What's On

Vol #2 Jan 2022

in SPH Lippo Village Dear Parents and Friends, The stories throughout the Bible give testimony of God’s unfolding plan of redemption and restoration across the ages. The Bible teaches us about our good Shepherd and faithful heavenly Father. Over the years I have learned that in times of uncertainty and times of wondering, “What is God doing?”, I can trust and be confident that God’s plans will not be thwarted.

This past week I had the opportunity to be a guest in our third-grade class for their Unit of Inquiry. The focus of the UOI was considering how our family history impacts our present and future. I shared a little of my heritage and challenges faced and how now, many years later, I can look back and see God’s faithfulness even through some very difficult days. There were days where God’s plan and purposes were very unclear, times when we asked, ‘Why is God allowing this?’ Seeing how God was faithful in the life of my parents gave me strength and confidence when I faced uncertainty.

I enjoyed my time with our third graders, sharing a little about my family and experiences over the years. Thank you, third grade, for inviting me and giving me an opportunity to reflect on God’s blessings and faithfulness with you.

One small example I shared; In college, I had planned to be a pilot. However, an eye test changed that option for me and moved me towards education. My plan was to teach internationally but I began my teaching career at Wheaton Academy in the Chicago area. Almost 40 years later God allowed me to join SPH. Over the years as a teacher, principal, and Head of School He gave me wonderful friends, let me have an impact in the lives of many, and allowed me to be a witness to His faithfulness in times of difficulty and times of blessing.

Whether in grade 3 or another grade, as a parent, teacher, or staff, we can be confident that God is faithful. 2 Timothy 2:13 says, “if we are faithless, He remains faithful – for He cannot deny Himself.” His faithfulness is due to His nature and does not depend on me or you or our circumstances. Praise be to God! Because He is faithful, Gregg Thompson Head of School SPH Lippo Village

Isaiah 25:1 says, “O Lord, you are my God; I will exalt you; I will praise your name, for you have done wonderful things, plans formed of old, faithful and sure.”

BIG PICTURE

All Things Kindy

Tiny Ones Rolling in 100Days at School! This month marks the 100th day at school! K3 students celebrate this special day by coming to school dressed up with their best impressions of 100-years-old grandmas or grandpas. They played many fun games such as guessing their friends' old faces and learned to count until 100 with cereals. Some students even sneakily ate them! The 100-days at school celebration is a special moment for kids to count their days and express their thankfulness for all blessings God has given to them. It is a joy to see our young students grow day by day! 2 sph.edu

Gr. 7-10 | Middle Years Programme

Kicking the Year Off with Service as Action “Don’t forget to do good and to share what you have because God is pleased with this kind of sacrifices” Hebrews 13:16

From each of their homes, Grade 10 students had their online SA sessions where they have reached the finalizing stage of their projects.

Middle schoolers kicked off the year with a series of Service as Action (SA) activities. They started with what they have left off last year in Term 1 and 2, where the 7th graders got together in team-building activities to prepare for their next trip. We are hyped for the next trip and the kids themselves are eager for their second trip to the Beth Shalom Elderly Home!

SA is not just another program in the MYP. It helps students to make a positive difference in the lives of others and for the environment. But more importantly, it is about how we adapt biblical worldview into our learning and have our students see the importance of servant leadership qualities. We can't wait to see how our students continue to bless communities around them!

8th graders put on their lumber hats again and continued with their customized board game pieces for the students at SDH schools and Yayasan Pesat Nabire, Papua. Each board game piece is carefully designed, crafted, and put together in wood tech class. Bolu cupcakes and cookies for sale! These are the products coming straight out from food-tech class by the 9th graders where every sale goes to Sayap Ilmu. Good food for a good cause equals good spirit!

Verbal Commendation Award High School MUN 2022 Chavia Z. Tjung (Gr. 8) Harvard Model Congress Asia (HMCA) is a government simulation conference run entirely by Harvard students who are passionate about international relations, government, and teaching. HMCA has been dedicated to teaching, inspiring, and connecting students from across the world since 2004. On the other hand, High School MUN (HIMUN) is a Model United Nations simulation targeted at high school students across Indonesia. Chavia Tjung, who is currently in her eighth grade, shared her roller-coaster ride experience in the HIMUN 2022 as one of the youngest participants. "In this year's HIMUN, the debate was about how to build an inclusive society for the disabled. The competition was very competitive, and I was not really confident and was really stressed as each of the participants had substantive speeches! I took that as an opportunity to learn from the seniors and was able to improve on the second day when I led the committee discussion and improved my diplomacy. With that, I was grateful for receiving one of the awards after trying my best. There is always a chance to grow!" she said. To win these competitions, our students had to master diplomacy and public speaking skills, backed with vast knowledge about global issues and current happenings in the world. The major takeaways our students brought home were not only about winning and receiving trophies, but more importantly, it was about participating in a group of young people who have the same vision for a better world in the future. Once again, congratulations to all of them!

Finding the Leader within Me Junior School Student Council Leadership Training Lastly, the training ended with a ‘Bible Character Virtues’ activity where students discussed the godly virtues of a good leader from characters in the Bible.

"Whoever wants to be a leader among you must be your servant" Matthew 20:26 Young leaders, assemble! Our Junior School Student Council had their leadership training entitled “Finding the Leader within Me” after their appointment last year and will serve the JS community this year.

It is exciting to see our students from an incredibly early age learning to be servant leaders in our community!

The verse above was quoted by Ibu Yuni, JS Principal, at the training session. Ibu Yuni reminded students that a mindset of a leader follows the path of Jesus that is the opposite of the world to be a servant for others. The training committee had the presence of Ibu Stefani Emanuella who is a young aspiring human capital consultant where she led the team-building activities. Our young leaders learned the importance of collaboration, communication, and good strategy.

ALUMNI STORIES

Inspired to Inspire Nisya Tiffany Salim (Class of 2020) "One thing that stood out to me was my teacher who was very caring & understanding. I want to be that kind of teacher, I want to help kids and to be there with them." - Nisya Tiffany

In 2019, Nisya joined a Sayap Ilmu’s Mission Trip to a village in Flores, Nusa Tenggara Timur. That trip was quite an eye-opener to her and stirred her passion further. And that is where Nisya decided to pursue a career as a teacher.

Her passion for education sparked when she was an 8th grader during a spiritual retreat session. She also was an appointed leader in Sayap Ilmu, a student-led club that works to improve literacy and educational access of underprivileged children in the rural areas of Indonesia.
