From the President & General Manager Tom Danielson, President Robert Rankin, General Manager We would like to thank the Board and the staff for all their help and support in 2016. They have worked very hard to ensure financial growth in 2016 and also to enhance the Member experience. The Club finished the year with a positive net income of $415,000. All departments did at or better than plan, with food and beverage at a positive $63,000 and over $500,000 in outside events. Golf was $32,000 above budget in December thanks to good weather and outside play the last two weeks to make up a large deficit since January. This kind of income and revenue growth is necessary because we spent $499,000 on capital requests in 2016, including the first phase of renovating our docks, and other significant projects around the Club. We anticipate completing the renovation of the docks over the next 18 months for the safety and enjoyment of the membership while doing so in the most cost effective and efficient manner. The Board continues to update its capital plan looking at known replacements and improvement needed in all aspects of the Club. We are looking forward to another great year in 2017. The Club is forecasting net growth in all departments and we have started the year off positive with approximately $100,000 better than expected in Membership dues. Total Memberships at the end of December was 740. We have budgeted to not open the golf course to the outside in October and December in 2017, in an effort to keep the course private during the busy months. As long as the weather and golf numbers are positive we can keep that promise. We look forward to working with the Board and staff in 2017. Thank you to everyone who filled out the Member survey. We will use the results from it to help make Isla better that ever and make the club a special place for each and every Member. 12306 It is important to recognize that it takes a team to win and we cannot be any more proud to be a part of this winning team.

GirlFriends

Sandy Helmintoller, GirlFriends President “A Women’s Club with Isla Flair and a Tropical Twist” I would like to thank the GirlFriends Membership for making this a very memorable year for the 2016-2017 Board. It has been a privilege and honor for all of us to serve this wonderful organization! Wanda Hollon, 1st Vice President; Shirley Johnson, 2nd Vice President; Kathy Blazowski, Secretary; Diane Howard, Treasurer; Lisa Eskridge, New Member Coordinator; and Carol Kraynak, Membership Coordinator, have been wonderful and exceptional people to work with. We have learned to appreciate one another’s talents and contributions. Needless to say, it will be bittersweet moving off the Board and on to new things. We are continually growing our Membership and we are 2016-2017 GirlFriends Board in the process of updating our “Hot Numbers”. A special thanks to Stacy Stenholm, Susan Frazier, Teresa Sullivan, and Carol Kraynak for working on a committee making it easy for annual updates. Our Spring GirlFriends event, The White Party, was a good way to celebrate our ‘Girlfriends friendships’! If you didn’t come, you really missed a good time (view more pictures on our website at www.islagals.org)!!! Entertainment by Magician Barnaby and the music was provided by DJ Michael Planas. We danced the night away! A special ‘thank you’ to the GirlFriends who attended and supported this function! The committee for the party was chaired by Wanda Hollon, along with the following team: Lisa Eskridge, Kathy Blazowski, Bea Rahter, Marilyn Hunter, Carol Kraynak, Carol Schindler, Rosie Cody, Pam Hart and Kelly Hart. These ladies (and our honorary gentleman) did an excellent job putting together a lovely and fabulous celebration! 11954 GirlFriends will be celebrating our 14th year Birthday at our May 3rd luncheon. Be sure to attend and help ‘spotlight’ our very own Past Presidents, and give a warm welcome to our new 2017-2018 Board! For the ladies up for nomination, I wish you the best of luck and hope that you find the experience to be as worthwhile as I have! We are truly blessed to belong to an organization that supports and cares for each individual. The GirlFriends Organization is where you make good friendships and it’s the ‘family that you choose’ to have! I leave you with my final GirlFriends Quote: “It’s the friendships we meet along the way that help us appreciate the journey”

PLAY FOR HUNGER “CARING, SHARING, GIVING”

27th ANNIVERSARY Next, we want to thank the captains and crews of the boats who entertained members during Sunday’s Cruise for Hunger. Lastly we would like to recognize and thank all the volunteers who worked tirelessly from November through February, preparing for Play For Hunger weekend. We especially thank the committee chairmen, Treasurer Bill Saas, Dinner Chairs Betsy Dow, Elaine Walsh and Pam Cadigan, Commodore Bob Dollar and Joyce Dollar, Golf Chairs John and Teresa Lessak, Tennis Chairs Sandy Gelmini and Paul Margarone, Signs Chair Bob Dow and Bob Walsh, Photography Chair Charles Eanes, Program Chair Stacy Stenholm, Marketing Chairs Frank and Alex Dubisz, Charity Liaisons’ Joe and Sue Werner, Communication Chairs Dave and Sue Malmberg and 2016 PFH Chairs Dave and Janet Christein. What a terrific team! MEMBERS OF ISLA—THANK YOU FOR CARING, SHARING AND GIVING TO THE 2017 PLAY FOR HUNGER. Play for Hunger was a phenomenal success this year. ONCE AGAIN, OUR GOAL HAS BEEN MET!!! With last minute contributions, more than $150,000 was raised for the local charities, St. Petersburg Free Clinic and Daystar Life Center bringing the grand total to $1.95 million over the 27 years for these charities. Our Isla community, working together, additionally filled up 11 barrels of much needed food and personal hygiene items, as well as numerous truckloads of gently used clothing and household goods to the Daystar Thrift Shop. Thanks to each and every one who gave so generously to all areas of this event. First, we thank all the members who made generous donations directly to St. Petersburg Free Clinic and Daystar Life Center. Then we need to remember with gratitude Robert Rankin, Chef Frederic Reiser, Donna Monaco, Dino Anasri, Fred Curtis, Kevin Quay and each of their respective staffs along with Captain Richie and Captain Crispy on the docks and Rebekah Nelson at the front desk. Each of these individuals made the tournaments, boating and dining at this year’s Play for Hunger run smoothly and spectacularly.

This event enables all of ISLA members to play together in friendship as they
pass on the ISLA Wave of Caring to help those less fortunate in our community. Check out the ISLA Facebook page for more photos from the event.

The golf course certainly enjoyed a nice, warm winter. It was a dry winter, but irrigation was able to help supplement irrigation needs for much of the time. Much was accomplished over the course of the winter. We completed the lake project on holes 12, 15 and 16. We also installed artificial tee space on the practice range, hung new netting and installed new yardage markers in the fairways. We plan to continue with our efforts to stabilize and reclaim lake banks this summer. We continue to improve our methods and hope to make an impact in many areas. Besides the lakes, we also plan to make many other improvements around the Isla property including some landscaping improvements. We have two aerifications planned for this summer that will require course closures. The first is scheduled for May 30th through June 2nd. The second is scheduled for August 22nd through August 25h. While never popular, aerification is necessary to provide healthy turfgrass and quality playing conditions throughout the year. For more up to date information on what is happening in the grounds department, you can follow the Isla Del Sol Golf Course Maintenance blog at www.isladelsolgcn.blogspot.com.

2017 WGA OFFICERS President Lynne Clayton

Bonnie Henshaw

Hi all! Hope you’ve been having lots of enjoyable golfing days so far in this 2017 season. We still have some good WGA competitions left to play. Many improvements are being made to the course right along. However, I’ve been hearing that lots of us have been having trouble putting well on the greens. Would getting a new putter be the answer? Yet, it’s probably not the putter that’s the problem, but the puttee. I’ve read one theory about how it is determined where to place the hole on each green. The workman takes a bucket of golf balls to the area of the green to be used, dumps them on the green and wherever no balls stop, that’s the spot for the hole! Could it be?

FLIGHT 3: 1st place-- tie between Wanda Hollon/Pat Peterson and Shirley Johnson/ Susan Schechinger; 3rd place Tie between Ema Clark/Kim Harlow and Mary Khosh/ Mary Waller.

We have another new member to put in our roster, Kristin Billings. Welcome to the group! We’ve played two Major tournaments on which to report since our last Spotlight article. President’s Cup Winners with Head Golf Pro, Fred Curtis

MGA Update Jim Heenan

It’s been a great golf season so far this year. The weather has been cooperating and Fred Curtis and Kevin Sunderman have made every effort to provide a terrific golf environment. So, let’s get right to the tournament results so far. The Club Championship was conducted during the week of March 13th. In the Championship Flight, Brad Suetholz defeated Bill Smith 3 and 1 and was crowned club champion for the fifth consecutive year after a seesaw 36-hole match play battle. Congratulations to both Brad and Bill on conducting a great match. Brad Suetholz (It was Champions were also crowned for cold that day.) each set of tees. The final round match winners and runner ups were: White Tees – Andy Fraser over Bill Amanti Green Tees – Owen Decoursey over Dave Christein Gold Tees – Carl Hanson over Bob Carney Congratulations to all participants. This year’s Member/Member tournament contained 6 flights with a field of 48 players. The flight winners were: First Flight: Dennis Harlow/Jim Smith Second Flight: Lev LoVullo/Bill Stahlka Third Flight: Jim Heenan/Mike Riley Fourth Flight: Stan Nitkiewicz/Jim Hayward Fifth Flight: Harlow Kehoe/Jim Queen Sixth Flight: Joe Messmer/Joe Scheyd The overall winners were crowned in an alternate shot playoff of flight winners. Ray Ennis and Jim Veracco finished brilliantly in the final playoff round with Ray hitting a bold shot over the water to the 18th green and Jim canning a 20 foot putt that would still be rolling if it did not crash in for birdie to win. I’d rather be lucky than good! Ray Ennis & The Individual Eclectic Tournament was Jim Varacco conducted over two days on January 18th and 21st. The Gross and Net flight winners were: First Flight: Bill Smith (Gross), Ken Kew (Net) Second Flight: Joe DiGuglielmo (Gross), Bill Calhoun (Net) Third Flight: Bob Divis (Gross) , Joe Burton (Net) Ryder Cup events were held each month during the calendar quarter. In January, the Red Team led by Josh Flagg and Jim Heenan overcame cold, rainy and windy conditions to beat the Blue Team led by Fred Curtis and Jerry Stadt. In February, the Red Team led by Josh Flagg and Rocky Ainsworth defeated the Blue Team led by Fred Curtis and Angelo Carlucci by the score of 34.5 to 28.5. The March game was the tightest so far this year. In a field consisting of 68 players, the Red Team led by Trey Hill and Peter Mulligan defeated the Blue Team led by Fred Curtis and Angelo Carlucci by the score of 35 to 33. The team leaders’ match included some great golf. Trey Hill drove the par 4 third hole and Peter had to sink the eagle putt to overcome a birdie by Fred and Angelo. Trey and Peter won their match 2 ½ to 1 ½ despite a six-hole stretch at 7 under par by Fred and Angelo. YIKES!! Pick-Your Partner events where held on January 7th, February 4th and March 8th. After five events, the leaders are:

White Tees (Net) – Al Kurtz with 39 Points Green Tees (Net) –Bill Stahlka with 38 Points Gold Tees (Net) – Joe Kinder with 42 Points First Flight (Gross) – Angelo Carlucci with 20 Points One Pick-Your-Partner event remains in this season-long competition with the eventual winners determined by their best five of the six scores. We are getting down to the wire, boys. The last event will be held on April 8th. Fabulous prizes will be awarded to the white tee gross winner and net winners for each tee. Complete current rankings are posted on the bulletin boards outside the Pro Shop and in the men’s locker room. On February 17th, Guy Oelze got off his windsurf board long enough to ace the 7th hole. The word from the Club Accounting Department is that he ran up a record bar bill which had the Pool Bar staff Guy Ozele scrambling to replenish its inventory. Great day, Guy! In case you missed the hundreds of emails on this matter, the Annual Member/Guest Golf Tournament will be conducted from Wednesday March 29th through Saturday April 1st. If you have not participated in this tournament, you are missing the premier MGA event of the season. The tournament is flighted and affords the best opportunity to meet other members and their guests playing at your skill level. The event includes dinners and cocktail settings that promote camaraderie and the gathering to watch the flight winners playoff at the 18th green on Saturday afternoon is a hoot. This year’s tournament has likely been completed by the time this edition of the Spotlight has reached you. You should get on the waiting list for next year if you missed the event. The MGA Board would like to congratulate Kevin Sunderman on his most prestigious election to the Board of Directors of the Golf Course Superintendents Association of America and recognize Kevin and his staff for his constant attention and improvement of our golf course. Kevin’s diligence and creative problem solving are delivering remarkable playing conditions. In our previous Spotlight article, we mentioned that, armed with new information provided by GolfHits and an increasing emphasis on fairness and accuracy of handicaps, the MGA board decided to hold members accountable for posting their scores within two days of each game played. Much discussion has ensued and a more comprehensive approach to monitoring and enforcement is being contemplated. The board is discussing various approaches so please be alert for additional communication on this matter in the coming months. By the time this Spotlight edition reaches you, many of our seasonal MGA members will already be packing to head north for the summer. We will raise a glass and wish you all safe travel and a hasty return to another terrific season on our island in the sun.

From the Yacht Basin AHOY! Spring has arrived and lots of things are happening around the Yacht Basin. As of early March we have four open wet slips and zero open boat lifts. The four open slips may be helpful during our big dock reconstruction project coming up soon. Our marina currently has 76 spaces (38 boat lifts and 38 wet slips.) We also have the “T” head on the southeast corner where the Mannings will be mooring their 75 foot Viking around March 10th.

class. All that went south and back talked of a wonderful experience.

The Yacht Club recently lost a great, longtime member and friend in Mr. Jasper Jerrels. Each time he arrived at the Club he always had a new joke to tell. Sometimes they were pretty bad, but he just liked putting smiles on faces. He will be missed. Let us sail on remembering how fortunate we are to be here among great friends on a beautiful island – Isla We usually have our annual “Fins” fishing Del Sol. tournament each June. This year the Fair Winds, Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Captain Richie Commission has not yet set a date when it is legal to keep American Red Snapper. These are the fish that most of our participants have targeted in past “Fins.” When they open season on Red Snapper we will try to get a tournament organized. Our annual “Fins & Skins” – golf & fishing tournament is set for September 15th, 16th and 17th. Three vessels from our Yacht Basin have made recent voyages to Cuba. Jack Courtney aboard the motor vessel “Sheleen” traveled there on a pleasure trip in February. John and Nancy Dunn were part of the revival of the Original St. Petersburg – Habana Race as a support vessel, and Rich Henzel entered the race aboard his 42 foot sailboat “Lulabelle.” Out of 75 racers, Rich placed 32nd in line honors, and took 7th place in his cruising

From the Tennis Courts The busiest time of the season is upon us at the Isla Tennis Center. The Calcutta and WTA’s Winter Tournament started the New Year in the right direction. The Calcutta, interestingly, had none of the favorites winning. Thirty two players participated and over fifty joined us for dinner the night before the event. The Winter Tournament, formerly our member/guest, was a rousing success with 50 participants between the women and men. The Sweetheart Tournament was evenly matched with 12 teams and we had loads of fun during The Play For Hunger Tennis tournament, everyone leaving with a prize. March madness is upon us and begins with the St. Patrick’s Day Tournament on Friday, March 17th. Play begins at 9:00 am with a Snack and Chat immediately following. The Men’s, Women’s and Mixed Tournaments will be played the next week. The Women’s Championships are Monday March 20th. The Men’s Championships will be played on Tuesday March 21st and the Mixed Championships will be played on Friday March 24th. April flowers bring us WTA’s Masters Tennis Round Robin on Friday April 7th. We will be introducing “Masters” Tennis, tennis’ answer to pickleball, played on a smaller court with softer, lighter and less bouncy tennis balls. Everyone from the club is invited to watch, play begins at 9:00 am. The Grand Mess will be held the next day, Saturday April 8th, and marks the end of a busy, busy season. The Round Robin Tournament at 9:00 am will be followed with a luncheon at the Pool. All Championship prizes, as well as the George Klette Award, will be presented. The George Klette award is voted on by the tennis playing members and is given to the man and woman who have contributed the

most to the tennis program over the season. Last year’s winners were Sandy Gelmini and Chuck Blair. The world famous exchange program saw a 9:00 am starting time beginning December 1st this season. This start time will continue through the end of March. Our “sign up and show up” mixer that we have every morning will go back to an 8:30 am start time beginning in April.
