Board of Directors 2015

From the President & General Manager Robert Rankin, General Manger I would like to thank Joe Kinder and the Board for all your help and support in 2015. I would like to congratulate Jude Doheny our 2016 President and welcome David Christein, Brian Young, Sandy Gelmini and Del Dameron to the 2016 Board. The staff and Board have worked very hard to ensure financial success in 2015 and also to enhance the member experience. Due to the positive numbers in membership we were able to go above our $333,000 capital budget and spend $392,000. We are also very happy to report that our capital budget in 2016 is $410,000. In 2015, all departments were at or above plan, except food and beverage and the yacht basin which is at 98% capacity. The miss in food and beverage was due to a short fall in outside events. Melissa made a huge impact in seeing that we recovered as much as possible in 2015 and she has over 30 weddings booked this year. We signed up 110 summer members - 55 who extended with 29 joined. We also had 51 annual members who joined throughout the year. Please help us to make new members feel as though this is their home away from home. Membership is our number one focus every year so please let Star know when you have a potential member. I would like to thank all the members at this great club for making me a part of your Isla family. I am very proud of our accomplishments in 2015 and look forward to a fantastic 2016.

Joe Kinder, President It is hard to believe that my term as President of this wonderful club passed so quickly. By the time you read this article, Jude Dohney is the club President for 2016. Best wishes to Jude and our new Board for a successful year. As I reflect back on 2015, I feel we got a lot accomplished and the club had a very successful year from a financial and member satisfaction standpoint. One of my primary goals as President was to improve communication to our members and I believe we did so. However, there is still room for improvement going forward. I want to recognize my fellow Board members for their hard work and support in 2015. We agreed to undertake 36 major projects and the vast majority were accomplished. The few that were not completed were because of cost restrictions. Lastly, I want to thank Robert Rankin and 10631 his staff for an outstanding year. I can’t say enough about how hard they work to make our member’s experiences good ones. I received very few complaints or concerns from members, which tells me our staff is outstanding. Our club is structured in a way that the Board sets policy and lets our staff run the day to day operations. As long as we have employees like Robert and his staff, the club can function successfully under this structure in future years.

GirlFriends “A Women’s Club with Isla Flair and a Tropical Twist” GirlFriends continue to take an active role in Isla activities by decorating the Club (at the request of the Isla social committee) for the holidays on November 30. Twenty GirlFriends completed the task in a record time of 2 ½ hours, assisted by Tim, Willie and staff. Thanks to Robert for lunch after we were finished. GF’s removed the decorations on January 4 and put them away for another year. For the first time, GirlFriends will be a contributor (Special Angel) to Play for Hunger. Checks for the two agencies will be presented to PFH Co-Chairs, GirlFriends Janet Christein and Gen Joyner, at the January luncheon. A room in the new CASA (Community Action Stops Abuse) house has been named ISLA DEL SOL GIRLFRIENDS because of our monetary commitment to the organization. Funds from our 50/50 drawing held at each luncheon go to this project and $6,000 of our $10,000 goal (to be completed by December 2016) has been met. In addition, many gifts were presented to the CASA representative at the December luncheon. Our November luncheon and fashion show by Macy’s was attended by 211 GirlFriends and guests (the largest attendance since GF’s inception). The Children’s Choir from Montessori by the Sea created the perfect atmosphere for our December luncheon. Other luncheon programs scheduled are: Maria Lowe (Mayor of St. Pete Beach and wounded veteran); Wonderland Florist and an “Arts” program. A new pictorial directory (HOT NUMBERS) will be distributed to GF members at the January luncheon. As we now have over 400 members, this will be an excellent way to recognize other GF’s. If you are not at the January luncheon, contact a GF board member to receive your copy. HOT NUMBERS is added to our HOT FLASHES (monthly newsletter/calendar) and HOT STUFF (a previously published cookbook). Interest groups continue to be utilized by many of our members. If you are interested in any more information, please contact the chair listed on the side bar of this article. MASQUERADE—An Enchanting Evening of Isla Elegance is scheduled for March 5, 2016. Lots of exciting plans are being 11229 completed for this event. 160 reservations have already been received toward the 200 limit. Make your reservations now! GirlFriends was started with the motto of “GOOD TIMES AND NEW FRIENDSHIPS GUARANTEED.” We continue to strive to meet this goal and welcome new members. Happy and healthy 2016 to all and a hug and a tug, Dixie President

What a terrific Fall we had! With what seemed to be never-ending rain this summer the warm Fall gave us the opportunity to grow some grass. That doesn’t mean we didn’t have our challenges. Humidity was high and there were several overcast days. This resulted in little drying of the golf course and the spread of fungal disease on turfgrass. Fortunately, we kept ahead of any major problems and benefited from the warmer weather. Now we are in the peak of our golfing season. A lot of wear and tear by golfers and little recovery growth in winter means we must be proactive in managing traffic and wear of our golf course. This is the time of year I keep my fingers crossed for warm, sunny weather. I prefer warmer weather and so does the grass. Unfortunately, I have learned you can’t control the weather. What we can control is how we take care of the golf course. This starts with traffic control. Due to cooler weather and shorter days, the grass grows with less vigor in the wintertime reducing its ability to withstand stresses placed by cart and foot traffic. Areas such as walk-ups to tees and greens experience faster wear due to the concentration of traffic on these locations. In attempt to provide the best conditions possible, we use ropes and stakes to guide

golfers to the best spots for travel. We also use painted blue lines on the turf by the greens. These lines are intended to show those using the handicap blue flags the appropriate distance to keep carts away from greens. Regardless of where ropes, stakes and blue lines are located, it is never acceptable to drive a cart between a green and a bunker. This is both unsafe and places a concentrated amount of traffic stress in a small area. Please follow all traffic guides knowing that it benefits the condition of your golf course. As always, you are asked to fill divots and repair ballmarks. Even if the divot or ballmark isn’t yours, you should still repair it. If everyone makes an effort, we will all be rewarded. Finally, visit isladelsolgcn.blogspot.com for all the latest news concerning the golf course and grounds at Isla Del Sol. There you can even sign up to receive email notifications anytime a new post is made. It’s a useful tool to keep you informed of the latest information. Happy New Year! Now that the holidays are over we can get back to concentrating on our golf games. We’ve had two new members join our group this season. They are Pam Harris and Carolyn Smiley. The annual Invitational tournament led off the Fall events with 87 guests and 57 members participating. In October an opening day luncheon and meeting was held to discuss upcoming activities for the WGA as well as our usual entertaining rules review by Fred. It was announced that two season-long competitions this year will be “Player of the Year” and “Most Improved Golfer.” In November the first Major tournament of season, the Eclectic, was played. Wendy Vinsant was the overall winner. Other players who came in at the top of their flights were: Flight 1

1st place - Pam Harris 2nd place - Ellen Koppelman 3rd place - Betsy Soma 4th place - Kay Stadt

Flight 2 1st place tie - Carol Hayward and Debbie Kelaher 3rd place tie - Gen Joyner, Kate Decoursey, Simone Calhoun, and Kim Harlow Flight 3

Also we have our Member/Guest Day on March 24th. It is being planned around the theme “America the Beautiful”. All the above provide good reason for us to sharpen up our skills on the course and practice ranges. Remember, a golf ball is like a clock...always hit it at 6:00 o’clock and make it go toward 12:00 o’clock...but make sure you’re in the same time zone! While the Championship Flight will consist of golfers with the lowest handicaps, anyone can elect to play in the Championship Flight, but will compete at scratch (no handicap) and will play from the white tees. The Senior Flight will comprise those golfers who play from the white tees, and are not in the Championship Flight. The Super Senior Championship Flight will comprise those golfers who play from the gold tees, and are not opting to play in the Championship Flight. Both Senior Flights will play at 80% of their course handicap. The MGA will provide a keg at the pool after the Friday qualifying round. In March, we have the Saturday Ryder Cup on the 5th, followed by the Wednesday Pick Your Partner on Wednesday, March 9th with lunch and the annual meeting. From the Yacht Basin HELLO ALL, Was that December, or was it June? Way above average temperatures made for an awesome 2015 “Santa’s Boat Yard” party and New Year celebrations as well. A huge thank you goes out to Kelly Hart and Ken Smith for the lit arches down the marina entrance ramp, the Christmas pirate ship and much more. Big thanks to Kathy Walsh and Stacy Stenholm who donated their time to make this an extremely fun evening. For the 4th year in a row Lina Kunz was instrumental in bringing this night all together to be truly magical. Thank you Lina and her husband Vince also, who ran around as “The Crazy Grinch!” The Yachters really made it happen with all their hard work making the boats glow. Great job all!! Big plans are projected for the re-building of the IDSYCC marina. While some replacements and repairs have been made over the years many of the structures remain from the original construction which was completed around 1980. A detailed plan has been composed so that within 5 years the entire yacht basin will be solid, attractive and safer for years to come. As each section is

re-built every single piling will be wrapped with 2 protective coating materials to keep wood boring creatures out and prolong it’s life expectancy. All of the pilings that hold up the 36 boat lifts are currently being wrapped. Trex transcend was chosen for the decking throughout all of the docks. The color has not yet been decided on, but there is a 25 year warranty on this product and we are sure it will look very impressive. I’d like to thank our past commodores, flag committee members and especially Commodore Bob Dollar for the valuable input and advice at our flag meetings this past year. You are a great team and I’m looking forward to working with you all in 2016. Finally, I hope you all had a wonderful holiday season and thanks to all of the members who made ours very special. Sea Ya in the Spring time! Fair Winds, Captain Richie

FEBRUARY 20-23, 2016 GOAL $126,000 The 26th Annual Play for Hunger at Isla Del Sol is scheduled for February 20-23, culminating in a Celebration of Giving Dinner on February 23. The members of Isla Del Sol come together during this event not only to play together, but more importantly, to combine efforts to generously support two worthwhile St. Petersburg non-profit organizations, Daystar Life Center and St. Petersburg Free Clinic, both of which provide services to the less fortunate in our community. ***Take Notice that Play for Hunger has a new event this year in addition to golf, tennis and boating---there will be a Play Day for Game Lovers on Saturday afternoon from 1 to 4 pm in the upstairs of the clubhouse, consisting of Bingo, Mahjong and Sliding Gin. There will be three time periods, allowing members to play different games, or just play their favorite game with other members. Now all Isla members have an opportunity to come out and Play for Hunger with other members. We hope this event will become an annual event so let’s get together and play together. See the following form for contribution details. Play for Hunger is proud to be the official charity of Isla Del Sol. We hope to see members who have been generous in previous years as well as newer Isla members take part in this very worthwhile event of fun and friendship. We want to be a “Club Coming Together to Help Others”. Tennis-Saturday am; Play Day (NEW)-Saturday pm Cruise Luncheon and Cruise-Sunday; Golf-Monday am and pm Celebration of Giving Dinner -Tuesday evening Donation form should completed and turned in with your contribution to the Front Office or the Golf Pro Shop. Read the form for deadlines and information.
