PRESIDENT ’S MESSAGE

Dear Members, Just as we were moving into some degree of normalcy at the Club, with robust member visits, F&B outlets regaining their buzz, some semblance of sports returning and the Club cautiously taking on banquet reservations, it was somewhat disheartening to learn of the government’s announcement that the country would be moving back to Phase 2 (Heightened Alert) from 16 May into end-June. However, the safety of our Members and the population at large is paramount and we are pleased to hear that the government will be easing restrictions over the next few weeks. It is testament to the hard work, diligence and innovative spirit of our staff that the SCC pulled through those four weeks of near-closure. The F&B department launched a more extensive Takeaway & Delivery service and kept Members excited with new offerings and promotions every week. While our takeaway revenue alone cannot match the combined dine-in revenue from all our operating outlets, it was nevertheless an impressive contribution. As we continue to adapt to this evolving “new normal”, we will look into how we can fulfil our Members’ also-evolving consumption habits within our limited space and capacity. We remain cautiously optimistic in these times and, as you’ll see from the next few pages of this issue, the Club will operate as usual; F&B specials and promotions have been planned to titillate your tastebuds, interesting social events organised for you to occupy your time, and activities to engage all Members will continue every week/month. I am also happy to see our Sections rallying to keep spirits up and minds and bodies active with different types of activities and modified internal competitions whenever and wherever they can. The club would normally have created activities and festivities around the UEFA Euro Cup 2020. Unfortunately, we were in a ‘heightened alert’ state and are likely to remain so right up to the Finals on 12 July. However, with the Olympics soon to be upon us, our staff are busily planning to capture its spirit in the Club. More information and details will be sent out to Members via the e-blasts.

In the meantime, Parents, do check out the schedule of the different children’s camps for Football, Tennis, Hockey, Cricket and other sports that will be held through July and August. In particular, we are happy to announce the launch of the SCC’s new hockey academy – the Hockey SCChool – led by the Club’s Hockey Section Head Coach Kanan Packrisamy. In this issue, Kanan shares more about the academy and what it hopes to achieve from coaching budding hockey players of all ages. Members would have read in the newspapers that the F1 event in Singapore has been cancelled. It has been one of the most significant highlights for the SCC each of the years that it was held. It was a very special privilege to be right in the middle of the circuit with 1,200 Members and guests availing themselves of this special treat each of the three days of the event. Let us hope that the F1 may return in subsequent years and we continue to have the privilege of being in the middle of the circuit. We thank you for your patience with us these past weeks as together we navigated through the safe measures that are in place to keep you and your loved ones and our staff safe. Your support of all the services and offerings we have provided to you is very much appreciated and we will continue to strive to present you with new offerings. Please also remember to continue to abide by the safe measures and treat our safe management ambassadors with courtesy as they keep you safe and also help ensure the Club remains in compliance and does not risk having its operations halted by the authorities. As one SCC family, we can pull through this. Stay safe at the Clubhouse!

SCC EMBARKS ON COACH TRAINING PROGRAM AMIDST PLANS FOR FOOTBALL DEVELOPMENT SCC is the first private club and entity to enrol in FAS’s football coaching program - others being SportSG and PA - and following this, the Football Section aims to develop its own coaching capabilities to grow its SCC Football Academy, while also heeding the call to support the “Unleash the Roar!” national project, engage and give back to the community. From 17 - 18 April 2021 (Saturday – Sunday), the Singapore Cricket Club (SCC) organised the first of its coaching education program and collaborated with the Football Association of Singapore (FAS) to jointly conduct a Grassroots Coaching Course. A total of 16 members from the SCC Football Section over a diverse age range spent two days with FAS coaches to learn how to educate and develop young football players aged 6 – 9 years. Many of the members, themselves footballers who have played competitively for the SCC in local and regional tournaments, were taught the essential skills and qualities a coach needs to have to plan and conduct training sessions. “This is the first phase of the SCC Football Section’s initiative to raise up its own team of coaches who will then be able to develop our own young football talents as well as help the wider community via engagement programs,” explained the club’s Football Section Convenor Amos Boon. “We have to be proactive and do our part to nurture Singapore’s football landscape,” he continued. As an affiliate of the FAS, we were excited at the announcement and wanted to be part of the chapter in the “Unleash the Roar!” campaign. We knew we had the infrastructure and capability to be an extended arm of this nationwide project. We thus connected with the FAS Coaching Department and managed to organise this within three weeks. We intend to grow our current academy with Elite teams with specialised training modules and also assist our current coaches in further developing their pathway. “Our hope is that after this course, we will have a wider pool of qualified coaching talent which we can tap into to grow football not just within SCC but beyond. We will also continue to work with FAS and its “Unleash the Roar!” campaign, to keep training our coaches, and send them for FAS’s higher coaching modules in the future.” FAS President Lim Kia Tong graced the opening of the course on the SCC Padang Field and expressed his delight at SCC being the first National Football League (NFL) club that FAS has collaborated exclusively with to run the course for their members. He emphasised that this initiative to share FAS’ technical expertise in coaching represents a vital part of the Unleash the Roar project as quality grassroots coaching will go a long way in ensuring high participation rates in football for young children – increasing their exposure to football from a young age. Mr. Lim also presented attendees with their coaching course certificates and pledged to show his support for more of such initiatives in the future from other affiliates, opening the pathway for more aspiring coaches to consider this as their careers. Martin Goerojo, Chairman of SCC’s Games Control Board, said, “I am very glad to see the Section pushing out such initiatives which help us, the Section Members, to self-improve. As a player whose competitive playing days are a thing of past, I wish to give back to the game and to the Club by being able to nurture the passion for the sport to the next generation. “The course has been a good eye opener in giving us a structured approach to organizing a training session. As players, we have an understanding of the game and the drills; the course on the other hand gave us the structure and the ability to plan sessions that focus on various technical aspects of the game, be it dribbling with the ball, first touch, passing and shooting or 1-v-1, for various age groups… all learnt first-hand from FAS coaches and technical staff.

4

He added, “Our first batch of 16 SCC Football Section coaches is excited to apply our newly found knowledge in our own SCC Football Academy; we currently have 50 kids in the program and we wish to grow the number significantly. Having coaches who have played the game and gained a formal education on how to coach kids will equip us with well qualified resources to succeed. Who knows, maybe the kids from our SCC Football Academy will be part of the team to represent Singapore in the World Cup one day.”

“It has always been my objective to give something back to the sport that has given me a good life full of wonderful memories whilst playing the beautiful game,” said Glyn Vince, Captain of the Football Section. “I have been fortunate enough to play the game at a high level making many long life friends and memories all over the world. “It has always been my desire to pass on the knowledge and skills to those youngsters with a passion for the game and in particular those lesser fortunate children whom do not have maybe the funds to make today’s academys. I have always discussed with the PADANTIQUES and the Section to go into the community and bring lesser fortunate and orphaned children to The Padang and coach them and let them try the great game. Now that I have successfully navigated the Grassroots Coaching School I hope that we can make these dreams a reality and put the SCC into the community and give something back.” Growing with the Club from a JSM to a OTM, Football Section Member Chang Guo Guang hopes to channel all that he learnt from the coaching course into the SCC Football Academy and serve his part towards Goal 2034: “I’ve had experience coaching children from ages 5-10 for SCC Football Academy several years back. Those sessions delivered were based off a syllabus formulated by a private coaching school and the mode of delivery was largely from my own personal experience as a former professional athlete. “With the FAS Grassroots Coaching Course, I saw an opportunity for self-evaluation and I thought that through the course I would also be able to identify areas for improvement; so I decided to sign up for it. “The two-day course made me more conscious about the structure of a good training session, i.e the various components etc., as well as the characteristics of the various age group,” Chang explained. “This knowledge will certainly allow me to better plan training sessions in the future that would allow the children to learn optimally with maximum enjoyment.” 25-year old Brittanie Bartlett was the sole female footballer at the course and she held her own: “I think this FAS Grassroots Coaching Course was great. I had loads of fun and I learnt loads. “I’ve done some informal coaching of kids- mainly under 12s and i thoroughly enjoyed it. So I thought it would be good to have some official coaching training so that I could help the kids even more.

Bartlett noted, “I think the main thing I’ve taken away is that the trainings need to be age-specific and we need to keep in mind that it’s more about allowing the kids to develop their skills at their individual pace but to also encourage teamwork and camaraderie because after all, football is a team sport. “I hope to be able to apply my knowledge in a practical setting. I’m doing my masters in education (primary school) and so I’ll already be in a setting with children so I hope to be able to teach and guide in the classroom but also to coach and inspire on the field.”

APPLICATION OF ANTI-MICROBIAL COATING FOR HIGH CONTACT AREAS Protects Members and staff by keeping treated surfaces continuously disinfected for up to 180 days In mid-June 2021, all high contact areas in the SCC Clubhouse were been treated with a self-disinfecting antimicrobial coating - including doors and railings, Member and staff restrooms and changing room, the gym, etc. Using this anti-microbial coating technology, treated surfaces are now continuously being disinfected against bacteria, fungi and viruses for up to 180 days from the time of the electrostatic spray application – this is greatly more efficient than general cleaning and disinfection which is only effective at the point of application.

sdpro: Anti-Microbial Coating Technology The same technology as what SCC used in July last year, sdpro is an anti-microbial coating that neutralises microbes (i.e. bacteria, fungi, viruses) which come into contact with the treated surfaces by physically rupturing the target’s organism’s cell membrane on contact, thereby reducing their ability to infect. As it is applied to the high contact areas via electrostatic spray, the coating molecularly bonds to the surfaces semi-permanently and cannot be easily removed by regular cleaning processes – hence, it is continuously self-disinfecting the treated surfaces for up to 180 days, with just one application. In comparison, other cleaning agents kill germs during the disinfecting process, but the killing stops once the solution dries, hence the need for repeated rounds of disinfecting. This self-disinfecting coating is made with a US EPA-registered (USA’s Environmental Protection Agency) antimicrobial active ingredient that is safe for humans and eco-friendly.

Is it effective against COVID-19? This anti-microbial coating contains US’s Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)-approved ingredient that is proven to be effective against COVID-19 and similar strains of coronavirus. It has been tested against the norovirus (non-enveloped) which, according to CDC’s guidelines, are “Product capable of inactivating “nonenveloped viruses (norovirus, rotavirus, adenovirus, poliovirus) are broadly antiviral and capable of inactivating both enveloped and non-enveloped viruses”. It has also been tested to be effective against the H1N1 virus (flu virus).

Is it safe for human contact? The coating has been tested by the US EPA and various international 3rd party laboratories and is found to be harmless to the skin and tested to be safe for also infants and kids. It has also been applied in childcare centres to combat against HFMD (hand, foot & mouth) and centres have reported between 80-100% success rate in the elimination of outbreaks of these infections.

Kanan Packrisamy

Head of the newly-form hockey academy,

Hockey SCChool

Dynamic Head Coach of the multiple-national league winning SCC Hockey Section. One of just 10 inaugural Singapore Coach Medallion recipients out of more than 150 nominees at the CoachSG Conference 2019. And now founder and head of SCC’s newest sports academy, the Hockey SCChool. In this issue, we speak with Kanan Packrisamy to find out more about this impactful sportsman and coach, and his vision for hockey education for our young talents.

TELL US ABOUT YOURSELF Born in the early seventies, I am blessed to have lived gainfully through the transformation of our lives into the Digital age from our good old days - I am comfortable with gadgets, from using the optional pager to the essential mobile phone; I was at ease with getting down from public transportation vehicles to make calls from a public telephone, to now having connectivity at all times. I have embraced the vast changes to our lives which we take for granted these days and strived to evolve with it. I have trained myself to be relevant for the era we live in and hopefully for the future. Despite taking some pleasure from being a man of the times, I wear many hats and a feather on one of them is the life I have been blessed with as Head Hockey Coach of the Singapore Cricket Club, the best hockey club in the world. As it is said, you cannot live only on love and fresh air; I too have a day job and very loving and supportive family. I work as the Group Chief Financial and Operating Officer at leading health supplement group Herbal Pharm. As demanding as the job is, I have a very progressive employer who allows and encourages not just me but all staff to have a meaningful life outside of work. He too is a Member of our Club and many of our key meetings have taken place in the various F&B outlets in the Club. My wife is the most understanding and supportive person. In my early coaching years, she supported the family’s financial burden until I was able to bear more of that responsibility and now, she has decided to care full time for our two angelic children who are four and two - none of the three are hockey players, yet. She too is a Member here at our Club and enjoys its sheer location, service and grandeur.

8

My parents live with us and our multi-generation family have always placed being happy as our principle goal. We find joy in all the small things and I firmly believe that the sum of all these have truly made my life one worthy of living and extremely meaningful. COVID-19 has given us all, like many other families, more time to spend with each other. I am grateful for this, but hockey is a part of me that cannot be separated and I yearn for us to get back into the swing of things. In this vein, I am truly delighted that we have been able to establish in our Club a fully fledged SCC Hockey Academy.

HOW DID THE IDEA FOR THE HOCKEY ACADEMY COME ABOUT? When I first took the coaching assignment in 2011, I had coined the phrase, “The Hockey SCChool” as a great name for an academy that I had hoped to start here. It has taken us all sometime but we are going to hit the ground running from here on end. To provide some background, I joined SCC after what I like to think was a successful spell coaching the Hollandse Club. I worked closely with the parent volunteers who ran the Dutch Youth Hockey and the manner in which that academy was run impressed me. Also, I lived in Australia for four years and hockey was a very big part of my life then too. I worked with kids in a loose academy setting regularly and I truly wanted to bring the same to SCC. We had always had an informal “academy” in SCC from 2011, but it was for our really young Junior Members. We used the academy to foster our Club’s culture and hone in on their technical ability to

FEATURE

allow these young players to play with our senior Members. It was just another part of our overall training program and the success of both the SCC Men’s and Ladies’ hockey teams over the last six years is due to this ability to bleed these very young players into our top teams. Even while that training continued over the past years, the Section Committee worked continually together with my hockey consulting company and I to try to set a proper structure in place to start a formal academy; we had a few road blocks, perhaps some selfimposed, but we still worked tirelessly to get the finished product “The Hockey SCChool” on the shop window. In this regard, the efforts of our Deputy President Mathavan Devadas and former convenor Intekhab Khan are greatly appreciated, as well as that of our current convenor Subhas Nathan in finally getting the academy approved as an entity rearing to go.

WHAT AGE GROUPS CAN JOIN THE ACADEMY? DO THEY NEED ANY ADVANCED KNOWLEDGE ABOUT THE SPORT? The Hockey SCChool aspires to be the academy of choice for beginners. We want to teach as many boys and girls to play hockey the SCC way. With my vast experience in working with young players, some of whom I have coached from the academy stage as a 6 or 7 year old and groomed into National League winning players, our track record is sound and we await kids to walk through our doors and into a pathway to hockey success. We take in kids from the age of 5 onwards, even younger if they can display prior knowledge of playing hockey. We do not have an age ceiling as we want to cater to beginners of all ages and get them on the pathway so they can eventually join the Club proper as a Junior Sports Members. So, you do not need any advance knowledge or even experience. All kids need to join is the right attitude and a desire to learn and train; the rest will sort itself out.

WHO ARE SOME OF THE COACHES WHO WILL BE INVOLVED IN THE ACADEMY? We have assembled a great team of coaches to ensure the players develop into not only great hockey players but also into outstanding people. I will lead a team of three coaches with an auxiliary team of volunteer coaches from amongst the parents and our Section Members. I have brought on board Paramjit Singh, or “PS” as he is popularly known, who comes with more than two decades’ worth of experience working with young players. The humble, quiet

gentleman is known for his dedication and exceptional impartation skills. PS will aid to make the academy a truly professional one with a high focus on players learning hockey in an extremely fun manner. Amongst the parent volunteers lined up, we have our very own Ken Forbes. The former Team GB and South African international has overseen our Men’s 1s four title wins since winning our inaugural one in 2015. The eminently qualified player-coach is very passionate about youth development and both his kids play hockey with his son, Rafe exhibiting skills beyond his age. Gerry Butler is another parent volunteer. The aviation executive moved to Singapore last year and has vast experience in academy programs from his days in Ireland where he ran the largest hockey academy there. Gerry also played in the European Hockey League and will bring with him an abundance of care and concern for the kids in the academy. We also intend to use academy graduates such as Muhammed Fariz Bashir, our pint-sized lion-hearted Singapore International. He is currently serving National Service but when time permits, he will chip in to weave some magic for the kids. Former international Anandraj Rengaraj and current national women’s player Tiffany Ong will also lend a hand when our numbers start to grow.

WHAT WOULD A TYPICAL TRAINING SESSION BE LIKE? WHAT WILL THE PLAYERS LEARN? INDIVIDUAL v TEAM At the Hockey SCChool, the focus will be on the development of each kid and less on the team. This will develop strong players; we believe that these strong players will be able to fit into any team including the ones at SCC.

FEAR MANAGEMENT Right from the onset we will make it clear that making mistakes is acceptable. By withdrawing the fear of making mistakes, we believe that true learning begins.

TRAININGS The sessions will be highly focused on technical development, i.e., skills enhancement. However, each session will have equal measure of fun elements. All drills will have an objective of why players have to master it. This way, they will eventually be able to apply the skill when required.

COMPETIVENESS We will prepare every player to step into the pitch wanting to win. We will teach players how to embrace the joys of victory but also emphasise how to deal with the agony of defeat. We will ensure

• Grooming leaders in all areas on and off the pitch • We make players that come to us become better people! • We are aware our job does not end on the hockey pitch • The success of our academy can also be seen from the behaviour of players when they are not training • Inculcate sound sporting etiquette in all that we do at The Hockey SCChool Our syllabus will start with core skills and advance core skills and branch out from there based on the level of the kids. Invariably, we will split the kids into age/proficiency based groups.

WHAT ARE THE GOALS YOU’D LIKE TO ACCOMPLISH FOR HOCKEY SCCHOOL?

players understand that in order to win you must give your very best, but at times that won’t be enough, but we cannot stop giving our best. We will inculcate in each player the value that by giving your best every time, you actually are already a champion even when you do not win. At the development stage of a hockey player’s journey, team results should be secondary and the individual player’s performance primary and we will adhere to this ideal. Besides these, our methodology will be as follows: • Instilling in them diligence as well as application of intelligence • Encourage mastering the simple things • Making them see that the result of consistently doing the simple things well will ensure positive outcomes • Teaching advance skills even when they are new and show them when to use them • Exhibit how to use encouragement to get the best out of each other • Weed out criticism that is not constructive • Utilising a blend of European, Australian and Asian brand of hockey

We want to run this academy for a long time to come. However, in the short-term we want to ensure that every SCC Member knows about The Hockey SCChool. We want to encourage as many if not all kids whose parents are Members to try out hockey with us at some point. We think the fact that we train on the Padang at a nice 5.30pm timing belt fosters an opportunity for the family to get together after training for dinner and fun on a weekday. Being a numbers man, I have to set some targets for myself and I want to get 30 kids to sign up before the end of the year. Despite COVID-19 restrictions and the like, I am sure we can get us to this decent footing when you compare us to the local Hockey Academy landscape. In the course of the next five years, we must have100 kids on our books and perhaps three different training slots, probably for the different age groups including a weekend slot. I basically want to position The Hockey SCChool as an academy for beginners to get a solid hockey foundation. That tagging will be enough as graduates from the academy will probably sign up with SCC proper and we can aid their high performance development at that juncture.

The Hockey SCChool at a Glance: Dates/ Times/ Venue: • Happening on Tuesdays • 5.30pm to 6.30pm per session • Starting from Tuesday, 6 July • Held on the hallowed lawns of the SCC Padang Fees (excluding GST) • SCC Hockey Section Members: S$15 per lesson • SCC Members: S$20 per lesson • Non-SCC Members: S$25 per lesson What will the coaching sessions entail? • There will be three terms of 12 lessons each • Total 36 lessons per calendar year • There will be celebrity coach clinics once a term on top of these • There will also be week-long Hockey Camps during the school holidays. Our first camp will be from Monday, 19 July 2021, to Friday, 23 July 2021, 9am to 11am also on the Padang Uniforms • High quality sublimated ones similar to those worn by the SCC National League winners. As these are being produced, kids are expected to wear Black, White or Yellow tops to training with black shorts and white socks. Please bring along Hockey Sticks, Shin Guards, Mouth Guards and turf shoes. If you do not Hockey Sticks, we can lend you one.

For more information and/or to register your children, email Coach Kanan at trueblueconsult@gmail.com

Running in the new normal 2019, we miss you. After the unbelievable turn of events of the past 18 months or so, we are now finding ourselves trying to live with the dreaded Coronavirus whilst still trying to curb and eventually eliminate it. Lockdowns, quarantines, social distancing and practicing proper hygiene have come far in helping us stay safe but with many compromises in our everyday lives. Joggers and runners in particular have felt this paradigm shift unlike many others, with the constant lament of wearing a mask, making sure to avoid crowded routes and regularly monitoring their health. As it is probably still a far way off to complete normalcy, here’s a simple guide for running during the new normal.

Masked up, Gassed up The most important part of the cardio equation begins with a little thing called oxygen. The intensity propagated by the act of running requires more oxygen than usual. Put a layer of fabric over your mouths and noses and you’re left with a slightly alarming problem. Remove the mask when necessary and plan your route to ensure as few joggers/ runners as possible encounter you and vice versa. You will have to abide by the rules though as masks must be worn at all other times so remove it right before you take off and put it back on immediately when you’re done. Pro-tip: Use disposable masks during your runs so you wouldn’t have to constantly deal with sweat soaked masks on your laundry list.

Beat the Crowd A compact island like Singapore with a high volume of people living in close proximity mixed with the popularity of jogging or running within the community all but guarantees that you will bump into a few others during your run. While some have chosen to stay in with a treadmill, if you’re not ready to invest in one or generally prefer the outdoors, measures should be taken to avoid getting close to one another. COVID-19 has been found to be air-borne and the average runner’s breathing is intensified during the activity, which in turn ensures a higher chance of spread or infection. Thus, try re-routing and/or planning a different time for your run and you’ll be able to continue reaping those cardiovascular benefits without compromising your safety.

Check yourself before…You know. At the heart of the matter, Covid-19 is a respiratory illness. And if you didn’t already know, running relies heavily on regulated breathing. While this may seem to be the perfect recipe for disaster for the runner, one of the best ways to protect yourself is to ensure you listen to your body and immediately act if you feel something is off. One of the most terrifying elements of COVID-19 is its delayed displays of symptoms. Constant temperature checks should be performed at home regardless if you’re feeling slightly under the weather or even perfectly fine. Subsequent swab tests should be administered for people who have been in contact with others who are infected and quarantine should be enforced if the situation calls for it. While it doesn’t have to be all gloom and doom, some change is necessary for the outdoor running enthusiasts. And by doing our part in the battle against this unseen enemy, we will still be able to enjoy some semblance of normalcy until we are able to slip on our running shoes and dismiss those uncomfortable masks once and for all. National Day Celebrations at The Padang

F EAT U RE

The Singapore Cricket Club is a national treasure and a well-known institution, which was established in 1852. The Club stands at the center of the city’s colonial heart, the Padang, a public space that has witnessed many of Singapore’s triumphs and upheavals since its independence and the National Day Parade on 9 August.

National Day Parades since 1966 National Day celebrations with a parade featuring the march-past of military and civilian contingents were held yearly at the Padang from 1966 to 1975 until NDP was decentralised and held at 13 selected centres across Singapore. The NDP was celebrated at the National Stadium for the first time in 1976 and thereafter at the Padang or the National Stadium, with the exception of 1977, 1979 and 1981. In this issue, we look back at how the Club has enjoyed a front-row seat in commemorating the nation’s celebrations over the years as Singapore marks its 53rd year of independence.

“THE DISCOVERY OF ITALIAN WINES” WORKSHOP 26 Apr 2021, Gilmour Room The Wine Circle presented another enjoyable in-person educational tasting workshop of ten-award winning wines. It was an honour to have Mr. Roderic Proniewski, with his impressive credentials, to be the presenter for the evening. Mr. Proniewski has the WSET Certification (with distinction) and is an educator at the prestigious Ecole du Vin de Bordeaux. He is a Senior Judge at IWC London & and an Overseas Guest Judge at Michelangelo South Africa. He introduced eight white grape varietals (Fiano, Garganega, Moscato, Pinot Bianco, Vermentino, Verdicchio, Trebbiano and Pinot Grigio) & 12 red ones (Aglianico, Barbera, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Corvina, Merlot, Sangiovese, Rondinella, Nero D’Avola, Nebbiolo, Montepulciano, and Corvinone) from across 20 wine regions in Italy. It was a full house and an extremely interactive evening with the Members’ numerous queries being answered by Mr. Proniewski. With each wine, he also highlighted the vegetarian, vegan & non-vegetarian cuisines across different regions that can be paired with them. The workshop was conducted under the COVID-19 guidelines, and the cozy tables of five facilitated interesting conversations and an opportunity for its participants to bond over wine. The post-workshop feedback was very encouraging and has fueled the Wine Circle Committee to continue to plan and deliver more such events in the following months. The latest Australian wine tasting, which was a virtual event, had the largest number of participants and its review will be presented in the next Padang issue.

The Wine Circle Committee encourages all wine lovers to join as Members. We are planning various exciting events and we look forward to seeing our Members at these specially curated events. More information will be sent to the Members through email and the Wine Circle WhatsApp group. We wish everyone safety and good health. For more information and/or to register as a Member of the Wine Circle, please email cassie.wong@scc.org.sg.

Wines curated by Jay Luthra and Vlad Roman Arno Jay Luthra and Vlad Roman Arno are both long term residents of Singapore. The lack of affordable speciality wines in the Lion City inspired them to bring boutique wines from different countries, directly from wine farms to the wine amateurs in Singapore. Thus, in 2019, they decided to start Red and White Pte Ltd.

KOMBUCHA WORKSHOP

ACM TOUR – LIFE IN EDO

A kombucha workshop held on 8 May 2021 gave members the opportunity to learn about the history and science behind kombucha, including why separating the SCOBY “baby” layers from the “mother” layers is essential to get that perfect bottle of fermented tea. The two hour session also included a guided hands-on brewing with insider tips and the tasting of some commercial kombucha from around the world. A second session was held on the following Saturday due to the overwhelming demand.

In celebration of 55 years of Singapore-Japan relations, the Asian Civilisations Museum held a special exhibition to take participants on a journey into two popular cities in Japan – Edo, today’s Tokyo, and Kyoto, the old imperial capital. Due to the heightened COVID-19 measures, this exclusive tour conducted by Ms Darlene Kasten was held virtually on 28 May 2021. Participants had a chance to view displays of colourful woodblock prints depicting fascinating trends and lifestyles, and masterworks of photography showing life during Edo-period Japan (1603 – 1868). They also explored the sights of present-day Kyoto, and got a peek into the lives of geishas, all through the lens of Singaporean photographer Russel Wong.

ACM TOUR – MALAY WORLD On 7 May 2021, Members went on an exclusive tour of The Malay World at the Asian Civilisations Museum, conducted by SCC Member Ms Darlene Kasten. They visited two of the museum’s permanent galleries – Ancestors and Rituals in Southeast Asia and Islamic Art - and examined the museum’s spectacular displays of the material culture associated with Nusantara, the enduring world of the Malays.

NATIONAL PAIRS 2021 AT SCC The Bowls Section, together with the support of the Club, was successful in bringing the National Pairs to SCC after much effort. It has been many years since we last hosted a national event in our own backyard and the first on our new green. The decision was well received by our Members and we fielded a record of eleven pairs - eight men and three ladies. The field contains a mixture of young and old, former champions, and bowlers who have only taken up the sport over the last year. At the point of writing, a couple more round-robin games are needed to determine the quarter-finalists for men and the semi-finalist for ladies. The SCC men’s teams of Ganesh and Edmund, Srinivasan and Zoher, and Melvin and Christian have successfully negotiated their way into the quarter-finals.

A MOMENT OF PAUSE Our bowls season came to an abrupt halt for four weeks over May and June due to the resurgence of COVID-19 cases. We were well into our bowling season with competitions going on simultaneously at the Club and National levels. Apart from the National Pairs, our own SCC Singles has seen semi-finalists for the McKean Cup and the plate tournament determined. The ladies have a crucial round-robin game left to decide the last semi-final spot. Meanwhile, the inaugural Singapore Pairs league held at Tanglin Club is one week away from completion. SCC Team A comprising of Shermeen, Melvin, Amira and Ming Li are already declared winners given their unassailable lead. The battle for second is down to the wire with three teams tied on the same points, with SCC E, represented by Christian, Mary and Rosemary, currently ahead on shot difference. We cannot wait for play to continue.

INAUGURAL BRIDGE GAME VS MCC BRIDGE SECTION Despite local restrictions due to the pandemic, the Bridge Section continues to meet virtually, playing every Monday using the online BBO application. We regularly have gatherings of 30+ people (including Members and their guests). The Section has also been fortunate to exploit a new relationship with the Bridge Section of the Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) in United Kingdom. This contact came through Richard Holloway who is a member of MCC, who happened to play one of the events arranged by the MCC Bridge Section, partnering King Fook Chan, also from SCC Bridge Section. After this event, Richard reverted to MCC and asked if they would be keen to have a bridge game vs SCC Bridge Section. Challenge accepted, this Inaugural game between the two clubs was arranged for Sunday, 16 May. With eight players per team, we played using the Real Bridge System that is used in UK, which also builds in video contact with players, on top of the online system used to play the bridge hands. The SCC team comprised of Edith Somogyi (Convenor) & Sandra Iyer, Usha & Perry Ramanathan, Mike Sharples and Jasbir Kaur as well as Richard Holloway & King Fook Chan. The event was thoroughly enjoyed by both teams and will hopefully be the foundation for regular games between both teams, and eventually Interport status. In passing, but of less importance, MCC won the game!

Darts

Convenor: Helen Campos | Article by: Fahmida Huned

The Darts Section carried on with the Section evenings during April, culminating in its last event on 3 May before the latest round of restrictions were announced to combat the resurgence of community infections in Singapore in compliance with the official guidelines. The Section night on 3 May was particularly special as we had invited representatives from the Balut Section to join us in the Gilmour Room. Everyone had a great evening with several teams on hand to battle for the top scores. We had two teams of four players - two from Balut and two from Darts in each team competing in best of three games in 501 format. Shelia, Mahesh and Tushar represented the Balut Section while the other board comprised of our members. It was a close fight right to the end with Team 1 emerging champions, winning two out of three games. Friendly and Entertaining. (Team 1: Kenneth, Fathima, Tushar, Rod and Team 2: Sheila, Mahesh, Soma, Mohan). At time of writing, all Section activities in the Club are on hold. Let’s all do our part to defeat the spread of this scourge and we can once again resume our normal activities. Take care and stay safe.

MAKING OUR FOOTBALL SECTION EVEN GREATER! INTRODUCING THE NEW FOOTBALL SECTION COMMITTEE MEMBERS The past few months have been eventful and exciting for our Football Section. Firstly, a new Section Committee has been elected; Amos Boon has taken on the role of Convenor and with him is his team comprising of Glyn Vince (Section Captain), Susanne Shaw (Women’s Captain), Natasha Teja (Women’s Vice Captain/ Social), Paul Paffet (Section Treasurer), Rob Gulston (Section Secretary), Chang Guo Guang (JSM Representative), Bruce Loggie (Charity Engagements), Robert Joseph (Competitions Social), Tim Mellet (Competitions - Competitive), Khairul Anwar (Academy), Deferdauz Noordin (Social Media), David Cookson and Justin Madhavan (Sponsorships). The team would like to thank all of you for your trust and confidence in them. They are looking forward to helping all of you meet your sporting needs and make the Football Section even greater!

GRASSROOTS COACHING COURSE AT SCC One of the first tasks which the Section Committee engaged in was the Grassroots Coaching Course. Our Club collaborated with the Football Association of Singapore (FAS) to conduct a two-day grassroot coaching course for our Members. This is also the first time that the FAS has collaborated with an affiliated National Football League (NFL) club. The course was held from 17-18 April, 8am to 4pm daily, and it was conducted by two of FAS’ Grassroot Coach Developers, Ngiap Tai and Shasi Kumar. We are proud to announce that 16 of our Section Members participated in the course which aims to upgrade their skillsets so that they are able to conduct grassroots coaching sessions. The topics covered on the two days included practical sessions such as running, striking of the ball, first touches and also 1v1.

FRIENDLY MATCHES AND COMPETITIONS In April, our Section organised a 4v4 friendly against our neighbour, the Singapore Recreation Club (SRC). The friendly also served as a pilot project for future friendly matches. The event was a success and SCC teams from the various age groups of 45+ / 50+ and 60+ fared well by winning the majority of the games. Our SCC NFL and SCC Tigers boys are participating in the British 4s Open and Masters Tournament which are being held every Saturday at the Tanglin Trust School (TTS). Please follow our page on Instagram @SCCFootballSection to catch the latest results and to see how our boys are doing. All the best for the rest of the season, lads!

MEMBERS’ CUP A BIG HIT ON THE PADANG The current state of affairs has made it hard for sports lovers to enjoy their usual fare. The Hockey Section is no different and we have tried our hand at a variety of things including fitness programs for all, online quiz night, training in small groups on multiple small pitches and on Sengkang’s international Astros, 4v4 competitions trials on indoor and outdoor - we even played one league match in that format - and recently we started offering a Box HIIT class every Wednesday. We were getting by but something was still missing; what we all were craving for was more competition. There’s nothing like a good old tournament or league to tingle your senses and make you feel alive. Example: the “Numbers Cup” – a hockey event originally mooted by our then-convenor, Intekhab Khan, that divides Section Members into 10 teams based on the last digit of their SCC membership number. This was played annually before the Hockey Section’s AGM and Awards night. The “Numbers’ Cup” eventually got a name change to “Members’ Cup” but we continued to stay true to the concept of team division. In April, with 4v4 league competition Members Cup League Table after three rounds. looming for indoor and outdoor, many players would still miss competition as only a few can play the 4v4. Rugby

Convenor: Henry Winter | Special Guest Scribe: Matt ‘Heady’ Head

SCC COMPETES IN MODIFIED TOUCH Due to COVID-19 restrictions, Rugby has taken a backseat and the SCC's own version of Modified Touch has taken over our Thursday evenings on the beautiful Padang. Teams of around six players have been randomly picked (some would say controversially) with four allowed to play each evening. This 13-round competition consisting of semis and finals has been incredibly competitive, with up to eight teams vying for the final three spots as the final rounds continue when restrictions ease. Though most of the Section has been keeping fit thanks to F45 Amoy Street, this is a game for speed and quick feet and we have surely seen the smaller men take control and pay back any 15s grudges which may have been lingering throughout the years from the bottom of various rucks. Over 3,000 tries have been scored in 420 games (teams play three games a night lasting eight minutes, and the best of three wins). Speedsters like Edward Bautista, Migual Williams, Adam Vine, Teestsuo Furukawa, Ray Peh and George Oliver are always dangerous. The Gold Team run by Casey Mee and Terry Noe with a discipline Mao would be proud of sit well above the competition unbeaten with 10 wins. The 2nd placed Blue Team with Captain Mikey Oliver on a summer hiatus and Alex Howard and Raphael Lansonneur on the 'non-rugby related' injury list may struggle to secure a semi-final spot. The semi-final everyone would like to see would pit Ben Radclyffe's Red Team against Andy Wheble's Brown for a round 2 showdown.

The familiarity of Stumps is then a great place to rehydrate over a nice cold bottle of Lion Island Larger as we wave to acquaintances from across the room. Friday mornings are reserved for Asia Physio hamstring sessions helped with a bit of oil from Penrite. Big thanks to the SCC Sports Department for helping to facilitate our Mod Touch; they have done an amazing job as always.

The Rugby Section is sorry to see its long-standing semiprofessional secretary move back to Australia. Jeremy ‘Birdy’ Bird has been one of the most recognizable players in Singapore for the past six years due his uncompromising physically and unique hair styling. Despite the hair, he has offered a huge amount to the Section, playing in every team, captaining most, and leaving with more silverware than the Spanish from the New World. Club Captain Murry Wylie presented Birdy with a Green Cap in recognition of his contribution to the Club and Section. Both Jeremy and fiancée Courtney have promised to host any Section Members who are visiting Melbourne in the future.
