What's On

Vol Vol #6 #3 May Feb 2022 2022

in SPH Lippo Village Dear Parents and Friends, Wednesday, 25 May, it was our joy to say ‘Farewell’ to the Class of 2022! The afternoon started with thunder and lightning; our plans for an outdoor ceremony didn’t look promising. God was gracious and when we started at 4:30 the rain was gone, and a cooling breeze followed as we said goodbye and celebrated as a school family. The back-up plan in Gym 1 wasn’t needed.

Matthew 6:25-34 tells of God’s loving care for us and for His creation. When we are anxious and try to control what is ultimately in God’s hands, our focus is diverted from the One who cares for us and turns inward. His promise is, “Seek first His Kingdom and His righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. Therefore, do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.” He will take care of us, not because we deserve or earn it, but because He loves us and cares for us.

Over the past two years we’ve implemented several ‘back-up’ plans as we navigated the global pandemic. Throughout this time, we witnessed God’s faithfulness and provision. His plans were not always what we prayed for, however, we trusted that His plans were for our good. The class of 2022 and our school community have learned a lot about flexibility, perseverance, and dealing with adversity. It will be interesting to see how these lessons will be used in the years to come.

While we could have celebrated our ‘farewell’ inside in gym 1, it was a blessing to enjoy the beautiful setting of the Clock Tower lawn. God’s care, love, and mercies are demonstrated in many ways as we pursue Him and put Him first in our lives. Because He is faithful, Gregg Thompson Head of School SPH Lippo Village

NEWS & HIGHLIGHTS

A New Beginning

Grade 12 Farewell Ceremony “Your grades or university do not define your worth but know that you are precious because you are a child of God.” - Mr. Matthew Mann, Executive Director of Sekolah Pelita Harapan

On the 25th of May 2022, our class of 2022 celebrated their farewell ceremony at the LV Clock Tower area. This was an incredible and precious moment for them and their families as it marked the culmination of their years at SPH.

This year, we celebrated 100 students who graduated from our school. We are very proud of them for being able to finish the IB DP program. The class of 2022 started their IB DP program in the midst of a pandemic, but they were able to survive and graduate.

Students, teachers, friends, and families gathered to celebrate the very last moment of this year’s grade 12 students as SPH students. They are now ready to go as they pursue their passion in their chosen universities. It is time for them to take another step to grow and flourish.

For that, we congratulate them on their hard work. We will miss you, class of 2022!

It's for you, Mom!

Celebrating Mother's Day with Pre-K May 8th marked this year's Mother's day in the United States. Since this is also a special day for many mothers globally, our Pre-K students took this opportunity to show their appreciation and came up with the fantastic idea of giving flowers to their beloved mothers!

As you can imagine, putting these together definitely kept the Pre-Ks busy! This activity was a multi-step project that enhanced various essential skills for the toddlers. They had to focus on one task over a prolonged period of time, which developed their attention span. Then, having them work through multiple steps also developed their thinking in sequence and order which is crucial to developing their logic. Additionally, painting, decorating, and coloring builds creativity and strengthen fine motor skills.

Since they couldn't grow their flowers at school, this idea provided the perfect chance to be creative and make a paper flower bouquet! The students had been working since before Lebaran break to make bouquets for their moms. They painted sticks with green paint for the stems, decorated paper flowers with glitter glue, and colored a special card to include with the bouquet!

Let's Get Moving! Active Living for Junior School Students

In a time where physical health needs to be emphasized more than ever, our LV Sports Department aims to help our students reach the recommended 60 minutes (based on WHO guidelines) of physical activity per day while having a great time, making new friends, and playing with old ones.

When asked what makes Active Living special, our Sports Program Coordinator, Mr. Erik Fry, stated: “The main thing that makes Active Living special is that it is allinclusive. It doesn’t matter what your favorite sport is, how fast you are, how skilled you are if you’re a boy or a girl, how tall (or short) you are, how much previous experience you have… because EVERYONE is included in the FUN and encouraged to be PHYSICALLY ACTIVE!”

This program is an enrichment opportunity for Junior School students to participate in fun, physical activity with their peers and coaches after school. Our team of coaches leads the students in a range of memorable activities meant to engage both their minds and bodies. Activities include things like modified soccer games, various tag games, capture the flag, dodgeball, team handball, floor hockey, bucket ball, relay races, jump rope, frisbee, and so much more.

Let’s support and encourage our students to be more physically active for the better!

A Virtual Concert A Token of Love for Papua Students Your actions can build a future for them. Did you know that there are still many villages in Papua that are underdeveloped without proper education and health care facilities? To show our love and support, we held our Love for Papua virtual concert this month which featured the whole SPH community–including students, teachers, staff, alumni, and parents. This concert gathered our community together to show our love for Papua and support of children's education in the interior of Papua, specifically in the Mokndoma area. Our SPH students and staff also brought music performances, such as "Lilin-lilin Kecil," "Love for Papua," and "Together for Papua," featuring SPH choir, SPH Harmonies, and SPH alumnus. In this virtual concert, we had testimonials from SPH students, teachers, parents, and YPHP donors who have visited Papua. They shared their personal stories about how visiting Papua and seeing the bright smiles of the students has changed their lives.

Our Young Scientists are Back! ASA Exhibition 2022 The long-awaited ASA (Applied Science Academy) exhibition is finally here! After getting hit by the pandemic, the ASA exhibition was postponed until further notice. However, this year, we can hold an exhibition on-site for students and parents to come to this year by God's grace! Over the last three years since the first exhibition in 2019, over 30 projects have been explored and researched. In this year's ASA, we are proud to see diverse and original research topics, such as the study of sea surface temperature and coastline evolution using remote sensing images around the Java islands. It is a privilege to have 22 of our current students with a combined total of 27 research projects in this exhibition. In addition to that, we are thankful to have new mentors with experience in renewable energy, remote sensing, and bioinformatics who help to enhance the diversity of the research projects in ASA. The Applied Science Academy is a research-based, after-school program dedicated to selected grade 10-12 students where multidisciplinary sciences are explored. Students are paired with research professors and mentors to develop scientific investigation or technology in their area of interest. Come and see our students' hard work and achievements in the Academy at this year's exhibition. We hope to see you there soon!
