PRESIDENT ’S MESSAGE

Dear Members, We would like to thank the Members for your support of all the Resolutions at the recently concluded SGM. With regards to the Resolution for the application for an InPrinciple Approval for the renewal of the lease for the Club building and the Padang field, once this is in place, it will open up more opportunities to engage with the SLA on matters pertaining to the lease renewal. We shall endeavour to keep the Members informed of key developments in the lease renewal process. You would have received my message relating to the closure of the Fruit Machine Operations in the Jackpot Room effective 1st December, 2021. It was not an easy message to write as the Fruit Machines have been so much a part of the Club. Even as late as 2018, the Jackpot Room was a hive of activity with its own little community of regular users enjoying the banter and companionship of like-minded Members. Over the years, a large number of Members, and I am firmly included, would wonder in for a quick flutter on the Fruit Machines as we walked past the Jackpot Room towards other areas of the Club or on the way to the carpark. However, in recent years, the community of users has been dwindling and it is now time to look at new opportunities and create new communities of Members who will find additional touch-points to continue coming to the Club. The GC welcomes Members to submit proposals for the alternative use(s) of the Jackpot Room. If you have a particular proposal for the Jackpot Room, do email your suggestions to the General Manager (sean.boyle@scc.org.sg). We are fast approaching the end of what has been another year affected by the many curbs on gatherings, dining, sports and other activities as we continue with our collective struggles to contain and hopefully in the very near future get on top of COVID-19. The annual POT Games versus the Tanglin Club, due to be held on 20 November, is the latest event to be cancelled; though we hope it is just postponed. Let us also hope we can swiftly return to our signature sports tournaments, be able to once again celebrate our community festivals, enjoy the band in the Main Lounge on Saturday evenings and mostly be able to return to playing sports and be able to congregate in larger numbers. The Club has continued to organise a host of events – some onsite and others virtual – for both adults and kids; some, such as the wildly-popular Pantomine, have limited capacity so do register for the events early to enjoy the early-bird rates and to also ensure you have been able to reserve your place. I am thankful for our Members’ patience as we constantly adjusted to the changing safe distancing measures from the government

over the past months. With the extension of the Stabilisation Phase as announced by the Multi-Ministry Taskforce (MTI) until 20 November 2021, 2-vaccinated pax restrictions on dine-in will continue and significantly impact on Members’ utilisation of the Club’s F&B outlets. In light of the above restrictions, we have rolled over the Minimum Spend Levy for the affected months into the next quarter and extended Birthday Vouchers valid for the months of October and November to December 2021. I take this opportunity to remind fellow members that their Minimum Spend Levy can be offset against not only dine-in, but also Takeaway & Delivery services for food, wines and spirits – including our Festive Roasts, Cakes, Pastries, Party Platters, Bottle Shop and Hampers. Our F&B Department has laid out a massive festive spread for you, both for your dining pleasure at the Club as well as at home. An enticing list of celebratory bottle prices has also been curated for you, while our popular hampers are back for you to gift family, friends and associates. Do peruse the SCC Festive Booklet 2021 supplement for full information on all the dining, events, and takeaway options for your enjoyment. The Club continues to be a hive of (safe) activity and we are glad that membership enquires are still pouring in. In the spirit of the season, only from now until 31 December 2021, we are offering festive F&B credit bonus rewards for the SCC Membership Referral Program - both members and their newly introduced Members can enjoy F&B credit incentives for successful membership application sign-ups during these two months; more information is available on the inside front cover. Thank you for your continued support of the Singapore Cricket Club. Your votes for all our proposed Resolutions during our recent Special General Meeting on 30 October 2021 are an endorsement of all that we have worked for and achieved this year and intend to do in the coming months to guide the Club in these uncertain times. As we endeavour to look with positive anticipation towards the future, may this festive season be filled with joy and may the new year be one of good health, success and happiness for you and your loved ones. I look forward to seeing you at the Club.

IN CONVERSATION WITH:

N.A.R. KASHWIN

N.A.R. Kashwin (Nom De Plume) is the author of ”Policemen’s Children Aren’t Crooks” - an autobiographical novel based upon the memoir of an eight-year-old girl, growing up in Singapore with all a privileged family could offer presented at her feet at a time in the 1960s. We speak to her to find out more about her book and her own experience as a first-time author.

What made you decide to write this book? Pursuant to my father’s passing, two days after Singapore’s National Day in 2014 (I expect he wanted to take his final salute at the 2014 NDP, vicariously, from his hospital bed!), I read in a Singapore Police Force publication of a historical incident whereupon my father was interviewed about his pivotal role during that incident, as well as some other similar pioneer generation police officers whose contribution to the Force, and our Nation, was exemplary. This motivated me to contact the Police Heritage Centre (PHC) and offer our family’s heirloom of 12 antique blue and white China plates circa 1700 - 1800, inherited from my great grandfather’s private collection to the PHC Museum as a tribute to my late father. The disappointing response received, followed by the domino effect created thereafter, is described in the prologue of the book to which the reader will become privy, invariably. In a positive vein, I ought to be grateful for the apathetic response from the PHC employee with whom I spoke at the material time, failing which, this book may never have materialised.

How long did it take you to write this, and were there any parts of your artistic process that you found challenging? I started on the novel in 2017 shortly after retiring from my full-time job in Hong Kong. The most challenging process was in endeavouring to dig into the abyss of my memory bank of my childhood, and more importantly, recall details from the conversations I had with my father when he was still alive. Sadly, I procrastinated recording his snippets, and the startup to write the book. The incidents could have been more accurately related in my book had I done so while he was still alive. Hence why the book is an autobiographical “novel”. I had to use a considerable amount of literary creativity to fill in the blanks when my memory failed me.

8

Are there any authors who inspire you, and were a motivation during your own creation process? “Gweilo” by Martin Booth is the principal author who inspired me. He elected to write his entire childhood; his entire growing up years in Hong Kong during its early colonial days. He did so as a platform to give his children an insight into his growing up experiences in Hong Kong as a “gweilo” (foreigner) child, whereas I wrote my book as a tribute to my parents. Sadly, Booth died of a brain tumour before his book was published.

How did you select the names of your characters? I deployed two methods; where necessary I either jumbled editions of their actual names, or I created names off the top of my head. This was necessary to protect the privacy of those still living and deceased.

What was your hardest scene to write? This would be a toss between Chapter 9 “A Brush With the Supernatural” whereupon I had to relive an extremely eerie and traumatic incident when my (then) 11 – year old brother tried to strangle me with his bare hands, whilst under a demoniacal possession - my hair kept standing on end and I was covered in goosebumps as I typed out the chapter; Chapter 19, “Should Auld Acquaintance” which relates my nanny’s marriage and departure from our household. She was leaving me, and Singapore, behind. I was overcome with guilt whilst composing this chapter as I reflected upon my feelings, or gross lack thereof, towards her. I was not as affectionate nor devoted to her, as she was to me, during the material times.

What was an early experience where you learned that language had power? Firstly, when I queried my father about my mother’s selfappointed liberty at giving away our precious toys and possessions and secondly, when I had to disengage myself out of a rather precarious situation when I was caught red-handed during an act of mischief, by the next-door kindergarten’s caretaker.

FEATURE

What is your favorite childhood book? Enid Blyton’s range of fairy, pixie, goblin, and elf children’s books.

What does literary success look like to you? In a word, “Celestial!”

Why should people purchase this book? / What do you hope readers will take away from your book? To date, I have received several five-star accolades for my book. The compliment which best jumps off the pages is “…very readable and entertaining…”; which sums up my principal intention for the reader. Notwithstanding this, there are very many incidents contained in the 19 chapters, which takes the reader back to Singapore in the 1960’s – a time long past when there were no cell phones, computers, Xbox console games and the like. One reviewer best sums up the answer to the question, “Why should people buy this Book?” Below are the reviewer’s words, not mine: “This is a delightful memoir, full of humour, shocks , and touching tales of colonial Singapore seen through the eyes of an eight-year-old girl during the 1960s . The clever, informal writing style puts the reader in mind of being at a coffee shop, listening to the author relate the tales personally. The episodes move from silly childish antics to hair-raising occasions involving the police and touching on the mystical side of Singapore life.

This is a fascinating insight into a long-gone slice of Singapore life which was visible only to those who were there at the time. Take a trip down the memory lane of someone who has been there, seen that, and done that, and enjoy the experience of a roller-coaster ride of emotions .” In the 60’s children were left to either reading books, playing with ‘high-end’ toys like Meccano, Scalextric, Doll’s Houses, etc., if they were from privileged families. If not, creating their own entertainment and amusement like playing with “kutikuti”, “chatek”, five stones, police and thieves, converting empty crates and cartons into imaginary modes of transport, spinning tops, hopscotch, and the like. There are many Millennials today, who may be able to gain a vicarious insight to life and activities in Singapore in the 1960s’, hearing of snippets from their parents and grandparents. Therefore, this Book should appeal to such Millennials, their parents, and their grandparents, which hopefully will take them all into a ‘blast from the past’.

N.A.R. Kashwin’s compelling memoir is a journey into Singapore’s multi-racial customs and cultures within a near extinct Colonial way of life that is peppered with infectious humour, and intrigue. SP O RTS NEWS

SCC BALI MEMORIAL The 12th of October is etched in our hearts. The 12th October 2021 represented the 19th anniversary of the Bali bombings which killed 202 people, including eight members of the SCC Rugby Section. Charlie Vanrenen, Chris Bradford, Chris Kays, Chris Redman, Dave Kent, Neil Bowler, Peter Record and Tim Arnold were friends and teammates whose tragic loss is remembered at sunrise on the Padang each year. Despite some additional COVID-19 considerations, the Club managed to support the traditional memorial and words from Section Convenor Henry Winter, John Leung and Club captain Murry Wylie brought both reflection and an occasional smile to those in attendance.

The 12th of October is etched in our hearts, We gather at dawn though that’s just the start, We pay our respects and remember the fallen, 19 years past - but none forgotten. Young men like us set out on a tour, The Bali tens - they were to endure, The rugby the laughs - we all can relate, The carnage that unfolded - their hapless fate. The terror now known - the atrocity named, The destruction of life’s and scars would remain, Fine young men cut down in their prime, A hole in the community - Rugby redefined. Stories we’ve heard from players past and present, Tell of the chaos and heartbreak that went, Harrowing details - panic and desperation, But it’s tales of comradery that rise through with admiration. We remember each man both near and far, Friends - families equally in our hearts, Some of those men still here in our ranks, Legends of the club - to those stalwarts we give thanks. Many in the section were not present back then, But the responsibility’s ours to commemorate these men, To each player on the pitch - who wear the black and gold jersey, It represent something far greater than rugby. Rugbys the game that brings us together, The friendship the social - when we can gather, A collective identity that binds us all, An honour - a pride with which we stand tall. Take a moment - not only today, To remember those lives that were lost that day, We’ll finish with rum and coke - equal in parts, The 12th of October is etched in SCC’s heart.

Words by Murray Wyllie, SCC Rugby Club Captain

The Section is thankful to the Club for the work that goes in to making the memorial a special day for the Section and for all those who make sure that our lost team mates really are not forgotten.

Andy Douglas, a survivor from the day back in 2002, and SCC teammates and friends got together in London to remember those who lost their lives; a true example of the enduring relationships that were forged at the SCC.

The team photo from the 2002 tour, the Bali memorial trophy, and the Section remembrance plaque stand together on the Padang for the sunrise memorial. Despite COVID-19 restrictions preventing the Singapore rugby community competing for the Bali memorial trophy this year, it serves as reminder of the way the whole rugby community comes together to represent the very best attributes of the sport.

Composed of lime and exotic tropical green fruit and ripe gooseberry nuances, the wine unfolds amidst a nose that displays blackcurrant, grapefruit and underlying flinty aromas. The palate is concentrated and enticing, coupled with the classic Isabel “Old Vine” mineral tones that make this wine refreshing and traditional in style. With its seductive creamy texture, balanced acidity and lovely persistence; the wine is delicious in its youth – or with a touch of age – and makes for a special accompaniment to many occasions and food choices.

A wine with hints of cherry and red fruits alternating with spicy and sometimes floral hints. A Barbera of excellent structure and complexity with sweet and velvety tannins of good persistence. WINE SPECTATOR 93 PTS JAMES SUCKLING 90 PTS $68.00 per bottle / $15.50 per glass

Wine

Convenor: Naveen Gupta | Article by: Naveen Gupta

The Wine Circle remains consistent in organising the monthly events and promotions for their Members - albeit many of them now going virtual.

RED AND WHITE EVENT For August, it was the Red and White event to celebrate the Singapore National Day. The Wine Circle Members were offered two glasses of house pour wines complimentary on two successive Fridays. While the first Friday was a buy one, get one free offer, the next one it was straight two free drinks. Many Members were seen enjoying their complimentary drinks. The total value delivered to the Members was around SGD 35 through this celebration.

“CHALLENGING THE CLASSICS” VIRTUAL EVENT For September, the Wine Circle organised a virtual event for its members titled ‘Challenging the Classics’. Most wine lovers remain confined to the well-known French regions of Bordeaux and Burgund. At the event, the presenter Maria Kropyvianska, holder of a WSET Level 3 award, shared several wines which were as good as their better known cousins, but much lighter on the pocket. Maria, who grew up in Spain, shared that she has drunk wine each day of her life since she was 14 except for the nine months of her pregnancy. She made the virtual blind tasting event extremely eventful with the use of Zoom breakout rooms. One could witness some animated discussions & debates about the aroma and flavours of the wines that the attendees had just tasted. Each Member was home delivered six tasting sample bottles of wine (each with 90ml and with Argon pumped in) along with a cheese hamper. The total value of the package was around SGD 70 which was made available to the Members at a price of just SGD 20!

WINE CIRCLE LAPEL PIN To create a distinct brand identity for the Wine Circle, the Committee has got designed lapel pins and each Member is being offered one pin complimentary. If you too wish to strut around the club getting some envious looks from fellow Members, please do reach out to Ms. Cassie Wong to join the Wine Circle!

M E M B ER ENGAG EMENT

SCC Used Clothes Donation Drive 2 October 2021

The Team, elated (and exhausted) over our hard work and success as a group.

As an international school student who has been actively involved in service, the gratitude that comes with giving back never grows old. Over the course of my tenure as a member of the Singapore Cricket Club community, I’ve been privileged to participate in various service opportunities, via the SCC community outreach program. The prep for this event started weeks before. I remember waking up one morning, and staring at my reflection in the mirror, only to find that I had grown an inch taller. My growth spurt left me with a closet full of clothes that didn’t fit, and no clue what to do with them. Luckily for me, earlier that week I heard from my parents that SCC was organizing a clothes donation drive, so I decided to make use of the spare clothes and contribute them to a good cause. I spent the next few days reaching out to my friends and family, seeking their contribution towards this cause.

Most importantly, this experience was a perpetual reminder of how easy it is to make a positive difference, through means as simple as donating a few spare clothes when you hit a growth spurt. With this in mind, I encourage fellow teenagers to leap at service opportunities whenever they pop up. Go Team SCC! (Written by Siddh Narayan Sharma, Grade 10 student of Canadian International School, Singapore)

“Thank you for your help, young man,” was the first thing I heard as I walked into the Club, boxes full of clothes in-hand. After being directed to the squash court foyer, and depositing my boxes at the foot of a gargantuan pile of clothes, I was introduced to Ms. Cassie Wong, the Head of Events, Sponsorship and Member Relations at SCC, who assigned me a post as one of the “heavy-lifters.” As volunteers piled in, our team truly began to take shape, as we gathered, distributed, and organized hundreds of boxes like a welloiled machine. Though the lifting was tough, we worked together as a unit, motivating each other and staying driven to the task at hand. We bonded over our shared passion for giving back to the community and exchanged witty anecdotes about our past experiences volunteering at the Club. SCC Cycling Session to Sentosa 4 September 2021

Sentosa Cove and W Hotel with a break at Quayside Isle for coffee and a magnificent morning view of the Marina. Soon we had regrouped – with Fatimah and Cassie rounding up the rest – and the various break-away groups recounted their different experiences reaching there. Cassie related her collapsing seat ride; Zoher decided to be the rescuing Mechanic only to rip it further, leaving poor Cassie with an unstable bicycle! But then it was time for scenic photos, and that task was duly completed. Next was to proceed to the beach strip. Zoher took the lead, leading up a long uphill ride only to reach Sentosa Golf Club; this led to a mandatory u-turn and downhill thrill ride to the amazement of those still on the way up!

It was 4 September, the first Saturday of the month: ride-day for the highly anticipated SCC Cycling Club’s “Ride to SENTOSA” promoted by our cycling enthusiast-in-chief Fatimah. Cassie, our ever-efficient organiser-in-chief, had touched base with the heavenly lords and a rain check at 6am on the cards was not necessary - maybe it was the onion and chilli trick!! So it was a lovely Saturday morning when the early birds checked in at the SCC carpark, catching the first rays of sunlight. By 7am, 12 earnest cyclists were all geared for the start. Flag-off was a little delayed- the President turned up in his full cycling gear to the shouts of “Breakfast on you!” Soon, 12 eager enthusiastic cyclists set off towards Sentosa. As the cyclists spread out along Fullerton Road and Collyer Quay, it settled into obvious groups - there were the racers of 5 (oblivious to what’s behind) and relaxed mid-group of 3 and 2 sweepers pedaling at different paces along Shenton Way, Keppel Road (under the viaduct) towards Sentosa Gateway. Crossing the bridge to a resort island felt good, as though we were going overseas - missed for a long time! The first unofficial stop was at the end of the extended Gateway Bridge when the runaway front runners realised the team leaders were left well behind. Initiative “Regroup at Sentosa Cove” message was conveyed on the chat. Next was a few gasping uphill and exhilarating downhill rides which took quite a toll on most of us. It was a rewarding ride through

26

We finally found the correct route to the Palawan and Siloso beach strips. Meanwhile Cassie, struggling with her bicycle, decided to head back with Marianne for company- a good move to be front runners! At the end of the beach strip at Shangri-lah Rasa Sentosa, the main group proceeded along Siloso road back to the Gateway. Then it was along Keppel Road and Robinson Road, through the heart of the financial centre in daunting road traffic catching up with the front runners, and back to SCC. All 12 accounted for, safe and sound! To round it up: a rewarding breakfast at SCC. Truly it was a morning well spent! Written by Srini Srinivasan

SCC Nature Trail Walk – to Fort Canning Park 25 September 2021

Our Nature Walking Group had a change of scene, shifting from nature parks in the farthest corners of Singapore, to an urban locale in the vicinity of SCC. A strong turnout with 11 Members ( + one canine), gathered in high spirits at the Clubhouse entrance on the cool and slightly overcast morning of 25 September. Beginning from the SCC itself and walking in groups of two with 1m safe distancing, we soaked in the rich historical urban landscape surrounding the Padang on the way to Fort Canning. Starting at the Gothic Gates near the Christian Cemetery, many more beautiful sights of colonial architecture awaited us as we explored the sites along the perimeter route. Among the interesting structures we saw were the Fort Gate, Nine Pound Cannon, Raffles House and Terrace, and the Fort Canning Hill Lighthouse replica. The hill boasts a rich history which goes back to the 14th century as the abode and resting place of the local Malay kings. Fort Canning was known as Bukit Larangan (Forbidden Hill) and we saw the Karamat (shrine) – a tomb believed to contain the remains of the fifth and last Malay king, Sri Sultan Iskandar Shah. Having completed the main walking routes, we walked downslope on the spice garden trail. It was fun trying to identify the variety of plants, fruits and spices we encountered such as nutmegs, black pepper, cardamoms, cloves, turmeric, cinnamon, ginger, lime and mint. On our homebound journey, we walked along the Singapore River, a route filled with the sights and symbols of old and new Singapore, and were eventually back at the cozy Clubhouse of SCC. We covered about 5.5 km and it was a wonderful way to spend a leisurely Saturday morning. (Written by Ramesh I Shahdadpuri)

SCC Running & Brisk Walking Club

Join us y, 6pm. every Monda t: Meeting poin Padang Field

The Club has done an excellent job to get Members to exercise. An evening walk with other Members of the club has its own charm. Walking in the evening while the sun sets around the Marina Bay area, one experiences so many different views of this part of Singapore. It has glitzy skyscrapers and unique architectural buildings. As we walk along, the sun slowly descends, casting shadows on the buildings and water and providing great photo opportunities, while cyclists and joggers all enjoy the beauty of this location. With the business day ending, you see office workers hurrying home or just chilling at the waterfront in one of the many al fresco restaurants and bars. As we walk along, we come upon pockets of naturallooking man-made streams, little hidden gems of greenery that makes one feel totally at peace as the breeze blows gently and birds chirp away as they get ready to settle in for the night . We make our way back to the Club and as we approach it, nightfall has descended and we get to see the majestic Victoria Theatre lit up. Ending our walk at the Club and gazing upon in appreciation of its beauty and old world charm is the perfect end to a Monday walk. (Written by SCC Member Ravinder Kaur)

SEPTEMBER IN-HOUSE GAMES 2021. The in-house games were held on 4 and 16 September. Jag Singh was the overall winner with 655 points, followed by Philip Ng with a score of 633. Tony Fisher received the mini Chivas with a score of 472. Everyone had a roaring good time during both the September games.

OCTOBER IN-HOUSE GAMES 2021 Unfortunately, the in-house games for October had to be cancelled because of the rise in COVID-19 cases. The Balut Section Committee voted to cancel the games because of health concerns for the Section Members. We hope all will have a safe and happy holiday season!

Bowls

NATIONAL PAIRS 2021 The curtains for the National Pairs have finally closed. The men’s tussle for top honours was always going to be a tight one with an all-SCC semi-finals. Each pair would have fancied themselves and it was down to who brought their “A” game on that day. The draw pitted long-time partners Edmund and Ganesh against Zoher and Srini. The latter got off to a start they dreamed off, with both players peppering the jack and running off to a good lead. A mid-game slump allowed their opponents into the game and some inspired bowling by Edmund and Ganesh in the last four ends saw them overturn the game and snag a spot in the finals with a 17-15 win. The other match saw Christian and Melvin against Bob and Atiff, who pipped current title holders Anthony and Thomas in the quarter-finals. Christian and Melvin raced to a 11-1 lead before Bob and Atiff staged an inspiring come back to close the deficit to 7-11. Holding three good shots in the head on the tenth end, they gazed at the potential to take the score to 10-11. But with no other shot to play but drive, Christian made a good connection with his last bowl to spring the jack into the ditch and come away with four shots to lead 15-7. From then on, they consolidated their lead and ran away with a 23-9 win. Inclement weather delayed the finals by three hours. That however did not affect the quality of the game as both teams put on a classy encounter with mastery shot-making to the delight of spectators who stayed on. Both leads peppered the jack and the skips were on hand when called upon. The score remained close throughout, with Edmund and Ganesh holding a slender one-shot lead going into the penultimate end. However, a loose end saw them drop four shots and eventually the match went 16-21 to Christian and Melvin, who took home their fourth National Pairs title under the floodlights. The hope for an all-SCC ladies final remained alive as both teams were drawn in separate semi-finals. Section stalwarts Mary and Rosemary had to contend with Josephine and Margaret from ELBC for a spot in the finals. They needed an extra end to beat their opponents after letting their huge lead dissipate in the second half of the game, and were visibly relieved to see Josephine’s last bowl fall short of the jack. Current SEA Games gold medalists Shermeen and Amira got off to a slow start against ELBC’s Li Li and Siok Chin but managed to find their groove to avenge their defeat in the group stages by 26-9. A fairytale all-SCC final ensued. Nothing separated the teams in the first half of the match. Amira was in red hot form leading

up front, but Rosemary and Mary had the answers to keep the score tight. Alas, the former Asia Bowls pairs champions dropped a costly four on the 12th end and were unable to recover, handing the title to Shermeen and Amira 10-19. Despite the interruptions, the tournament was a fruitful, record breaking outing for SCC. We hosted the tournament, sent out the most entries ever and medalled in six out of eight available spots. Bravo SCC!

An all-SCC affair at the Bowls National Pairs 2021 finals.

Darts

Convenor: Helen Campos | Article by: Fahmida Huned

As we continue on the roller coaster ride reading daily advisories on rising cases and over-stretched health facilities, we struggle to remain upbeat. Our Club remains a haven during this time for Members to meet in relative safety. The Darts Section Committee has been actively trying to get our Section nights going whenever it has been safe and prudent to do so (subject to government rules) on second Monday of each month. We will add a second session each month to accommodate groups of 10. The Annual Pot Games is a major sporting event in the calendar, with the Tanglin Club as the hosts this year. However due to the latest government restrictions, this event has been postponed. The Section has also given out a $40 F&B voucher to all who attend the monthly darts sessions which they hold under strict adherence to social distancing measures. Those who attend get a $20 F&B voucher per session limited to two sessions per Darts Member (total entitlement therefore is $40 each Member). For those who have not taken advantage of this are encouraged to do so as and when the games are held. The Darts Section Committee will be refunding up to one year’s Section subs by way of F&B vouchers. It is hoped that you will continue to support the Section through this difficult time as we deal with the fallout from the pandemic. Every year end, the Darts Section has a great sell-out Christmas party; this year we cannot organise such a gathering but do look out for news on a possible virtual event for all Section Members, their families and friends. Good news ahead and we hope to end off the year with a positive note. Please look out for further announcements in our WhatsApp group. Stay safe and hope to see you soon at the Club. On behalf of Darts Section Committee, we wish everyone a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!!!

SCC VIRTUAL RUN/WALK RESULTS Results for the inaugural SCC Olympic Virtual Run & Walk 2021 have been announced and the Football Section is proud to mention that we have won seven podium awards! Firstly, we are very proud of ALLof our fellow Section Members who have taken the time and effort to participate despite their busy schedules. Overall as a Section, we won Runner-Up in the Intersection Longest Run with a total of 212.82km and also Runner-Up in the Intersection Longest Walk with a total of 264.6km! Ian Collins was the 2nd Runner-Up for the Men’s Masters Longest Walk with a total of 123.2km. But these exemplary individuals have won themselves not only prizes and F&B credits from the Club, but also for our Section the bragging rights for having the two fastest men and women in the club!

Men’s Open 6km: • Champion: Maximillan Rolf (20:10min) • Runner-Up: Charles Stark (21:35min)

Women’s Open 6km: • Champion: Charlene Teo (31:43min) • Runner-Up: Lina Lee (33:12min)

SCC FOOTBALL WOMEN’S DEVELOPMENT TEAM The Women’s NFL football league that was slated to have taken place in June, has been put on indefinite hold. However, that has not dampened the spirits of the SCC ladies who have been faithfully training weekly at the Padang, rain or shine. While zone restrictions continue to be in place with five persons per group, the ladies have been working hard on mastering their technique, passing and moving effectively into space. Additionally, they have been steadily building physical fitness with sprints and conditioning exercises every week. Off-field, the team has been enjoying getting to know each other better over post-training sessions at STUMPS while overlooking the majestic view of the Padang. The team is continuing to see new faces joining in every other week and we look forward to a growing community of women who love football socially and competitively.

Hockey

Convenor: Subhas Nathan | Article by: Kanan Packrisamy

THE HOCKEY SCCHOOL OFF AND RUNNING The Hockey Section is proud to announce that it will soon officially launch its much-awaited academy, The Hockey SCChool. In the meantime, we have started the training sessions as an appropriate window opened up. On Tuesday, 31 August 2021, The Hockey SCChool started with 24 kids on the hallowed lawns of the Padang - a momentous occasion as this day had been in the making over the last few years; all the minor details had finally been nailed down and we are now off and running. The Hockey SCChool caters to kids aged five and above and will take in kids of any age as long as they want to learn and be great at the sport of hockey. However, we would like to state that kids who are competent will graduate to become SCC Junior Sports Members (JSM) when they qualify at the age of 13. We nonetheless will continue to allow kids who are 13 years old to train with The Hockey SCChool if they want to enhance their hockey prowess outside of the larger competitive team structure. It is noteworthy that our former club President, Sher Baljit Singh, took special interest in getting The Hockey SCChool started, but pitch unavailability due to F1 and the National Day Parades and other national-level events kept making it hard, and then came COVID-19 restrictions. We have braved all these storms and obstacles and with the help of our current Deputy President Mathavan Devadas, who was also the hockey convenor who first mooted the idea of the academy together with our long-standing coach Kanan Packrisamy. The keen efforts of yet another former convenor Intekhab Khan, who played a telling part in putting together all the pieces, and our current convenor Subhas Nathan helped to pave the way to our eventual start. The Hockey Section would be doing a proper official launch of The Hockey SCChool, of course adhering to COVID-19 safe management measures, in the near future. In the meantime, The Hockey SCChool boasts two kids of two Section Members, two more from Club Members, and 15 nonmember kids who eventually will become Hockey Section JSMs. In time, we are looking to recruit more Section and Club Member kids who have made enquires. Additionally, we have plenty of interest from non-members which is a healthy problem as we continue to try to tame COVID-19 related disruptions, which is a beast in its own right and grow our Section numbers. On the topic of taming and in line with the start of our own academy, the Section incepted “The Hockey SCChool Sports Education Series”. The first of the series was an awe-inspiring umpiring

36

course run under strict adherence to COVID-19 Safe Management Measures on Saturday, 18 September 2021. The one-day course was expertly presented by two-time Olympic Games umpire Lim Hong Zhen at our very own Gilmour Room. You will be happy to learn that all 10 Section Members who attended passed the course and can now embark on an exciting umpiring career if they wish to. With COVID-19 continuing to dominate what we can and cannot do, the Section has managed to keep attendance at training at a decent average of 12 Members per session. We have had to stop our Astroturf sessions at Sengkang due to further reduction in allowed group size. We will resume that once we can go back to in the least five per group. Our Monday and Wednesday sessions on the Padang at 5.45pm to 7pm continue unabated.

Rugby

Convenor: Henry Winter | Scribe: Christopher Ellis

RUGBY SECTION PIVOTS Since the Section’s establishment in 1902 (see Padang January/ February 2021 issue) the SSC Rugby Section has actively discriminated against those who cannot, or do not, wish to play rugby. This relentless pursuit of rugby excellent has led to multiple regional successes, a large number of internationally recognized players and a dynamic mini-rugby section to provide the foundation for future success. However, little opportunity has been given to those who want to try other sports. But they say necessity is the mother of invention, and with Singapore rugby’s extended furlough, the Section has worked hard to provide the opportunities that so many Section Members were clearly looking for. Taking inspiration from a number of prominent successful (and unsuccessful) business pivots, the Section has supported Members across a wide range of non-rugby activities including but not limited to cycling, bowls, running, walking, modeling, punditry, golf, competitive quizzing and even the establishment of a formal dining club. While the country does look to be slowly opening up, discussions between Henry Winter and PM Lee have stalled and it appears the resumption of rugby is not high up on the MTF agenda at the moment. It looks like Section Members will be able to continue pursuing their new activities into 2022.

Bryan Lim and Mick Newman were both involved in a heated transfer saga that saw the Bowls Section reluctantly accepting them if they promised to avoid involving themselves in the actual sport.

From left, clockwise: • Despite shunning lycra, Harresh, Bryan and Shandy have had a big impact on the nascent SCC Cycling Club. • Plus size models Patrick Wheen and Harresh Krishnan enjoyed the chance to work with Rolls Royce to help them market their new Cullinan. Great to see big car brands embracing men with real bodies rather than the hard-to-achieve stereotype so often seen on the section review. • Convenor Henry Winter takes credit for Rob Vasler’s incredible 181.04km run during the SCC inaugural virtual run. Although the Club may consider them novelty categories, the Rugby Section certainly didn’t and looked to assert Section dominance by thoroughly routing the other teams. Plans to dominate the Women’s longest walk next year are already being discussed.

NEW INITIATIVE SESSIONS Social distancing measures have compelled the SCC Squash Section to think of different ways to get good squash games, whilst staying responsible and safe. To that end, from 8 September, the Section started having 3-hour sessions on Wednesday nights, Thursday nights and Sunday mornings where some of our A-graded players would turn up during stipulated time slots to spar or do drills with other SCC squash players. All Squash Section Members were welcomed to attend these sessions, whether complete beginners, or pros themselves! The sessions were intended to run till 2 October 2021 and were extremely popular from inception. However, the sessions had to be cut short before the end of their full run due to tightened social distancing measures in late September.

FRIENDLY MATCHES WITH SINGAPORE NATIONAL SQUASH TEAM Back in late August, SCC held a friendly match at the Club with the junior squash players of the Singapore National Squash Team. Players from both sides had a wonderful time and Yap Kok Four, the Singapore National Head Coach, had this to say:

“SSRA would like to thank SCC for arranging this friendly match with our juniors. The players had a good time playing with the Members and had a good experience playing with different court conditions. We will be looking forward to having another friendly match again soon. Once again, thank you very much for having us in such a wonderful Club.” In the final reckoning, SCC had lost six out of the total eight matches in the friendly, though a couple of matches were fivesetters that could have gone either way. We were pleased to host the junior national team members at SCC and hope to invite them back to the Club in the future.
