Hello Carrollwood Members! We are off to a great 2017 as our January and February was very active in golf and social activities around the club. As you are aware the weather has been very cooperative this winter, allowing us many days to golf and enjoy our outside amenities. In recent weeks, I have visited multiple clubs around the Tampa area and am happy to say our golf course conditions continue to be some of the best in the area. In addition to our nice course conditions we have recently completed a $25,000 capital improvement project on our Meadow and Cypress nine golf cart paths. The multiple speed bumps that had been created by the growth of tree roots underneath the paths have been taken out and resurfaced. This was a much-needed project alleviating the possibility of damage to our new golf cart fleet and our membership as they traveled around the golf course. We are very excited at Carrollwood Country Club about the upcoming golf and social events that are scheduled during the next few months. Our Ladies Member Guest golf event is scheduled for March 30,2017 while our Men’s Member Guest is scheduled for April 27,28,29, 2017. On the social side of the calendar our Easter Brunch and Egg Hunt is scheduled for Sunday April 16, 2017. Each one of these events continue to be our highest attended and some of our most important events of the year. I would like to acknowledge our 2016 Employees of the Year by Department and our Overall Employee of the Year!

This award is determined by the staff within each department voting and electing their Department Employee of the Year representative. The following is our list of winners. Osvani Castillo

Around the Clubhouse TODD BROWNE, FOOD & BEVERAGE DIRECTOR Well, ladies and gentlemen, the first two months of the year have already flashed by us so quickly. With March and April upon us already, we have an exciting few months planned. But before we get too far into the future, I would like to sincerely thank all of the members for your support for a great Super Bowl turnout. What an amazing game, with an even more amazing finish!! Chef prepared his ever popular football tailgate spread featuring wings, BBQ chicken, BBQ ribs, burgers and hot dogs. Enough draft beer available to drown a whale. The highlight being the massive 12 by 15 foot screen and theatre quality sound system projecting the Big Game. We were blessed to have our members out to support us and their team. Love was in the air for our Valentine’s Day Dinner Dance. Chef’s four-course gourmet meal for our loving couples was a perfect pair with our house wine, ambiance of classic love songs and dancing. There was no long wait for your table to be ready here at the club. So for those of you who did have that long wait at your chosen restaurant, we would love to see you next year to join in on our fun. With no wait and personal care by our staff the members really loved every minute. So again, thank you all for your support!! With our two days of winter behind us, we are looking forward to another beautiful spring. Spring, representing change, we have enhanced our already delicious menu with new items for you all to enjoy in our newly named “Grille 72”. We named our sandwiches after each of our sister clubs. For instance, our Meatloaf Sandwich is named the “Gaillardia” after our club in Oklahoma for the abundance of beef cattle in the state. With other items such as; Toasted Raviolis, Patty Melt, and Bruschetta, just to name a few, the menu is looking better than ever. We take pride in our food quality and we want you to know that our new amazing menu items are crafted with the freshest local ingredients. Fresh, local produce brought in 6 days a week; bread from a local bakery brought in 5 days a week; fresh, never frozen hamburger meat; fresh, local seafood; and Boars Head deli meats. Don’t forget about our daily specials as well as Chef’s always amazing weekly dinner specials. We have incorporated all of our dinner specials with a choice of garden or Caesar salad. Also, we are now offering an appetizer sampler…choose 2 appetizers for $10 or 3 appetizers for $15. Our Wine Down Wednesday pasta night will be on special for a limited time at Buy One Get One Free!! You can’t beat that price anywhere you go!! Our Wine Down Wednesday still includes the chef-attended all you can eat pasta station cooked right in front of you, choice of garden or Caesar salad, garlic bread and complimentary glass of house wine. The new prime rib dinners have been a big hit! With a 6oz Queen cut and 10oz King cut prime rib, garden or Caesar salad, baked potato and veggies you can’t go wrong. If you would like a bigger cut, you can always have what you want when you come in to see us. 14oz Morris cut??? Absolutely!! Frank and Gene are still piloting the helm of our live music on Friday nights from 6:00-8:30pm. Things have been hopping here so, make your reservations early to ensure a spot on the terrace on these beautiful Spring nights to rock the night away. We have a lot of great events lined up for you all this year. With the first day of spring right around the corner we get things kicked off early in March with a new member event. Family Feud Carrollwood Style!! We need all of your groups of Feuding Families to come in for this one!! With a charismatic host leading the contestants on a course of random outbursts and hilarious moments you won’t want to miss this event!! Of course, there will be the ever delicious food and drinks being served throughout the event. With the entertainment being provided by, no other than you and your family for all to enjoy. Please, come out and make this new event one to remember. A prize will be awarded to the winning family. Inquire with us to find out the details.

Food & Beverage news As we spring forward again this year for daylight savings. These extra hours of daylight, open up the opportunity for our MGA guys to get their Thursday evening game in again. I know, it’s already been a year?? We’re always excited to get our Thursday night guys back in the swing of things. So when the boys are done playing we’ve got a big piece of prime rib for you to enjoy! A great indicator that the warmth and sunshine of summer is almost here is the re-opening of our Oasis Poolside Grille. That’s right, summer is almost here!! The Oasis will be open on Saturdays and Sundays starting March 4th. Our hours will be 11-6 like always. So, come on down and enjoy our beautiful Florida Spring with some sunshine and fish tacos! Then, the first weekend of April we will be in full swing at The Oasis 7 days a week 11:00am-7:00pm. The month of April has always been a crowd favorite! With the pranks of April Fools starting off the month with a laugh, you know it’s going to be a great month! Major League Baseball kicks off on the 4th this year, and we will have every game you want to see on our 15 televisions with our MLB Direct TV sports package. So come in and tell us what your favorite team is and we will get them on live for you. What’s a baseball game without some great food and great draft beer? Coors light being added to our already long list of ice cold draft beers will really make the decision to come hang out with us easy. Our comfortable ambiance and friendly staff will make you think you’re in box seats at your favorite team’s game. We look forward to seeing you here at “Grille 72” for all your games. We will be having the PGA Masters invitational on all the televisions for the second weekend in April. Let’s see if Danny Willett can do it again this year! And here we are at the big Easter Brunch again…how time flies!! Just like last year, our massive Easter Egg Hunt will be the kids’ favorite. With two hunts, at 10:00am and 1:30pm, there will be over 3,000 eggs for all of the children. As always, the Easter Bunny will make an appearance to capture the moment with the kids. There will also be face painters and a balloon artist to entertain the little ones. For the big kids, we have another amazing spread of delicious food to enjoy on the Brunch Buffet, Mimosas and Bloody Mary’s, and our attentive staff to take care of the needs of your family. Last year was massive, so get those reservations in as soon as you can, as spots fill up very quickly! Our April Traditions Dinner Dance this year, just as last year will be Monopoly themed on the 18th, Tax Day! So take a “Chance” jump on our B&O Railroad and stop by our Park Place and Boardwalk to enjoy some amazing food, dancing, and live entertainment. Otherwise you may not get Free Parking, advance straight to Jail don’t pass Go, don’t collect $200 and turn on the “Water Works” if you miss this great event that only happens one time per year. We look forward to seeing you there building your monopoly of family and friends. One of my favorite member events each month is our Bacchus Wine Dinner. It has become a very popular event! For those that are not familiar with this event, it is a chance for the Chef to show off his culinary skills with 5 courses of gourmet food paired with 5 different varietal wines. The event for March will be held on the 29th ,and will be hosted by Southern Wine and Spirits. In April, Republic National will be hosting the event on the 26th . We would love to see some new faces in the room, so come explore your pallet with some unique gourmet food and amazing wine! As always at the conclusion of our Bacchus dinners we offer our participants to purchase deeply discounted wines that they just sampled with their dinner. If there is anything that we can do here at the club to make your dining or banquet experience extraordinary, please feel free to call me any time to let me know. I strive for your club to be your favorite place to be!

news

From the Golf Shop BY SHAWN GORDON, DIRECTOR OF GOLF

Carrollwood Country Club Members, It’s amazing how fast the year is flying! Our busy season has arrived and the golf course is in fabulous shape. With that I would like to remind you to make your tee times in advance to ensure you get your desired time. I would like to take a moment to thank our grounds crew for their hard work in providing great consistent playing conditions. I would also like to thank you the members for your continued support of the course and the golf shop. In the golf shop we are receiving new merchandise daily. Updating and offering the latest in men’s and women’s apparel from Footjoy, Under Armor, Adidas, Travis Mathew and more. We also have the latest equipment and technology from several companies like Titleist, Cobra Bushnell and more. We have scheduled a Callaway Demo Day on March 24th 2017, and will run from 10am to 2pm. Come out and try the latest from Callaway and Hogan. What’s happening in the WGA? The ladies are off to a fast start playing every Thursday and Saturday. The 2017 WGA Member/Guest “A Zest for Golf ” is March 30, 2017 and will be an 8:45 shotgun start. The sign up board is available in the golf shop. The deadline to sign up is March 17, 2017 at 5:00pm. If you have any interest in joining the Women’s Golf Association please contact the golf shop or contact the WGA Chairperson Kathy McGlone at kathythegolfer@gmail.com. Our MGA has also started with great participation in the first two events with the first “Major” of the year this month. MGA Match play will begin on the 25th and 26th of March. We will shotgun start at 8:30 both days. You may call or sign up in the golf shop. If you are not a member of the Men’s Golf Association and would like more information or to join please stop by the golf shop and we will assist you. Don’t forget daylight savings is just around the corner. Whats that mean? The “Thursday Night Shootout “ is back. March 16th will be opening night so come join us

for some golf, good company and competition. Shotgun starts at 5:30 each Thursday. Other things around the course! As most of you have seen we have done some significant repair to the cart paths on Meadow and Cypress. Thank you very much for your patience during that time and we hope the repairs help create a more enjoyable golfing experience for you and your guests. We have also started to paint a blue line 30 to 40 yards from each green. We ask that you use this line as an indicator to take carts to the cart path. This practice will help us keep the grass around the greens and approaches in much better playing conditions. We are also having a “Golf Cart Key Amnesty”. I would like to ask you to please check you golf bags, cars and junk drawers at home for any extra keys. If you find any please drop them off in the golf shop. As always thank you for your continued support of the club and remember “when it’s breezy swing easy and great golfing”. See you around the club. Sincerely,

Shawn Gordon , PGA Director of Golf

PINK BALL TOURNAMENT: On February 16th and 18th the WGA ladies will have their PINK BALL tournament. At this event, all will start with a pink ball and we will see after 18 holes how many pink balls remain. Good luck to all! While not a sponsored WGA official event, we want to thank Cheryl & Jeff Stoker for organizing a fun “couples” social event on Sunday, afternoon January 29th. The morning weather did not seem promising with heavy rain and wind. Some couples dropped out by noon but 4 teams prevailed and the weather cleared up just as we got started. Thanks to those who came out to play; Liz and Pete Lagos, Nancy & David Pulliam, Cheryl and Jeff Stoker, Karen & Mitch Bentley, Kathleen & Dale Rodekuhr and Grace & Rick Hogan. In just a few weeks we have a LOW PUTTS DAY, here’s a few simple tips I found online to improve your putting. Now if we could all NOT 3 putt!

Step 1 Stand with your feet shoulder-width apart. Your toes, knees, hips and shoulders should be on the same vertical plane.

Step 2 Keeping your back straight, bend slightly at the waist until your eyes are directly over the golf ball.

Step 3 Let your arms hang loosely. Grip your putter where your hands naturally clasp together.

Step 4 Grip the putter firmly. Keep your hands, wrists, arms and head still. Make a stroke by rocking your shoulders like the pendulum on a grandfather clock, straight back and straight through. It should be a smooth, rhythmic motion.

And remember:

“Golf is an endless series of tragedies obscured by the occasional miracle”

Mary Smith hit her approach shot to the green and her ball stopped inside the basket of Sandy Peers’ cart. Do you know the correct ruling on this situation?

Dianne Ferris goes BIG time getting an eagle on Pine #7. 139 yard shot, February 9, 2017

From the Golf Course Superintendent The maintenance staff and I are eagerly awaiting the warmer weather of March and April although the recent weather we have experienced has been nothing short of spectacular. This is the first year that I’ve been here where we did not experience a frost day in January. February also proved to be a very mild month. I would like to remind everyone of the importance of fixing your ball marks and filling your divots; if a ball mark is left unrepaired on a green it can take up to two weeks for the area to heal leaving a depression and a brown scar and can be difficult to putt through. The staff and I do our best to keep up with them but I am asking for your help in this matter. We have painted a blue line across the approaches of all the holes except the par 3’s. The purpose of this line is to keep carts off the green slopes. I’ve tried ropes and they work to a certain degree but I feel they are unsightly around a greens complex. Carts should be kept 25 yards away from a greens complex. The reason we did not mark the par 3’s is because you should always keep your cart on the path on all of our

par 3’s at all times. Your cooperation in this matter will be greatly appreciated. As we enter the warmer months and the turf begins to actively grow we will continue our practice of light verticutting to the greens followed with a light sand topdressing ; this practice helps remove grain from our greens surfaces and the sand helps the turf stand more vertical reducing grain. In midMarch we will be putting out a bulk application of fertilizer to the courses. This will not affect play in anyway and will only make conditions better as vital nutrients are introduced to the soil for our turf. If you have any suggestions, questions or concerns regarding the golf course or any of the agronomic practices that we perform on the golf course my office door is always open. See you on the course.

CVST’s Sweetheart Meet A Success In & Out Of The Water This past month's CVST Sweetheart Meet was the first full 3-day swim meet held at the CCC Aquatic Complex, and a big success both in and out of the water. On the dry side of the meet, it went off without a hitch. Thanks to all those CVST Parents who gave their time volunteering at the meet along with our CVST USA Swimming Officials who ran the competition. A meet of this length and size just couldn’t be pulled off without you. Also, please remember, especially those CVST Parents who did not help out with this meet, the next two big meets do have the requirement for all CVST families to work a minimum of three sessions or be billed for each of the three sessions not worked. Thanks also to our co-hosts from STA for supplying drinks, timers and awards personnel. On the wet side of the meet (in the water), CVST had a lot of PBT's (Personal Best Times), including 10&U Team Records coming from Jayden Repak in the Individual Medley events, and numerous great first time swims, especially in the distance events. Great job by all of our CVST Swimmers! CCC Member of The Month: Nola Smith

Carrollwood Country Club’s Biggest Tennis Event of the Year Was a Big Success! Boasting of close to 60 participants, CCC Tennis Members and their guests enjoyed 3 days of wonderfully competitive and fun tennis. Thank you to all participants.

In a way, it’s hard to mention Nola as the Tennis Member of the Month as the title just doesn’t seem big enough. A member at Carrollwood for almost 40 yeaers, Nola has captained multiple league teams, served as a member of Tennis Events Committees and volunteered her time for countless club events and activities. Nola, together with many other fine tennis members, weathered the “storm” for many years before the club was rebuilt and returned to it’s original beauty. Her loyalty and devotion to the club and it’s members is second to none. Thank you Nola for all that you do and for being a model Carrollwood Country Club Tennis Member.

League Tennis News & Other Happenings BY NOLA SMITH, TENNIS REPRESENTATIVE I would like to be able to say that ALL of our leagues will finish in first place, but I can’t say that yet, as we still have some matches still to be played. On Monday’s, our 3.0 Ladies USTA, now known as the Carrollwood Classics, are currently in 7th position, but with 3 matches left, are hoping for a strong finish. A great group of ladies, some just starting out and enjoying the experience of League play. For those of you out there looking for a league that offers some fun competition and great camaraderie, check with our Tennis Director, Chris Cary, for more information, or team captain Beatta Abbs. Tuesday, our Suncoast League (3T’s – Terrific Tuesday Tennis) has really been on a roll. At the time of this writing, our overall teams (#1 through 14) had placed in the middle or higher …. Our “B” team (#teams 8 thru 14) are currently in 4th place, only 4 points behind the leading club. All of our teams have done so well, but I would like to highlight a few – playing #1 for Suncoast is a very difficult task, but Ashlee Gramatica & Gyorgyi Zsiros are up to the challenge, winning 11 out of 17 matches to date (with some help from our wonderful subs), 10 wins for our #8 team, Sue Diaz & Amanda Hammerli (first year playing for Suncoast!),

11 wins for Pat Cayton & Debbie Silva, and Karen Mace & Karen Morgan – posted a 10-2 record in the fall and was undefeated, with 4 wins, at the beginning of the Spring season. Our WOW (Women of Wednesday) Interbay and ALOT teams, both play on Wednesday’s. Our Interbay team has been enjoying the challenge of facing tough teams with great competitive matches. Out of 16 teams, and 4 matches they are around the middle of the pack. While enjoying their matches, the fun continues at quaint lunch spots, and are looking forward to lots more FUN on and off the court this season. With the first 4 ALOT matches already in the books at the time of this report, CCC is in 3rd place (out of 8!). Having to push pass Brandon Sports & Aquatic Center, and with several matches to go, they definitely plan on ending up on top of the standings. A big thank you to the Subs that play (for all of our leagues); Co-captain Lori Solomon offers this quote from Billie Jean King ….”For me, losing a tennis match isn’t a failure, it’s research!” Thursday nights under the lights – our C’5’s 3.5 Ladies USTA team are currently in 4th place halfway through the season, and hoping to get a few more wins in the second half to move up, up, up in the rankings. After tennis is done for the evening, please join in for apres tennis. On Friday’s we have our 4.0 Ladies USTA leagues (Net Ninja’s). They have had some really strong matches, lots of 3-setters, and just overall great tennis. Bring your coffee and come watch some good tennis and support the team! Other Happenings – a very successful Tennis Derby, held in February, with both women’s, men’s and mixed divisions. By now, Chris has posted the winners of each of the divisions – congratulations to everyone! Also, we continue to have very successful Free Friday Night Socials – last one is held on March 10th, so plan on coming out and enjoying some fun, social tennis, enjoy an adult beverage and meet some of your fellow tennis members.
