Kensington Supports Our Veterans Home Base Reception and Golf Tournament February 21st and 22nd, 2015 Special Guest, MOH Recipient SSG Ryan M. Pitts Our fourth annual golf event to support our local SW FL Veterans through the Home Base Program (a partnership of Massachusetts General Hospital and the Boston Red Sox Foundation) will kick off with a reception on February 21st at 5:30 pm at our Clubhouse. This year our Reception will be Saturday evening prior to our Golf Scramble on Sunday. The program for the evening will include remarks by our honored guest, SSG Ryan M. Pitts who was awarded the Medal of Honor for intrepid courage and heroism while serving as a Forward Observer, 2d Platoon, CO C, 2/503d Infantry, 173d Airborne Brigade during combat operations at OP Topside, part of COB Kahler near the village of Wanat in Kunar Province, Afghanistan on July 13, 2008. Our friend and fellow member General Fred Franks (U.S. Army ret.) will host the program on behalf of our Volunteer Committee and speak briefly about recent efforts of Home Base to provide the health and fitness programs for our local SW FL veterans who have served our country in Afghanistan and Iraq, many of whom have Post Traumatic Stress and Traumatic Brain Injury (the “invisible wounds of war”). Mr. Armando Hernandez, a local Veteran of this war, FGCU graduate, and Program Director, will speak about the new program and also introduce Veteran participants who will explain to us all how the program has helped them. Our evening also includes a silent auction and is a great opportunity for those playing golf on Sunday to meet each other including the Veterans playing in their group. According to General Franks, it has been the genuine and generous support of Kensington’s members among others that have been key in allowing Home Base to establish last year this new program, the Southwest Florida Warrior Health & Fitness Challenge at donated facilities by FGCU, designed to assist our veterans in returning to a healthy and productive lifestyle. The Challenge is a program for warriors run by warriors who have not only deployed to Iraq and Afghanistan, but have also been trained in the Massachusetts General Hospital and Red Sox medical and athletic world class traditions. Funds generated by the Kensington sponsored golf event last year made two program starts in June and September possible for our local SW FL Veterans. The next program start will be this May 2015. Brigadier General Jack Hammond (U.S. Army ret.), Executive Director of Home Base, Michael Allard, COO, and Roger Knight, Veterans Outreach Director Home Base will be present at the Reception. Approximately 30 SW FL

2

veterans and Families will also be available to share their experiences. Red Sox Manager, John Farrell will also be present during the reception. The Saturday reception is complimentary for all Kensington members, however, reservations are necessary since space is limited. Reservations can be made with the Front Desk by calling 649-4440. The annual Golf Tournament will take place on Sunday, February 22nd. The program will begin with an informal lunch at 11:15 am followed by a ceremony at 12:30 pm and the shotgun start at 1:00 pm. A number of veteran and celebrity guests have been invited to participate in the scramble for which there will be a short awards ceremony afterwards. We have a simultaneous Family event while golf is ongoing for Veterans and Families at our Pool arranged by fellow member and event Committee member Joe Basli. The entrance fee for the tournament is $200 for Kensington members and $250 for non-members. All who wish to play may sign up in the Golf Shop. Spots are limited so sign-ups will be accepted on a first come, first serve basis. We look forward to seeing you at the Club the weekend of February 21st and 22nd!

The General Manager

A Note from Kellie

Dear Members & Families, Love is in the air! February obviously includes Valentine’s Day, but also brings the high season stretch of absolutely lovely weather! Why do we call it the “high season”? Is it because of the heightened number of activities, traffic, Costco crowds and the angst that goes along with it? I think it’s better to look at it as a (legal!) high and a sense of euphoria (def: A feeling of great happiness or well being). Sometimes I/ we need to remind ourselves about the things in life that really matter, like a key point our founding fathers penned over 200 years ago, “the pursuit of Happiness”. A book that was recommended to the entire staff during our fall training is entitled “Happiness” by Douglas A. Smith. In it, he sums up what it means to be happy: “Happy people have an underlying predominant sense of well-being and contentment. They remember the past with peace, anticipate the future with confidence and experience and live in the present with joy and exuberance. This attitude is sourced from a life integrated by meaningful purpose and sound principles and enhanced by healthy relationships and appropriate pleasure”. Why do I bring this up? As we sit in traffic, get blocked out of the sample line at Costco or get our tee time moved an hour, happiness is still all around us! From the stretch of perfect weather, the great activities and services available at your Club, your friends and family, and the fact that we’ve all chosen to be part of this great Club in paradise! I certainly love it! I hope you do too! Happy Valentine’s Month! Cheers,

Our New Member Orientation was fun, informative and well attended. Chef Ralph won the “Battle of the Best Booth” trophy with his wow-factor spoon light bites and stellar presentation. The big winners of the day were Keith & Margret Gould both securing a prize for the Kensington Kuiz raffle drawing. It was great to see our new members making connections with fellow members and the Kensington Team. The next New Member Orientation, which is open to all members, is planned for March. Stay tuned for details. The February Community Open House will be Sunday, February 8th from 1-4pm. If you have family or friends who are exploring their options, please invite them out to get a snapshot of all there is to offer here at Kensington both Club and residential. Please feel free to stop by my office or call me anytime at (239) 213-1983 or ksprague@kensingtoncc.com with any questions you might have about your membership options, to upgrade your benefits or make changes for the future. Please welcome our newest members to the Kensington family: Andrew & Diana Gross (Resident Preview EXEC III Golf) – The Gross’s purchased a home on Kensington High Street recently and reside seasonally in Northbrook, IL. Kevin Story (Resident Preview Exec 1 Golf) – He is in the banking business and resides in NYC. Thomas & Judy Tice (Resident Preview Golf) –They are seasonal residents from Lake Forest, Illinois, and recently purchased a home on High Court in the community.

Social Activities S o c i a l C h at

Can you believe we are already in the middle of a whirlwind social season? Our past events have been a great success, especially the Venetian Masked Ball! Beautifully dressed members, a fabulous band and wonderful food made this an extraordinary evening! Congrats to the Co-Chairs Jane Specht & Ginger Hitt. Coming up this month, we have the Ladies High Tea on February 10th. This promises to be a delightful afternoon with three outstanding speakers. On Saturday, February 14th, a romantic evening is planned for our Valentine’s Dinner Dance. There will be a limited a la carte menu and you can dance the night away to the sounds of “Made In Brooklyn”. We have two new exciting events planned in March. Starting with “Strut your Mutt” Pooch Party on Sunday, March 1st. This will give the membership an opportunity to show off their beloved four legged friends. The proceeds from the entry fee will benefit the Naples Humane Society. You can pick up an entry form or request it be sent via email at the front desk at the Clubhouse. Back by popular demand, Viva Las Vegas will be held Thursday, March 5th. Our lounge act will be “The Rocket Man” with his Elton John tribute. An “All You Can Eat” Vegas Style buffet will be served first and all the professionals will be back for black jack, roulette and craps. High Stakes Texas Hold’em will be limited to 27 players. Sign up early and don’t miss the opportunity to win some great prizes. If you don’t know how to play blackjack or the other games, we will be offering lessons through our Live & Learn series on Monday, March 2nd. On Friday, March 13th you are invited to attend Joey & Maria’s Wedding. Now in its 18th year, this fun evening will be just like a real Italian wedding set in the 60’s, except the bridal party and family are all actors. You’ll have a great meal, good music and may even catch the bouquet! Make sure to check the Kronicle for the details of these events and all the great “live and learns” we have planned. We would like to thank our wonderful Social Committee this year for all their hard work, along with Bret, Chef Ralph and our great staff, that have made these events successful. See you at the Club,

Golf From the Rough Littoral Shelves

By definition a littoral (pronounced literal) shelf is the area within a body of water that comprises the shoreline above and below the median water mark. These areas are usually designated for flora and/or fauna and are maintained as environmentally sensitive areas (ESA). When Kensington was being planned The US Army Core of Engineers (ACOE) and South Florida Water Management District (SWFMD) mandated that the developers had to create wetlands to offset the planned improved structures that make up the residential and common areas of Kensington. These ESA’s consist of the 2 preserves and the buffer areas around the preserves which are 23 acres and the Littoral shelves within the lakes, which equal 3.28 acres. All of these areas underwent annual inspections and documentation by SFWMD to show that they were being maintained to a specific standard and in 2005 we were granted a certification that stated we had fulfilled the requirements of the regulating agencies. We are still required to photo document the current conditions of the ESA’s annually as well as submit quarterly water use data, lake levels and rainfall received to SFWMD which hopefully relays the importance of these areas as a part of the community. Why were we required to fulfill so many obligations for such a small percent of the 370 acres that comprises Kensington? In one word, Habitat! A habitat is an ecological or environmental area that is inhabited by a particular species of animal, plant or other type of organism. The lakes and littoral shelves have created an incredible habitat that plays host to too many fish, bird, amphibian, mammal and insect species to list but the main draw is the planted areas. As is evident by the vast number of birds that have inhabited our community the littoral areas provide an abundant food source that is a big draw to the other species. They are also a refuge for nesting and

ACERS CLUB Steve Manley Luc Courchene Norb Florek Tom McCarron David Wright Myra DeLong

The plants within the lake serve 2 other very important functions that have nothing to do with animals but everything to do with environment. Any vegetation within a lake needs nutrients to thrive and survive. Being that we are a subtropical climate with a lot of annual rainfall our landscapes require additional fertilizers that can accidentally be discharged directly into the lakes or run subsurface through the groundwater. In either event any aquatic plants can help to filter out all of these nutrients and provide a better water quality. The other function is to reduce the occurrence and severity of erosion from the lake banks. As many of you are probably aware, KPMA is investigating a lake bank renovation due to many years of erosion. The problems are the worst where roof and sheet flow runoff is not controlled in areas where there are no aquatic plants. If you observe the littoral shelves throughout the property there are no major issues with erosion because the plants act as a stopper preventing the soil from moving over the surface. They also stop the wave action which can loosen the soil particles at the lake edge which can further increase soil loss. I have spoken with many residents over the years that prefer a sterile lake shore which I have always rebutted with the many benefits of aquatic plants. From habitat formation to erosion control to water quality and most importantly being a bird magnet, it is evident that the use of aquatic plants cannot only add beauty to our community but also help to improve the environment and save money over time.

Fitness & Spa

Greetings, It is February and that means our thoughts turn to VALENTINES DAY, LOVE, and RELATIONSHIPS! Here at the Fitness Center we are thinking about the various relationships we share and came up with many different ones. As the Fitness and Spa Staff, we interact with each other, but even more importantly, we interact with all of the members who come into the Fitness Center. Our relationships in the capacity of a Trainer or Therapist are very important to us. Training one on one, teaching a class, or giving a facial or massage, gives us the opportunity to know you better. Instilling a feeling of caring in a “loving” way when we execute any of our services is number one!! When you join a class, you are given the opportunity to meet other members and expand friendships. Have you ever thought of doing your workout with a “buddy”? This holds you accountable to show up for your workout and also keeps you more motivated since you will be spending quality exercise time with your “buddy”. We are giving some SPA VALENTINE’S SPECIALS during the month of February. What nicer gift for the” love of your life” than a gift of a massage or facial. Michael, our Chair Massage Therapist, is offering a” Buy One, Give One, to the One You Love” beginning February 1st through Valentine’s Day, February 14th. Dohl is offering the gift of a European Bliss Organic Facial which includes a scalp, neck, and shoulder massage along with a facial for 60 minutes at a 10% discount for $54. We are happy to announce that we have a new location for our Yoga classes. It is in a very convenient location and will only take 5 to 10 minutes max to drive there. The Instructor has a studio on her property and can teach Kensington Members on Monday and Fridays at 9 am. Please contact Marion via her e-mail address, mjohnson@ kensingtoncc.com or her cell 239-293-7123 to sign up for the class and for further information on directions. There is no obligation long term, but we would like to be sure there is an interest up front. The class is $10 per person per session.

Remember to sign up at the Fitness Center for our Conscious Cuisine LIVE with Ralph on Thursday, February 19th at 5 pm at the Clubhouse. We encourage couples to attend. After all, isn’t it true that more and more men are getting creative in the kitchen also! Although Valentine’s Day comes only once a year, it is a good reminder to us to make our actions, as well as our words as positive and “loving” to one another throughout the whole year! Looking forward to seeing you actively working out in the Fitness Center! Happy Valentine’s Day to you all,
