From the President & General Manager Robert Rankin, General Manger We have had a very interesting summer to say the least. July was the wettest summer on record with over 22 inches of rain. August was the third wettest month on record. So far this year we had over 53 inches of rain. With that being said, you can imagine that we have some catching up to do in the golf and food and beverage area. The good news is we have the right people in the right places to make that happen. Membership on the other hand has been the bright spot during all the cloudy skies. We are over our plan by $200,000 in membership for this year as of today, and this has made up for the losses in other areas. We now have over 100 summer members and we are hoping for a 50% conversion rate as we’ve experienced in the past few years. We are very excited about the many projects completed over the summer. The clubhouse and the areas around the club look fantastic and the golf course is in pristine condition. I would like to thank the board, the membership and the staff for all their hard work during the summer months. For those of you up north heading our way, please drive safely and we look forward to seeing you for a positive end to the 2015 season.
Joe Kinder, President This summer has been a very busy one at the club with several major projects completed. Our 2015 capital expenditures budget was $256,000, but we are now projecting $360,000 to be spent in this calendar year. The additional amount available for capital projects is because we are better than planned on the membership dues and Capital assessment income, (we are $200,000 above planned). Kudos to Star Garcia, Membership Director, and our Membership/Marketing committee for an outstanding job in their marketing efforts which generates new members when many other clubs are decreasing in membership. The largest capital expenditure was $183,000 for the construction of a new wave arrestor wall that extends around the A and B docks in our yacht basin. This wall has greatly reduced the movement on our docks caused by wind or passing boats that create waves. Additional work will need to be done on the docks over the next several years due to wear and tear from the elements, without any significant capital improvements in more than a decade. Our Yacht members are an important part of our club. Currently, we have a waitlist for all our boat slips. This can generate $80,000 in departmental profits each year from slip fees and does not include their dues or food and beverage revenue. Rest assured, our Yacht members spend a lot of money for food and especially beverages. Some of the other capital expenditures have been for: installation of a new retaining wall on the parking lot side of the pond on hole # 1; new decking, tiki hut roof replacements and installation of a 17 by 20 foot canvas shade canopy at the pool bar; completion of the new Jonas computer system installation that started in 2014; remodel of the Outback refreshment building on the golf course; replacement of an A/C unit for our private dining area; and refinishing the remaining dining room chairs. It has been a hot and very rainy summer and I look forward to the return of our snowbird members and more comfortable weather.

GirlFriends “A Women’s Club with Isla Flair and a Tropical Twist” GirlFriends Board is working hard to make this a great year. Vice President, Sandy Helmintoller plans and coordinates the monthly programs; Secretary, Kathy Blazowski maintains accurate minutes and organizes the interest groups; Treasurer, Teresa Sullivan keeps an itemized account of all monies; Membership, Alex Dubisz keeps a current list of all members, welcomes new members and coordinates the luncheon sign-in function. Our summer luncheons started in June with 107 attendees. The largest June attendance prior to this year was 75. How exciting to have so many GirlFriends and guests hear the program on the History of the Don CeSar. Other summer programs were The Beauty Groupe and Hurricane Myths. In September, Congressman David Jolly was the speaker and the program was opened to all Isla members. Other enlightening programs are planned for the upcoming months, including a fashion show in November. “Midnight at the Oasis” was held on August 1 with 137 attending. Thanks to the creative ideas of Susan Frazier and Patsy MacLean, the Club was transformed for an evening of fun, live music, dancing and delicious food. “Delightful” entertainment was provided by Dino, Chef Frederic and Ken Smith. A special thanks to Tim Ansel, Kelly and Pam Hart, Marilyn Hunter, Chef Frederic, Donna, Dino, Robert and the wait staff for their help in making the evening so successful. As you can see by the listing on the sidebar, GirlFriends offers many special Interest Groups. Joining one or more of these groups is an excellent way to make and cultivate friendships through common experiences and interests. GirlFriends will be decorating the clubhouse for the holidays on Monday, November 30 at 8 a.m. That is a fun day, so plan to join us to get in the spirit of the season by helping to put up the Christmas trees and other holiday decorations. Be sure to put March 5, 2016 on your calendar: MASQUERADE—An Enchanting Evening of Isla Elegance. Start designing your creative mask to wear for the evening along with “evening attire.” Tomkats Jazz Orchestra will be playing from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. and other exciting ideas are in the planning stages. If you are interested in joining GirlFriends, please contact any of the board. We would be delighted to include you in this kind and caring group of Isla women. We do intend to “reach out to all women members in the spirit of welcoming friendship.” With a hug and a tug, Dixie President

Another busy summer has passed us by. This year we were challenged with a never-ceasing rain. While we are fortunate to have received less precipitation than other close-by golf courses, we did receive rain on 30 different days during the months of June, July and August. The rain presents us with several challenges when maintaining the golf course and grounds. The obvious challenge is that when it rains that much, it is difficult to keep up with the mowing. Cart traffic is more difficult to manage but fortunately the drainage work performed in summer of 2014 went a long way to reduce cart restrictions. Weed control is one of the biggest challenges. You can’t spray weeds when it’s raining. Rain following herbicide applications reduces the efficacy of the product. The extra water also promotes new weed seeds to germinate and start growing. Landscaping also becomes challenging to maintain. The extra water causes both the perennials and annuals to become diseased. Weed control in landscape beds also becomes more challenging. With all that being said, your grounds maintenance department continues to work hard to provide you with the best experience possible. The major summer project was repairing of the seawall along the south side of the parking lot. The old wooden #11404 wall
was in a severe state of disrepair. Like on #5 last year, we chose to replace the old wooden wall with a wall made of vinyl. The vinyl wall should last for 50+ years. As we move into winter, I will remind you that this is the time of year when the grass growth slows down, making recovery slower. It is also when our play increases. This increases the chances to experience wear and tear on the golf course. The best way to fight against this is to be proactive. Please fix not only your ballmarks but any you may come across. Please also fill any divots you encounter on the course. (Tee divots excluded as the maintenance department fills these.) Please be mindful of your golf cart traffic. Do your best to avoid weaker areas, follow all ropes and signs and definitely keep your distance from the greens. Finally, visit isladelsolgcn.blogspot.com for all the latest news concerning the golf course and grounds at Isla Del Sol. There you can even sign up to receive email notifications anytime a new post is made. It’s a useful tool to keep you informed of the latest information. Hi all! I hope the summer months have treated you and your golf game well. We have leftover news to report from the Spring activities that didn’t make it into our last newsletter. We had several “Pick Your Partner” events during the season but only one occasion to “Pick Your Team”. The winning teams of that event were: 1st Place Evelyn Garretto, Kay Nugent, Merrie Bea Stankowicz and Gulsun Kutay 2nd Place Roz Heenan, Cheryl Newmaster, Mary Waller, and Diane Spinelli 3rd Place Pat Polonus, Dee Friske, Wendy Vinsant and Gen Joyner 4th Place Sara Mulligan, Merle Kew, Marty Brokaw and Jenny Hamilton This year’s Six Woman Scramble was played with 54 women (nine teams) competing. Winning money went to these five teams in the following order: Team No. 1 Hanson Headlights 4 under par Team No. 9 Newmaster Hooters 3 under par Team No. 6 Hamilton Jugs 2 under par Team No. 8 Friske Mama Bahamas 1 under par Team No. 5. Heenan Grapefruits Even par You’ll need to use your imagination if you want to come up with the theme for the team names (for a hint, look at the photo below of a golf cart which was decorated by one of the teams). Our closing WGA meeting was held on April 21 with President, Joan Tellefsen. Three new board members were named - Pat Polonus, Wanda Hollon and Eileen Morello. It was announced that Chris Greenwalt had won the “Player of the Year” Award, which is a new competition introduced this year and involves collecting points for participation and placing in WGA golf events throughout the season. The winners of this year’s major tournaments were awarded prizes in the form of white golf jackets. Some of those winners are pictured below left to right: Mary Khosh. Jeane Ruthardt, Donna Spendio, Merrie Bea Stankowicz, Chris Greenwalt and Evelyn Garretto. There are plans in place to hold the WGA Opening Day meeting and luncheon on October 27. WGA has reserved playing times on Tuesdays, starting at 8:30 a.m, October through December and at 12:30 p.m. January through April. The 6th annual Invitational tournament is scheduled for November 2. Players may register with Simone Calhoun. Most of us spend practice time on the putting green before each round but still have trouble transferring our best putting to the actual game. One thing to remember, though, is that missing a short putt doesn’t mean you have to hit the next drive out of bounds. Here’s wishing you a good golf game and some good fun on the course this Fall.

New Ninettes Officers for the 2015-2016 season President Sandy Gelmini 1st Vice Terri Vellinga
Ninette News I hope everyone had a great summer season. Many of us have already traveled or are planning vacations as I write. Angelo and I visited Manchester, Vermont with our daughter, son-in-law and grandchildren and are planning a River Cruise on the Rhine and Mosel in September. Also in September, Joe and Irene DiGuglielmo are going to Ireland. Ron and Lu McIntyre spent 10 days in France - 3 of those days they were in Paris with their son, daughter-in-law and grandson. Then they traveled via train to the South of France where they met up with their other son, daughter-in-law and 4 grandchildren. Lu described it as a wonderful trip and mentioned seeing many sights. Martha Rothman and her daughter Stacy stayed closer to home at their newly purchased cottage in the North Georgia mountains. They enjoyed tubing, kayaking, hiking and the beautiful scenery. John and Terri Vellinga had a spectacular trip to Africa. They visited Zambia, Botswana, Robben Island, Johannesburg, Cape Town, Victoria Falls and the Cape of Good Hope. They participated in 8 safaris and viewed lions, elephants, giraffes, a leopard, rhinos and hippos. Terri wrote that the highlight of the trip was a visit to a primary school where 90 percent of the children were AIDS orphans being raised by their grandmothers. Joe and Sue Werner get the “let’s keep in touch” award. They traveled from Minnesota to Michigan to see Joe and Merrie Bea Stankowitz and Harold and Marilyn Nixon. Together they toured around Michigan spots from their past. I’m sending our best regards to Simona Satterfield and family. They are moving to Hong Kong for 2 years. Simona promises to inform us when she returns. We all hope she’ll be rejoining the Ninettes. In conclusion, welcome back Ninettes and best wishes for another great golf season. Jeanne Carlucci

From the Yacht Basin HELLO ALL, It’s mid-September and so far (knock on wood), we’ve had a calm tropical storm season. It officially began June 1st and will end on November 30, 2015. From the Tennis Courts THE BEST TIME OF THE YEAR IS ARRIVING AS WE WELCOME BACK MEMBERS WHO WERE AWAY FOR THE SUMMER. The family gets back together and it seems like people never left. Our daily exchanges go from 3-4 courts to a full house seemingly overnight. We ended last season with a string of successful events. We crowned champions in Women’s, Men’s and Mixed Doubles. The George Klette Award for service to the tennis side of the club went to Sandy Gelmini and Mike Spinelli. The fall of 2015 will be busy as ever. The daily exchanges provide thought-free tennis for all levels. Just sign up and show up and you will have a game for that day. Call the tennis pro shop for information and times. We kick off the fall with a big day on Saturday, October 24th, holding a Welcome Back Dinner and Exhibition at the Tennis Center. More information will be posted around the club as we get nearer to

the event. The following Saturday, October 31st, the Halloween Round Robin will be played. The most popular event of the season, Davis Cup, is a two day team tournament. The event kicks off with a dinner on Thursday, November 12th and is followed by play on Friday and Saturday mornings. The year ends with our always popular Holiday Mixer on Saturday, December 11th. Members of Isla Del Sol should remember we have a great Fitness Center located at the Tennis Pro Shop. All members are welcome to use the facility. It is important to note, and we need help from all members using the equipment, that due to the size of the room, guests of members are not allowed. Please respect the other members and monitor your guests. I just completed my 15th year at Isla Del Sol and it’s been a fabulous ride. The exchange program has grown and the yearly schedule has something for everyone. I hope to see more people using the courts and encourage anyone who is a member at the club to feel free to stop by and find out how you can join the fun.

Women’s Tennis Association THE WOMEN’S TENNIS ASSOCIATION AT ISLA HAS CONCLUDED ANOTHER TERRIFIC SEASON. It is with a heavy heart that I write this Spotlight article. The WTA lost one of our dear members, Diane Spinelli, and we will be honoring her memory. Judy Schleicher, Wanda Hollon, Karen Hessel, Michelle Entwistle, (not pictured: Tammy Allen, along with Kevin Quay) have been working all summer on a tribute to Diane. The WTA Diane Spinelli Youth Tennis Scholarship will provide youngsters with the opportunity to learn and succeed at tennis through a tennis camp scholarship, funded by donations. Recipients will be underprivileged students, ages 8-14, from south St. Petersburg. Applications will be distributed through out local schools and the recipients will be selected by the WTA committee. More complete information will be forthcoming via e-mail blasts and flyers. One of our other members, Carolyn Gilbert, had an amazing experience this summer. In Carolyn’s own words: “We just returned from France. We visited the town of St Etienne in the Alps where my husband was killed in a plane crash March 4, 1954. My two sons came with me. A fellow from the area, Joel Bastien, has been very interested in
Carolyn Gilbert and her two sons
the crash and is writing a book. He was asked by the town Mayor to give a lecture on the crash on August 14. A couple of months ago, Joel informed us of the upcoming memorial. Several members of the search and rescue team at the time were also in attendance. They had not been back to the site of the crash since 1954. We were the only relatives of the victims they contacted that were able to attend. What a wonderful welcome we had. They scheduled the whole day around us. It was a very moving experience-one that we will never forget.” Looking forward to another season with all the fabulous and wonderful WTA members. PLEASE MARK YOUR CALENDARS FOR
PLAY FOR HUNGER EVENTS FEBRUARY 20-23, 2016
The 26th Annual Play for Hunger at Isla del Sol is scheduled for February 20 through 23, 2016 culminating in a Celebration of Giving dinner on February 23. The members of Isla del Sol come together during this event not only to play together, but more importantly, to combine efforts to generously support two worthwhile St. Petersburg nonprofit organizations, Daystar Life Center and St. Petersburg Free Clinic, both of which provide services to the less fortunate in our community. Yes, there is Golf, Tennis, Boating and, NEW THIS YEAR, a Play Day for bridge, sliding gin, and Mahjongg-so everyone at ISLA can come and Play for Hunger. Play for Hunger is proud to be the official charity of ISLA Del Sol Yacht and Country Club members. The Donation form is on the next page and will also be available at the end of November in the office and pro shops. We hope to see members who have been generous in previous years as well as encourage newer Isla members to participate in this very worthwhile event of fun and camaraderie.
