NEEDS SUPERVISION: Keith West, 21, was taking apart a 10ga shotgun shell at a shed at his home in Clark, Colo., when the power tool he was using hit the shell's primer, setting it off. West, who had been holding the shell, went to a neighbour's for help; the neighbour apparently called 911. Deputies found the exploded shell, "but they were unable to recover any of West's fingers," the local newspaper noted. "Our heart goes out to this young man and his family," said Routt County Undersheriff Ray Birch. "This is an example of the things that can happen. If a child finds something like this, they need to notify an adult." (RC/Steamboat Today) ...But not that one. THEIR REASONING IS SUSPECT: "I think they were under the impression they could do that," Police Chief Michael McConnel said of the officers who told him they'd gone to a Horizon City, Tex., high

school and taken pictures of students they thought might have gang affiliations. According to parents, the cops made certain students line up and remove some of their clothing for the pictures -- all where other students could see. The photographs were of the victims' tattoos, and McConnel said the photos have been destroyed. Olga Rayos, whose son was required to remove his shirt, said he isn't a gang member: he just has a tribal tattoo on one shoulder, plus his own name on an arm. The school district says the police activity was against school policy -- because parental consent wasn't obtained. (AC/KFOX El Paso) ...So labeling teenagers as gang suspects is OK if their parents sign a form first?

NO TOLERANCE FOR ZERO: Lynden Dorval, 61, has been a physics teacher at Ross Sheppard High School in Edmonton, Alta., Canada, and has worked in the local public school system for 35 years. At the end of the school year in June, he faced a dilemma: a school policy that forbids teacher from giving a zero grade to students (the new requirement: "assigning behaviour codes for formative assessments") was in the way of his doing just that to students who had failed to turn in their work. "It's promoting students without having them do the work," he says, so he ignored the policy in favor of grading the kids on actual work. But, he said, "students were always allowed to make up their zero." He was suspended for 21 days. When he appealed the suspension, he was terminated. He now faces a new dilemma: he can retire, and protect his pension, or file a lawsuit, and risk losing everything. Other Canadian provinces have given up on their "no zero" policies because "it proved to be a complete disaster" for students, a teacher in Manitoba said. (RC/Canoe) ...It doesn't look too good for the few remaining teachers with integrity, either.

Can you afford to travel? I make no excuse in repeating myself. If you can’t afford decent travel insurance, you can’t afford to travel. There is no excuse to go on holiday without travel insurance. We always think “it will never happen to me” and the last thing you want to think about is what can go wrong? But it is not always straightforward when something happens even when taking a quick trip to UK. If you have an accident or are taken ill and you have an EHIC, you may receive free medical treatment. But what about the other costs such as additional accommodation costs for your travelling companion, cancellation of any ongoing trips or your return flight, and crucially, the cost for getting you home when you are fit enough to travel? The cost of Repatriation by Air or Road Ambulance will certainly make your eyes water!

What if your flight is delayed because of bad weather, industrial action or breakdown of your aircraft, train or ship? Or you miss your flight because of delay in public transport, or the vehicle taking you to the airport breaks down? Consider the additional costs involved if your passport is lost, stolen or damaged, if your airline goes bust. Your baggage gets put on the wrong flight, or it is lost or stolen. The staff in your hotel go on strike. How about the cost of Cancelling or cutting short your holiday because you or your travelling companion in unwell? Or if a close relative, business associate or someone you have planned to stay with becomes ill? Iran is this months visit Area: 1,648,195 km2 Population: 75,149 669 Capital: Tehran Official language: Persian Currency: Rial Iran , officially the Islamic Republic of Iran, is a country in Western Asia. The name "Iran", which in Persian means "Land of the Aryans", has been in native use since the Sassanian era. It came into use internationally in 1935, before which the country was known to the Western world as Persia Both "Persia" and "Iran" are used interchangeably in cultural contexts; however, "Iran" is the name used officially in political contexts. The 18th-largest country in the world , It is a country of particular geopolitical significance owing to its location in three spheres of Asia (West, Central, and South).

Iran is bordered on the north by Armenia, Azerbaijan and Turkmenistan. As Iran is a littoral state of the Caspian Sea, which is an inland sea, Kazakhstan and Russia are also Iran's direct neighbors to the north. Iran is bordered on the east by Afghanistan and Pakistan, on the south by the Persian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman, on the west by Iraq and on the northwest by Turkey. Iran is a regional power and holds an important position in international energy security and world economy as a result of its large reserves of petroleum and natural gas. Iran has the second largest proven natural gas reserves in the world and the fourth largest proven petroleum reserves. Iran is home to one of the world's oldest civilizations. The first dynasty in Iran formed during the Elamite kingdom in 2800BC. The Iranian Medes unified Iran into an empire in 625BC.They were succeeded by the Iranian Achaemenid Empire, the Hellenic Seleucid Empire and two subsequent Iranian empires, the Parthians and the Sassanids, before the Muslim conquest in 651AD. Iranian post -Islamic dynasties and empires expanded the

Persian language and culture throughout the Iranian plateau. Early Iranian dynasties which re-asserted Iranian independence included the Tahirids, Saffarids, Samanids and Buyids. The blossoming of Persian literature, philosophy, medicine, astronomy, mathematics and art became major elements of Muslim civilization. Iranian identity continued despite foreign rule in the ensuing centuries and Persian culture was adopted also by the Ghaznavid, Seljuk, Ilkhanid and Timurid rulers. The emergence in 1501 of the Safavid dynasty, which promoted Shia Islam as the official religion of their empire, marked one of the most important turning points in Iranian and Muslim history. The Persian Constitutional Revolution established the nation's first parliament in 1906, within a constitutional monarchy. In 1953 Iran became an authoritarian regime, following a coup d'ĂŠtat instigated by the UK and US. Growing dissent with foreign influence culminated during the Iranian Revolution which led to establishment of an Islamic republic on 1 April 1979.

Places of Interest Isfahan is Iran’s third largest city and the capital of the Isfahan Province. The city is home to a populace of over one million inhabitants. Isfahan is regarded as a city of lush gardens, historic bridges and Islamic art. It is also Iran’s most famous tourist centre.

Persepolis was built by the Archaemenid kings of ancient Persia - Darius the Great, Xerxes and Artaxerxes - in the mid-first millenium BC. It was conceived as a ceremonial site used just once a year for celebrating the Persian new year, which falls on 21st March (the spring equinox). At the peak of the strength of the Persian Empire, representatives of nations throughout the Middle East and Asia would be summoned to Persepolis for the New Year to pay 'tribute' (i.e. taxes) to the Emperor.

Pasargad was the first of the great Persian cities to be built by Cyrus the Great, the founder of the ancient empire of Persia who chose this location for the first great city of the Archaemenid dynasty.

Sir Jimmy Savile sex abuse claims: ITV goes where BBC fears to tread - By Stephen Adams Daily Telegraph The BBC is under pressure to explain why it shelved a Newsnight investigation into claims Sir Jimmy Savile sexually abused underage girls, as ITV prepares to air fresh allegations that he preyed on teenagers.

Esther Rantzen, the founder of ChildLine, said she now felt a degree of guilt for ignoring “gossip” that surrounded the Top of the Pops and Jim’ll Fix It presenter.

At least five women have spoken to ITV1, claiming they were molested - and in one case raped - by the late entertainer, one of the biggest BBC stars of the 1970s and 1980s. Some of the alleged incidents are said to have taken place at BBC Television Centre.

Rantzen, who began presenting That’s Life in 1973, told ITV1: “I feel that we in television in his world in some way colluded with him as a child abuser - because I now believe that’s what he was. “We all blocked our ears to the gossip. There was gossip, there were rumours.” She described it as “very distressing” to conclude that Savile abused teenage girls, and said those in television had helped turn him into “a sort of God-like figure”. ITV1 broadcast an hour-long documentary about the star, called Exposure: The Other Side of Jimmy Savile, Sue Thompson, who was a newsroom assistant at BBC Leeds, claims she walked in on Jimmy Saville one day in 1978, when a 14-year-old girl was sitting on his lap. “He had his left arm up her skirt and he was kissing her,” he said. However, she kept quiet because she did not think anyone would believe her. Some of the women who have spoken to ITV1 said they met him while living at a Home Office Approved School for girls, called Duncroft, in Surrey.

One claimed she was raped at the age of 14 by the star in his dressing room at BBC Television Centre in 1974, the first of “dozens” of incidents. She said: “As a mature woman now, I look back and I think I was actually raped on that first occasion.” Another said he had sex with her “on a number of occasions” when she was 15, while others have claimed he rewarded them with cigarettes and tickets to his shows if they performed sex acts on him in his car.

Late last year the BBC decided to drop a Newsnight item investigating allegations of sexual abuse by Savile, who died last October aged 84, leading to accusations the piece was 'killed' to spare the Corporation's reputation. Instead, two tribute programmes celebrating his BBC career were aired.

However, a BBC spokesman said no evidence of any allegations of misconduct had ever been found in its files, so it was “simply not possible for the Corporation to take any further action”.

Man dressed as Bigfoot killed trying to provoke sightings Montana West USA, ( confirmed true by Darwin2012 ) A man dressed as Bigfoot in an apparent attempt to provoke reports of a sighting of the mythical creature in northwestern Montana was struck by two cars and killed. The man was wearing a military-style "Ghillie suit" consisting of strips of camouflage fabric and was standing in the right-hand lane of a highway south of Kalispell on Sunday night when he was hit by the first car, according to the Montana Highway Patrol. A second car hit the man as he lay in the roadway, authorities said.

Flathead County officials identified the man as Randy Lee Tenley, 44, of Kalispell. Trooper Jim Schneider said his motives were ascertained during interviews with friends, and alcohol may have been a factor but investigators were awaiting tests.

"He was trying to make people think he was Sasquatch so people would call in a Sasquatch sighting," Schneider told the Daily Inter Lake newspaper. "You can't make it up. I haven't seen or heard of anything like this before. Obviously, his suit made it difficult for people to see him." Ghillie suits are a type of full-body clothing made to resemble heavy foliage and used to camouflage military snipers. "He probably would not have been very easy to see at all," Schneider told KECI-TV. Heads Up FORT LEE, N.J. (AP) (confirmed true by Darwin) 2012 — Police say a teenager headed to a Sweet 16 party in New Jersey was killed after he stuck his head out of an emergency hatch of a doubledecker bus and hit the underside of a highway overpass. Port Authority of New York and New Jersey police identified the teenager killed as 16-yearold as Daniel Fernandez, of Sayreville, N.J. Police say he was one of 65 teenagers aboard the bus headed to a party in New Jersey. The bus was crossing the George Washington Bridge from New York when the accident occurred at the Fletcher Avenue overpass of Interstate 95. Police say Fernandez was pronounced dead at a hospital. Designer Transportation, which operates the bus, expressed its "deepest heartfelt sympathy" for the boy's family.

KIANO, a name to remember! As a registered company, Engineering Kiano S.C. here on the Costa del Sol, are certainly making their mark in the Glass Balustrade field with their unique concepts for Semi – Frame less and Frame less systems. The system was originally designed for Swimming Pool Safety Surrounds in compliance to current E.U. regulations and the European Child Safety Alliance advisory body. But the systems are suitable for a wide range of other applications including balconies, bars, restaurants, shops, offices etc. Manufacturing the systems themselves, with a dedicated workforce and their own machine shop allows them the opportunity to modify parts to suit special non- standard applications and stay in control of Quality and production output. From a commercial prospective the parts could be made for them in the Far East and several offers have already been made for this, however the Director at Kiano, an ex pat from the U.K. will not take this route and prefers to manufacture in house and create employment in this area which has been his family home for the past 9 years. Currently, enquiries for export are in hand from Australia, United Kingdom, Cyprus and the Far East with agents in Portugal imminent. Due to this progress stage 1 of Kiano’s expansion with the introduction of more machinery has been completed and stage 2 is in the planning stage, more machinery and staff. Although Kiano’s main focus is on their Balustrade Systems they are still precision and general engineers and continue to meet the demands of various clients for everyday needs. Testimonials “Having some background in engineering myself I knew that when I visited Kiano that this was a proper engineering company with skills to match and have since used them on

several occasions myself, they have gained an exceptional reputation in the Port of Fuengirola”, They have also modified our winch rollers with a bespoke design. Kevin Nelmes, Central Ticket Office & Pirate Parasailing, Fuengirola Port. “We were stuck in the port of Fuengirola with a broken windlass on our boat and spent days trying to find a new part to repair the equipment but couldn’t get one, so we called in to see Kevin and although it was Saturday he suggested calling Kiano, but we all thought that the part couldn’t be made , four hours later with a new part and repaired windlass we set sail to our next port of call Tunisia, incredible engineering talent and expertise they have at Kiano we are eternally grateful.” Mark and Sarah UK/South Africa/Ocean Sea seafarers . Crickets, Family Gryllidae (also known as "true crickets"), are insects somewhat related to grasshoppers, and more closely related to katydids or bush crickets (family Tettigoniidae). They have somewhat flattened bodies and long antennae. There are about 900 species of crickets. They tend to be nocturnal and are often confused with grasshoppers because they have a similar body structure including jumping hind legs. Crickets are harmless to humans. Chirping The sound emitted by crickets is commonly referred to as chirping; the scientific name is stridulation. Only the male crickets chirp. The sound is emitted by the stridulatory organ, a large vein running along the bottom of each wing, covered with "teeth" (serration) much like a comb. The chirping sound is created by running the top of one wing along the teeth at the bottom of the other wing. As he does this, the cricket also holds the wings up and open, so that the wing membranes can act as acoustical sails. It is a popular myth that the cricket chirps by rubbing its legs together. There are four types of cricket song: The calling song attracts females and repels other males, and is fairly loud. The courting song is used when a female cricket is near, and is a very quiet song. An aggressive song is triggered by chemoreceptors on the antennae that detect the near presence of another male cricket and a copulatory song is produced for a brief period after a successful mating. Crickets chirp at different rates depending on their species and the temperature of their environment. Most species chirp at higher rates the higher the temperature is.The relationship between temperature and the rate of chirping is known as Dolbear's Law. According to this law, counting the number of chirps produced in 14 seconds by the snowy tree cricket common in the United States and adding 40 will approximately equal the temperature in degrees Fahrenheit.Crickets, like all other insects, are cold-blooded. They take on the temperature of their surroundings. Many characteristics of cold-blooded animals, like the rate at which crickets chirp, or the speed at whichants walk, follow an equation called the Arrhenius equation.

This equation describes the activation energy or threshold energy required to induce a chemical reaction. For instance, crickets, like all other organisms, have many chemical reactions occurring within their bodies. As the temperature rises, it becomes easier to reach a certain activation or threshold energy, and chemical reactions, like those that occur during the muscle contractions used to produce chirping, happen more rapidly. As the temperature falls, the rate of chemical reactions inside the crickets' bodies slow down, causing characteristics, such as chirping, to also slow down. Crickets have tympanic membranes located just below the middle joint of each front leg (or knee). This enables them to hear another cricket's song. Diet and life cycle Crickets are omnivorous scavengers who feed on organic materials, including decaying plant material, fungi, and some seedling plants. Crickets eat their own dead when there are no other sources of food available, and exhibit predatorial behavior upon weakened, crippled crickets. Crickets have relatively powerful jaws, and several species have been known to bite humans. Crickets mate in late summer and lay their eggs in autumn. The eggs hatch in the spring and have been estimated to number as high as 200 per fertile female. Species Acheta domestica however lays eggs almost continually, with the females capable of laying at least twice a month. Female crickets have a long needlelike egg-laying organ called an ovipositor. Crickets are popular as a live food source for carnivorous pets like frogs, lizards, tortoises, salamanders, and spiders. Feeding crickets with nutritious food in order to pass the nutrition onto animals that eat them is known as gut loading. In addition to this, the crickets are often dusted with a mineral supplement powder to ensure complete nutrition to the pet. Crickets are popular pets and are considered good luck in some countries; in China, crickets are sometimes kept in cages, It is also common to have them as caged pets in some European countries, particularly in the Iberian Peninsula. Cricket fighting as a gambling or sports betting pastime also occurs, particularly in China, Mexico and Southeast Asia. Consumption Various species of crickets are a part of people's diets in some countries, and are considered delicacies of high cuisine in places like Mexico. In Cambodia and southern part of Vietnam, cricket is well known as a delicious food. It is prepared by deep frying the soaked and cleaned insect in oil.

Stereo grams Turn the page sideways clockwise and look at the image, you should see a 3D Picture? Can’t see it? here’s some tips that might help

The Pullback Get very close to the stereogram, very very slowly pull it away from you. At first you won’t even be able to focus on the image... However keep moving the image in and out relaxing and it will appear. Look at the reflection You’ll need to look at something about twice the distance of the image. It turns out we have exactly what you need , Your reflection.. By looking at your reflection in the page. To help put the image behind glass enough for you to see your reflection. After looking at your reflection, simply stop focussing on your reflection and try to see the image. Repeat switching your focus from your reflection to the image,,, suddenly you will see it

entwined that hilarious consequences follow. Directed by Lee Lingwood tickets are available from the usual outlets. Welcome to the October Newsletter ‘A Gown for his Mistress’ The month started well with the TAPAS choir performing at a benefit concert in aid of the victims of the terrible fire that engulfed so much of our surrounding area. It really was a fantastic experience for all those taking part. “A Gown for his Mistress” will be performed at Los Arcos on the 19th, 20th October at 8.00pm and 21st October at 4pm, Set in Paris of the early 1900s, the plot revolves around Doctor Moulineaux as he returns from an unsuccessful liaison with the married Suzanne, the lady he wishes “to get to know better”. Meanwhile his wife finds his bed empty so calls for her belligerent mother, Madame Aigreville. Moulineaux believes his best course of action is to lie, and as more characters appear the lies become so

Almost before the applause for the play has died down rehearsals start for “A Christmas Carol”. This is a joint production for Christmas by the choir and drama groups and is a fine way to celebrate the 200th anniversary of the birth of Charles Dickens. Improvements continue at Los Arcos with adjustments being made to the stage to enlarge it. Also problems with the downstairs toilets have been addressed and they are now fully functional. At the Pirates Evening there were many timbers being shivered. A great night was enjoyed by all. Thanks to Andy and Jane for hosting. As well as the Christmas production, the choir can look forward to a number of Christmas performances as well as a Harvest Festival in October. Life at TAPAS is never dull!

"Morning Sex" She was standing in the kitchen, preparing our usual soft-boiled eggs and toast for breakfast, wearing only The 'T' shirt that she normally slept in. As I walked in, almost awake, she turned to me and said softly, "You've got to make love to me this very moment!" My eyes lit up and I thought, "I am either still dreaming or this is going to be my lucky day!" Not wanting to lose the moment, I embraced her and then gave it my all; right there on the kitchen table. Afterwards she said, "Thanks," and returned to the stove, her T-shirt still around her neck. Happy, but a little puzzled, I asked, "What was that all about?" She explained, "The egg timer's broken."

The Cocktail bar - Helga's cruise ship diary DEAR DIARY - DAY 1 All packed for the cruise ship -- all my nicest dresses, swimsuits, short sets. Really, really exciting. Our local Red Hat chapter - The Late Bloomers decided on this "all-girls" trip. It will be my first one, - and I can't wait! DEAR DIARY - DAY 2 Entire day at sea, beautiful. Saw whales and dolphins. Met the Captain today -- seems like a very nice, handsome man.. DEAR DIARY - DAY 3 At the pool today. Did some shuffleboard, hit golf balls off the deck. Captain invited me to join him at his table for dinner. Felt honoured and had a wonderful time. He is very attractive and attentive. DEAR DIARY - DAY 4 Won $800.00 in the ship's casino. Captain

asked me to have dinner with him in his own cabin. Had a scrumptious meal complete with caviar and champagne. He asked me to stay the night, but I declined. Told him I could not be unfaithful to my husband. DEAR DIARY - DAY 5 Pool again today. Got sunburned, and I went inside to drink at piano-bar, stayed there for rest of day. Captain saw me, bought me several large drinks. Really is quite charming. Again asked me to visit his cabin for the night. Again I declined. He told me, if I did not let him have his way with me, he would sink the ship... I was shocked. DEAR DIARY - DAY 6 Today I saved 2600 lives........Twice

New Zealand's a land of..... A man walked into the produce section of his local Tesco supermarket in London and asked to buy half a head of lettuce. The boy working in thatdepartment told him that they only sold whole heads of lettuce. The man was insistent that the boy ask the manager about the matter.

Walking into the back room, the boy said to the manager, "Some old bastard wants to buy a half a head of lettuce." As he finished his sentence, he turned around to find that the man was standing right behind him, so he quickly added, "and this gentleman kindly offered to buy the other half."

The manager approved the deal and the man went on his way. Later, the manager said to the boy," I was impressed with the way you got out of that situation earlier. I like people who think on their feet. Where are you from son?" "New Zealand, sir," the boy replied.

"Why did you leave?" asked the manager. "Well sir," said the boy,"New Zealand's a land of prostitutes and rugby players, and that's about it."

"Is that right?" said the manager," My wife is from New Zealand !"

"Really?" replied the boy, "Who'd she play for?

Hi Chaps – well summer is only just over and the beautiful cool of Autumn has now arrived and with it all of those endless end of summer parties at all of the top locations on the coast.

This is the time when the Music Biz starts to plant little seeds in our brains about the albums that will be filling our stockings at Christmas. One of the obvious choices for that honour will probably be new dad Robbie Williams who looks so proud of his daughter Teddy (Theodora Rose). The Robster has a new single “Candy” released from his forthcoming album “Take the Crown”. The track has been produced by Take That partner Gary Barlow and on first listen I reckon it’s a real winner

Another stalwart of music, the man that everybody knows but nobody remembers Paul Carrick, the voice heard on some many classic tracks from Ace, Roxy Music, Squeeze and Mike and the Mechanics has a lovely rather cheesy cover of “When My Little Girl Is Smiling” as a recent release. The track is a taster of his new 3 CD set "Collected”. BASCA, in association with PRS for Music have awarded Paul “The Gold Badge of Merit” for his contribution to the British music industry, not bad for someone who nobody ever remembers.

Sir Tom Jones seems to be amongst the most prolific artists when it comes to new material and the rumour is there will be a “Jones The Voice” album out for Christmas

McFly have their greatest hits collection being released towards the end of October. Other acts with albums on the way include Boy George - Hang Ups George Michael - Symphonica Live Susan Boyle - Standing Ovation Rod Stewart - Merry Christmas Baby The Rolling Stones - GRRR! Olly Murs - Right Place Right Time

Then there's Bob Dylan Featuring ten new and original Dylan songs, the release of “Tempest” coincides with the 50th anniversary of the artist’s Classic debut album

strangely titled "Bob Dylan", which was released by Columbia in 1962. The album was produced by Dylan himself although, as with other recent studio albums, the producer is credited as ‘Jack Frost’. This album from the evergreen US icon includes his John Lennon tribute "Roll On John", incorporating references to The Beatles' "Come Together" and "A Day In The Life."

Ahh - all the greats are there releasing new music amongst them we have Van Morrison and “Born To Sing,No Plan B” and Mark Knoffler with “Privateering”

So there you go a little bit of advance warning and a chance for you to start getting the Christmas shopping list early all compliments of Heartfm 96.1 and www.heartfmspain.com and of course via I tunes Catch you next month.....
