Message from the Head of School Dear Parents, Last but not least, we are excited to be moving into our new Kindergarten facility for Term 2. This purpose built facility is bright and light and will enhance the Play Based Learning approach for our Kindy students.
Welcome to the September edition of our Newsletter. We are basking in the glow of our new Grade 3-5 skylight. The collaborative space has been transformed by the introduction of more natural light into the surroundings and even makes the space seem larger.
We are so thankful for each family that has chosen to partner with our school in the education of their child(ren). Like a family, there are challenges along the way, but may we continue to choose to trust each other and ask the Lord to give us the strength to be excellent examples for our children to follow.
We recently received final results from the completion of our first IGCSE class. We are very proud of the students and the pleasing results they achieved. September 15-17 our hard-working teachers met to complete the Project Based Learning certificate offered by PBL Works. Teachers were able to learn and work collaboratively on PBL projects that will be implemented across this year.
Respectfully, Tim Heading
After an afternoon training session with the Peekapak representative, teachers have also been busy implementing this Social Emotional Learning program once/twice per week. Why not ask your child what they learnt this week?

STUDENTS' ACHIEVEMENT
Congratulations!
STUDENTS' ACHIEVEMENT The 17th World Children's Haiku Contest Congratulations, Jia Ning (Gr.10), Livy (Gr.7), and Jasmine (Gr.7) for their achievements at Japan Airlines (JAL) Foundation’s "17th World Children Haiku” contest 2022!
Originating from Japan, Haiku is the shortest form of poetry in the world. JAL FOUNDATION biennially organizes the 'World Children's Haiku' Contest, and the theme of the 17th contest this year is ' Towns '.
This year, our students achieved grand prizes as the Indonesia Regional Winners in the JAL Foundation competition. Through the theme, “Towns,” students portrayed their art skills and channeled their literacy skills. They learned Japanese poetry and translated the lyrics into English, which were later showcased in their artworks.
JIA NING W. (JAL GRAND PRIZE)
Through the contest, children are given the opportunity to compose haiku that will encompass their memories. The experience of composing haiku will also become a part of their pleasant memories of their childhood.

Social-Emotional Learning
WHY IS IT IMPORTANT FOR OUR CHILDREN?
SEL, Social-Emotional Learning, is an important aspect of our school life in SPH PV. Especially after going through the past two years in a pandemic, SEL has become ever more important for our students' well-being.
Students are introduced to different characters and stories that help them understand the different SEL topics and real-life scenarios related to them. We have been focusing on selfregulation as our first unit of the year, where students learn about different emotions and how to regulate themselves as they experience those emotions.
SEL allows students to build healthy identities, manage emotions, feel and show empathy for others, establish healthy relationships, and make responsible and caring decisions. SEL enables our students to become better leaders, teammates and also followers of Christ as we learn how to love others well and work with others as well as regulating ourselves.
We hope to promote social and emotional growth as we introduce more stories that will move our students' hearts and allow them to understand what it means to be emotionally and socially mature, thus understanding themselves and others better.
We are using our new SEL curriculum, Peekapak, in order to promote these different SEL skills.
Blessings, So Yeon, Kim SEL Coordinator

STUDENT COUNCIL
Student Council 22/23
A NOTE FROM THE PRESIDENT We'd like to announce the PV Student Council for this school year. Leadership was in place at the end of last school year, but elections for class representatives took place on September 7. Congrats to all of the new members! It was fantastic to hear what each student had to say and what they were passionate about when I read their applications or interviewed them. They have already inspired and motivated me, both as a leader and personally as well. I’m looking forward to working with each member this year.
Everything, whether good or bad, we will together as a cohesive studentbody. Not as coworkers, but as a bunch of friends sharing our passion with one another. I want to be a friend to each of our students, in some way.
I hope we will have a comfortable and safe space where we can openly express our different opinions, visions, ideas to each other.
I am so excited to work with this team to plan more unique, fun, exciting events this year to make SPH PV an even more fun place to come to school. Students should get excited! Because we have some very fun activities planned that we think you’ll enjoy.
With the start of the school year, we are here to face each event and each moment as it comes, no matter what circumstances we will encounter this year.
Warm regards, Tatyara Faith Gomargana President of Student Council

A NOTE FROM CHAPLAIN
The Beauty of
FORGIVING
A number of years ago, I had a friend and colleague who I felt had sinned against me. For years, I harbored a lingering sense of bitterness towards her. Every time her name was brought up, I was filled with anxiety, sadness, and anger. Every time she would contact me directly, those feelings were magnified. I had said in my head that I had forgiven her, but with the continued bitterness, I realized that I had not forgiven her. My unforgiveness wasn’t hurting her, just myself.
From the start of God’s relationship with His people, forgiveness was expected. We are to no longer hold their sin against them. You shall not hate your brother in your heart, but you shall reason frankly with your neighbor, lest you incur sin because of him. You shall not take vengeance or bear a grudge against the sons of your own people, but you shall love your neighbor as yourself: I am the Lord. (Leviticus 19:17–18) This passage reminds us that: We respond to someone’s sin externally and internally. Both are important for us to think about! We sin if we respond inappropriately, and God is concerned with our present and future sins, not just theirs. A lack of forgiveness will destroy our community.
I recently came across this article that addresses forgiveness in times when it is especially difficult. You can find the full article here: https://www.desiringgod.org/articles/ifyour-brother-sins-against-you ,but I’m summarizing a few points here that I think are important for all of us.

A NOTE FROM CHAPLAIN
The author of the article gives these suggestions for how to let go and forgive: Speak with the other person privately instead of gossiping or posting about it. Don’t go to him to hurt or take vengeance or build your grudge even more. Do the heart work to get to a place of peace before going to him, but don’t put it off too long. Instead of hating them, reason plainly with clear explanations of what you believe has happened. The author of the article says “I wager that silent resentment has done even more harm among us than contention following plain speech.” Love your neighbor as yourself. We all hope to be forgiven, and in fact regularly forgive ourselves of the ways we mess up our own lives. Let us forgive others as well.
The sins of others don’t have to ruin our own souls. If after talking with our neighbors, they refuse to repent or apologize, we can still choose in our hearts not to hold bitterness. It ends up affecting us more than them. Since truly forgiving my friend (though she never actually apologized), I have found peace. Our friendship is not perfect or deep, but I no longer hold resentment towards her regarding what happened in the past. Sometimes, I have to remind myself that I have forgiven her, otherwise I may end up right back in the anxiety and sinful bitterness that I used to live in. On the other hand, if we realize (on our own or when confronted) that we have sinned against someone else, let us humbly apologize and ask for forgiveness and seek reconciliation. INFO MOTION
After-School Activity
STARTS IN TERM 2! Finally, the long wait is over!
Experts in child advancement suggest that participation in extracurricular activities on a regular basis is the best way to help children develop their individual personalities, cut down emotional stress, and enhance social or academic skills that could benefit them in the future (“The Benefits of Participation in After School Activities,” 2017, para. 2).
Come Term 2, SPH Pluit Village will launch an after-school activity. We would like to offer an opportunity for your children to hone their talents and interests in science, sport, and music. Through this program, we are supporting our students toward the set of values “The SPH way” Your children can choose to join soccer, basketball, table tennis, band, and coding which will be offered across levels.
Keep an eye on an email about this and sign up right away as each offering has a maximum number of participants. Want to know more about the benefits of after-school activities? Click this link for after-school activity (Oliver Caja, PE Coordinator)
