From the President & General Manager Tom Danielson, President Robert Rankin, General Manager Dear Isla Members, Each year seems to go by a little quicker, but 2017 will hold a special place in my heart. It was an honor and a privilege to serve as president in 2017, and to serve on the board for the past three years. Special thanks to Robert Rankin and all of the staff at Isla Del Sol Yacht & Country Club, and to my fellow board members, who along with our staff, accomplished a great deal in 2017. A special thanks to the outgoing board members Joe DiGuglielmo, who chaired our Greens and Grounds committee the past three years, and Bob Dollar, our Commodore for the past three years. As the three of us depart the board, please welcome new board members Jay Cadigan, Steve Clark, and Ron Clayton. By the time you read this, David Christein will be the 2018 President. I wish him and his Board nothing but success. Enjoy this special Club and all it offers. Tom Danielson, President

I would like to thank Tom Danielson, the Board and Membership for all your help and support in 2017. The staff has worked very hard to ensure financial growth in 2017 and also to enhance the Member experience. In 2017, we enjoyed near perfect weather through much of 2017 until Hurricane Irma came to town. While Hurricane Irma disrupted the month of September, her uninvited presence did very little to dampen the attitude and spirit of staff and members alike. With the return of good weather in October, we finished the year ahead of budget, including the cost of the Hurricane. Our forecasted 2017 financial performance will equal or exceed the excellent financial performance we had in 2016, and for the second year in a row produce net income in excess of $400,000 and cash flow from operations in excess of $900,000. We are very proud to report the completion of a number of large capital improvements totaling over $1,200,000. Our capital spending for 2017 includes the completion of Phases 1, 2 and 3 of the Dock renovation; the repair of the Wave Arrestor Wall that did it’s job and limited damage to the dock during the hurricane; Clubhouse Entrance, Lobbies and Bathroom remodeling and Nance’s Way with Phase 4 lighting on the north side of the Clubhouse; Pool Bar improvements including New Furniture, Weather Curtains, Tike Hut repair and Bathroom remodeling; the continuation of the Lake Bank Remediation on the Golf Course; Tennis Facility Landscaping improvement; and added capacity Kitchen equipment. It had been a pleasure working with you over the years. I am very proud of the board, staff and membership accomplishments in 2017 with a record year. I look forward to a fantastic 2018. GirlFriends

Kathy Blazowski, GirlFriends President “A Women’s Club with Isla Flair and a Tropical Twist” Welcome to 2018! The GirlFriends Board hopes that everyone had a wonderful and safe Holiday. GirlFriends is looking forward to a great year and we have our luncheon presentations ready for you. We are sure that you will enjoy our exciting programs covering many different topics. In January we had our own Civita Schilling present a wonderful musical program with a talented group of her friends that knocked our socks off! In other luncheon programs you will: learn how to choose supplements; gather information about our favorite animal, the migrating turtles; and be enlightened about the Pinellas County Canine Officer program. It will all end in May with the GirlFriends 15th Birthday Party and the installation of our new officers for the 2018-2019 year. Wow! This year has gone by in a flash. 11515 Our December luncheon truly put us all in the Holiday spirit. We had the “Island Notes” singing group perform Holiday songs and help GirlFriends with a sing-a-long which was lots of fun. CASA was very Pictured from left to right: Rita Wormold, excited with all the donations Diane Howard, and a CASA representative that GirlFriends collected at our December luncheon. with all the GirlFriends donations Diane Howard along with Rita Wormold delivered the gifts to the CASA offices in time for them to hand them out to those in need. Continuing in the Holiday spirit, a big “Thank You” to all our volunteers who helped decorate the club for the Holidays. It looked beautiful! There is always a lot of fun and camaraderie when the “elves” get together to make things sparkle. Our Spring Gala will be held on Saturday, March 3rd when we will have the 18-piece Tom Kats Jazz Orchestra to take us “In The Mood”. It should be a fun evening with great music, food, and dancing. Hope to see you all there. We wish everyone a Happy and Healthy 2018! Kathy Blazowski President

ISLA DEL SOL SETS A RECORD FOR SOWF!

Congratulations to the members, our guests and suppliers in making the 7th Annual Special Operations Warrior Foundation (SOWF) Golf Tournament a record-breaking success! We raised $221,000 this year, which is the highest for any SOWF golf tournament in the country! One special contributor committed $100,000 per year for the next 10 years! This brings our 7-year total to over $720,000. Congratulations. As you know, this money goes to assist the dependents of fallen special operations warriors through full college scholarships and immediate cash assistance. This was the biggest turnout we’ve had with 56 teams taking part in morning and afternoon shotgun starts. The first place teams in each category were as follows: Overall Winners: John Brandt/Jack Schlegel/Kyle Barlow/Justin Foster Men’s Division: Rocky Ainsworth/Kevin Reed/Ted Koufas/ Steve O’Brien Women’s Division: Kathy Ellis/Linda Carricato/Donna Daugherty/Dawn LaVigne Mixed Division: Karl Gustke/Melba Gustke/Vici Brown/Tom Westervelt The emcee for the evening was Dick Crippen, Special Advisor to the Tampa Bay Rays. Our guest speaker was Emily Loey, the surviving spouse of Captain John Tinsley. Captain Tinsley was killed in action in Afghanistan on August 12, 2009. He was assigned to the 7th Special Forces Group. Thanks to SOWF, their daughter, Isabella, will be able to attend the college or university of her choice without the burden of student loans. Special thanks to the SOWF Committee and volunteer, members who volunteered their time and donated money and raffle/ auction items. Also, kudos to Robert and his staff for pulling off another flawless event.

Kevin Sunderman, Golf Course Superintendent Winter is the busiest time of year for play on the golf course. Ironically, this happens as the grass grows at its slowest pace. Due to the slower growth, golfers have to be extra mindful of how they care for the course. It’s important that you are aware of cart traffic. Golf carts do more damage than anything else. While you might not think about it, the tires are constantly tearing at the grass blades as they travel down the fairway. Excessive cart traffic in one area will cause the turf to thin. We don’t notice this as much during the warmer months when the grass recovers quickly, but in the cooler months the wear can become unsightly and unplayable. Cart traffic becomes most concentrated around the green. Please keep this in mind and exit to the cartpath as soon as possible. Also, even if you have a blue flag, NEVER drive between a green and bunker. There is little space in these areas which amplifies any wear caused by carts. In many cases, this is also unsafe. Don’t forget to fill your divots. We don’t replace divots in the south like you would up north. The grass grows differently and will not survive if a divot is replaced. Instead fill a divot with sand level with the ground. We only need to put in enough sand to be even with the soil level. Overfilling a divot to grass height will result in wasting sand and dulling mower blades. Ballmarks become more prevalent in the winter months. There are more rounds being played and the grass grows slower which translates to more ballmarks and slower recovery. Whether or not you hit a green with your approach shot, you should always be fixing ballmarks. Make it a goal to fix 3 ballmarks on every green each time you play. That means you should always fix at least 54 ballmarks per round of golf. If everyone does this, our ballmark problem should decrease. Don’t “Pop up” the soil with your tool or tee but rather, gently pull the grass back to the center of the ballmark without tearing. For more up to date information and photos on what is happening in the grounds department you can follow the Isla Del Sol Golf Course Maintenance blog at www.isladelsolgcn.blogspot.com.

WGA 18 Holers

2018 WGA OFFICERS President Lynne Clayton

Bonnie Henshaw

1st Vice Mary Waller

Hello again. Here we are starting Isla’s 2017-18 Golf Season with the WGA. Welcome to two new members, Sylvie Blais and Gordie Jamieson. This makes a total of 80 women in our 18-Hole players group. We invited members from twenty other clubs to play in our annual Invitational tournament in October. 144 women showed up for the fun.

2nd Vice (Tournament Chair) Darlene Hanson

Here’s a list of the winners of the Eclectic, the first of our Major tournaments. We love the Eclectic because we get to throw out the poorest score on a hole if we can better it on the second day of play. The Overall 1st Place winner was Wanda Hollon. Others who got payback were:

Treasuer Judy Willis

Secretary Pat Polonous

Members at Large Eileen Morello Pam Harris

Flight 1 - 1st Place Tie between Kay Nugent and Betsy Soma 3rd Place: Marty Brokaw 4th Place: Merrie Bea Stankowicz Flight 2 - 1st Place: Pat Polonus 2nd Place Tie between Carol Forcier and Linda Hunerlach 4th Place: Kim Harlow Flight 3 - 1st Place: Shirley Johnson 2nd Place Tie between Regina Krystek and Sharon Marciniak 4th Place: Mary Lou O’Brien A new competition on our schedule for this season will be the Solheim Cup, similar to the men’s Ryder Cup. The foursomes will be set up by the Pro Shop. Each foursome will be divided into two teams...Reds vs. Blues. Each 18 hole round will contain formats of six holes each: Scramble (1- 6); Best Ball (7 - 12); and Match Play (13 - 18). Early in the season we played a new set up of play for a pick-your-team type Wanda Hollon Overall Winner of event, the Jack and Jill, in which one male Eclectic Tournament was invited to be a member in each foursome. Comments indicate that it was an extra fun outing for all. This season we will have a new approach to the Club championship tournament. It will include two divisions: a Compete division for those vying for the title of Club Champion to be played over a three-day match play tournament; and a non-compete division with a format of two Best Ball team play for those who choose to not play all three days. Other major tournaments coming up will be the President’s Cup (cumulative low net format) and the Member/Member (Stableford format). So, there will be lots of scores to be reported in our next issues. 12403 We have two charity projects. One was the “Gift a Child” in December in which 16 WGA shoppers bought Christmas gifts for 16 children from four families whose names were gathered from a welfare list. Funds for this project were provided from a portion of our WGA dues and other donations from our members. Our other project is the MVP tournament in which the entry fees and other donations are used to support the Mammography Voucher Program. The theme for the Member/Guest day will be “Take Me Out to the Ball Game.” It is scheduled for March 22 with a practice round on March 21. With all these golfing opportunities coming up, I bet the pros will be super busy giving us lessons. What a beating the practice range will be taking!! On the lighter side, Dean Martin once said, “If you drink, don’t drive....don’t even putt!” Bye for now.

MGA Update Karl Gustke

It looks like all the welcome back events are over and the MGA is in “full swing” pun intended. The first event of the season was the two-day Ryder Cup led by the Red team of Rocky Ainsworth and Josh Flagg. Tom Danielson and Fred Curtis captained the Blue team. The Blues led after the first day by a wide margin and the Red guys were unable to make up the deficit. Congratulations to the Blues. The first Pick Your Partner (PYP) was held on November 11th, a beautiful fall day. Some great golf was played by the 96 golfers (and some lousy too) but the winners were very deserving. The third flight winners were Kelly Hart and Bob Henshaw with a net 58. Good shooting guys. Second flight led by Gerry Sullivan and Mike Hernandez show super net of 52, WOW! The first flight Gross winners of Rocky Ainsworth and Chuck Smith played great together. Karl Gustke and Kim Thompson ham and egged all morning to win the 1st Flight Net. Congratulations to all! The second Ryder Cup was December 2nd captained by the Smith brothers, Bill and Chuck (no relations and not cough drop moguls). Bill played with Fred Curtis and represented the Blue team while Chuck played with Josh Flagg as the Red Team. The match was closely contested among the 56 golfers, with the Blue team prevailing by 5 shots; congratulations Fred and Bill Smith in keeping the Blue team perfect so far this year. The second Pick Your Partner (PYP) was held on December 13th. We had 84 golfers compete in the second event of the year on a chilly Wednesday morning. Bill and Chuck Smith played as partners and were first flight gross winners with a score of 70. Low net winners in each flight were Terry Gilpin and Joe Kinder with a net 54 in the first flight, Mike McParlane and Dan Chin with a net 55 in the second flight, and Mike Fernandez and Bob Henshaw with a net 59 in the third flight. Congratulations to all. Local rule on declaring your tees for the season Isla’s Men’s Golf Association (MGA) implemented a local rule several years ago which stated that for all Pick Your Partner and other MGA events, you must commit to which tee you will play through out the season, and play that tee for all events. As communicated in an email to all MGA golfers dated December 5, 2017, the policy was modified to only restrict golfers who can play the gold tees, based on age plus handicap equal to 90, and entertain on a case-by-case basis anyone who does not qualify, but believes they should play the gold tees for medical or other reasons. Presently approximately 55% of our membership qualifies to play the gold tees. Under our revised local rule which previously restricted golfers who could play the green tees, players who do not qualify for the gold tees can now play blue, white or green tees, and commit to playing that tee the remainder of the year. The pro shop will determine the players handicap at the tee selected to be played based on the player’s handicap index, and then will add an additional 4 strokes for blue tee players, 2 shots for white tee players and 1 shot for green tee players, and gold tee players will play at their calculated handicap. This policy is in line with Florida Golf Association who has advocated that golfers should be able to play it forward on tee balls when they can no longer hit the ball a sufficient distance to reach greens in regulation. They believe that course ratings and slope will adjust the player’s handicap appropriately when players play the forward tees, and that USGA section 3.5 handicap rules provide for appropriate adjustments when tournaments are played at different tees, by either adding stroke(s) to the players who play the back tees for the difference in course rating, or to subtract the difference in course rating from the forward tees. Thanks to all for your participation and support of the MGA. We look forward to a great season on our island paradise.

From the Yacht Basin AHOY!

Back in 1979 work began building Isla Del Sol Yacht and Country Club’s Yacht Basin. In the early 1980s it was complete and ready for operation. We are super excited that by the end of this year the entire dock structures will have been replaced and brand new! We’ll also have a wave breaking wall that is nearly twice as strong as what we had before. The marina will be sturdier, safer and should stay full of boats for years to come. Captain Bob Dollar was our Commodore for 2015-2017. Thank you Captain Bob for your service and for bringing great things to Isla. A nice new addition to the Club is the Yacht Basin entrance mural. It was designed and painted by artist David M. Rothman. It took him about 3 weeks to complete and a clear coat sealant was applied to it at the end. This protective sealant will ensure the brightness of the mural for many years. Donations from several boaters paid for the mural which blends in nicely with our beautiful beach and waterfront.

Captain Richie Fowler Bob Joyner Mike Logue Robert Rankin Mark Squires

Thank you to Charles Eanes for taking photos of the mural! Check out our Club’s Facebook page to see pictures of the whole process.

Weather conditions for our Santa’s Boat Yard – Christmas dock party were less than ideal. A cold front bringing winds with gusts up to 30 mph made it tough. However, a large number of Isla members rallied, made adjustments and a great time was had by all. A huge thanks to all who helped decorate the club house, the docks and especially the boat owners for doing the best they could despite foul weather. Also, a special thank you goes out to Lina Kunz for organizing…then, re-organizing to make the night happen. Congratulations to the Christmas decorated boat winners! Vessel on a Lift 1st place- “Weekends Aweigh”- (Bakers) 2nd place- “Just Sayin’”- (Grimes)

Women’s Tennis Association The tennis fun is just beginning, the exchange, monthly evening tennis socials (second Thursday) and snacks with lots of chatting in the new year. The “Brand Your Court II” kick off is January 18 at the Calcutta dinner. All 9 courts will be auctioned off once again to fund the WTA Isla Del Sol youth tennis scholarship. Chuck Blair will preside over the silent and live auctions starting at 6:30. Winning bidders have naming rights for a year. A plaque with your name/names or a clever phrase will be placed on YOUR court. So, pick out your court while supporting a good cause and helping deserving kids through tennis to a brighter future.

January 18, 6:30 pm, Calcutta and Youth Tennis Scholarship dinner

February 2nd may be Ground Hog Day in the rest of the country, but who cares in Florida…winter dare not show it’s face here anyway! At Isla, it’s the WTA Winter Tournament-Member Guest. The day starts at 9 with one of Kevin Quay’s crafty team round robins with cash prizes. Luncheon follows at 11:30 in the Isla Del Sol dining room. Event chairs Anne Blair, and Lois Farrell are working with Chef Frederick on a delightful menu. So, grab your cell phone, call a tennis buddy, or let us help you find one for you.

January 19 & 20, 9:00 am, Calcutta play

In other news, the WTA is pursuing a 501©3 not for profit status. The IRS status will allow a tax deduction for scholarship contributions.

February 2, WTA Women’s and Men’s Member Guest

Congratulations to our fall WTA round robin winners. In October, Debbie Budreau won first place, while, Lois Farrell, Sandy Hale and Karen Hessel shared the second place spot. The November round robin found Wanda Hollon in the top spot and Pat Gousha and Marguerite Elkins tied for second.

Brand new tables, chairs and umbrellas! We are also enjoying the new landscaping that is almost completed, we are still awaiting some additional pavers and paving. New courts last year, beautification this year, what could be better? (Definitely my back hand, but that will take a whole column to discuss!)
