Guadalupe Regional Medical Foundation lands large contribution to help end 2020 on a positve By Cindy Aguirre-Herrera
(Seguin) – Patients at Guadalupe Regional Medical Center no longer have to wait for the lab results that they need. Health officials at the GRMC say they are thankful to Baptist Health Foundation of San Antonio for “blessing” the GRMC lab with a $140,000 grant for lab testing equipment, equipment they say will now expedite results. Cody Knowlton, Baptist Health Foundation president and CEO, says the foundation is committed to serving those who serve others.
Cody Knowlton, Baptist Health Foundation president and CEO, shares the announcement of a $140,000 grant with employees of Guadalupe Regional Medical Center. Money to be used to expedite test results in the hospital lab.
“The Baptist Health Foundation was formed about 17 years ago when the Baptist Health System sold and became a for profit institution and so the money from that sale funded a foundation that does nothing but give money away in an eight-county area including Guadalupe County for health-related needs and causes and so we do that to honor our Baptist heritage and to give God the glory for that,” said Knowlton. “This is one of well over 100 grants that we are making this year. It’s for $140,000 to the Guadalupe Regional Medical Center and it’s going to support a
lab that is going to do testing for tuberculosis, for COVID, for other venereal type diseases and so it will be a rapid test type situation so the foundation approached us and said, ‘could you help do this?’ And we looked at it and said, ‘we think it’s a good fit’ and we were happy and honored to do it.” Knowlton says the Guadalupe Regional Medical Foundation has proven that with a little help, it can improve the health and care of patients at GRMC. “First and foremost, we have a track record with this organization. This would have been the fifth grant that we have made to this organization since 2007. We knew it was a great organization. They do great work here. The fact that it’s in Guadalupe County also makes a difference because obviously a lot of the non-profits that we support are in Bexar County and Comal County and so Guadalupe County and those surrounding counties don’t have a ton of non-profits and so when we get a good non-profit that does good work, we want to support them,” said Knowlton. Guadalupe County hires new HR director By Cindy Aguirre-Herrera
(Seguin) – Guadalupe County will soon welcome a new human resources director. The Guadalupe County Commissioners Court recently appointed Leticia Mejia as the county’s new HR director. Mejia was selected from a pool of applicants all looking to fill the shoes of longtime HR Director Cheraun Blankenship. Blankenship, who was eligible for retirement in years with the county, has moved on and has accepted a job with the Texas Association of Counties. Guadalupe County Judge Kyle Kutscher says Mejia brings years of experience to the county’s operation. “Leticia Mejia was selected by the court as the new human resources director for the county. Ms. Mejia comes from Bexar County Sheriff’s Office with experience in HR, is an HR supervisor, has quite a bit of education and then based on her interviews has a passion for creating policies and supporting and promoting employment within the agency or entity that she is involved in which is why I think a lot of the court wanted to go that direction. The hiring of Mejia, however, did not come unanimously. Despite the 5 to 3 vote, Kutscher says he knows Mejia will be an important asset to the county. “As stated, myself and Commissioner Engelke cast dissenting votes just because we had two individuals within the current HR department that applied and we thought it was close but Commissioner Engelke and myself thought that the opportunity should have been given to a current county employee that had been here for 10 years that had a really good interview and that already has a lot of those partnerships and relationships built with department heads, elected officials that could kind of use what we have already done at the county as a launching pad to make some improvements but now that the court has made the selection, we are all committed to supporting Ms. Mejia and making sure she is successful in the new HR position,” said Kutscher. Mejia begins her new role as HR director on Jan. 4.

Guadalupe Regional Medical Center receives COVID-19 vaccine for medical providers plus staff
(Seguin) -- Guadalupe Regional Medical Center has received a shipment of 800 Moderna COVID-19 vaccinations through a distribution program run by the State. The vaccinations arrived at GRMC on Wednesday. Hospital officials say medical personnel that provide direct patient care are the highest priority for this initial distribution.
Together, Guadalupe Regional Medical Center and Guadalupe Regional Medical Group employ over 800 people that have been on the frontline of caring for COVID-19 patients during the ongoing pandemic. They say they anticipate that this initial COVID-19 vaccine shipment will be completely distributed to their healthcare providers. Guadalupe Regional Medical Center encourages everyone to discuss with their family practice providers whether they should get vaccinated for COVID-19. GRMC has no information on COVID-19 vaccination availability for the general public. Officials say Guadalupe Regional Medical Center is committed to providing our community with updated information as warranted during this challenging time. Information and resources can be obtained by visiting our website at www.grmedcenter.com.

Lab testing to benefit from $140,000 grant from Baptist Health Foundation of San Antonio
GRMC continued from Page 1
Among those set to utilize the new equipment, is Janelle Tharp, the executive director of women’s services. Tharp says having on the spot results will help with the care of mothers and their babies. “This money for the lab was going to help our department in testing our moms for group b strep and we will get results back immediately. There won’t be any lag time and that way we will be able to treat the moms and the babies right away. We treat them regardless. We go ahead and give them the penicillin and they don’t necessarily need it so we are treating them with something that they don’t necessarily need because of the safety of the baby. But by doing this, we will know which ones we need to treat,” said Tharp.
Nicole Patek, executive director of emergency services, says patients in the ER will especially benefit. She says fast results are critical during medical emergencies. “The money today is going to help the ER population so any person that comes in with like symptoms of abdominal pain or cramping, that we have to do sexually transmitted infection testing similar to the birthing center, we will be able to get that result back today like the same time during their visit so we will know exactly how to treat that patient. Right now, some patients get treated based on their symptoms and what the doctor assesses so they could be getting antibiotics that they do need or sometimes they don’t get the antibiotics and they wait the two to three days and then we have to call the patient back and start them on
the antibiotics,” said Patek.
Overseeing the scope of lab tests and their results is Maria Corriveau, director of the GRMC lab. Corriveau says having results for potentially high-risk conditions plays a major role in getting down to the root of the problem and helping patients heal. “Currently, a lot of our STD testing goes to our reference lab in California. Due to the pandemic, a lot of our results are taking, I want to say seven to 10 days to come back. What this money is going to allow is to be able to give patients these results the same day,” said Corriveau. Those wishing to end their year by giving are encouraged to donate to the Guadalupe Regional Medical Foundation. Donations can be made by visiting grmedfoundation.org.

The numbers were reported after the U.S. crossed 18-million total infections over the course of the pandemic.

Surgeon General Talks New Strain Of COVID
(Washington, DC) -- The U.S. Surgeon General says the new strain of coronavirus found in the UK doesn’t mean the virus is more dangerous or even more contagious. Dr. Jerome Adams noted he talked about the new strain with Dr. Francis Collins, the director of the National Institutes of Health. Adams said the new mutation could have come from a super spreader event. Adams also said Dr. Collins mentioned there’s no indication that coronavirus vaccines won’t fight it. However, Adams noted that the new strain doesn’t change the basic public health measures the nation and world have been following since the pandemic started.

That’s because a new study from Serta Simmons Bedding found Americans collectively lost 30 billion hours of sleep since the coronavirus pandemic started. About 139 million Americans admitted the pandemic led to them becoming a night owl and staying up later than normal. Also, more than one in two said they spent extra time in their

He said the choices people make during the holidays could literally save lives. Hospitals in Southern California are filling up as coronavirus cases surge in the region.
