From the President & General Manager David Christein, President Robert Rankin, General Manager Dear Isla Members, I am honored to be your President for 2018 and look forward to working with our excellent Board, our outstanding Staff and you, our valued Members, in making 2018 a great year for all of us. We are off to a good start in 2018 after some cold weather in January with the Golf Course looking good and playing great, the tennis courts and fitness center full, the yacht basin getting a lot of use and our social calendar drawing high member participation. I want to thank Tom Danielson and the 2017 Board for their work with the Staff in delivering an outstanding Country Club experience for all of our members last year and for creating the base for our 2018 Board to complete a Master Plan for our Club. The Master Plan will include the Golf Course Master Plan already in progress; the long range plan for the Clubhouse, our grounds and our Tennis / Fitness Center; and the completion of a reserve study to better identify our future capital needs as a guide for future Boards. I’d also like to welcome our new members and encourage them to get involved in the wide variety of activities Isla has to offer. I hope to see you all at our Town Hall meeting on March 29 to update you on the status of the Club through the first quarter of 2018 and the plans for the rest of the year. David Christein, President

I would like to thank Tom Danielson, the 2017 Board and Staff for a record year in 2017 and I foresee us doing the same in 2018! I would like to welcome our new board Members Jay Cadigan, Ron Clayton and Steve Clark. I look forward to working with this year’s Board under the leadership of our new president David Christein. We are working hard to ensure success in every department. January was a struggle but February has been a fantastic weather month and as you know if the weather is good the numbers are good. I’m very excited to be serving my 10th year as your General Manager at Isla. I look back with pride with all the accomplishments we have made as a team over the years. I would like to thank the board and the staff for all their hard work in making Isla such a wonderful place to be a member and to work. To the right, please enjoy a picture of me with one of my favorite members. I have never heard him complain. He always greets you with a smile and is willing to serve. He will go to great lengths to make you happy. The only problem is he sometimes falls asleep in the dining room.

It truly is a good time for everyone to be able to recharge their batteries. Fall, Winter, Spring, and Summer? Did someone say Summer? We blinked and it’s that time of year again! PLAY FOR HUNGER “CARING, SHARING, GIVING”
28th ANNIVERSARY
MEMBERS OF ISLA—THANK YOU FOR CARING, SHARING AND GIVING TO THE 2018 PLAY FOR HUNGER. Play for Hunger was a phenomenal success this year. ONCE AGAIN, OUR GOAL HAS BEEN MET!!! With last minute contributions, $191,216 were raised for the local charities, St. Petersburg Free Clinic and Daystar Life Center, bringing the grand total to nearly $2.2 million over the 28 years for these charities. Our Isla community, working together, additionally filled up 12 barrels of much needed food and personal hygiene items, as well as numerous truckloads of gently used clothing and household goods to the Daystar Life Center. Thanks to each and every one who gave so generously to all areas of this event. First, we thank all the members who made generous donations directly to St. Petersburg Free Clinic and Daystar Life Center. Then we need to remember with gratitude Robert Rankin, Chef Frederic Reiser, Donna Monaco, Dino Anasri, Fred Curtis, Kevin Quay and each of their respective staffs along with Captain Richie and Captain Crispy on the docks and Rebekah Nelson at the front desk. Each of these individuals made the tournaments, boating and dining at this year’s Play for Hunger run smoothly and spectacularly.

Next, we want to thank the captains and crews of the boats who entertained members during Sunday’s Cruise for Hunger. Lastly we would like to recognize and thank all the volunteers who worked tirelessly from November through February, preparing for Play For Hunger weekend. We especially thank the committee chairmen, Treasurer Bill Saas, Dinner Chair Elaine Walsh, Commodore Dave and Sue Wiggins, Golf Chairs John and Teresa Lessak, Tennis Chairs Sandy Gelmini and Paul Margarone, Signs Chair Bob Dow, Program Chair Pam Cadigan, Marketing Chair Frank Dubisz, Charity Liaisons Joe Werner and Alex Dubisz, Communication Chairs Dave and Sue Malmberg and 2017 PFH Chairs Bob and Gen Joyner. What a terrific team! This event enables all of ISLA members to play together in friendship as they pass on the ISLA Wave of Caring to help those less fortunate in our community. Check out the ISLA Facebook page and Member Central for more photos from the event.

GirlFriends
Kathy Blazowski, GirlFriends President “A Women’s Club with Isla Flair and a Tropical Twist” I can’t believe how fast the 2017 – 2018 GirlFriends term has gone by. It seems like just yesterday when we were installed into our new offices on the Board. I would like to thank Diane Howard, 1st Vice President; Civita Schilling, 2nd Vice President; Teresa Sullivan, Treasurer; Darlene Hanson, Secretary; Carol Kraynak, Membership Coordinator; and Raquel Jones, New Member Coordinator for a wonderful year. We accomplished quite a bit by working together and keeping GirlFriends the outstanding organization that it is. If you haven’t heard already, we had a great time at the March 3rd GirlFriends Gala, “In The Mood”. The TomKats 18-piece orchestra provided fantastic music for our listening and dancing pleasure. Diane Howard did a great job with her committee members: Peggy Hoffman; Linda Foster; Rosie Cody; Jeane Ruthardt; Marilee Hastings; Katherine Albertson; Pat LeVan; and “Honorary GirlFriend” Kelly Hart. All who attended really enjoyed themselves, as evidenced by a filled dance floor!

At our May 7th luncheon, our newly elected Board will be installed and begin their new GirlFriends experience to lead us through the 2018 – 2019 year. Expect exciting luncheons, interest groups, and parties, as well as continuing effort to support those less fortunate than us. I wish our new leadership well in the coming year. 11668 We also will celebrate GirlFriends 15th Birthday at our May luncheon. Happy Birthday to us! Starting with a group of approximately 30 ladies, we have grown to an organization of 400. It is amazing, wonderful, and couldn’t have happened without all our dedicated members! As my Presidency is coming to an end, I would like to thank the Isla Community for providing the “Spotlight” to share all the new and great things that GirlFriends did this year. If you aren’t a GirlFriend yet and would like to be, it’s easy to do. See Rebekah at the front desk and she will sign you up. GirlFriends will continue to always “Reach out to all women members of Isla in the spirit of welcoming friendship”. It’s been a pleasure! Hugs, Kathy

TWILIGHT Golf
Twilight golf is starting again in May on Wednesdays at 4:00 p.m. It is a scramble format and the golf shop will make up the teams. It is great fun! If you would like to play call or sign up in the pro shop. We have reciprocals with many clubs this summer season. Members may play these courses for a cart fee. If you wish to play any of the courses, please contact the shop to schedule a tee time for you. Starting, June 1st through September 30th, the golf course will be open every day, except Tuesday, the course will be closed all day for grounds maintenance. We also will be having a 4th of July golf tournament this year. It will be an 8:00 a.m. shotgun. If you have any questions about the format, please check with the golf shop. We are continuing our 10:00 a.m. Thursday Summer Golf Clinics. We hope you can attend. If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to ask any of us in the Golf Shop and we’d be happy to help.

From the Rough
Kevin Sunderman, Golf Course Superintendent While each of the first three months of the year brought us something different in terms of weather, we still had a fairly successful season providing a quality golf course. Different weather patterns call for different maintenance practices. With January being cold and wet, February having record setting highs and March coming in cold and windy, the grounds maintenance department was constantly shifting gears to react to the weather accordingly. Things like fertilizer, irrigation and mowing heights all have to be altered depending on the weather conditions. We spent much of the winter completing cleanup of fallen trees left over from Hurricane Irma. Grinding stumps and laying sod was a common practice. As we move into spring, we will begin work on restoring the lake bank surrounding 9 green. The old wall in this area had fallen in. Similar to the work done previously on the lakes along 13, 12, 15 and 16, we will use “Geotubes” filled with sediment from the bottom of our ponds to stabilize the banks and lay sod to the water’s edge. Also, this spring we plan to cut back the ficus hedge that borders much our our golf course and separates it from the Bayway. Every few years we cut the hedge back to about 5 feet in height which allows it to fill in with greater density. A lot of our hedge was blown over by Hurricane Irma. We are hoping to also be able to straighten many of these plants instead of having to replace them. 12342 We have two aerifications planned for this summer that will require course closures. The first is scheduled for May 29th through June 1st. The second is scheduled for August 21st through August 24th. While never popular, aerification is necessary to provide healthy turfgrass and quality playing conditions throughout the year. For more up to date information on what is happening in the grounds department you can follow the Isla Del Sol Golf Course Maintenance blog at www.isladelsolgcn. blogspot.com.

Isla Men’s Golf Association 2018
MGA Update Karl Gustke
There were several wonderful MGA tournaments this winter. Perhaps because the weather, especially February, was perfect for golf. The Ryder Cup continues to be very popular and a lot of fun. January saw the blue team of Josh and Jim Smith whip up on Fred and Rich Lein. Then in February blue won again captained by Josh and Gary Harlow against red team captained by Fred and Nick Consoles. The red team finally won one in March as Fred and Owen Decoursey killed Josh and Ron Morello 34 to 26. Not close! The Member-Member is the first “major” of the season and was won by Mike Logue and Troy Andrews in a close shoot-out. Other flight winners: Member-Member Winners: Flight One: Barry Hagan & Buzzy Barnett Flight Two: Ken Kew & Nick Consoles Flight Three: Joe Kinder & Larry Nugent
Flight Four: Frank Martinelli and Dick Sierra Flight Five: Bob Walsh & Mike McParlane Flight Six: Bob Divis & Bud McDermott
The individual eclectic (huh? What’s an eclectic). It means “selecting or employing individual elements from a variety of sources” i.e. best score on each hole after two rounds. Flight One (Gross) Chuck Smith (Net) Steve Riordan
Eclectic Winners: Flight Two (Gross) Rich Stupansky (Net) Jim Queen
Flight Three (Gross) Ken Ralph (Net) Ron Morello
The club championship (the second major) was arguably one of the best ever. In absolutely perfect weather Nick Consoles took 19 holes to narrowly defeat Bob Turnbull from the gold tees. Then Owen DeCoursey demonstrated his superior short game from the green tees to beat Angelo Carlucci. From the white tees a new young member J.R. Norris finally beat Bill Amanti on the last hole of regulation. But clearly the most exciting match was between newcomer Chuck Smith and the perennial favorite and six time winner, Brad Suetholz. After 35 0f 36 holes Brad was one up and absolutely crushed his drive on 18 to about 130 yards out —FROM THE BLUE TEES! Chuck kinda missed his drive and left himself in the left rough 230 yards from the hole, all carry. Then reminiscent of Tin Cup, Chuck pured a five wood that soared over the water and landed safely on the green. They both two putted for birdies and Brad won by one. What a great match. Chuck later said that playing against Brad is like playing Alabama’s football team in a hurry up offense. Brad, a gracious winner, said he has seldom been pushed so hard. Both Chuck and Brad wanted to express their gratitude for the support and encouragement of the members that followed them. Ninety teams played in the recent Member-Guest. The biggest ever and one of the best. The temperature was a little chilly for the morning rounds, but that did not deter any enthusiasm or competition. One of the highlights was Andy Kozak’s double eagle on the 18th hole. That is a two on a par five! He flushed a seven iron from 140 yards out, one bounce and it rolled in. Congratulation on accomplishing one of the rarest things in golf. The shoot-out to determine the overall winner was well attended. There must have been 200 people around the 18th green and they got a great show. All 15 flight winners played an approach to the 18th hole. The field was cut to four then two, Bill Amanti and his lifelong friend, Joe Harding, versus Tom Cody and his grandson Jeff. Bill and Joe prevailed and donned the traditional green jacket at the banquet dinner. Everyone had a wonderful time thanks to the entire Club staff. Special thanks to Robert, Fred, Kevin, Chef Frederic, and all their hard working people. It’s another day in Paradise here at the Yacht Basin especially since spring has arrived. Many of our boaters have been out sailing, fishing or just cruising the waters around our island.

Inside the marina, the dock renovation is going well. As with any large construction project, inconveniences pop up from time to time for all, but we really appreciate everyone’s understanding of “Please excuse our mess” as we get closer to completion. In less than a year our waterfront, beaches and docks will be sparkling. The safer facility and beautification will be well worth it. Back on February 24th the dedication of Nance’s Way, our Dock Mural and our Annual Blessing of the Fleet were all squeezed into one gorgeous day. It was sunny and 79 degrees and a large crowd of members enjoyed a great day that will be remembered for a long time. Fair Winds! Captain Richie

Every year, the color trendsetters at Pantone set the ‘Color of the Year’ which was announced as “Ultra Violet” for 2018. Once the color is released it takes the forefront of design elements for events of all types. To ensure Isla Del Sol stands out in the crowd; we recently held a stylized wedding photo shoot on property which showcased the colors at work with our gorgeous setting. You’ll notice that the color trends are all around us from home décor, fashion and event design. We look forward to sharing the gorgeous professional photos from the shoot with you soon and hope that you’ll be inspired to use “Ultra Violet” in your palette this year as well. The busiest time of the season is upon us at the Isla Tennis Center. The Calcutta and WTA’s Winter Tournament started the New Year in the right direction. The Calcutta, interestingly, had none of the favorites winning. Thirty-two players participated and over fifty joined us for dinner the night before the event. Chuck Blair, auctioneer extraordinaire, helped the WTA Scholarship Fund raise enough money for another six weeks of summer tennis camp for two wonderful young kids. Many thanks to all who either purchased naming rights to each court or made donations. The Winter Tournament, formerly our member/guest, was a rousing success with ten women’s teams. The Sweetheart Tournament was evenly matched with twelve teams and we had loads of fun during The Play For Hunger Tennis tournament, everyone leaving with a prize. The Grand Mess will be held Saturday, April 7th and marks the end of a busy, busy season. The Round Robin Tournament at 9:00 am will be followed with a luncheon at the Pool. All Championship prizes, as well as the George Klette Award, will be presented. The George Klette award is voted on by the tennis playing members and is given to the man and woman who have contributed the most to the tennis program over the season. Last year’s winners were Judith Schleicher and Chuck Blair. The world famous exchange program starts at 9:00 am. The Masters Tennis Exchange is played on Wednesdays and Fridays beginning at 8:30 am. Masters Tennis is played on a smaller court with lighter tennis balls. If you ever played tennis and would like a way to play again, this is a perfect game for you. The regular 9:00 am Exchange and the Master’s Exchange are “sign up and show up” and Kevin sets up your pairings. Easy. The Ladies have a team in the South Pinellas Tennis League again and, as of this writing, had won 3 of their first 4 matches. Many thanks to Michelle Entwistle for doing such a wonderful job being captain. Thanks once again for your incredible auctioneering skills, and a fun time, Chuck Blair! Our tennis scholarship awardees, Adriana Saballos and Gabriel Poskevicius addressed tennis members expressing their gratitude for the opportunity to improve their skills and pursue their goals of a college scholarship and perhaps a tennis future. Way to go Adriana and Gabriel! Round Robin winners: Lois Farrell won first place, Pat Gousha and Carol Humphrey tied for second. February: Our member- guest tournament formally morphed to “Pick Your Partner”. Members can now pick a partner from inside or outside the club. Anne Naylor Blair and Lois Farrell provided a great luncheon, including keep sake photos, and the first ever WTA logo towel. The tournament had two flights. The Knights section was won by Judith Schleicher and Krista Newton, followed by second place Carolyn Gilbert and Shannon Nardo. Eagles winners were Wanda Hollon and Roz Bottke and second place went to Pat Gousha and Holley Schroeder. Many thanks to those who donated door prizes. March: A very busy month with the Saint Patrick’s Day Round Robin, March 17th. It is also the time of year for the tennis championships; Women’s, Monday the 19th, Men’s, Tuesday the 20th, and Mixed Doubles, Friday the 23rd. Good luck to everyone!!. Debbie and Jim Budreau and Anne and Chuck Blair have added to Isla tennis fun with the Tennis Social. The monthly events are an opportunity to play some tennis, share some food, drink and lively conversation after play.

A special note of appreciation to the club maintenance staff. New shrubbery, flowers, ground cover and cement work are a treat to the eyes. We will also have a new entrance with brick pavers shortly. The Tennis Committee is discussing some long range ideas for tennis, including a larger Tennis Center with an enhanced Wellness Center and perhaps food. The Isla Board is considering overall Isla club improvements as the 20th year anniversary of the clubhouse nears.
