Hospital removes eel from man's bum A man sought emergency treatment at a hospital in Auckland this week with an eel stuck up his bottom. The unnamed individual presented himself at the A&E department at Auckland City Hospital to explain his embarrassing problem. It is believed the patient was sent for X-rays and a scan, which showed there was an eel lodged inside him. "The eel was about the size of a decent sprig of asparagus and the incident is the talk of the place," a hospital source said. "Doctors and nurses have come across people with strange objects that have got stuck where they shouldn't be before, but an eel has to be a first." It is unclear how the eel managed to be trapped inside the man. It is believed medics successfully removed it and the man was later discharged.
A hospital spokesman last night confirmed the bizarre incident had taken place. "In response to a direct query from the Herald on Sunday, we can confirm that an adult male presented at Auckland City Hospital this week with an eel inside him," Matt Rogers, spokesman for Auckland District Health Board, said. He added: "No further comment will be made out of respect for the patient's right to privacy." According to the Department of Conservation website, there are two main types of eel found in New Zealand - the shortfin and the longfin. Eels migrate up streams as elvers to find suitable adult habitat. After many years they migrate to the Pacific Ocean to breed and die. Eels are secretive, nocturnal and prefer habitats with plenty of cover. They hunt by smell rather than sight. Bugs to die for? Edward Archbold, 32, visited a Deerfield Beach, Fla., reptile store to help a friend win a $700 Ivory Ball python. All he had to do was eat more bugs than anyone else in 4 minutes -- without vomiting. Archbold downed over 20 discoid roaches and horn worms, beating out the next contender by one bug and winning the snake. Before he could collect the python, though, he started vomiting and then collapsed outside the store. He was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Store owner Ben Siegel said he believes Archbold had an allergic reaction, and insisted the bugs are safe to eat. Discoid roaches, Siegel said, are "eaten by people all over the world." The roaches were domestically raised. "They're clean -- raised for exotic pet feed," he said. "It's nothing but pure, clean protein." The python Archbold won will be given to his estate. Christmas may not be on your mind at the moment, but it’s the perfect time to begin with the making of a Christmas Cake. If you’ve never made one before, it’s easy, just one of those cakes where everything is thrown into a bowl and mixed together – the only thing you need is time to feed it, and these cakes certainly get thirsty around this time of year! The aroma of this cake baking is truly wonderful Time to get the sherry bottle out ! Ingredients 125g glace cherries, chopped 100g dried apricots, chopped 200g currants 200g sultanas 200g raisins 75g dried pineapple 100g dried cherries 150ml sherry, brandy, rum or brewed tea zest and juice of 1 orange and 1 lemon 250g butter, softened, plus extra for greasing 250g dark brown sugar 2tsp vanilla extract 4 large eggs 200g plain flour 2tsp mixed spice 50g flaked almonds 50g chopped brazilnuts Method • Place the dried fruit, alcohol or tea, zest and juice into a large bowl. • Leave overnight to absorb all the liquids ,stir occasionally. • Heat oven to 160°C/325°F. Butter and double-line a deep cake tin(20cm round, or 18cm square) with enough baking parchment to extend about 3cm over the top of the tin. • Mix well, cover and leave overnight • Wrap the outside of the tin with a few sheets of brown paper, secure with string, to protect the cake from burning whilst baking • In a clean bowl, beat the butter, brown sugar and vanilla extract until creamy then beat in the eggs, one at a time. • Stir in the sieved flour and mixed spice, soaked fruit and liquid and nuts. Mix together well. • Transfer to the cake tin and use a spoon to make a slight dent in the centre of the surface.
• Bake for 90 minutes at 160 degC/325F,and then reduce oven temperature to 140°/275°F. • Loosely cover the top of the tin with foil or baking parchment and bake for another45-60 minutes until a skewer poked into the middle comes out clean. Cool in the tin then remove and wrap in baking parchment. • Store in an airtight container in a cooldark place for up to 6 months. Every couple of weeks, feed your cake with a syringe, or by piercing with a skewer and drizzling over a little more alcohol or tea. • Decorate up to a week before eating • For really simple decoration, warm a little sieved apricot jam and brush it over the cake before topping with rolled-out Ready to Roll Marzipan. Roll out some Ready to Roll White Icing ,and then roll with a Pattern Pin before transferring

It is situated in the Caribbean Sea. Jamaica is the 5th largest island country in the Caribbean. The indigenous Arawakan-speaking TaĂno name for the island was Xaymaca, meaning the "Land of Wood and Water" or the "Land of Springs". Once Spanish known as Santiago, it became an English, and later British, colony in 1655 under the name Jamaica. It achieved full independence from the United Kingdom on August 6, 1962. Prehistory The Arawak and Taino indigenous people, originating in South America, settled on the island between 4000 and 1000 BC. Christopher Columbus claimed Jamaica for Spain after landing there in 1494 and his probable landing point was Dry Harbour, now called Discovery Bay.
When he arrived, there were over 200 villages ruled by caciques (chiefs of villages). The south coast of Jamaica was the most populated, especially around the area now known as Old Harbour. One mile west of St. Ann's Bay is the site of the first Spanish settlement on the island, Sevilla, which was established in 1509 and abandoned around 1524 because it was deemed unhealthy. The capital was moved to Spanish Town, then called "St. Jago de la Vega", around 1534 and is located in present day St. Catherine. British rule Out of all the British colonies in the Caribbean, Spanish Town has the oldest cathedral. The Spanish were forcibly evicted by the English at Ocho Rios in St. Ann. In 1655 the English, led by Sir William Penn and General Robert Venables, took over the last Spanish fort in Jamaica. The name of Montego Bay, the capital of the parish of St. James, was derived from the Spanish name manteca bahĂa (or Bay of Lard) for the large quantity of boar used for the lard-making industry. France outlawed Jews in their country in 1394. By 1660, Jamaica had become a refuge for Jews. A settlement arrived in 1510, Primarily merchants and traders, the Jewish community was forced to live a clandestine life, calling themselves "Portugals". After the British took over rule of Jamaica, the Jews felt that the best defence
against Spanish threat would be to make the colony a base for Caribbean pirates.With the pirates installed in its main port, Port Royal, the Spanish would be deterred form carrying out an attack. The British leaders were convinced of the viability of this strategy to forestall Henry Morgan, Privateer outside aggression. When the English captured Jamaica in 1655 the Spanish colonists fled after freeing their slaves. The slaves fled into the mountains, joining those who had previously escaped from the Spanish to live with the TaĂnos. These runaway slaves, known as the Jamaican Maroons, fought the British during the 18th century. The name is still used today for their modern descendants. During the long years of slavery Maroons established free communities in the mountains maintaining their freedom and independence for generations. During its first 200 years of British rule, Jamaica became one of the world's leading sugarexporting, slave-dependent nations, producing more than 77,000 tons annually . After the abolition of the slave trade in 1807, the British imported Indian & Chinese workers as indentured servants to supplement the labour pool. Descendants of these servants reside in Jamaica today.
By the beginning of the 19th century, Jamaica's heavy reliance on slavery resulted in blacks outnumbering whites by a ratio of almost 20:1. Even though England had outlawed the importation of slaves, some were still smuggled in. The British government drew up laws regimenting the abolition of slavery, including instructions for the improvement of the slaves' way of life. Including a ban of the use of whips in the field, the flogging of women, that slaves were to be allowed religious instruction, that slaves be given an extra free day during the week when they could sell their produce as well as a ban on Sunday markets. In Jamaica these measures were resisted by the House of Assembly. They claimed that the slaves were content, although many slave owners feared revolts. Following a series of rebellions and changing attitudes in Great Britain, the nation formally abolished slavery in 1834. Ethnic origins According to the 2001 census, the majority of Jamaica's population is of African descent. The most common ethnic groups among all Africans taken to Jamaica were the Akan from present-day Ghana and the Igbo from present-day Nigeria. Multiracial Jamaicans form the 2nd largest racial group many of whom also have some Irish ancestry although most mixed-race people on the island self-report simply as "Jamaican".

Alexis Araujo Spanish Karting Champion The International Circuit of Motorland (Aragon) was the scene for the Spanish Karting Championship the 7th of October. The prestigious Rotax Championship was to crown this years Spanish Champions and Spains representatives to the World Final 2012. Alexis Araujo, the local pilot from Fuengirola having been preparing 3 months for the event had a mixed weekend, but ending with the result he needed. In initial free practice he had been comfortably quickest, but come race weekend the gremlins set in causing problems with the race engines. In timed practice, Alexis grabbed pole position, by only 2 thousands of a second, to start on the front row for the pre-final. The first of the races, the pre-final, he came over the finishing line first by only 4 tenths of a second. The Final proved harder. Slipping back to 4th place at the start he recovered quickly to take back 1st position and holding it for the 15 laps to take the chequered flag as the winner, with just 2 tenths of a second over his pursuer. The win regaining him the title he wom in 2012 in the junior class and also a place to the World Finals in Portugal in December. The 16 year old double Spanish Champion is still looking for sponsors to help for the coming year, to race in Europe.

Members of the club were joined by friends from all of the other bowling clubs on the Costa del Sol to help celebrate 25 years of bowling on the Costa. Mijas played host to four members from all the nine clubs in the area including their Captains. On arrival everyone received a Mijas Bowls Jubilee Pen. The celebrations then commenced with all of the guests and members being greeted by Mijas Captain Barbara Land with coffee, bucks fizz and cava followed by three sessions of fun bowling games throughout the day. Lunch was provided by ladies from Mijas Bowls club and there were games and refreshments between the bowls sessions. The day ended with tea and a piece of Jubilee cake. Winners were Pam Cole, Tim Knight, Wendy Nagle and Reg Goode.
Coin RBLgoes exploring in la Serrana de Ronda On Saturday the 20th of October an intrepid group of explorers from the Coin Branch of the Royal British Legion took a coach trip to the historic town of Jimena de la Frontera in Cadiz province. It was a beautiful day and feeling especially intrepid the fearless leader, Jim Cross, decided to treat the group to a picturesque tour of the Paraje Natural Los Reales de Sierra Permeja just north of Estepona. The highlight of this detour was a walk through the beautiful village of Genalguacil. The tour started in Lamilla Street where there are outstanding views of the Genal valley. It was obvious from the beginning that this place is an outdoor museum with many works of art of astonishing quality exhibited in various spots across the village. One of the highlights of the artwork is an exhibition of faces carved into the trunk of a tree at the entrance to the village. After the walk through Genalguacil the group boarded the bus for an amazing drive through the Serrania de Ronda to the famous town of Jimena de la Frontera. This gem of a village has a fairly checkered historical past, having been inhabited at various times by the Iberians, Phoenicians and Carthaginians as well as by the Romans, who made good use of the rich metal deposits found there. With a present population of just over 9,000 inhabitants (some 1,000 of whom are foreign residents - many British), its narrow cobbled streets and white washed Andalusian houses, it certainly retains its village ambience and was a delight to visit.
Spanish Powers of Attorney Jon Sutton, Lawyer at De Cotta Law What is a Power of Attorney? It is a legal document that appoints someone to undertake actions and execute documents on your behalf. Can I grant a Power of Attorney to my spouse or partner for Spanish assets? Granting a power of attorney can be a practical solution where a spouse or civil partner works abroad and only one of the couple can attend in person when buying or selling property. Equally you may not be available in Spain to undertake all the legal work and to sign documents when dealing with property or assets in Spain.
In Spain a Power of Attorney must be signed before a notary public. The document can be executed in Spain or in England. The Spanish formalities for a power of attorney are dealt with under the notarial rules and their use is strictly governed by the Spanish Civil Code. The Spanish Civil Code has strict rules on the use of powers of attorney. These include the obligation to only use the power on the instructions of the donee; the obligation to ensure proper record keeping and the duty to the donee to act in the best interests of the person granting the power. Can a Power of attorney be misused It is important to know that a Spanish form power of attorney cannot be used if the granter loses mental capacity to make decisions about its use. Also it cannot be used after the death of the granter. The power can be specific to a particular act or more general with wide faculties to act. You may have heard stories of the misuse of powers of attorney by agents or others so you should ensure that you are advised of any acts being undertaken on your behalf. It is always best to provide written instructions and to ask to be informed in writing of anything being done on your behalf so that no misunderstandings can arise. For litigation purposes a very comprehensive power of attorney has to be granted to Spanish to Spanish lawyers – abogados – and court agents – procuradores – to present pleadings and pursue proceedings in the
Spanish courts. There are regional colleges of lawyers and procurators who regulate the profession. The colleges are responsible for deontologia – professional conduct rules which include rules on conflicts, ethics, obtaining instructions and pursuing matters with due diligence including reporting to the client.

Kodiak Alaska 2012 ( pending acceptace by Darwin ) Texting woman falls off cliff A woman is busily texting and tries to discard a cigarette butt in Kodiak, Alaska. There is a nearby cliff. The story does not end well. Technology has, sadly, forced us into new forms of behavior. Many of these involve the simultaneous performance of two very different acts. This is sometimes known as multi-tasking. This is sometimes over-taxing. Indeed, Maria Pestrikoff of Kodiak, Alaska, discovered the difficulties of attempting two unrelated acts and rather failed in the attempt. According to the Associated Press, her twin maneuver consisted of trying to toss a cigarette butt while texting. I suggest you don't try this at home -- or, for that matter, anywhere. However, Pestrikoff was trying it in her own home. In her garden, in fact. Her garden abuts a cliff that features a 60-foot drop. In attempting to multitask, Pestrikoff
seems to have lost her balance and her bearings, slipped on wet grass and plummeted over the cliff. She ended up mere feet from the tide and suffered multiple injuries. She is now recovering and was fortunate that a friend heard her screams. Pestrikoff is not the first -- nor will she be the last -- to text her way into trouble. Stop That Norwalk Ohio (Confirmed True by Darwin 2012) Authorities say a young driver from Norwalk, Ohio, who died in a traffic accident may have been stealing stop signs shortly before his death. The Norwalk Reflector reports that 19-year-old Tyller Myers was killed after he ran a stop sign in his Ford F-150 pickup truck and was struck by a tractor-trailer, according to police. And when police began investigating the accident, they found three stop signs inside Myers' truck, which Sgt. Jason Demuth said had been stolen from intersections along the route Myers had been traveling before his accident. While Myers was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident, the driver of the tractortrailer, Kevin Heter, was flown to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Investigating Trooper Tim Hoffman said Myers was not wearing his seat belt at the time of the accident.
Description Cockroaches are generally rather large insects. Most species are about the size of a thumbnail, but several species are bigger. The world's heaviest cockroach is the Australian giant burrowing cockroach, which can reach 9cm (3.5in) in length and weigh more than 30g (1.1oz). Comparable in size is the Central American giant cockroach Blaberus giganteus, which grows to a similar length but is not as heavy. Cockroaches have broad, flattened bodies and a relatively small heads. They are generalized insects, with few special adaptations, and may be among the most primitive living neopteran insects. The mouth parts are on the underside of the head and include generalised chewing mandibles. They have large compound eyes, two ocelli, and long, flexible, antennae. The first pair of wings (the tegmina) are tough and protective, lying as a shield on top of the membranous hind wings. All four wings have branching longitudinal veins, and multiple cross-veins. The legs are sturdy, with large coxae and five claws each. The abdomen has ten segments and several cerci. Eggs and egg capsules Female cockroaches are sometimes seen carrying egg cases on the end of their abdomens. The egg capsule may take more than five hours to lay and is initially bright white in colour. The eggs are hatched from the combined pressure of the hatchlings gulping air. The hatchlings are initially bright white nymphs and continue inflating themselves with air, becoming harder and darker within about four hours. Development from eggs to adults takes three to four months. Cockroaches live up to a year. The female may produce up to eight egg cases in a lifetime; in favourable conditions, she can produce 300 to 400 offspring. Other species of cockroaches, however, can produce an extremely high number of eggs in a lifetime; in some cases a female needs to be impregnated only once to be able to lay eggs for the rest of her life. Cockroaches live in a wide range of environments around the world. Pest species adapt readily to a variety of environments, but prefer warm conditions found within buildings. Many tropical species prefer even warmer environments and do not fare well in the average household.The spines on the legs were earlier considered to be sensory,
but observations of their locomotion on sand and wire meshes have demonstrated they help in locomotion on difficult terrain. Cockroaches leave chemical trails in their faeces, as well as emitting airborne pheromones for swarming and mating. These chemical trails transmit bacteria onto surfaces. Other cockroaches will follow these trails to discover sources of food and water, and also discover where other cockroaches are hiding. Research has shown group-based decision making. In a study where 50 cockroaches were placed in a dish with three shelters with a capacity for 40 insects in each, the insects arranged themselves in two shelters with 25 insects in each, leaving the third shelter empty. Cockroaches are mainly nocturnal and will run away when exposed to light. Hardiness Cockroaches are among the hardiest insects. Some species are capable of remaining active for a month without food and are able to survive on limited resources, such as the glue from the back of postage stamps. Some can go without air for 45 minutes. In one experiment, cockroaches were able to recover from being submerged underwater for half an hour. It is popularly suggested that cockroaches will "inherit the earth" if humanity destroys itself in a nuclear war. Cockroaches do indeed have a much higher radiation resistance than vertebrates, with the lethal dose perhaps six to 15 times that for humans. However, they are not exceptionally radiation-resistant compared to other insects, such as the fruit fly. The cockroach's ability to withstand radiation better than human beings can be explained through the cell cycle. Cells are most vulnerable to the effects of radiation when they are dividing. A cockroach's cells divide only once each time it molts, which is weekly at most in a juvenile roach. Since not all cockroaches would be moulting at the same time, many would be unaffected by an acute burst of radiation, but lingering radioactive fallout would still be harmful Role as pests Cockroaches are one of the most commonly noted household pest insects. They feed on human and pet food, and can leave an offensive odour. They can also passively transport microbes on their body surfaces including those that are potentially dangerous to humans, particularly in environments such as hospitals. Cockroaches have been shown to be linked with allergic reactions in humans. One of the proteins that triggers allergic reactions has been identified as tropomyosin. These allergens have also been found to be linked with asthma
