FROM THE DESK OF THE G.M. BY ANDY GREEN, GENERAL MANAGER

The survey says… I used to love the old Family Feud with Richard Dawson “the host who got away with the most”. We cannot begin to thank the over 400 of you that took time out of your busy schedules to give us your input on our Member Survey. The results are extremely helpful and we will certainly use this information in our decision making in the coming months. Below are the summary results which we hope you find informative. To those of you that took the time to complete the survey, we thank you. Here’s some interesting statistics from the Membership Survey:

We have a very exciting season in front of us! Our course renovations are now completed and I firmly believe we now have one of the best golf facilities in all of Tampa. A special “shout out” to our Golf Course Superintendant Chuck Cakmakci and his team for all of their hard work over the past year. We have made monumental strides in terms of golf course conditions and it’s all because of Chuck and his team. It’s a labor of love and we love Chuck! Hope to see all of you out for our Member-Member Golf & Tennis weekend on October 5th thru the 7th. We have placed these two tournaments on the same weekend with the hopes of bringing all of the participants together along with the rest of you for our annual Oktoberfest Celebration. Hope to see you there! Thanks for all you do.

What's New on the Course... BY DAREN JOHNSON, DIRECTOR OF GOLF

Carrollwood Country Club Members: The summer doldrums are just about over! We are looking forward to a very busy season as we finally have 27 holes of great greens. Chuck and his staff have had their hands full getting Cypress ready for your enjoyment considering the amount of rain we have had over the past several months. However, everything has come together perfectly as the greens look great and the new bunker additions look awesome! As we move into peak season you will start to notice a lot of new furnishings on the practice tee and golf courses. On the practice tee we will have new bag stands, station dividers, club cleaners, yardage signs (will measure flags everyday), WATER STATION and new flags on the putting green. On the courses we will be removing all the granite tee signs and will replace them with a more classic tee sign which will just have course name and hole number. Each nine will also receive new CCC flags with new flagsticks which will have the reflectors for your yardage devices. I am very excited about all of the new furnishings and believe it will add more "wow factor" to our club and create a great first impression. As most of you have seen, some of the new CCC merchandise has started to arrive in the golf shop. What we currently have is just the tip of the iceberg!. The majority of our merchandise will start arriving in the middle of September. Some vendors we will carry in the shop this season are: Adidas, Antigua, Donald Ross, Cutter & Buck, Footjoy, Greg Norman, JoFit(ladies only apparel), Nike, Oakley, Puma and Under Armour. Something new to the shop will also be TENNIS APPAREL. I have Antigua, JoFit and Under Armour scheduled for deliveries and I am hoping to get Nike. A lot of you still have shop credit that has been carried over by Concert Golf so stop by and spend some of that hard earned money. As the summer ends that means that we are about to kick-off a new season for the Women’s Golf Association (WGA). If interested in joining the WGA please feel free to contact the golf shop and we will direct you to the appropriate individual(s). The WGA golf schedule and format will be posted on the new website www. carrollwoodcc.com. The MGA season is almost complete and our next event is the Men’s Member-Member, October 4-6. The MemberMember is a Major and is open to all golf members. Please note that the sign-up deadline is September 16, which allows us enough time to order all tee gifts and prizes. We currently have over 30 teams signed up with our goal being 40 teams. We will take more than 40 teams but please remember to sign-up before the deadline.

As always happy golfing and we will see you on the course!

Women's Golf Association BY CYNTHIA COHEN, CORRESPONDING SECRETARY Suzie Patteson and Sandie Peer, Captains of Summer Nassau Team

During the hot, languid summer, the members of the Women’s Golf Association (WGA) take a break from our official season. This doesn’t mean that golf isn’t ongoing. During this time, our members play friendly games and some participate in the Carrollwood Country Club Summer Nassau League, which was won by our Club team last year. Many thanks to this year’s hardworking Nassau team captains (and WGA members), Sandie Peer and Suzie Patteson and to last season’s Club team captain (and WGA member), Nancy Chango. As of the deadline for this newsletter, the Carrollwood team was in first place. WGA President Pat Riggs and her Officers and Committee Chairs for 2013-2014

Last year's President, Nancy Williamson

Now that September is here, the WGA is busy with many activities that mark the beginning of our golf season. Under the leadership of this year’s President, Pat Riggs, and her officers and committee chairs, we look forward to many exciting and fun events. We would also like to thank last year’s President, Nancy Williamson, for her energetic leadership which created such a fun and productive year. Continuing and new members of the WGA will meet on Thursday, September 5th at 5:00 p.m. in the Emerald Room at the Club for “Sip and Socialize”. This informal event allows us to meet new members and to see each other after the summer off season. Close on the heels of this event is Opening Day for league play, which is Thursday, September 12th with the fun theme of “Girlfriends, Golf, and a little Gab.” In October, WGA Match Play will begin. Speaking of new members, WGA membership is open to all women golf members of Carrollwood Country Club who have an established handicap of 40 or less. Member dues are $55.00 for the 2013-2014 season. We have Thursday and Saturday play dates. On Thursdays, we typically have a morning shotgun start and on Saturdays, we typically have tee times. We welcome new members. If you are interested in joining our group, please contact our Membership Chair, Kathy McGlone at kathythegolfer@aol.com and/or come to the “Sip and Socialize” event on September 5th at 5:00 p.m. in the Emerald Room at the Club.

WGA Members

In addition to the WGA (which is an 18 hole golf group), there is a 9-hole women’s golf group that is open to all women golf members of Carrollwood Country Club. If you are interested in joining the 9-Hole group, please contact Linda Delapenha at lbdelapenha@gmail.com. Dues are $25.00 and the 9-hole group also has a Thursday morning shotgun start and has Opening Day on Thursday, September 12th. So, to recap the WGA September special events: September 5th at 5:00 p.m. “Sip and Socialize” in the Emerald Room at the Club. September 12th at 8:30 a.m. WGA League Opening Day, “Girlfriends, Golf, and a little Gab”

Hope to see you there!

From the Tennis & Aquatics Center BY JIM KELLY, DIRECTOR OF RECREATION & AQUATICS

Well the wet, hot summer is hopefully winding down now that the kids are back in school and all of you who took the summer off from your workout schedules can get back into the swing of things. With the change in the name of the Club to Carrollwood Country Club, there has also been a name change down here. We are no longer the Recreation Center, but are now the Tennis and Aquatics Center, or the TAC for short. I hope everyone also knows about our extended Tennis & Fitness hours. These hours are being tested on a trial basis to see if the facilities will be used as requested by our membership. Monday through Thursday we have added an hour at the end of our day and are now open until 10:00 pm. Weekend closing times of 8:00 pm will remain the same for Friday through Sundays. There are also some upcoming events that will effect pool usage and hours. As always, the Carrollwood Village Swim Team will be using the pool for practices in the afternoons and weekend mornings throughout the school year. We will also be hosting the Steinbrenner Swim Team again this fall, Monday - Thursdays, from 7:00-8:30 pm. During all practices, there are two available lap swim lanes and the designated shallow end will be also open to members. We will require the pool to be closed a few evenings during the fall months to accommodate swim meets. The following are the dates and times that the pool will be closed: Friday, September 6th - CVST Friday Night at the Races - Pool Closes at 4pm Thursday, September 12th - Steinbrenner HS vs Sickles HS - Pool Closes at 3pm Thursday, September 26th - Steinbrenner HS vs Freedom HS - Pool Closes at 3pm Friday, October 4th - CVST Friday night at the Races - Pool Closes at 4:00 pm Tuesday, October 8th - Steinbrenner HS vs Alonzo HS & Chamberlain HS Pool Closes at 3:00 pm We hope you will come out and cheer on CVST and Steinbrenner High School when they host their Home Swim Meets this fall at the Club I hope you have had a chance to check out all of the new furniture and the new cabanas at the pool. They are available for advance rental for $25.00 per 2 hour time slot beginning daily at 8:00 am ending at 8:00 pm. If a cabana is not reserved in advance, they are available on a first come first serve basis to all of our members. Increase Your Serve Speed and Decrease Double Faults by Tossing The Ball Further in Front

AUG. 26TH TO DEC. 12TH

BY CHRIS CARY, TENNIS DIRECTOR

Afternoon Junior Tennis Program Begins Group instruction in separate classes for ages 4 to 18 Monday through Thursday.

Almost every player can improve their serve by tossing the ball further out in front. Doing so gives the player two important benefits: 1. faster racket speed and 2. more vertical (up and back) control. Andy Roddick's famous blistering serve, for example, came with a ball tossed six feet in front of the base line. Most club players, on the other hand, usually toss the ball six inches in front. The difference is important to understand. The racket picks up speed and travels faster as it moves forward and chases a ball tossed way in front. A ball tossed behind or too close to the body, doesn't allow the racket and arm to reach its maximum speed.

FIG. 2

Enjoy food, drinks and music while playing mixed doubles with fellow Carrollwood Country Club members.

Because the arm is a lever, it eventually pulls down as it moves forward in the serve motion (Fig. 1 & 2). Tossing the ball further in front causes the arm to go down making the ball go down. Controlling how far in front one tosses helps to better control ones serve length which can increase serve consistency and decrease double faults. Tossing with the hand in the traditional “hand up” position (Fig. 3) usually causes the fingers to “flick” back toward the body. Players can avoid this problem by holding the ball with the toss hand in a side-ways “drink of water” position (Fig. 4). This will make it much easier to toss the ball further out and in front.

SEPTEMBER, OCTOBER & NOVEMBER Dates TBA FIG. 3

A players size, strength and serve technique will determine how far out in front the ball should be tossed. Good luck with your faster and more consistent serve. * From now till November 2013, take a private lesson on the serve from a Carrollwood Country Tennis Professional and get $10.00 off.

Chris Cary, Director of Tennis, has established a tennis committee which will meet monthly, and has plans for some really fun events, so watch for e-mail blasts, phone calls, and other communications from the Club regarding these events.
