As we approach this holiday season we say thank you for your support with our recent events. The Boo Bash was a great success with over 300 attendees and our Bacchus Wine dinners have evolved into a monthly event attended by an average of over 65 members and their guests. It is because of your continued support that we can grow these events each year into something more and more enjoyable for all. Even though the year is winding down, the fun is just starting here at the club and we hope to see each of you at one of our upcoming events. Check out Danny’s food and beverage update for more information.
THE COUNTRY CLUB AT WOODMORE
Chuck Cakmakci and the golf course maintenance team continue to provide us with some of the best playing conditions in the area. We recognize the tremendous job he and his team did with recovering swiftly from the hurricane while maintaining the integrity of the course. I also want to express my gratitude to those that respect the golf courses and incredible conditions. As we see traffic on the course increase please remember to rake bunkers, fill in divots with sand, address ball marks, obey cart signs and traffic rules by not driving next to greens and tees. When golfers are diligent, this ensures everyone gets the chance to appreciate the great conditions of the golf course and assists the maintenance team in providing continued desirable playing conditions. With a little help from you Carrollwood Country Club will continue to be one of the gems of Tampa.

We will be closing out 2017 with a few more improvements around the clubhouse and golf course. In early November, the carpets throughout the clubhouse will be cleaned and stain treated. We will also begin touch up painting around the clubhouse which will continue into the new year. This is regular maintenance that must be completed gradually throughout the year and we appreciate your patience. The club will also be taking steps to improve our first impression. We have purchased a new starter podium and trash receptacle that will replace our current weathered pieces and we will be adding some improved directional signage to the course. Golf course maintenance will continue to cut and clear some remaining dangerous leaning trees and then move onto repairing the damaged drainage systems from the storm. Repairing the drainage will be a lengthy process likely taking several weeks. Over the past few months we have been focused on infrastructure repair. We addressed several roof leaks at the main clubhouse. We also repaired our beer coolers, entrance gate, and addressed several issues with the air conditioning. Finally, it has been a pleasure continuing to meet our members and their families. Carrollwood has made me feel very welcome and I am excited to see where 2018 takes us. If we haven’t had the chance to connect yet, I hope our paths will cross soon and I am looking forward to our growing relationship and the feedback you have to offer. As always we look forward to seeing you around the club and hope you have a happy holiday season.

From the Golf Shop BY SHAWN GORDON, DIRECTOR OF GOLF
Carrollwood Country Club Members, Happy Holidays! It’s hard to believe the year is almost over. I would like to thank you all for your continued support of the club. The golf course is in fabulous shape as we move into winter so we anticipate getting much busier. Please remember to make your tee times so that we may accommodate all members. On the golf course you will notice a blue line painted on the fairways, short of the green. These lines are where we ask that your cart goes to the cart path. This practice will help keep the conditions of the approaches in great shape. We have also placed reminders in the cart with suggested etiquette while playing. Again, these suggestions are to help keep your facility at its best. The holidays are just around the corner. With that in mind, skip the mall crowds and pick up Holiday Gifts in the Pro Shop. We are fully stocked with all of your golf needs from the hottest brands such as Vineyard Vines, Adidas, Travis Mathew, and much more! Golf Lesson Packages are also available, see the Pro Shop for more details. Let us help you with your holiday shopping.

The WGA SIP N SOCIAL & our OPENING DAY were rescheduled due to HURRICANE IRMA!! On September 9th & 10th, Tampa was in the “bull’s eye” of a direct line of strike for its first Hurricane since 1921, that’s over 96 years! IRMA was on her way! Fortunately for all of us in the Bay area when she did arrive it was downgraded to a Category 1 instead of a Category 5. Irma caused plenty of wind and tree damage with a loss of power for many in the North Tampa area and beyond… but YES we were the LUCKY ones with less damage than the Caribbean Islands and the city of Houston, Texas with its visit from Hurricane Harvey.
Paris Opening Day Paris 1st Place
The two big Fall WGA events were rescheduled; The Sip n’ Social moved to September 19th and Opening Day to September 28th.
Tiempo de Golf (Sip n’ Social)
Delightful Quesadillas and happy hour drinks lightened the mood for the 16 returning WGA golfers and 2 guests who joined us. We all had a chance to reconnect, share summer travel stories, and also share how we were affected by Irma’s visit. Two new guests joined us and we hope they got a chance to learn more about the WGA and what fun we have playing golf together on Thursdays and Saturdays. Thanks to our past President Sandie Peer and new WGA President Marilyn Connors for making this event such a success!
Paris 2nd Place
Paris 3rd Place
Opening Day: SEPTEMBER IN PARIS, 9/28/17
What talent we have!!! Besides all being strong golfers, Bev Boas, Kelly Hossler & Kathleen Rodekhuhr planned a delightful morning of golf with plentiful decorations, raffle prizes and a French luncheon ( it was exactly like we were dining on the River Seine in Paris) to enjoy. The prizes, quiche, salad nicoise, and dessert of lemon chiffon mousse were wonderful and these ladies carried the entire PARIS theme from start to finish!
Tournament Winners:
1st Place: Kelly Hossler, Irene Lukasik and Liz Lagos 2nd Place: Young Hong and Suana Stewart 3rd Place: Cheryl Stoker, Dianne Ferris and Vanie Benedetto Longest Drive on Cypress #9 - Kelly Hossler Straightest Drive on Meadow #8 - Suana Stewart Closest to the Pin on Cypress #3 - Cheryl Stoker Closest to the Pin Meadow #3 - Cheryl Stoker Putting Contest - Kelly Hossler Also it was so great that Elaine Fess joined us from the “9 hole” ladies. Elaine, we enjoyed having you with us. Several ladies won prizes with their raffle tickets including designer sunglasses, a Parisian golf seat cover, French dinner for 6 and a YETTI logo cup. We are definitely are off to a good start!

UPCOMING EVENTS: October 26th & 28th - The Fall ORANGE BALL Tournament. December 7th - The WGA HOLIDAY PARTY December 14th & 16th - Tree Tournament
Quote of the Day
“Sometimes, being with your golf friends is all the therapy that you need.”
From the Golf Course Superintendent Fall is my favorite time on the golf course. Temperatures have dropped along with the humidity, the chance of afternoon thunderstorms is nearly zero, and no more hurricanes. The golf courses are in the best shape of the year. If you play golf, you should come out and enjoy our beautiful courses. We have wrapped up our summer maintenance practices and the courses have responded well. Hurricane Irma, although not devastating to the golf courses, did put us behind in our detail work throughout. We received nearly 7 inches of rain from the storm and lost 60 trees and palms. We do have some drainage that was severely damaged on the Cypress course that we will be repairing in the near future. Many of you may remember that we do not overseed our golf courses. Rather, we use a green pigment on the turf to provide color
to our fairways and tees in the winter months. This procedure will start usually two weeks before our first cold front. By using a pigment rather than overseeding, we are allowing our Bermuda to thrive rather than compete with the overseed for nutrients. We also avoid the headaches of transitioning from cool season turf to our base Bermuda in the spring, a process that sometimes can take months to achieve. We usually spray this pigment every three weeks during the winter months depending on temperatures and how the turf is performing. If you should have any questions regarding the golf courses or the procedures we do on the golf courses, my office door is always open and I would be more than happy to explain any situation to you. As always, the staff and I appreciate your efforts in helping to provide the best possible conditions by following proper golf course etiquette.

Come Swim With Us this Fall Swim Team Tryouts Weekly Last Month at the October CVST Friday Night at the Races swim meet, the CVST Athletes recognized the many years of service to Florida Swimming and especially to the Carrollwood Village Swim Team, by John Ware. The criteria for the award is as follows: The recipient must have made a significant contribution to the CVST Program before being considered for the award. Nominees for the award will be submitted to the Head Coach by a specified deadline each year with a brief description stating why they are deserving of this honor. The Coaching Staff and Team Captains will narrow the list of Nominees down to a maximum of four (Nominations may be made by any Senior 1 Athlete or Coach Member of the Team). The four nominees will be presented in ballot form to the CVST Senior 1 Members for the final vote. This award is not necessarily presented every year. These criteria may be amended at any time by theCVST Senior 1 Practice Group with the approval of the Head Coach.
The Carrollwood Village Swim Team is always looking for interested swimmers!! Come out and join us for FUN, FITNESS & FRIENDS! Prior to the start of the meet, CVST Team Captain, Meredith Seibold, took the mic and made the following presentation: CVST Coach Jim Kelly has been with the Carrollwood Village Swim Team for 31 years, Coach Randy Johnson for 27 years and Coach Bill Schaffer from Academy swam for CVST over 30 years ago. The one common thread through all these years has been Mr. John Ware. When Coach Jim came to the team, prior to computers being common, Mr. Ware took care of everything from Team Records to Meet Entries. He was a “Computer Wiz” before computers were common, and he’s still doing CVST’s meets to this day. Tennis Events Committee member, Holly Charles reports we came close to raising $500.00 for Katie’s charity – St. Tomothy’s Youth Group which is devoted to helping orphanages in Central America. Thank you to all who participated in this wonderful event.

League Tennis News & Other Happenings BY NOLA SMITH, TENNIS REPRESENTATIVE As you are reading this article, most of our Leagues are underway. Tuesday is our Suncoast League (consisting of 14 doubles teams). The League has barely begun thanks to a delay from “Irma”, but the team is enjoying early success on the courts; Carrollwood is currently in the top 1/3 of the standings and they are looking forward to more great tennis throughout the Fall season. An awesome group of ladies who always give their best effort and “let their racquets do the talking”!
Additional happenings and reminders: As mentioned above, lessons and clinics and just plain fun tennis are always available at the courts. Adult Tennis Fitness Classes are available on Mondays (sign up at TAC front desk), our November Free Friday Night Mixer is November 10th….the theme….Be Thankful. Also, 3.0 and 4.0 Women’s USTA leagues will begin in January.
We have two leagues on Wednesdays – our ALOT team (5 doubles teams), who are halfway through their Fall season, with a 3-2 record. Hurricane Irma left them with 2 rainouts which still need to be made up. Our beautiful Fall weather should allow this to happen on the appointed days.
Nola
More updates in the next newsletter, but in the meantime, good tennis everyone.
Our second Wednesday league is our Wacky & Wonderful Wednesday Interbay League, consisting of 7 doubles teams. The 2017-18 season is also currently in the top third of a very competitive field. After tennis, it’s then time for lunch at our wonderful club facilities. A big thank you to our professional tennis staff who offer all players clinics and lessons that add to their “toolbox of strategies”, to our front office desk staff, led by Janice, for coordinating our courts, and to the court maintenance staff, getting up “at the crack of dawn” to have the courts ready no matter what challenges they may face. Thursday night is Ladies night at CCC, and an open round robin continues. A new game has been incorporated called Triples, which can be played with 6 players instead of 8 when necessary. Inspired by our Assistant Tennis Pro Gyorgyi, it is truly a blast and just adds another feature to what can be offered at our Club. Please feel free to contact Chris with your email address and phone number if interested.
