PRESIDENT ’S MESSAGE
Dear Members, We are currently four months into the current General Committee (GC) term and slightly over the half-way mark with regards to the financial year 2021. Despite the Phase 2 Heightened Alerts (P2HA) from 16 May to 9 August resulting in the Club having to close all dine-in operations for some weeks during these months, we were able to continue with our Takeaway service and also operate some of our sports facilities, the latter albeit under restricted conditions. The Club closure was outside our control and was a necessary step in the nation’s collective fight against a resurgent COVID-19. The GC is in full empathy with Members being unable to use much of the Club during the above periods of Heightened Alert. In light of the limited access to the Club over the past 10 weeks, Members have been informed that their Minimum Spend Levy for the quarters that include June, July and August will be automatically rolled over into the immediate next quarter. Members who have previously been charged the Minimum Spend Levy will have the charge reversed in their next statement. In the recent P2HA, the Club had to close its pivoted F&B operations in the Main Lounge and the Stumps Bar until 18 August. At this point in writing, they are still closed as the government is exercising greater scrutiny in its review of all pivot licence applications. We are strenuously working with the authorities to reopen the recently closed pivoted facilities and additionally seeking a Pivot Licence for the Deli Bar. Alternate F&B service at Gilmour Terrace and Gilmour Room have been opened to Members to relax at from late afternoon onwards, while enjoying the same lovely views of Padang field and the Civic District. Operational hours at The Padang Restaurant and Padang Foyer have also been extended to increase our F&B dine-in capacity for Members. In case you have not visited the Club recently, in late July, the Club introduced a substantially revamped Wine List with 88 new labels (9 Sparkling, 4 Rose, 31 White and 44 Reds). One enthusiastic and respected member of the Wine Circle commented “I Am very impressed with the choice of varieties and price points offered”. Kudos to the F&B Subcommittee, the F&B department and the Operations team for putting it together. Our F&B outlets will also be introducing new tantalising culinary treats and promotions just for your enjoyment, including a special Oktoberfest menu. While most sport competitions were at a standstill, the Club did manage to complete the SCC Singles Bowls Competition. The event attracted a record number of entries (35) with 15 players playing in this tournament for the first time, a testament to the growing popularity of the sport amongst our Members. At the recently concluded Bowls Singapore National Pairs Competition, it was an all-SCC final with Christian Huang and Melvin Tan winning the Men’s event. The Ladies’ final had to be
postponed due to inclement weather and it will also be an all-SCC final. Well done the Lawn Bowls Section. Meanwhile, our Tennis players were victorious won the STA Men’s B Interclub Knockout Doubles, while our Ladies A very narrowly lose their finals match. Great work all around from Team SCC! While the pandemic has caused major disruptions to our daily lives, it has not stopped the General Committee and our highly dedicated staff from innovating and finding new events for Members to continue interacting with one another. Our recent activities for Members such as the inaugural SCC Olympic Virtual Run & Walk 2021 organised by the Sports Department was very well-received and it was heartening to see Members enthusiastically participating, albeit “virtually”. While there were some very impressive times recorded for the 6km run by our younger members, of special note are the distances recorded in the Men’s Longest Walk Category by Peter ‘Stitch’ Hutton (255km) and Suyash Sachin Kanthale (250km) walking almost 18km daily over the fortnight of the competition. The SCC Photo Competition also revealed many budding photographers in our midst and online voting for the best photo submission was almost frenzied. Members can view the stunning submissions on the SCC Facebook page. Do continue participating in the many events and activities we have organised for you this September and October – there are interesting tours and workshops, sports camps and also exploratory activities for you to try out such as basketball and dragon boat racing. Member’s feedback is invaluable in the Club’s efforts to achieve F&B offerings and curating events that match Members’ expectations. Please do not hesitate to share with us your comments and suggestions as to how the Club will be better able to match your expectations as these may well benefit the larger Membership too. Of interest to all Members will be the Lease Renewal which is due in September 2026. A Lease Renewal Subcommittee of the General Committee has been formed to start the process of gathering information relating our current lease and also to have a preliminary review of development possibilities at the time of the lease renewal. In this regard, we have had email exchanges with the Singapore Land Authority (SLA) who have been very helpful in attending to our queries. We will keep Members informed as more information becomes available. In the meanwhile, stay safe and in good health and I look forward to seeing you at the Club. We hope there will be fewer such disruptions going forward and Members can uninterruptedly continue to enjoy the Club.

THE PADANG SEP / OCT 2021
S P ORTS NEWS
With fresh heightened measures announced in mid-May this year, the morale in the Lions’ den was low. Football seemed like a distant memory and the hopes of lacing those cleats up again for a run out on the glorious Padang were dashed. Players regaled one another with stories of their (supposed) speed, flicks and tricks from days gone by. However, the memories were losing their ability to refresh and rejoice the players but were instead bringing about a sense of wistfulness. Sensing that something needed to be done, up stepped our ever-reliable captain Rob Gulston and his predecessor Jeremy Lim. Mooting a challenge of covering a total distance of at least 1,680km in a month, the equivalent of 10 rounds around Singapore, the captains piqued the interest of a pride of Lions. The captains reminded the team that true friends were never apart, maybe in distance but never in heart. Together with some old friends from St Patrick’s School (the Class Of ‘93) the Lions set out to take part in the Round Singapore Challenge to run a cumulative total of at least 1,680 km in a month from 25 May to 23 June 2021. Each member would run on their own or in pairs but log their distances online towards the shared target. To reach this goal, each runner committed to running distances of between 25km to 180km in the month; this being another tactical master stroke by the captains, reminding everyone just why they were picked to lead the team. The targets gave the team added motivation to get out of their homes and on their feet as they explored various parts of Singapore.
With the team already chomping at the bits to get started as the 25th of May drew closer, the captains had another trick up their sleeves. With the aid of another Member, the captains thought it would also be a good chance to raise some money for a good cause. This again was well-received, with the team on the verge of belting out “It’s coming home” with Rob’s leadership reminiscent of Bobby Moore. The charity that was chosen for the challenge was Beautiful People, an organisation that befriends and mentors children and teenagers who have often been unfairly labelled or written off by society. Some Members agreed to raise or donate $1 for every km that they had committed to run. The team also did their bit for their supporters by asking donors to consider running, jogging or walking a distance equivalent to their donations in order to stay active while giving back. As responsible members of the community, they reminded their donors to do any running, jogging or walking safely and in accordance with the prevailing COVID-19 regulations. The challenge was a roaring success with everyone having fun while keeping fit and giving back. The team clocked a total of 6,022.33km amongst themselves and there were also some astonishing individual distances covered with Whibs covering 445km in the month! Our captains each clocked 205km and 168km, covering their own rounds around Singapore in the process. In total, the Lions raised $6,755 for Beautiful People who expressed their gratitude and appreciation for the contribution. With this success, the Lions are back on the prowl and ready for their next challenge, which many are hopeful will be on the Padang.

Throwback to SCC Night Race
A fixture in the SCC Calendar since 2008, the SCC Night Race was always one adrenaline-pumping weekend of racing action for Members and guests to watch the Formula 1 Singapore Airlines Singapore Grand Prix while enjoying extensive buffet spreads and fully stocked bars. Fringe activities such as our stilt walkers, roving entertainers, competitions between adults and kids alike in the race car stimulator, were always popular, while our SCC Lion mascot also regularly made appearances and mingled amongst the crowd. Meanwhile, the SCC Public Bar would consistently be crowded on the Padang as it served members of the public. The highlight of the yearly event would the spectacular fireworks display that would mark the end of the race, while spectators continued to enjoy live entertainment by world renowned artists on Padang field. The global COVID-19 pandemic changed events drastically. But even as we look forward to organising and hosting Members and guests at the SCC Night Race again hopefully in the very near future, here’s a throwback to the many event editions over the past ten years.

The delicate red color of this wine provides dark purple tints. The nose, with the delicacy of little fresh red fruits such as red currant and strawberry, delights by its harmony. The tasting goes on with a soft and fruity mouth, where tannins, still there, progressively fade, leaving in the mouth a well-fruity balance.
Lovely pale golden colour with a little hint of green. The expressive nose offers intense aromas of exotic and white flowers that begin with a refreshing mouth that reveals an ample and harmonious flesh. Slightly lemony reach a pleasantly tasting in final.
$48.00 per bottle / $12.80 per glass
Kono Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc, New Zealand A brilliant pale green that has a vibrant fruit driven nose bursting with citrus fruits and passionfruit. Luscious fruit flavours of ripe tropical fruits and lifted herbaceous notes are finely balanced with zesty acidity, an underlying minerality with a hint of residual sweetness. Juicy, crisp and fresh, this wine leads to a long and dry, persistent finish.
$48.00 per bottle / $12.80 per glass
Bodegas Garzon Tannat Merlot, Uruguay Deep purple in colour, this Tannat has fresh aromas reminiscent of red and black fruits such as plums and raspberries on a spice-flavoured aroma. 11 JUNE 2021 - VIRTUAL WINE TASTING EVENT After putting on a few very successful in-person wine tasting events, the Wine Circle was forced by the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic to go online for its event in June. But never mind, we soldier on like everyone else. Nothing comes between us and our wine! On 11 June 2021, the Wine Circle hosted a virtual wine tasting event with Australian boutique winemaker Petersons Wines, conducted by the amazing Joe Keats, a Singapore-based New Zealand-born sommelier with over 25 years’ experience in Australia, Scotland, Belgium, Canada, Russia and of course Singapore. Petersons wines are shipped all over the world but are only sold directly from the producer to customers, so this was a wonderful opportunity to try them. To accommodate our virtual tasting, the wines were decanted into smaller tasting bottles and delivered to the homes of all participants on the day of the tasting, together with a lovely cheese platter to cleanse our palates. The event was a smashing success, sold out very quickly and received rave reviews by all who participated. Although Petersons is known for its big and bold red wines, the tasting highlighted three bottles each of both whites and reds. We started off with a 2019 Arneis, a lovely white with hues of gold and yellow straw, a bouquet of pear and quince with talc and fresh green herbs, and hints of musk, toast and honey. This was followed by a 2019 Viognier, another white with a more floral aroma and a rich and textured palate which would go well with spicy dishes. The final white of the evening was a non-vintage Cuvee Chardonnay, a very drinkable wine with a bouquet of ripened fruit, crushed nuts and cookie dough, with just a hint of cheese. Juicy on the palate, this wine was fruity but very clean with a dry finish. It left us all wishing we had a full-sized bottle! Turning to the reds, we led off with a 2017 Shiraz Cabernet, perfect with barbeque or steak but also delightful on its own, with a satisfying palate of boysenberry and blackberry upfront, a savory herbal middle and a soft dry finish which lingers on the palate. Although this was a hard act to follow, it just got better from there. Next was a 2018 Armidale Shiraz, with a rich, dark purple hue, a powerful spice and fruit bouquet with a hint of pencil shavings, and a palate of dark fruit and pepper with hints of vanilla, cinnamon and plum – the favorite of many participants. Finally, the night ended with a huge 2012 Barossa Valley Cabernet, a veritable work of art with a deep blackcurrant color, and a floral aroma with cassis, lavender and mint, and a rich palate of blackberries, cloves, cinnamon and vanilla. A real showstopper! Throughout the evening, Joe provided running commentary with fascinating (and often humorous) information about the wines and winemaking in Australia. Some participants were surprised to learn just how good Australian wines could be! We all learned a great deal and really enjoyed the evening, despite being locked in our homes. After attending the session, many participants requested that we hold additional virtual wine tasting events if we are not able to meet in person. Messaged received! The cost of the wine tasting was $20 for Wine Circle Members and $40 for other SCC Members, inclusive of six wines, the cheese platters and delivery, thus offering tremendous value to the Wine Circle Members. The Wine Circle Committee is making significant efforts and hopes to attract more SCC members to join in for such fun and educational evenings, and of course for some excellent wine! SCC TENNIS ACADEMY The SCC Tennis Academy operates daily from the Singapore Cricket Club which – with its artificial grass, grass, and hard courts - is one of the rare places tennis players in Singapore can experience a wide array of courts. Offering both kids and adult lessons, the academy caters to players of all ages and skill-levels with its professional and highly-experienced team of coaches.
CULTIVATING KIDS IN TENNIS We offer a range of group lessons fit for every skill level, headed by our top coaches Juan Ortiz and Jerome Ong. Juan is a passionate USPTA Tennis Professional with over 13 years of experience helping students of all ages achieve their potential through innovative program design and delivery, while Jerome is an accredited tennis instructor with years of coaching and competition experience in Singapore. Students begin at the lowest level, or youngest age, in the Red Ball Group with activities focused on developing racket handling, stroke fundamentals, hand-eye coordination and basic footwork. Courts and balls are adjusted to their level as the child learns better court positioning, sound grips, tactical awareness, and strategies in comparison to practice on an improper sized court with a higher bouncing ball. Orange Ball is the next stage, designed to teach players the different grips, stances, and basic spins associated with each particular stroke. This allows them to develop their own style while they delve into more advanced footwork, singles and doubles match play, and basic strategies. The kids then advance to Green Ball, with activities designed to continue the development of proper technique, consistency, anticipation skills, and shot selection - preparing players for competitive rallies and team tennis. This introduces players to more competitive match play and is the last step before Pre-Academy. Pre Academy is for top individuals who are selected by our head coaches to undergo higher level training. Activities are designed around full stroke development, the use of different spins to improve shot selection, advanced footwork, developing individual strengths, recognizing opponent’s weaknesses, and anticipating shots - all of which can then be applied into tournament settings.

ADULTS TRAINING The SCC Tennis Academy also offers training to adults, ranging from beginner level to intermediate and advanced levels as well as academy level teenagers. With coaching headed by our directors Michel and Christo, trainees are greeted immediately by high level trainers: Michel Van Den Sanden has over 20 years of coaching experience and is a former WTA Tour coach, working with former WTA number 1 player Vera Zvonareva. As a former rank number 9 in the world for over-50, his decades of experience in tennis helps him provide you with professional insight on technical and strategic improvements which can have an immediate impact on your game. Christo Weise has had over 10 years of experience coaching high level players in Singapore, with previous students winning SPEX and overseas tournaments. He has been a head coach at the Pacific Club in Hong Kong, at UWCD Singapore, and is now the Tennis Director at the Singapore Cricket Club - allowing him to interact with all our players and provide advice to bring them to a new level. SCC’s adult and academy training are split into different groups to allow for players to play with people of the same level. Adult classes are split into two, with adult beginner/intermediate classes focusing on weekly drills that include footwork, correcting grips, strokes, and rallying. The primary focus of these classes is to build up your basic tennis skills, which will let you play points and matches. We also provide a Cardio Group which acts as an Advanced Tennis Class. Our coaches combine a variety of cardio workouts and a range of fun and advanced tennis drills and these sessions include high-intensity drills as well as singles and doubles match-play scenarios to allow for more advanced players to fully display their abilities. For trainees who are tournament level, we provide ATP level coaching in our academy classes to ensure tournament readiness and the ability to practise with similarly leveled opponents. With all trainees being of a high level, classes consist of mental and physical training, including drilling with a focus on technique to ensure that trainees develop with the help and advice of our highly experienced coaches. Lessons are capped off with matchplay and points, where different strategies and techniques can then be applied in order for them to be applicable in real match situations.

Unfortunately due to COVID-19 restrictions, no games were held in May and June.
JULY IN-HOUSE GAMES 2021 With the lifting of the enhanced safe management measures, the Balut Section was able to organize in-house games in July. The games were held on the 10th and 13th of July respectively. However due to regulations, only two Section Members per table were allowed. This didn’t prevent the Section Members from having a great time! Prema Sajnani was the top scorer with a total of 636 points. Following a close second was Jag Singh with a total of 632 points. Yeo Foo Yong, with a score of 480, had the lowest aggregate.
AUGUST IN-HOUSE GAMES 2021 With the easing of restrictions, the Balut Section was able to hold one in-house game on the 14th of August. A N Balagopal had the top score of 637, followed by Else Stokkmo with 630points. Mageswari Veluppillai had the lowest score with 474 points.

A 133-DAY SCC SINGLES! After two suspensions due to the heightened alert, we finally completed the SCC Singles in mid-August. The men’s semi-finals matches saw Edmund see off Alan 21-17, and Christian tipping his National Pairs partner 21-19 in a titanic tussle. Reigning champion Edmund faced Christian in a rain-interrupted final. Christian raced to a 6-1 lead before lightning forced the players off the green. The momentum shifted after the restart as Edmund came roaring back to level the scores. The tie remained closed with Edmund leading for the first time at 19-18, but a loose end saw Christian claim three to take home the McKean Cup for the first time. In the plate final, Damian saw off Bryan 21-15 after some spirited bowling from both players. The ladies final saw pitted Amira against Shermeen after they accounted for Lisa and Ming Li respectively in the semi-finals. Shermeen got off to a great start with a 10-1 lead after five ends but Amira was not ready to throw in the towel just yet as she battled back to claim the WA Rose Bowl 21-13.
NATIONAL PAIRS 2021 It was a glorious day for our SCC men as four out of our five quarter-finalists swept their way into the semi-finals. The biggest upset of the day was undoubtly Bob and Atiff’s win over current
holders Anthony and Thomas. It was 13-all going into the last end with their opponents seemingly onto a successive semi-final after holding shot with a front toucher. But skip Bob Gattie had the last say with a wonder bowl to crack an egg and push the jack back to their own bowls to claim the match and a spot in the semi-final. Srini and Zoher were staring at a four down against Law and Kah Hock on the last end and a potential sudden death but Zoher’s last bowl turned all anxiety turn into elation as they claimed another one of the semi-final spots. Ganesh and Edmund made light work of John and Bob earlier while the all-SCC match saw Melvin and Christian beat Mike D and KC. Great work guys!
Singapore Pairs League winners.
SINGAPORE PAIRS LEAGUE The short return to Bowls allowed for the inaugural Singapore Pairs League to be completed with SCC A comprising of Shermeen, Amira, Ming Li and Melvin crowned as overall champions. A total of five SCC teams participated in the event that spanned thirteen weeks of (interrupted) play. SEP / OCT 2021 THE PADANG

Cricket

CHASING THAT SILVER LINING IN THESE DARK CLOUDS... The past few months have been challenging for our cricketers, to say the least. Weekends at Padang or Dempsey have been a staple diet for most of us for many years now but the obstacles of carrying on with life in the wake of the virus and the associated lockdowns have not spared our cricket. Whenever it was possible and allowed by the rules, the Section enthusiastically participated in onfield and training activities. Our double wicket tournament, an innovative format that was crafted to adhere to social distancing rules saw huge uptake by our Members with games held across Padang and Dempsey. The intense format and the generally unforgiving heat meant that our Members would usually leave the field of play with high spirits but with nothing left in the tank! Training at our nets, whenever it has been made available, was very busy with young and old Members alike making use of the available slots to hone their skills or just kill their boredom. We announced a “Give Back” via a SGD 32 F&B credit to each Section Member as a token of appreciation for the support during the past several months. This was in addition to the free merchandise that was provided to each Member earlier in the year. The Section is currently also in the process of sourcing the uniquely designed “Tour to nowhere 2021” Section polo, which is an attempt to soothe the souls of the regular tourists of the Section! Incidentally, around two years ago - in August 2019 - the Section undertook a highly rated tour to England and witnessed some wonderful Ashes games at Edgbaston and Lords. It will come as no surprise to anyone that a few of our planned tours (both incoming and outgoing) have had to be cancelled this year but plans are afoot to draw a touring calendar for 2022 and 2023! Our Junior Program continues to grow and generate substantial interest from the broader cricketing community in Singapore. We are proud of the role we are playing in building the game at the grassroots level with a large number of kids in the 6-13 age group picking up the game and training under our team of coaches. Of particular interest is the uptake of cricket among girls and the increase in their enrolment numbers over the past 12 months. Social distancing and lockdown challenges notwithstanding, the Junior Program continues to be the crown jewel of our initiatives. This year has seen a few of our active Members leave Singapore and head back to their home countries - we do wish them well and thank them for their support and participation over the years. On the flip side, we have had several new Members join us and thus we look forward to taking the Section to greater heights with them. I have a feeling we would be back on the field soon - till then: get vaccinated, stay safe and stay fit!

FIRST AID COURSE Our Section Members from various teams (NFL, Tigers, Women’s, 3rd Team, Lions, Padantiques and Legends) attended a weekend full-day First Aid course on the 3rd and 4th of July 2021 at the Gilmour. During the Basic First Aid course, they learnt how to perform Basic First Aid, administer Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and use the Automated External Defibrillator (AED) machine on an unconscious casualty before help arrives. The course was conducted by Singapore Emergency Responder Academy (SERA) and it was organized by the Section committee in an initiative to educate our team members to react and administer proper assistance should an unfortunate incident happen during our football sessions or matches. We would like to thank these Members who have sacrificed their entire weekend, Vick from SERA, the SCC Sports Department and F&B Department for making it a successful and enjoyable one. Not forgetting our Committee Members Bruce Loggie and Paul Paffett for spear-heading this successful course.
SCC HOLIDAY CAMP During the month of July, we conducted two sessions of our very own SCC Holiday Football Camp. Each session consists of a fiveday program, in which the kids have the opportunity to practice and master basic football skills. We invited several ex-Singapore national team players during the camp to coach and engage with our academy players during the week. The players invited were ex-National defender R-Sasikumar, prolific striker Indra Sahdan, midfield maestro Abbas Saad, super-speedy Steven Tan and midfield general Samawira Basri. Camp attendees enjoyed themselves during the camp and also had the privilege to experience training like a professional footballer under the watchful guidance of our SCC Grassroot Coaches and celebrity coaches. We are looking forward to seeing more kids in the near future. Right, from top: R.Sasikumar in action with our camp attendees; our camp attendees with arguably one of Singapore’s prolific strikers, Indra Sahdan; our camp attendees featuring Malaysia Cup legend Abbas Saad.

Hockey
Convenor: Subhas Nathan | Article by: Kanan Packrisamy
GOOD THINGS COME TO THOSE THAT WAIT Almost 18 months without having proper hockey on hockey lawns or Astroturf, the SCC Hockey Section continues to hold onto their field of dreams. Despite the stop-start nature of things, restrictions of freedom of movement and more than the desired time at home, we have managed to somehow make do with what we have. We embraced the 4v4 when we could get up to eight in a group and just as we were beginning to miss “normal” hockey less, we went back to five in a group and then even more teasingly two. Realising that tango and hockey are not the same, the members waited it out till we once again have arrived at the less than quintessential quintuplet solution. Although not music to our ears, we have already taken in a session where 10 Members train in the two groups and spar in a few engaging and demanding 2v2 games with a substitute enjoying a breather. Not the best, but we somehow make it work. With footballers always sharing the hallowed Padang with us on Mondays and Wednesdays the banter and refreshments at the end in the same groups keeps the heart willing to come back for more. However, these uncanny times have seen a fair share of farewells. Gretel Cannon said her goodbyes just before we had to stop. The Australian legal eagle returned home to get charged up on family time, continue her career and bring to an end her Singaporean adventure. In her relatively short time here, Gretel served on the Section Committee and was eager to get another season under her belt, but she has promised to return in the future. Nonetheless, we welcomed some new juniors into the Section and Yasmin de Silva joined and has already loved the Padang sessions. Not born during the grass hockey era, Yasmin did well in both her outings thus far. On this positive note, the Hockey Section has grown accustomed to the trying times but it has firmly appreciated that good things will come to those that wait. The resumption of the Members’ Cup, SHF organised small-sided tournaments, perhaps even a full-league both indoor and outdoor and the long awaited launch of The Hockey SCChool are all around the corner; we await the bountiful of fun to be had!
From top right, clockwise: Atul makes another perfectly timed tackle with his backstick ;) ; Wayne preparing to steal the ball from unsuspecting Yasmin; Gretel looks on as new girl Yasmin puts away a goal; Stalwarts Durai and Dr Kong effervescent as ever as juniors Harsh and Leonard stay out of the way.

RELOCATING TO THE UK: WHAT ARE THE KEY CONSIDERATIONS? There are many reasons why someone might relocate to the UK. Perhaps there is a new employment or business opportunity which awaits, the end of an employment in Singapore that is approaching, or it could simply be for retirement or just to be near family. Equally, maybe you just want to split your time between Singapore and the UK. These alternatives have one thing in common – they will make you resident in the UK for tax purposes, and this is where the ‘rub’ really is from a financial perspective. The UK’s highest rate of Income Tax is double that of Singapore – it has a full suite of taxes for investment income and gains, an evolved system of Social Security contributions and, of course, the dreaded Inheritance Tax. In light of this, I would make a few observations. Firstly, the UK can be remarkably tax-efficient.You may be surprised to learn that a couple can enjoy incomes and gains of up to GBP 55,740 before paying tax. Tax-free incomes can also arise from Individual Savings Accounts (ISAs). Even when tax is due, dividends from shares and funds are taxed at a basic rate of just 7.5% and certain International Investment Accounts can prevent excess incomes from being taxed annually. In a presentation I regularly give, I walk through a case study of a British couple relocating to the UK with GBP 2.5m to invest and a target after-tax income of GBP 100,000. I show how they can generate gross incomes of GBP 150,000, invest GBP 40,000 per year of that into ISAs (tax-free income and gains), generate tax-free Capital Gains of GBP 20,000 and pay an effective rate of Income Tax of just 2.7%. All of these are achieved by using straightforward and tried-and-tested planning options. Secondly, whilst relocation is an inflection point for retirement planning, it is also a great opportunity for Inheritance Tax planning. There are tried-and -tested routes to tax efficiency which allow you to enjoy very low rates of Income Tax from sources which also provide tremendous Inheritance Tax savings, allowing you to meet income objectives whilst taking a sensible approach to succession planning. Thirdly, if you or your spouse are ‘non-domiciled’, additional long-established planning opportunities exist for assets situated outside of the UK which can protect you from tax on non-UK incomes and gains for up to 15 years and permanently shelter such assets from Inheritance Tax. These opportunities simply don’t exist for the majority of Britons returning home and they make the UK an even more attractive fiscal destination. Forthly, there are things to do before becoming a resident. Understanding the tax treatment of existing assets is key, as is avoiding assets which are taxed punitively. We typically recommend that gains from different asset classes are realised before you become resident in the UK. Indeed, some of the tax-efficient structuring we recommend should be put in place whilst you are still in Singapore. Finally, there is a particular planning opportunity for Singaporeans who have no connection to the UK apart from children or grandchildren who live in the UK long-term.You can structure your finances in Singapore in a manner which protects wealth, income and gains from UK taxation when those assets are passed to your next of kin upon your death. Without planning, those Singapore assets will generate returns which are subject to UK tax and form part of the estates of your UK domiciled beneficiaries for Inheritance Tax purposes. This can be avoided with a little restructuring. The obvious call to action is to take advice from skilled and experienced professionals who bring tax planning and wealth planning together in meaningful ways. After all, as far as the UK is concerned, wealth planning can’t really be done without tax planning. Tax planning will enhance the returns on your investments. The team at Select Investors has tremendous experience in helping clients who move to the UK. You might be relocating for the first time, but rest assured that we have done it thousands of times and can put all of that collective experience to work to your benefit. The levels and bases of taxation and reliefs from taxation can change at any time. The value of any tax relief depends on individual circumstances. What should you do now? For British Expatriates and those with assets or pensions in the UK, the Budget and Consultation Day announcements have left us with an obvious call to action. Select Investors invites all SCC members to a confidential no-obligation meeting with their Head of Tax, Martin Rimmer to discuss the impact of these announcements on your own tax, succession and wealth plans – and to make them better. Contact martin.rimmer@sjpp.asia to book your appointment.
