From the President & General Manager Tom Danielson, President Robert Rankin, General Manager Dear Isla Members, Calendar year 2017 continues to be a very successful year for the Club with revenues exceeding budget from a participating membership, strong outside events, and all departments at or above plan through August. We have enjoyed near perfect weather for the year, until Hurricane Irma blew through Tampa Bay Sunday and Monday September 10 - 11, and put a real crimp in our facilities. While Hurricane Irma could have been much worse, she left our property a mess, damaging our golf course, our tennis courts, our yacht basin, and the roof, grille room and dining room of our clubhouse. However, with the quick action of our dedicated staff who stayed at the Club during the storm, and those who arrived the next day to pitch in, clean up efforts began immediately. Difficult times bring out the best, and Isla has some great people. A giant “thank you” to those who stayed and those who showed up to help. The Grounds Department began working immediately on Tuesday to clear the golf course of debris including over 100 fallen/damaged trees. We are relieved to say none of the greens suffered significant damage and several of our trees could be saved. A big shout out goes to Fred Curtis and his staff, along with other club employees, and even a couple members, who all pitched in with Kevin Sunderman and the grounds crew to keep the recovery process moving along, and by Wednesday September 20th, the golf course was open for play. The clubhouse sustained damage to the roof and the clubhouse windows allowed intrusion of rainwater inside the dining room and grille room, impacting the carpet, hardwood dance floors and drywall. These needed to be repaired as soon as possible to prevent further loss of income from weddings, other outside events and member use. The club’s maintenance staff was able to repair the dance floor and drywall in house. The ballroom carpet was immediately dried out, cleaned and repaired by an outside carpet service. We contacted several roofing companies, obtained bids, and secured a contractor to work immediately on our roof to make the necessary repairs. Our in house maintenance team then was able to turn their attention to assessing the clubhouse windows, making necessary repairs and caulking window frame gaps which allowed the water intrusion. The pool bar was operational within days after the storm, the grille room was reopened with the opening of the golf course, and the main dining room was ready for business by Wednesday, September 20, barely a week after the storm. The good news related to the yacht basin was that the sections of the dock that have been refurbished stood up well to the storm, but the older docks’ sections did sustain some damage. The priority of our dock refurbishment has shifted to these damaged sections and the wave arrestor that did its job to protect our docks but sustained significant damage. Our contractor has committed to reinforce the wave arrestor with existing materials and to provide us additional pilings at no cost, charging us only the labor cost to make these repairs. Longer term we need to evaluate in our capital planning process what we can do to better protect our clubhouse and yacht basin from tropical storms that may hit Florida in the future. Given that our insurance deductible for the golf course is $200,000 and for the clubhouse is $250,000, the cost of repairs to the club and labor incurred for clean up and repair on the golf course will need to be absorbed by the club, including loss of business. We have had a very good year through August; while September will be impacted by loss of business and the cost of repairs, we are hopeful with a good October through December, the Club may be able to weather the storm, and meet our budgeted plan for the year.

First, I would like to thank the good Lord above that everyone is safe and sound and the majority of us came through hurricane Irma without any significant damage. Things… can be replaced, our Isla Family cannot. With that being said, we are very blessed and we all are picking up the pieces and moving forward. A BIG thank you and shout out to some of our Members and our Staff, for all of their hard work, in getting our Club back on track.

What does the Special Operaions Warrior Foundaion (SOWF) do? There have been several quesions about SOWF and some confusion with another charity that has been in press recently. So just to clarify, we wanted you to know that SOWF is not associated with other chariies with “Wounded Warrior” in their organizaional name. SOWF coninues to receive a four-star raing (highest possible) for the past ten years from Charity Navigator, a leading non-proit watchdog group. You are probably aware of the fact that SOWF provides full college scholarships for children of Special Operators, but they actually do much more. Steve McLeary summarizes it with three major focus points of the organizaion: 1. Immediate inancial assistance to wounded Special Operators 2. Educaional counseling 3. College Scholarships Immediate Financial Assistance When a Special Operator is injured overseas, they are generally taken to Germany for iniial care. They are then transferred to a U.S. hospital. As soon as SOWF is noiied, they dispatch a $5,000 check for immediate needs of the family in this trying ime. The check is sent overnight mail and delivered bedside. SOWF also sends a backpack with an Ipad and other materials so that family members can keep in touch with each other. Since 2006, SOWF has spent $2.3 million on immediate inancial assistance for Special Operators and their families. Educaional Counseling Within 30 days of noiicaion from U.S. Command of a Special Operator’s death, the family receives informaion about SOWF’s programs. This iniial contact is followed up with birthday and holiday cards each year to the children covered by the programs. One of the programs is unlimited tutoring from kindergarten through college graduaion, administered by “Professional Tutors of America”. Throughout the children’s lives, SOWF provides educaion materials including College Preparatory material while in high school. College Scholarships SOWF provides full college scholarships which cover tuiion, room & board, and books/materials. They have over 1,100 children in their program and 286 of the children have graduated with their college degrees. Currently, there are 158 children atending colleges and universiies across the country. Over the past ive years, 92% of SOWF children atended college versus the naional average of 59%. In addiion, of those, 94% graduate from college versus the naional average of 60%. Doing the math, that means that 86% of SOWF children graduate from college versus 36% naionwide. That’s impressive! 11849 As you can see, Special Operaions Warrior Foundaion does a lot. What you probably don’t know is that they do all of this with only 15 employees! That’s a far cry from many chariies that are bloated with administraion and markeing expenses. That’s one of the reasons why SOWF has received a four-star raing from Charity Navigator for ten years in a row! SOWF keeps costs down because they realize you have entrusted them with your valuable charitable dollars. Thanks for your support of SOWF!

GirlFriends

Kathy Blazowski, GirlFriends President “A Women’s Club with Isla Flair and a Tropical Twist” We have been having a great time at GirlFriends these past few months. Our luncheons are most enjoyable both in great food and interesting discussions. We found out what to do after we call 911; some of us were able to take the citizen CPR course sponsored by the Tierra Verde Fire District; a few of us were able to “show off” new hairstyles with our “Fun with Wigs”; and we all found out what wonderful opportunities await us at the OLLI program at Eckerd College. Before you know it, we will be celebrating at our cheerful December Holiday luncheon. The time really flies by when we all have a good time.

Our Isla summer event held on August 12th was a rip-roaring Western Murder Mystery. We had 140 attendees dressed in all kinds of Western regalia who left their horses at the front door and enjoyed the comedic entertainment with the delicious meal prepared by Chef and his ranch hands. Donna and her “dining hall” cowboys and cowgirls served us well. Thank you to Diane Howard and her committee of decorating geniuses for transforming Isla into the town of Dry Gulp, USA. And a big thank you to our honorary “GirlFriends”, Kelly Hart and Tim Ansel, for all their decorating help!

If you like to go out and try different area restaurants, we have that. If you like to read exciting books, we have that too. We are also starting an audio book club for those who like to listen to books on the go. Bowling, knitting, bridge, mah jongg, water aerobics, yoga, you name it, we have it. There is truly something for everybody. All you have to do is join GirlFriends and the rest is easy. We are a welcoming mix of ladies that enjoy having fun. You are sure to make a bunch of new friends along the way! 11416 Don’t forget to mark your calendars for Saturday March 3rd which is the date for our annual Winter Gala. We will be announcing all the information for that event in the coming months. And finally, GirlFriends will be turning Isla into a Holiday wonderland when we all get together to decorate on the Monday morning after Thanksgiving. Come join us for this fun time and be amazed at the Holiday magic that will appear.

From the Rough

Kevin Sunderman, Golf Course Superintendent I have two words‌ Hurricane. Irma. That pretty much sums up recent events here with the Isla grounds department. For two weeks, everything was on hold with normal maintenance and projects as we shifted to clean-up mode. I currently do not have a final count of trees lost. Some that had fallen we stood back up and are trying to save. Others that were still standing were too damaged and needed to come down. Regardless, there were approximately 100 trees affected in some way by the storm. Fortunately, many of the trees lost were melaleuca trees that are actually considered an invasive species in Florida. We also lost several bottlebrush trees, a few palms and some Australian pines. Most of these trees were old, did not look attractive and provided little value to the golf course. We will take our time evaluating our tree situation going forward. We are still evaluating other areas like the ficus hedge that borders several holes separating the golf course from the Bayway. The hedge blew over in several areas. We may try to trim these plants back and replant but the success of these actions remains to be seen. Repair from storm damage may linger for some time. We have numerous stumps to remove, holes to fill and sod to install. However, October is a critical time for caring for the turf as we prepare to transition to the cooler winter months. We will be making late season herbicide applications to clean up any weeds that were persistent enough to survive through the summer. We will also be controlling any adult mole crickets that might also be lingering around. Finally, I must thank many employees from other departments of the club for their efforts helping with the cleanup. Led by Fred Curtis, the golf staff was instrumental in providing the extra manpower needed to clean up debris in a timely fashion. Not only did the golf staff help but employees from other parts of the club, including food and beverage, chipped in. This is just another example of the great team we have here at Isla. For more up to date information and photos on what is happening in the grounds department you can follow the Isla Del Sol Golf Course Maintenance blog at www.isladelsolgcn.blogspot.com. Bonnie Henshaw

Hi everyone! Summer has sped into the past and the many WGA activities for the 2017-18 season are waiting for us to get involved. Hope everyone has been able to practice their golfing skills over the past months. Since there are no leftover scores from last season to report, we’re starting with a clean slate and a short article. Invitations have been sent out to various golf clubs for our annual Invitational Tournament to be played on October 30th. Registration for this competition usually fills up early. A Halloween theme promises a wide variety of costumes and cart decorations. Our Tournament Chair, Darlene Hanson, has been hard at work setting up a layout of challenging games for us. Listed below is the schedule for October: October 3 (First day of WGA play) 11:45 a.m. ABCD 1BB on Evens and 2BBs on Odds October 10 11:45 a.m. Flighted A,B,C,D October 17 11:45 a.m. Pick Your Partner, Best Ball Net October 24 10:00 a.m. Opening Day/Luncheon Meeting Sun vs. Snow October 30 1:00 p.m. Invitational Tournament Shamble October 31 11:45 a.m. Pick Your Team: Dick and Jane a new format--three women invite one Man as their 4th (shades of Sadie Hawkins Day?!) So now that we have the lowdown on the start of our season, let’s get out there and sign up for some fun. The schedule for the rest of the year will be available at our Opening Day luncheon. Dates you may want to save ahead could be May 21 and 22 for the Member/Guest. We have two new members joining our ranks. Welcome to Jennifer Polich and Carol Johnson! One last thought, real golfers don’t cry as they line up their fourth putts. See you on the practice range.

MGA Update Karl Gustke

It has been somewhat of a long hot summer. Nevertheless, there were a few significant events that are worthy of mention. First of all, Bill Calhoun turned 80 in July and was recognized and celebrated by the MGA. Also there is a new golf handicap sheriff in town and his name is Rocky Ainsworth. Rocky has replaced Jim Heenan who did a wonderful job as the MGA Director of Information. Jim and Roz have moved out of the Isla area and will be sorely missed. They were both active and positively involved in the Isla community. Before he left, Jim did some great work researching and developing an Isla Del Sol Handicap committee. Rocky has picked up where Jim left off and in close coordination with the WGA, Ninettes, and “game leaders” has officially formed the committee. This august group is responsible for the oversight of all activities impacting Isla members’ scores and handicaps. Particularly noteworthy is that this new program has “teeth” and includes enforcement and sanctions against violators. An e-mail blast was recently sent that provides specific policies and procedures for implementation on November 1st, 2017. This is a welcome undertaking and can only enhance fair play for all golf competitions. Since the last article your MGA has approved a couple of changes to tournament play. Starting this fall some of the Pick-Your-Partner events will start with a 12:30 pm shotgun instead of 8:00 am. Also, the championship flight will play from the blue tees for the Club Championship. Finally, we had to resolve some scheduling conflicts for the Member-Guest. After a member referendum the dates of March 13-16 were voted in. Note that this is a Tuesday instead of Wednesday practice round with the final rounds and shoot-out on Friday instead of Saturday. Also, Saint Patrick’s Day is Saturday. The Club will have a Saint Patrick’s Day golf tournament and a party later that evening. Your guests and you are welcome to join in the festivities. It is setting to be a great weekend! All the tournaments and events are provided below. Have a great season!

Ninette News Alexandria Dubisz

It is unfathomable how quickly the season has passed. The summer is gone and soon our Northern friends will be returning. Helene Logue has reported that the Ninette’s summer play was unremarkable due to the extreme heat and some rain dates. That said, there were three who braved the elements and did play: Shar Sakol, Ro O’Rourke and Helene Logue. Way to go, ladies! We are looking forward to our new season, and the plans for a spectacular year have already begun. Knowing that most of us Ninettes are familiar with our Board, it is time to introduce them to the rest of Isla. Our returning President, Terri Vellinga, is a native of Toronto, Canada. She and her husband John have been Isla winter residents since the late 1970’s. They spend the summers in the Muskoka Lakes district with their two daughters and four grandchildren. First Vice President is Tona Converse. When Tona and husband Jerry are not at Isla (their little slice of paradise), they are in Ohio with four children and 10 beautiful, active grandchildren, as well as other friends and relatives. Second Vice-President is Elaine Skiles, a native of Connecticut, born and raised there. She retired as a Licensed Clinical Social Worker for the Department of Corrections. She and husband George have 12 grandchildren, all in Connecticut; although they are Florida residents, they spend summers and Christmas with family. Irene DiGugleilmo is our Secretary. She and husband Joe call Chicago home in the summertime; they are Sox fans. She enjoys being with her daughter and grandchildren. While in Chicago, she plays Mah-Jongg and golfs with family and friends. Sharon Phillips is our Treasurer. She and husband Dennis spend May through September in Ohio visiting with her Mom, who is 90, and her mother-in-law, who is 97! (Talk about nice longevity!) Back in 1995, Sharon and Dennis were so impressed with Isla and the friendliness of the club, they decided to join, and are happy to spend their winters here. Hello All,

Emmett Crews, Rear Commodore

Well, it was an interesting summer to say the least. Our new dock construction was (and still is) going great, but we did have Hurricane Irma approach us late Sunday night on September 10th. The new docks held up really well, but parts of “C” dock and the wavebreaking wall took some serious damage. Several of our members’ boats were damaged as well. Some reports said that the winds were blowing/gusting around 100 mph. Before and especially after the storm, it was amazing to see our members and employees come together to help the club and each other in so many ways. Several members arrived immediately and pitched in where they could. I had employees from the Tennis, Golf, Maintenance and F&B departments out on the dock helping us out. The list of names of people who offered assistance is awesome. I can’t thank you all enough for caring so much and being there.

Now it’s time to get back on our feet, and with the strong-willed, good people that surround us here – I know we will. The order of the 5 phases of reconstructing the marina may now need to be adjusted, but work has not stopped. Different styles for the wavebreaking wall are being discussed. The Flag Committee and the Board of Directors are working together to come up with a plan of reallocating funds to have the marina back to the best shape possible. That was a tough storm to weather, but we were actually very lucky. It could have been much worse.

Robert Rankin

All of the slips in the marina are full, and although the dock got beat up a bit and some boats are hurt, the attitudes of the boaters are great. There are wonderful people at this club, and even a hurricane can’t change that!

From the Tennis Courts The summer of 2017 will go down as the busiest, in terms of member play, since I’ve been here (summer of 2000). This summer we introduced “Masters” Tennis. Masters Tennis is played on a smaller court with softer, less lively balls. We had at least one, sometimes two, courts of Masters Tennis going on Fridays. It was popular enough that we had groups use our dedicated court (court #9) other days. Many of our current tennis players enjoyed playing Masters Tennis as did other club members wanting to return to a racket sport. Kevin Sunderman and his crew spent much of the summer putting in new landscaping. Almost finished as of this writing, the new landscaping provides a very eye catching look.

The best time of the year is arriving as we welcome back members who were away for the summer. The family gets back together and soon it will seem like no one ever left. Our daily exchanges will go from 4-5 courts to a full house seemingly overnight.

We ended last season with a string of successful events. We crowned champions in Women’s, Men’s and Mixed Doubles. The George Klette Award for service to the tennis program went to Judith Schleicher and Chuck Blair.

We kick off the fall with a big day on Saturday, October 28th. We are doing a Welcome Back Dinner and Exhibition at the Tennis Center. More information will be posted around the club as we get nearer to the event. The Halloween Tournament will be played on the morning of Monday, October 30th. The most popular event of the season, Davis Cup, is a two day team tournament. This event kicks off with a dinner on Thursday, November 9th at 6:30pm and is followed by play on Friday and Saturday mornings. The year ends with our always popular Holiday Mixer, which will include our Fall Snack and Chat, on Saturday, December 8th. The fall of 2017 should be busier than ever. The daily exchanges provide thought free tennis for all levels. Members need to just sign up and show up and they have their game for the day. Call the Tennis Pro Shop for information and times. Members of Isla Del Sol should remember we have a great Fitness Center located next to the Tennis Pro Shop. All members are welcome to use the facility. It is important to note, due to the size of the room, guests of members are not allowed. Please respect the other members and monitor your guests. I just completed my 17th year at Isla Del Sol and it has been a fabulous ride. The exchange program has grown and the yearly schedule has something for everyone. I hope to see more people using the courts and encourage anyone who is a member at the club to feel free to stop by and find out how you can join the fun.

It is hard to believe fall is here but we love to see our northern friends migrating to this wonderful spot on mother earth.

Over the summer we increased our use of Court 9 for Masters Tennis and sometimes have a second court going on Friday. It is a fun game and has attracted some golfers, as well as new tennis folks. To play just signup in the Tennis Center or give Kevin Quay a call.

Our kick-off August Tennis Social was a great success. Play was great Tennis Social players (L -R) Debbie Budreau, and the snack and chat style food Wanda Hollon, Mimi Burris, Karen Hessel outstanding. Carol Schindler even managed to bake a happy birthday cake with her arm in a sling, how did she do that? With one successful Tennis Social in August, Debbie Budreau has agreed to chair one on Thursday September 21 at 6 p.m. We expect to continue these events on October 19, and December 14 for a holiday special. Just sign up in the Tennis Center and Kevin Quay will work his magic to assure that all will have good play. And don’t forget the food or drink. We are finding out that we have secret gourmets among us (store bought works as well). Just want to take a minute to recognize the Tennis Committee and its’ Chair (and Isla Board member) Sandy Gelmini as well as Building and Grounds staffer Kevin Sunderman for their tennis area landscaping thoughts which turned to plans and are becoming reality. We have new shrubbery, pavers (on the way) as well as bathroom painted and an outside of the building scrubbed. We will be moving additional tables and chairs onto the area outside of the Tennis Center to accommodate social events and after tennis talk. Tennis Committee members are Chuck Blair, Debbie Budreau, Pat Gousha, Peter Mulligan, Judith Schleicher and Kevin Quay. 12299 Our fall schedule is full, beginning with the traditional competitive tennis exhibition on October 28th at 4 p.m. The event features our Tennis Scholar kids Adriana and Gabby in some challenging doubles matches. There will be some tennis surprises as well. We look forward to the exhibition and hope folks will stay and enjoy some food, drink and tennis company. WTA meetings and round robin play are October 13th and November 10th, lunch and meetings at the club following play. We expect to have occasional speakers with subjects of interest to us. Kevin Quay will kick off the season with a tennis update in October. So WELCOME HOME snowbirds. We missed you!
