Board of Directors 2015

From the President & General Manager Joe Kinder, President I am truly honored to be your club President in 2015. You have my assurance that myself and my fellow board members will strive to build on the successes Isla Del Sol has experienced in recent years. Many other clubs in our area and elsewhere in the U.S. are struggling to stay afloat. With that in mind, we are not looking to overhaul our successful business model here at Isla. However, that doesn’t mean that we can’t get better in our daily execution of service and performance. We have a great staff that is being asked to find and implement improvements, while staying within their 2015 budget. 2014 was a very successful year for our club. We did extremely well financially, our membership continued to grow, and members seem to be quite happy as a whole. A State of the Club letter was sent to all members in February that provides greater detail on our 2014 performance. If any member has concerns about our club, please see me or our General Manager, Robert Rankin. We may not always be able to correct your specific concern, but we want everyone to know we welcome and value your input.

Robert Rankin, General Manger

I would like to welcome all new members to the club. It has been a couple of great years for membership at Isla. 2013 we signed up 94 new members, last year we signed up 93 and so far this year we have 16 new members, only losing around 55 each year. The summer program continues to produce the largest amount of members. I would like to thank the Board, all Committee Members, Club Members and the Staff for all their time and hard work and for making Isla del Sol such a special place for so many. Last year we were able to spend hundred thousand more than budget on capital improvements for the club. The 2015 budget reflects the same as long as we do not have any unforeseen emergencies. I am very excited to go into 2015 with so much positive energy at the club. If there’s ever anything I can do for you please do not hesitate to stop by my office - the door is always open.

25th Anniversary KUDOS TO ALL WHO PARTICIPATED IN THE 2015 PLAY FOR HUNGER WEEKEND. Play for Hunger was a phenomenal success this year. ONCE AGAIN, OUR GOAL HAS BEEN MET!!! More than $136,000 was raised for the local charities, St. Petersburg Free Clinic and Daystar Life Center. Our Isla community, working together, additionally filled up 10 barrels of much needed food and personal hygiene items, as well as numerous truckloads of gently used clothing and household goods to the Daystar Thrift Shop. The lovely weekend weather allowed for all the outdoor activities to go on as planned, on the tennis courts, on the waters of Boca Ciega Bay and on the lush fairways and greens of our golf course. This year, we had a record number of participants, with 30 tennis players, 102 cruise luncheon guests, 83 cruisers, and 176 golfers. More than 235 people, who joyously gathered together to hear the results of the fundraising campaign, attended the gala dinner. They also listened to the story of a former client of St. Petersburg Free Clinic as she explained how Play for Hunger contributions directly impacted her life’s journey. The dinner was a memorable culmination of a weekend of generosity and friendship. Thanks to each and everyone who gave so generously to all areas of this event. First, we thank all the members who made generous donations directly to St. Petersburg Free Clinic and Daystar Life Center. Then we need to remember with gratitude Robert Rankin and his staff at Isla del Sol, who so willing help with the tournaments, the facilities, and the food

4

and beverage services during the weekend. Next, we want to thank the captains and crews of the boats who entertained members during Sunday’s cruise. Lastly we need to recognize and thank all the volunteers who worked tirelessly from November through February, preparing for Play For Hunger weekend. We especially need to thank the committee chairmen, Bill Saas, Betsy Dow and Pam Cadigan, Carl Hanson and Mike McParlane, Commodore Bob Dollar and Joyce Dollar, Sandy Gelmini, Paul Margarone and Cliff Beakes, Bob Dow and Bob Walsh, Charles and Susan Eanes, Stacy Stenholm, Alex and Frank Dubisz, Joe and Sue Werner, Elaine Walsh, Kelly and Pam Hart. What a team! This event, as Isla’s official charity, enables all of our members to play together in friendship as they unite together to provide help & hope to our neighbors in need!

MEMBERS OF ISLA-WE THANK YOU! Co-Chairmen, Bob and Gen Joyner and David and Janet Christein

Déjà vu? The weather this winter has been eerily similar to the weather last winter. While we didn’t experience much extreme cold like 2010, it has been pretty cool and damp just like last year. There have been many days of clouds, fog and rain. The winter months tend to be our dry months but we’ve already had over 4” of rain this year. We welcome rain to flush any salt accumulation from the soil and provide water for the plants but there can be too much of a good thing. The grass isn’t growing as vigorously in the winter months and requires less water. Any water not used by the grass tends to keep playing conditions soft. The grass also prefers sun to clouds as sunlight = energy to the plant. Persistent dampness also promotes weed and disease development. What’s exciting is we know the days will be getting longer and temperatures should be going up getting us back into grass-growing weather!

originally started as a summertime cultural practice aimed at increasing the density of the rough areas. The members who were here during the summer liked the single-cut so much that it was requested we continue this process all winter long. Many members upon returning in the fall liked the new look and playability as well. Up to this point in time it has worked out fairly well and we will continue to evaluate. As always, remember that etiquette has always been a major part of the game of golf. Part of golf etiquette is filling divots, raking sand traps and repairing ballmarks. Even if you can’t find your own ballmark, please make an effort to repair someone else’s. Your Golf Course Superintendent, Kevin Sunderman

For the past year we have taken a different approach to traditional golf course maintenance. The rough height grass on the golf course has been lowered to fairway height. 12132 Every blade of grass not under a tree or along a lake bank is being cut at fairway height. This

From the Tennis Courts THE BUSIEST TIME OF THE SEASON IS UPON US AT THE ISLA TENNIS CENTER The Calcutta and Women’s Member/Guest started the New Year in the right direction. The Calcutta, interestingly, had none of the favorites winning. Thirty two players participated and over fifty joined us for dinner the night before the event. The Women’s Member/Guest was played on a cold, windy day and, with everyone showing up, provided an exciting finish. March madness is upon us and the St. Patrick’s Day Tournament is on Saturday March 14th. Play begins at 9:00 am. The Men’s, Women’s and Mixed Tournaments will be played throughout the next 2 weeks. The Mixed Championships are Friday March 20th and Friday March 27th. The Women’s Championships open on Monday the 23rd and conclude on Monday March 30th. The Men begin play on Tuesday March 24th and the finals are scheduled for Tuesday March 31st. All matches will begin at 9:00 am. April opens on Saturday the 4th with our Spring Fling Open House at the Tennis Center. We will be introducing “Masters” Tennis, played on a smaller court with softer, lighter and less

bouncy tennis balls. There will be food and music to go along with both regular and Masters tennis. Everyone from the club is invited and the event begins at 5:00pm. The Grand Mess, Friday April 10th, marks the end of a busy, busy season. The Round Robin Tournament at 9:00 will be followed with a luncheon. All Championship prizes, as well as the George Klette Award, will be presented. This award is voted on by the tennis playing members and is given to the man and woman who have contributed the most to the tennis program over the season. Last year’s winners were Pat Gousha and Paul Margarone. The world famous exchange program saw a 9:00 am starting time beginning January 1. This start time continues through the end of March. Our “sign up and show up” mixer we have every morning will go back to an 8:30 am start time beginning in April. The Ladies have a team in the South Pinellas Tennis League and were crowned winners of the Fall League. Michelle Entwistle captains the team in the 3.5A League and as of this writing were winning their Winter League flight and looking to move into the Championship flight.

There’s lot of “picking” going on as we prepare for some of our upcoming events, such as pick your partner, pick your team and pick your guest. Members of Member-Guest committee are as busy as bees preparing to Wow our guests in one of our most stellar events of the season. Applications are in and the field of players is full. The theme for this year is Tropical Paradise. We expect to see lots of original ideas for team attire. Grass skirts anyone? Some foursomes will even be decking out their golf carts. The practice tee will be very busy as we prepare for all the upcoming challenges. Here’s how this reporter feels about practice. If I hit it right, it’s a slice. If I hit it left, it’s a hook. If I hit it straight, 10224 it’s a MIRACLE! See you on the course, Bonnie

Women’s Tennis Association Our WTA 35th Anniversary Member/ Guest was a wonderful event. Pictured are the teams along with former presidents Alice Lohss, Ruth Rom, Dotty Hoy, Jane Putzel, Terri Lavoie, Joan Wulfson, Elaine Schuler, Michelle Entwistle, Cathy Groeschel, and Marion Harvey. Our Pro, Kevin Quay, created a tennis trivia game for us to enjoy. The winner of the game was Judy Schleicher. Her prize was a lesson with Kevin. Judy Dye sang a truly hilarious song for our entertainment. Michelle Entwistle took all the photos for our web-site and created a photo CD of past events and players. Thanks to Stacy Stenholm for her assistance. Judy Schleicher and her daughter, Krista Newton, created the tennis themed centerpieces for each table. Chef Frederic and his staff provided a buffet lunch with a turkey carving station, soup and all the fixings for salads. DELICIOUS!!

We had several door prizes. A very special prize was donated by Shannon Mas-tronardo, owner with her sons of Nardo’s Naturals. Thanks to all who donated prizes.

From the Yacht Basin AHOY! Finally its spring time and more consistent good boating weather should be on the horizon. Hopefully this will happen especially for Jill and Mark Bridges as they set sail in March for a 3 month island hopping trip toward the Bahamas. The two of them made the trip last year as well and came back with great stories of paddle boarding over crystal clear water looking at giant spiny lobster, conch shells and all kinds of fish. The Bridges are two of many of kind members in the Isla Yacht basin that often donate their boats to our charity events and more. All of their generosity is greatly appreciated. Let’s wish them calm seas and a following wind! As of mid-February the occupancy in the marina is near 100%. There are two spaces open. One where a boat could tie up in a wet slip, and one space is available if someone would like to install their own boat lift.

Wavebreaking wall update: We have started to get the wall off of our A & B docks. The entire wall is being moved out 15 feet and will wrap around the northeast and northwest corners as well. Upon completion this free standing 524 foot wavebreaker will be taking on the crashing waves lessening the “rocking” of the walkways and our main structures. This will better protect our (most susceptible) north ends that used to require constant “band-aid” repairs. We can then focus on the interior docks that need attention. Sea ya! Captain Richie
