made by visiting www. christiancupboardofseguin.org. Food donations can also be dropped off in the lobby of Seguin Radio KWED through Friday, Dec. 29.

Woody was born on September 30, 1966 in Seguin to Francis M. (Mills) and Glenn M. Talley. He loved to cook and share his dishes with friends and family as well as spend hours building and crafting beautifully detailed works of art from mediums including scale modeling, woodworking, wood-burning and painting that he’d gift to those he loved. Woody was a private man who kept his circle small, close and safe; and he enjoyed the peace of living a simple life. Holiday Season Can Boost Stress Levels (Undated) -- Christmas may be over but it still may have taken a toll on your mental health. Experts say that often comes from placing expectations on yourself to do everything, leading many to feel overwhelmed. According to the American Psychological Association, nearly 90 percent of people surveyed said they felt stressed out during the holidays. Mixed Support For South Dakota Abortion Amendment (Pierre, SD) -- A new poll shows South Dakotans have mixed support for the state’s abortion amendment on the upcoming 2024 ballot. It would enshrine abortion rights in the South Dakota Constitution, superseding a state abortion ban enacted when the U.S. Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade in June 2022. The poll of 500 registered voters, sponsored by South Dakota News Watch, shows that over 45 percent of respondents support the proposed measure. More than the 43 percent said they oppose the change, but it’s within the poll’s margin of error of four-point-five percent. The remaining voters, totaling about eleven percent, say they’re undecided. University Of Montana Receives $4M For Biomedical Innovation (Missoula, MT) -- The University of Montana is using a four-million dollar reward to address unmet medical needs across the U.S. The four-year Research Evaluation and Commercialization Hub award is from the National Institutes of Health. University officials say the award will help establish the L.S. Skaggs Institute for Health Innovation-Research Evaluation and Commercialization Hub. This will advance biomedical innovation across Montana, Alaska, Idaho and Wyoming. The university also hopes the award will help academic innovators develop new medical products to help patients who are struggling with un-treatable illnesses. Toxic Algae Found In WA State (King County, WA) -- Toxic algae blooms are back, this time in King County, Washington lakes, ponds and streams. Seattle & King County Public Health announced that people and pets should stay out of the water. Algae is natural, but sometimes the lake’s sediment or human pollution runoff and sunlight can trigger a bloom. They can be harmful to humans and lethal to pets, who should not drink the water or even get it on their fur. Public Health advised “When in doubt, stay out.”
