WHY PRINT? An editorial by Nitch Media
P
rint is one of the oldest business models still in existence. The printing press, invented by the second-most famous Gutenberg in history, Johannes, was invented in the 1400s. Ever since that day, the world has gotten information from the printed word. We don’t see anything wrong with that enduring business model. What we do see wrong is the content (and advertising) overload bombarding web users. There are far too many sites, both local and nationally, for any one site to be a sound advertising investment. There’s not much a website can do for a local, brick-and-mortar establishment. Even a click or traffic driven to a business’ website doesn’t guarantee a conversion to sales. We don’t want to jump onto any tech trends or get involved in any fads. We want to get our product to our readers as directly as possible, distributing where they work, shop, eat and play. We are responsible with excess issues of the magazine, and we ask that you do the same. We urge you to cherish each issue of The South Florida PALM forever, pass it on to a friend, or enjoy and RECYCLE it. Thank you, and once again, Nitch Media is Proud to Present:

NETWORKING EVENT ADVICE Bring lots of business cards.
It sounds like a no-brainer, but nevertheless, you’ll meet people at networking events who, after introductions and a long conversation, will tell you, “Sorry, I didn’t bring any cards” or its slightly less unforgivable cousin, “Sorry, I ran out of cards.” Neither of these should ever happen. A stack of 50 business cards is, not surprisingly, about the width of a deck of playing cards. A couple decks of playing cards’ worth, and there’s no way you’ll run out in a night. That should easily fit in your purse or pockets. As for the other, forgetting them entirely, having business cards at a networking event is like having a bowl of candy ready to go on Halloween – if you don’t have it, you’re not really participating.
2. 3.
Talk to strangers.
Sure, it’s the opposite of what momma told you, but this is a networking event. Hovering around one table with a bunch of people you already know is not the point. Neither is sitting at the bar and pounding cocktails. (Though if it helps you talk to strangers, by all means, have a few.) People actually expect you to do this. That is why this is a networking event. Seriously, just go try it. Walk up to a random person – preferably someone who looks like they’re getting a lot of ass kissing and is therefore of some importance – and shake his or her hand. Otherwise, you might as well just stay at home.
Know when to say when.
Yes, about that bit in no. 2 that advised you to have a few cocktails? The opportune word is “few.” It’s a truism of any party that you should never, ever be the drunkest person there. At a networking event, you should not be in the drunkest 50 percent. If you’re the type who goes out on the weekends and gets bombed in seedy bars (Hey, we all have our hobbies.), you need to learn a little self control here. One an hour. Pace yourself. Have some soda water with lime in between, if you feel you must have what appears to be a cocktail in your hands. Remember that you are a brand ambassador representing the brand that is you. Stumbling around and talking to the walls will not make for a successful marketing strategy. 6

4.
Input data ASAP.
5.
Just as you’ll give out a lot of business cards, you’ll also get a lot. And just as quickly, you will lose them. You’ll leave them on the bar, or forget them in your pocket, where they’ll turn to mush when you throw your pants in the wash. So, as soon as you possibly can, take all the data from those business cards and put it in your smartphone. Make little notes in the contact name to remember who the person is. Better yet, get a card reader like CamCard by IntSig or Business Card Reader by ABBYY – both available on Android and iPhone marketplaces – that will take a picture of a business card and then automatically input the data in your address book. Welcome to the future.
Have fun.
Remember to bring cards, don’t drink too much, input data … what’re we, your moms? Remember that, while the point of networking events is to meet business contacts, these are social engagements. You can meet potential bosses, coworkers, vendors, etc., and still have a good time. There’s no reason why networking events can’t take the place of all those nights out at clubs, doing God knows what to God knows whom and having nothing to show for it in the morning.
SOME WAYS TO GET STARTED
Biztobiznetworking.com contains a comprehensive list of networking events in South Florida, including seasonal business expos at the Broward Convention Center that draw hundreds of businesspeople from all over South Florida. And with that quality also comes quantity – Biz to Biz Networking hosted or co-hosted nine events in South Florida last month alone. The group has been around since 1985 and hosts upward of 145 events each year. Young Professionals for Covenant House. If you want to party for a cause, many South Florida charities have a young professionals auxiliary group that hosts events to network while also raising money for host charities. One of the most popular is Young Professionals for Covenant House (Youngpros.net). Membership costs $25 per year or $125 for a lifetime membership. That gets you discounted admissions to all events, plus an invitation to members-only events. The group hosts a few events each month, including mixers, trips to sporting events, volunteer opportunities and miscellaneous happenings like the upcoming 5K on A1A, which takes place May 21. The Professional Social Networking Group, better known as PSNG, holds events like clockwork every other Thursday from 5:30 to 8 p.m. There is never a cover for their events and the hosting event provides one free cocktail to attendees. These events are a great way to put yourself out there at no cost. Jeff Tockman, the friendly face of PSNG, is also a business consultant and owner of Tockman Consulting. To learn more about Jeff Tockman and PSNG, visit Professionasocialnetworkinggroup.com. NetParty.com. Like most other urban locations in the U.S., South Florida has a Netparty.com group (Southflorida. netparty.com). It’s free to join, but all groups are closed, so you have to sign up to learn about events. You can join on Facebook, LinkedIn or at the NetParty website. Google “Networking Events in South Florida,” or utilize sites like Meetup.com, Eventbrite, LinkedIn or even in the ordinarily unprofessional reaches of Facebook. Get online, get informed and then get active. THE SOUTH FLORIDA PALM - PROFESSIONAL AND LEISURE MAGAZINE

WINS THE RACE How Colton Ralston turned a childhood hobby into a recession-proof career
A
s a young boy growing up in the suburbs of Boston, Colton Ralston was always fascinated with anything that had two wheels and an engine. And like most boys – he owned his first scooter at 16 and got his first motorcycle at 21. In the fall of 1999, Ralston moved to Boca Raton to attend Lynn University. He realized in sunny South Florida that there was a market for a cheaper mode of transportation, so he turned his childhood fascination into a lucrative scooter business. “I’ve been doing this my whole life,” he says. “I did it for fun before I did it for a business. When I was younger, I was more into motorcycles, but the older I got the more I started to understand the two wheel business.” But that wasn’t the only inspiration behind Ralston’s scooter business. “When I was growing up, I remember gas prices going through the roof,” he says. “Prices had tripled, everything got really expensive and I just started to see a niche for scooters. It’s a cheaper way for people to move around, without having to pay for car insurance, without having to pay for 15 miles per gallon.” The Great Recession helped his business – gas prices spiked and insurance premiums soared – and scooters grew more appealing. “Anytime the news airs segments about gas prices going up, people look for an alternative to commute,” he says. “It’s a great tool for young families. A lot of people in their 20s and mid-30s are just looking for a way to get around town and not spend a lot of money.” Ralston says he also sees a surge in sales during the winter months when snow birds are in town, during tax season and when students go back to school. “Our scooters range from $699 for entry level model, $1,000 to $2,000 for mid-range level and the high-end ones range from $2,000-$3,000. Go to a dealership and the prices of our scooters are a fraction of what a car sells for,” he says. “Scooters are much cheaper to maintain than a car – from oil changes to tires. Everything is less expensive.” Ralston has been in business for four years now. How did he
survive that dreaded first year? “It’s a lot of hard work,” he says. “It’s never giving up, being persistent, sticking with it and rising above those hard days.” Ralston says saving his money and investing it back into the business were paramount in surviving that first year in operation. “I bought tools to make things a little smoother for the mechanics and ultimately for the consumer,” he says. “It’s very hard work, there’s no manual. Everything we know we taught ourselves. The first year was definitely the hardest.” And with a leap of faith, Ralston launched into the scooter business. Today, nestled in the heart of Mizner Park stands a 5000-square-foot shop, with over 200 scooters, 100 of which are currently on sale. He also has a full repair center. But that’s not all they offer. “We do rentals, we sell parts, we upgrade them, we modify them, we make them faster, anything and everything in the scooter world, the scooter business we do. It’s a one stop shop.” And to those who have a fear of following their dream Ralston says, “As long as it’s positive and you’re helping people and providing a service to the community that is useful, go for it if you believe in it and there’s a market for it.” THE SOUTH FLORIDA PALM - PROFESSIONAL AND LEISURE MAGAZINE

BUILD RELATIONSHIPS, NOT JUST BUSINESS CARDS By Megan Tierney
L
iving in South Florida, we’re lucky to have a plethora of networking opportunities. Everyday there seems to be a chance to pass out business cards, attend events, meet new people and
1
connect with potential clients. When I moved to South Florida seven years ago, I didn’t know anyone. Networking gave me the opportunity to get involved in the community, meet wonderful people
and build confidence. It took time to learn the true power of networking but it has proved to be an invaluable skill. Here are some tips to keep in mind as you head out for your next meet and greet:
Build genuine relationships.
When I think of networking, thoughts come to mind of someone shoving their business card at me, while half-spitting as they quickly tell me what they do and how can I help them (true story). The single most important thing I’ve learned: Networking is not about trading business cards, but building relationships. Generally, people do business with people they like. It takes time to get to know someone and build confidence and trust. Connect with people you want to build genuine friendships with or find interesting. More often than not, somewhere down the line that relationship will end up in a business opportunity. Either way, you’ll have a positive outcome and someone new you respect in your life.
Follow up.
It’s one thing to have a stack of business cards, but if you’re not doing anything with them, it’s useless. After getting someone’s contact information, don’t be afraid to reach out with an appropriate and sincere follow up. Most of the time networking is not about immediate gain, find what works for you and create a long-term plan to stay in touch. Set your calendar to remind yourself to check in with contacts every so often, send some information that may be valuable to them, invite them to a business/networking event or send a note to stay on their radar. Proactively connecting with people you meet will set you apart from the crowd.
3
2
Give without expectations.
Having a take, take, take attitude is not going to get you very far. When building a network, genuinely engage in other people’s interests. Learn how you can benefit them, they will appreciate your help and you can begin to build a foundation. You don’t want someone only calling you when they need something and they don’t want that from you. Build a two-way street where you can both reach out and help each other.
Build confidence.
Putting on a smile and making conversation with complete strangers can be an intimidating task, but with practice it can be a great confidence builder. One of the first networking events I went to, as I was walking in the packed event, I tripped and did a baseball slide into the entrance. With everyone looking at me, I had two options: I could get embarrassed or get up, head held high and say, “Well I’ve arrived!” I chose the latter. You are in charge of your own thoughts, actions and confidence. Everyone there is in the same position as you, it’s okay to be anxious, but never doubt your confidence in yourself.
4
Next time you’re networking, don’t think of it as “I’m going to pass out business cards,” but “I’m going to build genuine relationships.” The important part is getting out there, showing up and remembering the quality of the connections that matter— not the stack of business cards.

MARLINS 2014 SEASON PREVIEW
pril. Just the word brings joy to any baseball fan’s ears. The Marlins are back and ready to win. We’ve got a team full of phenoms who are ready to take the National League East by storm. Mark my words, Giancarlo Stanton will shatter a window at Marlins Park this year, Cishek will have at least 30 saves and Jose Fernandez will have 5 or more 15 strikeout games. Bold predictions? Sure, but this team has the potential to contend. Stanton’s unsurpassed power is down right freaky. Cishek has proven his ability to shut down hitters late in the game and has become a lock down closer. Mix that with JFez’s contagiously positive attitude and some of the best raw pitching you are ever going to see out of a 21 year old and we’ve got ourselves a pretty solid foundation for the Marlin’s future. Christian Yelich is going to be an excellent addition in left field at the start of this season. He can
hit for average, has speed and his glove speaks for itself. The Fish also added Florida native Jarrod Saltalamacchia, a brick house behind the plate and a shoe in for more than 15 homers at the catcher’s position, something they’ve been lacking in previous seasons. Another great pickup for 2014 was veteran shortstop Rafael Furcal. Typically a veteran, 3-time All Star, and Rookie of the Year (2000) wouldn’t be changing his primary position to 2B this late in his career, or ever for that matter. Although, in the Marlins case this year, not only is it worth it but it also makes a whole lot of sense. Adeiny Hechavarria, the Marlins current shortstop, will go down as one of the smoothest infielders of all time. It is a true pleasure to be able to watch him work his magic with the glove at short. Upcoming rookie prospect Andrew Heaney will soon get his shot at the bigs. His fastball comes in regularly in the mid 90s and he’s got a filthy slider to go along with it. Expect to see the young lefty striking out major leaguers no later than the All Star break. Those of you who tuned in last season will recall fillin right fielder Marcell Ozuna, who replaced an injured Giancarlo Stanton. Before he himself got injured for the rest of the season, he was throwing out unsuspecting runners from the outfield on a daily basis. If all goes well he will be in the starting lineup at centerfield on opening day. Still having trouble believing in the Marlins this year? Tear out your own copy of the Miami Marlins’ 2014 season schedule poster (pages 16-17) and watch for yourself while our locals boys do work this season in Miami. GO FISH!

COMFORT
I
ZONE
talk to a lot of people—it’s part of my job and I have to keep my ear to the ground in the industry to be successful. One problem that I hear from most fishermen I talk to is that the fish aren’t biting their go-to baits. Many anglers will tend to fish by history. Everyone has their favorite bait. It’s the one that they are most confident in, and tend to pick this bait up first or throw it cast after cast most of the day. It’s the bait that they caught their record bass on, or filled a limit or won a tournament on. Whatever the case, these “goto baits” can either make or break a good day on the water. Fishing conditions change every day. Fish move, food supply, pressure and situations change as quickly as the weather can move in on you. One thing that should also change is your bait. Coming out of your comfort zone is something, which, naturally for humans, is tough to do, but important in being a successful fisherman. To be honest, I myself struggle with this all the time. Recently, I fished a tournament with a friend by the name of Anthony “5 oz” Hunt. Anthony is a local pro and fishing guide who also happens to be a chef for a premiere restaurant in Fort Lauderdale. For weeks before this particular tournament we had a good amount of success fishing with a soft plastic top-water lure, swimming it through weeds and over groups of lily pads and grass clumps on the lake. The top water lure is exciting and fun to fish; because of the huge strikes, it can trigger and for the fact that you are constantly, for the most part, reeling with keeps you on your toes. This day, however, was different. The fish were moving slow and didn’t feel like chasing their baits to eat, but more so holding in patterns that required a slow falling bait that would pass through the water column right in front
of their faces, triggering them to eat. The technique used in shallow water to fish this way is called “flippin’,” and it happens to be out of my comfort zone. When fishing this way, you have to throw everything else aside, put your head down and flip and flip and flip. Flippin’ can be repetitive, but it can also lead you to catching some monster bass that are holding tight to cover. Anthony put a fish over seven pounds in the boat that day and even though we didn’t cash a check in the tournament, it was another top ten finish and good to be out on the water practicing a technique and getting more comfortable with it. Always have the right equipment for the job at hand. Flippin’ in heavy cover, make sure you have heavy braded line, a heavy rod and a reel that can take a lot of pressure and weight. A lot of the time you will find yourself pulling on fish that gets wrapped up around weeds or wood. Loosing a good fish can cause heartbreak so make sure to be prepared and cover all bases. I use a 7’6” Rapsody Fishing “Beast” model Hot Rod, a BPS Johnny Morris Signature Series Reel with a Hawg Tech “Hawg Handle” and 60-pound Sunline Fx2 Braid to ensure no snap offs and plenty of fish in the boat.
