FROM THE DESK OF THE G.M. BY GIL COTE, GENERAL MANAGER

Hello Carrollwood Members! We are off to a great 2018. As you are aware, this January we saw temperatures below freezing which is definitely not common place for this area. However, the weather and the golf course rebounded nicely and we had an extremely active February both in golf and our social events. As you visit the club over the next few weeks you will notice several new projects underway. We are currently making improvements to our restrooms on the course, which includes fresh paint, roof cleanings, new mirrors, new toilets and ceiling fans. We will also be upgrading the water fountains at each location. Over the last few months we have continuously made improvements to the wooden walls and bridges. These efforts will proceed over the next few weeks, so please be aware of workers when driving. Lastly, Chuck and his team will begin addressing several of the tee boxes across the 3 nines. Lack of sunlight has played a major role in diminishing their conditions, these areas will be re-grassed with more shade tolerant strands such as zoysia and tifgrand. I would like to acknowledge our 2017 Employees of the Year by Department and our Overall Employee of the Year! Employee of the Year by Department This award is determined by the staff within each department voting and electing their Department Employee of the Year representative. The following is our list of winners. Sara Miracle, Food and Beverage (Front of the House) Nkosa Siseko (Cole), Food and Beverage (Back of the House) John Keeley, Golf Course Maintenance Concepcion Perez, Housekeeping Meredith Seibold, Tennis and Aquatic Center Aaron Scofield, Golf Operation Employee of the Year (Overall) The Senior Management team of department heads then take the list of department winners and elect the Overall Employee of the Year. The 2017 Overall Employee of the Year is actually a tie for the first time.

BY RENEE CONSTANTINE, DIRECTOR OF MEMBERSHIP SALES

Hello CCC Members!!!! Happy Spring Time. I am thrilled to now be in the Spring months and looking forward to much nicer weather. My word, it was a tough winter for us Floridians. I’m still grateful that we live in Florida, for it could have been much worse. So, let’s all get ready to have a great Spring and enjoy our wonderful club and all that it has to offer. We have some great events to look forward to in the upcoming months. April 26th & 27th is our Member-Guest Golf Tournament. If you have not signed up please do so, for this year will not disappoint! And remember, if you have a potential member joining you for this event, we will have some very lucrative offers not only for the new member but for you as well. I will be here on property throughout the event so be sure to find me. I will also be sending out emails periodically with Member Upgrade Specials, so be sure to not miss those when they come around. In golf, we have Match Play Games, Couples Scramble and our WGA Member-Guest Tournament in March. Our Men’s Member-Guest in April and Men’s Member-Member in October. November is our Club Championships and December is our Club Finale. Don’t forget we have a great WGA group as well, with our Orange Ball Tournament in November along with the Women’s Club. Fun times ahead. Our Tennis & Aquatic Center does not disappoint either, with a very active schedule including all kinds of fun classes, such as Yoga, Ballroom Dancing and Fitness Classes. For Tennis come out for our Junior Tennis Program. Starting with Sprouts classes for ages 3 to 5, Junior Grand Prix Tennis Classes for ages 6 to 11, Varsity Prep Classes for ages 12 to 18 and College Prep Classes for ages 18+. All good stuff. Contact our Tennis & Aquatic Center for more information! We are home to the CVST Swim Team coached by Jim Kelly who always has fun activities on the schedule… As I have mentioned, and as you all may have heard around the club, 2018 is going to be a great year with course and clubhouse improvements. CCC has something for everybody. Our Social Calendar will be full of fun events such as our Murder Mystery Dinner, our Bacchus Wine Dinners, Bingo Nights, Live Music on the Terrace and our Gourmet Beer Dinners. We are always open to suggestions as far as what might interest you, so please feel free to contact me with your ideas. Keep in mind, a good way to save yourself some money in 2018 is to refer new members. For every Membership referred, you will receive one month equal to their monthly dues. And always look for special promotions on referrals as well. We truly do have a great club and I thank you, the members, for making that possible.

Mr. & Mrs. Doug Winton

Let’s have a Great, Fun, Safe Spring! Best Regards,

Renee Constantine Director of Membership

Golf

news

From the Golf Shop BY SHAWN GORDON, DIRECTOR OF GOLF

Carrollwood Country Club Members, It’s hard to believe January & February has already flown by and wow was it a cold one. The golf course held up great and is in perfect condition moving into March. Our maintenance staff has really worked hard to maintain the playing conditions during the cold weather. As we move into the busy season, please remember to make tee times to ensure you get the times you need. I would also like to ask you for help with maintaining the conditions by filling your divots with sand, fixing your and other ball marks on the greens as well as following the cart rules when around tees and greens. Around the tees please try to keep all four tires on the cart path. Around the greens you will find a blue painted line, please keep the carts on the outside of this line. This will ensure a better playing surface around the greens and approaches. With your help we can maintain what I feel is one of the premier clubs in the Tampa area. In the golf shop Hannah just returned from the PGA Merchandise show and has some of the latest clothing from Vineyard Vines, Footjoy, Travis Mathew, Under Armor and more. In equipment we have the latest technology from Titleist and Callaway with demos available for both. We also have the latest in golf eyewear from Oakley, Bolle and Seringetti. The WGA is off and running. The ladies are playing every Thursday and Saturday morning. If you have any interest in joining the Women’s Golf Association please contact the golf shop or contact the WGA Chairperson Kathy McGlone at kathythegolfer@gmail. com . Our MGA kicked off with our Opening Day Scramble with great participation and a lot of fun. Our next event is the Red Tee Challenge, and in March we will have our first Major with the Match Play Tournament. In April, we will have our annual Men’s Member-Guest, as usual, the last weekend of the month. If you have any questions or would like to join the MGA please contact us in the golf shop and we will get you started. We recently introduced Aaron Scofield as our Head Golf Professional and Andrew Farrell as our Director of Instruction/ Outside Supervisor. Both gentlemen have earned their promotions and have been a great addition to the club. Andrew has implemented several new golf instructional programs including The Ladies Only Clinic every Wednesday from 9 am to 10 am, as well as, a Weekly Junior Clinic on Saturdays from 2:30 pm-3:30 pm throughout the season. If you have any questions or would like to sign up for any of these programs, please call the golf shop. As always thank you for your continued support of the club and remember “when it’s breezy swing easy and great golfing”. See you around the club. Sincerely,

Shawn Gordon, PGA Director of Golf

BY KAREN BENTLEY, CORRESPONDING SECRETARY

2018 MATCH PLAY TOURNAMENT: Chairperson - Karen Marotta Between weather challenges; frost, rain and cold temperatures the 2018 Match Play got underway January 4th, ending on Wednesday January 31st, with the final match between Amanda Peterson and Irene Lukasik. Due to rain on Sunday, January 28th, the finals were moved to Wednesday, January 31st. *Thanks to all the WGA members who participated this time: Ann Barclay, Vanie Benedetto, Beverly Boas, Dianne Ferris, Kelly Hossler, Dawn Kelly, Liz Lagos, Marita Lauer, Irene Lukasik, Patsy Lynch, Karen Marotta, Suzie Patteson, Amanda Peterson, Kathleen Rodekhur, Mary Smith and Cheryl Stoker.

Beverly Boas and Amanda Peterson are all smiles after their very competitive match in the semifinals of Match Play. Amanda prevailed and went to the finals against Irene Lukasik.

This BIRDIE shot by Mary Smith on Cypress #3 would have been her 4th Hole in One. Terrific Birdie!!

*(some ladies had to withdraw before their match due to illness and injury) Karen Moratta (who ran the tournament), provided weather information, regular updates and the rules of play! This was an exceptionally well-run tournament with a terrific number of participants. Thanks to Karen M… way to go!

2018 MEMBER-GUEST TOURNAMENT: Thursday, March 22nd The WGA MEMBER - GUEST Tournament theme this Spring is “SWINGING DOWN THE FAIRWAYS”. Teams will consist of 2 members and 2 guests or 1 member and 3 guests. Deadline for signup is March 12th.

Bev Boas (left) with Suzie Patteson Match Play runners - up/ 3rd place

Amanda Peterson-Yaeger (left) wins 2 & 1 2018 MATCH PLAY Championship against Irene Lukasik (right) in the finals. Outstanding competition and a great match by these two excellent WGA golfers. Congratulations Amanda the NEW 2018 Match Play Champion.

Wonderful prizes, raffles, on course contests, plus a delicious lunch... what a fabulous day the committee has planned! Our talented committee members are: Dianne Ferris, Mary Smith, Liz Lagos, Dawn Kelly, Patsy Lynch, Vanie Benedetto and Marilyn Connors.

FEBRUARY PINK BALL TOURNAMENT: February 15th & 17th At this very fun regular play day all golfers will start with a PINK BALL, at the end of the tournament we will see how many PINK BALLS remain. Good Luck to all players!

GOLF ISN’T HARD ENOUGH?? JANUARY provided many COLD WEATHER Challenges! Cold, frigid temperatures and some rainy days kept many of us home under a cozy blanket sipping hot chocolate, tea or coffee and reading a good book on our regular day of Thursday/Saturday play. Some WGA “diehards” DID come out all bundled up to play. Gloves, hats, earmuffs and scarves were worn by our WGA “diehards” on those very wintery Florida days.

COUPLES “Valentine” GOLF EVENT: Sunday, February 11th, 2018 While not a sponsored WGA “official” event, we want to thank Cheryl & Jeff Stoker for organizing a fun “couples” social event on Sunday afternoon, February 11th. Sixty-Eight CCC members are signed up to play (at the time of this writing). What an incredible turnout!

From the Golf Course Superintendent The maintenance staff and I are eagerly awaiting the warmer temperatures of March and April. The weather in January was quite cold with several mornings of frost delays. The good news is that all three nines made it through January's cold weather unscathed; except for the 300 plus unrepaired ball marks on some of the greens. We had an act of vandalism on Cypress 3 green where a private golf cart drove and skidded across the back right of the green and this area is no longer puttable due to the rutting and turf loss. Very disheartening to see especially in such a nice area as Carrollwood. Unfortunately, this area will not be playable until April at the earliest. During the upcoming months we will be Pencil Tining all putting green surfaces and will continue with our topdressing program to the greens. These practices will cause minimal damage to our greens and are necessary to provide our members a quality putting surface. We will also be fertilizing the entire golf course in late March. As always practice good golf etiquette while you’re playing. If you should have any questions or concerns regarding the course feel free to contact me. See you on the course.

League Tennis News & Other Happenings BY NOLA SMITH, TENNIS REPRESENTATIVE

It’s hard to believe it’s already March. Our Leagues are all well underway. They all dealt with rainouts in January, and have had to play “catch up”, but here are some updates: Tuesday – our Suncoast League – always Terrific Tuesday Tennis, is one of the most competitive leagues in our area with players ranging from teaching pros to beginners. Carrollwood Country Club is fortunate to have 28 committed players to compete each week. Our #1 team, Ashlee Gramatica and Dianne Albina had the best record in the Fall. Our spring season is proving to be equally challenging and we are able to stay in the top l/3 of the overall standings. Our courts are among the BEST in the league, with a great tennis staff to maintain them and our Carrollwood players are among the best as well. Wednesday – (2 Leagues) – our Wednesday Interbay League – the Wild & Wacky Women of Wednesday are having a great season to date and are on a roll to begin the Spring second half of the season. Our latest match had us taking the lion’s share vs. the Davis Island Roadrunners by a LANDSLIDE 6-1 score.

Currently, we are pleased to report a 3rd place start to date. Our Wednesday ALOT League – the Spring season is underway, and at the time this article was written, 3 matches had been played, putting us in 2nd place. Our top two lines both have 3 wins with Rita & Hope moving to the second line. Lots of competitive tennis going on! Hoping for sunny, fair weather for the rest of the season. Thursday – our 3.5 USTA Women’s League (C5’s), are being coached by our Assistant Tennis Pro, Gyorgyi Zsiros, in the hopes of developing a strong team that can be competitive enough to compete regionally by next season. The team started it’s season off in January with two tight matches, just being edged out two lines to three. It’s early in the season, so we have high hopes for the rest of the season… Come support the team on Thursday mornings! Wednesday night is Men’s Tennis Night – plenty of room for more players to come play some competitive, fun tennis. Contact Chris Cary if interested. Our Annual Event of the Year – The Tennis Derby – was held in February and was, once again, a great success. Pictures have been posted of the winning teams and their owners. Thanks to all for participating, and a big thank you to our Tennis Events Committee, and their leader, Tennis Director, Chris Cary. Also, a shout out to Jake for grilling the best hamburgers and hot dogs in town! Mark your calendars for the next Friday night (FREE) tennis social, March 16th – with a St. Patrick’s Day theme. Good Tennis Everyone, Nola
