From the President & General Manager Jude Doheny, 2016 President Robert Rankin, General Manager Dear Isla Members, 2016 sped by like a speeding train. I am truly glad I was along for the ride. It was an honor and a privilege to serve as president. What we set out to accomplish will be visible in the next few months. A special thanks to Robert Rankin, our wonderful manager, and all of the staff at Isla Del Sol Yacht & Country Club.

Enjoy this special Club with your old Joe DiGuglielmo (Vice President), Dave friends and make new friends. Remember, Wiggins, Bob Dollar (Commodore), Del Dameron, Dave Malmberg, Werner we all come with an expiration date.

Robert Rankin, General Manager I would like to thank Jude Dohney, the Board and Membership for all your help and support in 2016. The Staff has worked very hard to ensure financial growth in 2016 and also to enhance the Member experience. We are very proud to report the completion of a number of large capital improvements totaling over $420,000. We saw a profit of $63,000 in food and beverage and all our departments were at or above plan except yacht due to all the dock repairs. The golf department made a huge come back in December after being behind all year crushing budget by $32,000 in the month. At this time, the yacht basin is at 100% capacity with a waiting list. We signed up 141 Summer Members with 63 who extended through the 2016 season. We also had 58 Annual Members that joined throughout the year and 37 conversions. Total Member count for 2016 is 95 with 61 resignations bringing the net members for 2016 positive 32. On a personal note I would like to thank Jude Dohney for her nine years of service on the Isla Board. It takes a special person to sacrifice their time to the Club they love. As always, it has been a pleasure working with you over the years. I am very proud of the Board, Staff and Membership accomplishments in 2016 with a record year. I look forward to a fantastic 2017.

Star Garcia Congratulations, we did it again! 2016 proved to be one of the best years in membership, in the history of the Club. We overachieved in our membership efforts once again and we could not have done it without YOU, OUR MEMBERS! Thank you so much for all your support and Member referrals. We are truly blessed to have our Members and this beautiful Club that we like to call our home away from home. A BIG THANK YOU to our Membership and Marketing Committee for another very productive and terrific year! You all are Rock Stars in my book. I personally want to recognize our outgoing Membership Committee Chairman, Mr. Bill Rahter. Thank you for your loyalty, support and leadership. I especially want to thank his lovely wife, Bea, for her kindness and patience and for always being there to help out when needed. You two have been an inspiration to us all. Again, you all are the reasons for our success. We are pleased to announce our new Membership Committee Chair, Gen Joyner. Girlfriends Board of Directors Sandy Helmintoller, President Wanda Hollon, 1st Vice President Shirley Johnson, 2nd Vice President Kathy Blazowski, Secretary Diane Howard, Treasurer Carol Kraynak, Membership Coordinator Lisa Eskridge, New Member Coordinator
GirlFriends “A Women’s Club with Isla Flair and a Tropical Twist” It is hard to believe we are going into 2017 already. Where did this year go?! The Board (Wanda Hollon, 1st VP; Shirley Johnson, 2nd VP, Kathy Blazowski, Secretary; Diane Howard, Treasurer; Lisa Eskridge, New Member Coordinator; Carol Kraynak, Membership Coordinator and myself) hope you had a wonderful Christmas, Hanukkah, and a Happy New Year! We have sadly experienced the loss of our Past President, Mimi Lima. A donation from all the Past Presidents and myself was presented to CASA (Community Action Stops Abuse) and they reciprocated by naming a room in her honor. It is located right next to the room already named for GirlFriends. The GirlFriends met our $4000 yearly goal, which helped complete our three year $10,000 commitment to CASA. This is outstanding and a special ‘thanks’ goes to all who contributed towards the 50/50! Kathy Blazowski, Lisa Eskridge and Rita Wormold presented the $4000 check, plus additional monetary donations and ‘wish list’ gifts, to CASA on December 16th. What a great way to end the year supporting a worthy cause! Our December 7th luncheon was hosted by the Board and celebrated the “Men of Isla” calendars. The “models” showed off their outfits and gave us a floor show we will probably never forget! If you haven’t purchased your calendars yet, we will still have them available through January. The profits (after paying for the calendars) will go towards a birthday gift for the GirlFriends Membership! 11441 Thank you to all the wonderful volunteers who helped decorate and remove decorations for Christmas and Hanukkah! You are what helps make the GirlFriends organization what it is! Thanks to Robert Rankin for making GirlFriends feel so appreciated!

I’m beginning to think warm fall weather is the new norm. With many days in the 80s the grass has continued to actively grow into the New Year. However, we have been very fortunate to maintain such a healthy stand of grass as we experienced only 0.4” of rain from October 6th to December 31st. I have friends in Arizona who received more rainfall than that! As the calendar turns to January I know that we will have some “normal” winter weather in our future. This means the temperatures will cool and grass growth will slow. This coincides with the peak of our golfing season. A lot of wear and tear by golfers and little recovery growth in winter means we must be proactive in managing traffic and wear of our golf course. This is the time of year I keep my fingers crossed for warm, sunny weather. I prefer warmer weather and so does the grass. Unfortunately, I have learned you can’t control the weather. What we can control is how we take care of the golf course. This starts with traffic control. Due to cooler weather and shorter days, the grass grows with less vigor in the wintertime reducing its ability to withstand stresses placed by cart and foot traffic. Areas, such as walk-ups to tees and greens, experience faster wear due to the concentration of traffic on these locations. In attempt to provide the best conditions possible, we use ropes and stakes to guide golfers to the best spots for travel. Please follow all traffic guides knowing that it benefits the condition of your golf course.
Our major in-house project of 2016 was remediation of the shoreline of the lake on holes 12, 15 and 16. While this was a big undertaking, the results have been fantastic. In many spots we were able to reclaim 15 feet of ground that had previously eroded away! The most significant impact can be seen on #16 fairway where we were able to widen the fairway by 7 to 10 yards and gain an additional 15 feet of land to the left of the fairway. Using the “Geotubes” we should feel confident knowing they will help prevent erosion well into the future. We will continue this work on other lakes in 2017. As always, you are asked to fill divots and repair ballmarks. Even if the divot or ballmark isn’t yours, you should still repair it. If everyone makes an effort, we will all be rewarded. 12259 Finally, visit isladelsolgcn.blogspot.com for all the latest news concerning the golf course and grounds at Isla Del Sol. There you can even sign up to receive email notifications anytime a new post is made. It’s a useful tool to keep you informed of the latest information.

Happy New Year! Now that we are past the holiday rush, we can start concentrating on our golf again. If your game hasn’t been so hot lately, don’t feel too bad...Most of us agree the course is playing tougher and our handicaps are going up. At our opening meeting our President, Lynne, emphasized that our theme should be “PLAY FAIR” and listed some new policies which have been put in place to help us follow that doctrine on our Tuesday play days. Each foursome member should agree on the accuracy of the scores for that day and then she must post her own score on that same day in the handicap system. Failure to do so will cause her to forfeit any winnings for that event and to lose her opportunity to compete in the next WGA play day event. No gimme putts will be allowed on the play days.
The first of our five Major tournaments of the season, the Eclectic, was played in November. Jean Venable was the Overall Champion. Other winners were:
2nd Vice (Tournament Chair) Mary Waller
FLIGHT 1: 1st place--Deb Kelaher; 2nd-Chris Greenwalt; 3rd--Kate De Coursey; 4th--Marty Brokaw; 5th--Ellen Koppelman
Treasuer Judy Willis
News from summer play at the Heathers Club in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan has been reported. Sharon Marciniak won the Sr. Women’s and Chris Greenwalt won the Women’s championships. Congratulations on such good play!
Sharpen up your pencils ladies because a look at our schedule shows we have lots of regular Tuesday play days ahead for which to sign up including Major tournaments and the Club Championship. After that we have our much anticipated Member-Guest day on March 23rd. The committees are already meeting to fine tune this extravagant event which is probably the finest of all our efforts at good golf, fine food, decor and camaraderie.
We are glad to have several new members in our WGA. Welcome to Bette DeGeorge, Linda Hunerlach, Judy Wells, Candace Bondy, Shana Koler, Sandra Barnes, Nancy Vecchiarelli, Catherine Cann and Maureen Viele. Our members have recently shared their generosity in two charity events. The theme at the MVP (Mamography Voucher Program) event was “Think Pink”. You may have noticed a number of pink flamingo statues around the course that day. The effort raised over $5000. “Gift a Child”, our annual Christmas charity, provided gifts for 16 children from 5 families in need of help. The 2016 Invitational Tournament was held on Halloween and involved 120 players. Isla women plus women from more than 20 clubs competed. Patti Gabri and her three guests scored best in the Low Gross category and a foursome from Stonybrook/ Bradenton won Low Net honors. There was a colorful display of Halloween costumes and decorated carts brightening up the course on that day.

MGA Update We wish to welcome back all our Members from the “great white north”. We are looking forward to a great 2017 with a full schedule of events. (See below.) The new board was installed at the November 9, 2016 MGA board meeting. Tom Danielson was named President, Bob Walsh, Vice President and Tournament Chairman, Karl Gustke Secretary, Owen DeCoursey Treasurer, Bob Dow Social Chairman and Jim Heenan Information Support Chairman. Please feel free to reach out to any board member with any thoughts or questions that arise during the new season. The November meeting included an introduction to the GolfHITS system which merges our daily tee sheets with the GHIN Handicap System and includes reporting features that allow for easy identification of un-posted golf scores. Exception Reports can now be run that identify unposted scores. Armed with this new system, the board decided that each member should be held accountable for posting their scores into the GHIN Handicap System within two days after any game played. Un-posted scores now appear on these reports and they will be used to notify members of missing scores. Note that tournament scores (Pick Your Partner, First Round of the Eclectic and the Club Championship only) are posted by the Pro Shop. Ryder Cup events were held in November and December. Seventy-two members participated In the two-day November event when the Blue team led by Fred Curtis and Karl Gustke pasted the Red team led by Trey Hill and Tom Danielson by the score of 64.5 to 43.5. Sixty
members participated in the December event which was won by the Blue team led by Josh Flagg and Dennis Harlow over the Red team led by Fred Curtis and Gary Harlow by a score of 34.5 to 25.5. Pick-Your Partner events where held on November 9th and December 14th. After two completed events, the leaders are: White Tees (Net) – Al Kurtz with 16 points Green Tees (Net) – Frank Dubisz and Bill Stahlka with 18 points each Gold Tees (Net) – Joe Kinder with 16 points First Flight (Gross) – Bill Smith, Bill Stahlka, Ken Kew and Steve Riordon with 10 points each Complete rankings are posted on bulletin boards outside the Pro Shop and in the men’s locker room. There are four events remaining in this season-long competition with the eventual winners determined by their best five of the six scores. Choose your last four partners wisely. Barry Hagan aced the par 3 7th hole on December 10th. He used a six-iron to knock in a Callaway Soccer Ball. It’s Barry’s fourth career hole-in-one and, striking an optimistic tone, he said it’s his first at Isla Del Sol. Congratulations Barry and good luck on getting that next one here at Isla. Jim Heenan

On November 1 the Ninettes were back in full “swing” with their first scramble of the season. It was wonderful to see the familiar faces along with new members who we are delighted to welcome into our Ninette family. Our scramble was also the Mammography Voucher Program day. Over $4,000.00 was raised for this great program. Thank you and congratulations to all who participated. Sandy Gelmini won closest to the pin in the MVP event. Well done Sandy! Fred went over the changes made and some still in progress on the course. He also presented the new score card and reviewed the rules on the back of the card. From the Yacht Basin AHOY! AND HAPPY NEW YEAR! It was another fun one down at the Yacht Basin. We were lucky again with decent weather for the Lighted Boat Parade party back in December. Thanks to all for understanding as we encouraged more beach & pool deck parade watching due mainly to tripping hazard concerns with rotten dock boards. For next year’s party, things will be a whole lot different. A five phase plan for the total re-build of the marina is slated to start this spring. This project will include all new decking, stringers, caps, cross braces and pilings. Phase 1 of this project is the main dock walk-out from the parking lot all the way out to the north end between A & B docks. This is where most foot traffic occurs and the beginning section will be much more smooth and attractive for our weddings too. Phase 2, likely to start around July, is still to be determined. Hopefully Mother Nature is kind and we’ll have zero damage from winter storms. If this were to happen, attention would need to be directed there for Phase 2. The Flag committee and the Board will look at this as we roll through the spring season. When all is said and done, within two years, the entire dock system should be completely new, much prettier and most importantly safer for our Members and their families.

Women’s Tennis Association 2017. Wow. Time passing so quickly blows one’s mind…but fear not a great tennis season is before us. Here’s just a few of the events to look forward to: January 4 the WTA were hosts for the Girlfriends luncheon. We invited Kim Gilcrist Health and Wellness director for the Jim and Heather Gills YMCA to address the Girlfriends. Her topic, “Fitness for All Ages.” We got to hear about the simple things we can do to be healthier and try some basic exercises demonstrated by WTA members Debbie Budreau, Michele Entwistle, Wanda Hollon, and Judith Schleicher. Congratulations to Debbie and her committee, Michele, Karen Hessel, Wanda and Joan Wulfson. January 6, following tennis play the members were treated to a welcome back Snack and Chat as we celebrated the newly regenerated tennis courts. Kudos to Kevin Quay and crew for a great job. Construction and tennis play at the same time…and it worked!! January 13, WTA Round Robin and lunch, prizes and meeting following play. We have voted to continue the WTA Match Point Tennis Scholarship and will support our
current awardees Adriana 11 and Gabby 14 because of their dedication, and hard work. January 19, Calcutta dinner and “Brand Your Court” kick off to fund our WTA Match Point Scholarship. The silent and live auctions will begin at 6:30. Winning bidders will have court naming rights for a year. A plaque with your name or clever phrase will be placed in front of your court. So pick out your court while supporting a good cause, helping deserving kids through tennis to a brighter future. January 20, 21, Calcutta team play 9 a.m. February 3, WTA Women’s and Men’s Winter Tournament will begin at 9 a.m. with lunch at 11:30 and a second session at 1 p.m. Marguerite Elkins will chair the women’s event while Chuck Blair heads up the men.
