New Members! WELCOME
FROM THE DESK OF THE G.M. BY ANDY GREEN, GENERAL MANAGER
What an exciting time for our club! Carrollwood Country Club is BACK! I cannot begin to tell you how excited I am about this change and the opportunity that lies before us as we move more into the next chapter of our club. We've been thinking of making this change for over a year now. It just feels right. Our mission has been to create the best family oriented country club in the Tampa Bay area and we strongly felt that in order for us to accomplish this we had to be identifiable to our market. The fact is, the community didn't know who we were or where we were. We had to change that to grow. Putting the word "Carrollwood" back in the name gives us the immediate location identity that we needed. As we market this club going forward it will be much easier for us to tell our story. In the upcoming weeks you will see the club start to transform into our new name. We'll have a new logo with new colors, new signage, new marketing materials and a brand new website! We thank all of you that have supported us in this decision and we hope you can help us spread the word to your friends. Our Members are our best sales people. The club also went through an ownership change at the end of May. Concert Golf is a first class organization with a focus on owning/operating private country clubs. As a staff we are very excited to be employees of Concert Golf. They bring years of private club experience with a management team of skilled professionals. This transaction couldn't have come at a better time. The summer months will give us the opportunity to put this expertise into play and allow us the time to make the necessary improvements to bring our club experience to the next level. Some of these will be immediate including; new lounge chairs at the pool, five new cabanas and a newly painted splash pad. Some of them will come later on but they will be worth the wait. We will continue to update you as they happen. Thank you again for all of your support. This is truly a GREAT time to be a Member of Carrollwood Country Club!!

golf news BY DAREN JOHNSON, DIRECTOR OF GOLF We just concluded a very productive season! Membership is up! Rounds are up! And the greens are fantastic! We are a little over a month away from having 27 holes of great putting surfaces. For some of you, it has been over 6 months since you have played Cypress. Our goal is to open Cypress the second week in July! Unfortunately, after we open Cypress we will need to do another round of aerification on both Meadow and Pine. Our tentative dates for aerification are July 9 for Meadow and July 16 for Pine. As mentioned our membership is up which is fantastic news! With an increase in membership and still not having all 27 holes at our disposal the tee sheet still gets very busy Friday afternoons and Saturday mornings. Please be very aware of your pace on the golf course as our goal is to get every group around the golf course in 4 hours or less during these busy periods. Myself and the Assistants Professionals will continue to monitor the course and make slow groups aware of their pace and will ask these groups to please play faster. Fivesomes will continue to be allowed as long as these groups are able to maintain our pace of play standards and not interfere with the flow of the golf course.

tennis news Become More Consistent from the Baseline
Take the Rally Speed Test BY CHRIS CARY, TENNIS DIRECTOR Rally speed is the greatest pace at which a player can rally the ball in a neutral baseline position without error. Knowing and periodically monitoring your rally speed is a great reference point in establishing real improvement and helpful in being consistent from the baseline. From the coach’s stand point, it is a clear place to refer to when a student is either inconsistent or not forceful enough in a “neutral” rally situation (when you are neither offensive or defensive).
SUMMER TENNIS CAMP Session IV July 8th - 12th Session V July 15th - 19th Session VI July 22nd - 26th Session VII July 29th - August 2nd Session VIII August 5th - 9th
HALF DAY CAMPS & HOURLY CLASS OPTIONS
The purpose of rallying in a point, remember, is to open up your offensive opportunities and to prevent your opponent from taking the offensive putting you on the defensive. Players realizing their limits and staying within their current rally speed win matches -- lots of matches! One such player at Emerald Greens is Terra Brady. Terra has tortured opponents for years with her consistency -- a skill she has maintained mainly because she is aware of her rally speed and never tries to over hit beyond the speed she owns.
Small Net Half Day Camp: $150.00 Members $175.00 Their Guests 9:00 AM - 1:00 P.M. Monday - Friday • Ages: 4 to 7
Many club players tend to over hit -- emulating the pros’ rally speed without putting in the same time to learn efficient strokes and “grow the talent” through repetition. Finding out your actual rally speed can be humbling but very helpful; especially if you truly want to improve.
This Camp is designed to give beginners plenty of fun and encouragement while using larger depressurized tennis balls and smaller nets.
Here is how to test your current rally speed: 1. The Coach feeds the ball from the side of the court to Player A and starts his stopwatch as the Player makes contact with the ball. 2. Player A hits the ball to Player B. 3. A and B continue a baseline rally at a speed which allows them to make no mistakes. 4. The Coach stops the stopwatch as player A makes contact with the ball after both players have successfully completed a ten ball rally. This time is recorded as the Player’s speed.
Other guidelines: • Both backhands and forehands must be played in the test. • Players must not volley a ball on the baseline that would otherwise have been out. • Players must co-operate to achieve a realistic score. No half-volleys or purposely hit short balls must be played before the baseline. • Players should have a number of attempts at the Test with many different partners to achieve an individual score. During the historic 1995 Men’s US Open Final between Sampras and Agassi an absolutely incredible point was played from the baseline which included 20 of the hardest struck groundstrokes recorded up till that time. During this rally a ten ball succession was timed at 10.5 seconds! Most of our 4.5 players will find that their speed will be around 16 or 17 seconds. Once you find your rally speed, be encouraged. Knowing the reality of your current ability is absolutely necessary for future improvement. So, if your current rally speed winds up being only 20, you can set your goal to get to 18 by January. Players discovering that they were trying to rally faster than their ability allows, will find instant improvement once they slow down to the speed they actually own. Good luck finding and staying within your rally speed.
