Dear Isla Members, After a very rainy spring and a tropical storm in June, we have been blessed so far this July with less rain than 2015. We have also seen record heat waves in July which have affected golf play, but have been good for pool activity and the air conditioned indoor events. With that said, we are ahead of plan year-to-date in most areas except golf play. As of June’s financial report, golf is behind by $38,500, but the club overall is ahead of plan by $16,700, mainly due to strong finishes in food and beverage and membership for the first half of the year. We expect food and beverage and membership to trend strongly through the rest of the year. Currently, with 122 summer members, and 2 more months to go, we should finish way over the prior year. We’re trending to hit $500,000 in outside events for 2016. Hats off to the Board, Committees, and Staff for the positive outcome so far in 2016. Our yacht basin, once again, has a waitlist for the boat

slips. The tennis camps are full and the golf course is in fantastic shape. Phase one of our dock capital project is nearly complete on D dock. If you’ve not seen the new dock please feel free to walk out and take a look. It looks great! Thank you so much for allowing us to work as your President and General Manager. It’s a pleasure to be a part of such a big family and a wonderful club.

summer Members, with 2 ½ more months to go! We are tracking to have one of the most successful summers of all time. Summer Memberships serve as a way to introduce our Club to younger families and business executives, and to expose our Club to year-round residents in the area. The ultimate goal of all of the marketing actions is to effectively communicate the Club’s “unique selling proposition” to our

For those of you who would like to be added to our weekly Clube e-blast list please email Rebekah at the front desk (frontdesk@idsycc.com), and include your email information and she will promptly add you to our list. MISSION STATEMENT The Membership Committee is a major contributor in helping the Club shape a successful and satisfied membership. The Committee is comprised of supportive Club Members representing various organizations and interests in the Club. identified “target markets,” and build trust through our social media avenues. Thank you to our members who routinely welcome these summer members to join in their tennis, golf, and social groups; it helps create a stronger foundation for everyone. Please continue to actively promote our club to your friends and family, whether here in Florida or back home. YOU, our members, are our most effective supporters in the membership enrollment process. Thank you again for your referrals. When I reflect upon our club, it reminds me of the sitcom Cheers, (it’s where everyone knows your name!) We are truly blessed to have such a beautiful Isla Family. The Membership and Marketing Committee are working very hard to create better ways to keep you informed of what’s happening at the club. We hope you’ve seen the new DYK (Did You Know) email blasts? They’re short but to the point and very informative. Hats off to Brian Young, Marketing Chairman, and the Board for thinking outside the box on this one. Good job! Fall is just around the corner and I don’t know about you, but I’m so looking forward to cooler weather and seeing you all at the Club soon! Please help me welcome all the New Members listed on the next page! Warmest regards, Star

July 31, 2016 On behalf of our Tournament Committee, we would like to offer you the opportunity to become a sponsor for our November 3rd, 2016 Charity Golf Tournament benefiting Special Operations Warrior Foundation (SOWF). As a result of the generosity of local businesses, our members and our suppliers, we raised almost $400,000 during the first five years! Since 1980, the Special Operations Warrior Foundation’s programs have supported America’s Army, Navy, Air Force and Marine Corps special operations personnel. Their programs provide full college grants for the surviving children’s college educations and immediate financial assistance to the families of severely wounded special operations warriors. Currently, there are 173 children attending college at universities across the country because of generous people like you. They have 1,146 children in their program and 279 of the children have graduated with their college degrees. The Foundation is based in Tampa and has been given a four-star rating by Charity Navigator, a leading nonprofit watchdog group, for the past ten years. As part of our Golf Tournament, we would like to invite you to be a tournament sponsor or donate a gift or gift certificate to be used as a prize at our tournament. If you can provide a certificate for services we would be pleased to recognize your support at the tournament. The attached information provides the details of the tournament. This is a great opportunity to help make a difference in the lives of some very special people. All donations are tax deductible, as allowed by law. The SOWF Tax ID number is 52-1183585. If you would like to be a sponsor at this event you can send your donation:

Payable to: SOWF Mail to: Isla del Sol Yacht & Country Club (Attention: Mike Meza, Controller) 6000 Sun Blvd St Petersburg, FL 33715

GirlFriends “A Women’s Club with Isla Flair and a Tropical Twist” What an exciting and eventful year for our organization. Thanks to the 20152016 Board: Sandy Helmintoller, Kathy Blazowski, Teresa Sullivan and Alex Dubisz. They were extremely talented and creative women. I personally look forward to continuing the friendships that were formed by our board—we worked and played hard!! Ladies, you were/are a special group!! Thanks also to the chairs of our many Interest Groups and the Special Chairs (they are listed on the side bar of this article). So many women working to make GirlFriends a vibrant and interesting organization. Without Robert Rankin and the staff of Isla, nothing would be possible. Whenever and wherever they were asked to help, they did their jobs in a most professional manner. Debbie Allen was selected to receive the Volunteer Service Award. I could not begin to count the number of communications she has sent to GirlFriend members. Thanks, Debbie, for the years you have done the job of keeping our members informed about all activities. As we reflect on the August party (Midnight at the Oasis), the decorating of the club for the holidays and the Masquerade in March, we know that next year will be even more dynamic. Congratulations to the 2016-2017 Board: President, Sandy Helmintoller; 1st Vice President, Jennifer Haycraft; 2nd Vice President, Shirley Johnson; Secretary, Kathy Blazowski; Treasurer, Wanda Hollon; Membership Coordinator, Carol Kraynak; and New Member Coordinator, Lisa Eskridge. By the time you read this article, they will have been working diligently to organize for the New Year. What an honor it was to serve as President of 400 GirlFriends. Thanks for that opportunity.

Hug and a tug to all, Dixie President

The closing meeting of the season was held on April 21st. This was the last opportunity for President Joan Tellefsen to preside after two years of service. Thank you, Joan, for the great job you have done. Two members have been put on the Board...Pat Polonus and Judy Willis. Two major awards were given at this meeting. Mary Waller was named Player the Year and Shirley Johnson was named the Most Improved Player. Some of the winners of major tournaments during the season were again recognized and given their awards. The Six-woman scramble was played in April. 54 women made up nine teams with each team designated by the name of a type of tropical fish. The teams decorated their golf carts and their clothing to display the colorful fish they represented. The top two winning teams were: Team 1 with a score of 65 - Cheryl Newmaster Sue Gibbs, Kate Decoursey, Merle Kew, Lise Meagher and Gerry Davidson Team 2 with a score of 68 - Roz Heenan, Sara Mulligan, Gen Joyner, Merriebea Stankowicz, Jean Venable, and Muriel Kehoe Opening Day this Fall will be on October 25th. Our annual Invitational tournament will occur on October 31st with a Halloween theme (for those who want to dress in costume). On November 1st, we will have the MVP Rally which will be a fund raiser for the Mamography Voucher Program. Our Member Guest tournament will be held on March 23rd. Chairperson, Pam Harris, has plans to use a theme of “Glitz, Glamor and Gold” for the day. That gives us lots of time to get our imaginations working on some original costumes ideas for our foursomes. I bet we’ll be seeing lots of sequins, tiaras and jewels on the course that day.

AHOY, The summer heat is on and although the water temperature is 91 degrees the sea breeze coming over Boca Ciega Bay sure feels good each afternoon. As of early July our Yacht Basin occupancy is back to 100%. We have just started a wet slip waiting list and the boat lift waiting list is currently at 7 members. Our marina layout consists of docks A through F. Dock “D” was just recently completely rebuilt. Please take a stroll out and see the huge difference it has made. This dock was done first mainly

because while it did not collapse, the caps at both ends of the dock literally dropped almost a foot. The caps are the horizontal timbers which hold up the stringers and the decking/walkways. We tore down and rebuilt everything including the caps, stringers, decking, cross braces and pilings. During the tear out almost every visible structure (from a few feet under water – up to the deck) was either severely rotten, decayed or in many spots not even there. However, we did find that some of the pilings in the deep water were not sun and worm damaged as they went down below the low tide line and deeper under water. Rather than disposing of them, these pilings are being placed on the north wavebreaking wall to further strengthen it. In the very near future we will be setting 2 mooring buoys for smaller boats and jet skis just off the pool deck for our members and reciprocal club guests. Please know you can also call the Dockmaster cell # at 727-542-2445 to tie up in the marina as well. Also, please remember that Isla is a member of Yachting Clubs of America and you can pick up a reciprocal courtesy card in my office. There are hundreds of clubs across the country that you can visit, but most require the membership card. Fair Winds! Captain Richie

From the Tennis Courts Summer time at Isla and the heat is upon us. It doesn’t matter what time of the day, heat and humidity play a big role in how and how much you play. Heat issues and hydration issues can be related to each other but are not one in the same. Overheating involves the body not being able to cool itself down. Your skin will get clammy and you might, believe it or not, get the chills. You could get dizzy as well. When these issues arise, get out of the sun, into as cool a place as possible. A cool towel around the neck to begin with, even a cool bath, if needed. Anything to get body temp down. Dehydration is the lack of enough fluids in your body. Dehydration occurs when the body can’t replace fluid fast enough in the body when sweating. We see dehydration a lot during morning play. People don’t always drink enough after a long night without water. Humidity levels are high during morning hours and it becomes easy to use up the body’s liquid supplies. Nausea, muscle cramps and extreme thirst are common symptoms. Of course, if we lose our ability to sweat, we lose our ability to cool our body, so often times overheating issues can occur. Two things are important to combat dehydration. Number one is to drink plenty of water (not Gatorade) before playing. Your urine should be clear. Number two is to drink often while you play. A 50/50 mix of Gatorade (or Powerade) and water is appropriate. The mix is to dilute and make it easier on the stomach and the Gatorade itself will help to replace electrolytes lost during play.

The fall of 2016 will be busy as ever. We kick off the fall with a big day on Saturday, October 29th with a Tennis Exhibition and Dinner at the courts. You never know what up and coming player you might see. One of the girls playing in The Exhibition we had in the fall of 2011 went on to be a 3 time All American and 2 time NCAA Singles Champion. The daily exchange provides thought free tennis for everyone. Members just need to sign up and show up and games at your level will be arranged. Call the Tennis Pro Shop to sign up or for more information. Members of Isla Del Sol should remember we have a great Fitness Center located at the Tennis Pro Shop. The Fitness Center had a new Universal Machine installed September of 2015. All members are welcome to use the facility. It is important to note, and we need help from all members using the equipment, that due to the size of the room, guests of members are not allowed. Please respect the other members and monitor your guests. This is my 17th year at Isla Del Sol and it’s been a fabulous ride. The exchange program has grown and the yearly schedule has something for everyone. I hope to see more people using the courts and encourage anyone who is a member at the club to feel free to stop by and find out how you can join the fun.

Tennis ‘Snack and Chat’ The last Friday of every month

We ended last season with a string of successful events. We crowned champions in Women’s, Men’s and Mixed Doubles. The George Klette Award for service at the Tennis Center went to Sandy Gelmini and Chuck Blair. The Women’s Tennis Association started the Diane Spinelli Scholarship this past year and raised enough money to have 6 weeks of summer tennis camp plus lessons provided to 2 deserving kids. The WTA took applications and did interviews throughout the spring. The 2 winners were 11 year old Adriana Saballos and 13 year old Gabriel Paskeviscious. They both enjoyed a productive summer at Kevin’s Tennis Camp at Isla.
