A Message From

The General Manager I hope your resolutions are easy enough to adhere to as we move through the New Year. Whether it is changing your diet, exercise regimen or working on your personal or professional goals, I wish you all the best of luck. My professional resolution for our management team and staff is to keep the momentum rolling from the last few months of 2015 through the entire year. The festive fun of the holiday season may be behind us; however, 2016 is looking positive for Kensington. The energy within the Food and Beverage Department has been outstanding. Chef Ralph’s weekly features are a hit, with many members requesting some items to be put on the menu permanently. Chef Ralph, along with Food and Beverage Director Bret Borshell, present a dinner menu with more options than ever before. The menu recognizes that personal preferences, lifestyles and health concerns all impact our member and guest choices. So whether you are looking for a selection with less than 500 calories, a tasty appetizer, a gluten-free meal or a thick steak, you will relish an evening at the Club. Even though Mother Nature hasn’t cooperated; the Wednesday Grill Nights have made raving fans out of our members who braved the chill. The social calendar is packed with activities and many events are selling out; please make your reservations early and often. The Supper Club in January had many members claiming the event surpassed their expectations. In February, mark your calendar as we host the “Paradise Party” and a Valentines Dinner Dance. Looking forward into March we get a little bizarre with a “Parrot Head Party.” Also, remember to save room for the Home Base charitable events and share in the spirit of philanthropy right here in Kensington.

El Nino is all what it has been hyped up to be and Corey and his staff have responded; we are truly blessed to have a superintendent of his caliber at our club. Dick and our golf staff have had their challenges as well and are performing like the true professionals they are. The Member / Guest days have been a hit along with the Sunday Socials and the Nine and Dine. The golf shop will gear up for the Men’s Invitational next month. Over in tennis Karl has rebounded from his injury and he and Nicole are keeping up with the season’s busy tennis schedule. The transition at the Fitness Center has been seamless as Kristy continues to listen to our memberships’ suggestions and fulfill their needs. As 2016 continues to unfold, we look forward to another significant year at the Club filled with joyful memories for you to share with your family and friends. Warm regards,

David Krzywonos

LORIJANE GRAHAM, MEMBERSHIP AND MARKETING DIRECTOR

What an exciting time at Kensington! The holidays have passed, but the fun is far from over. Working with the Membership Committee, we’ve come up with some very exciting membership opportunities for you to share with your friends and guests. Details will be available soon so keep an eye on the Kronicle, email blasts from Carol and our digital message board outside of my office. Many of our new families join because they already know Members here and have heard what a wonderful Club Kensington is, and how proud our Members are to belong. Others are new residents purchasing a home and supporting the Club. Still, it is you, our current members, that can help our membership goal by bringing your friends and neighbors to events or to play golf or tennis. Your Club offers so many fun and engaging events for everyone. The Committee has made recommendations for some attractive incentives to help us with our Membership goals. More information on the incentives and new opportunities will be provided soon.

Please welcome the newest Members of the Club:

Food & Beverage As I enter my fourth season at Kensington, I can’t help but feel grateful to work with so many hard working men and women. First, I wanted to compliment the two managers in Food & Beverage and sing their praises! Domenic Volpi recently received a coveted Business Management Institute Club Managers Association of America Scholarship (CMAA). Please join me in congratulating Domenic as he continues improving his knowledge of this awesome industry and works towards attaining his Certified Club Manager’s designation. Rachael Groman joined our team just over three months ago. Since that time, Rachael has confirmed over $200,000 of upcoming parties in 2016, ‘17 and ‘18. I am certain these two rising club manager superstars will have a dramatic impact on Kensington and the industry around them. They are setting the pace!

Culinary Corner

Hello from Kensingtons’ kitchen! As I approach my two-year anniversary, I need to thank all the employees that take the time to help our culinary team be successful. As I look back on the improvements we have made to the culinary program in these two years, I feel that we have become more consistent in our day-to-day operation and we are always striving to do better. This year we have started the weekly e-mail blast letting our members know what they can expect from the upcoming week’s dining options. The Wednesday night Grill Night was upgraded with fried shrimp and a huge salad bar, a sure crowd pleaser. We opened up the Mayfair lounge on Tuesday and Friday evenings for more casual dining. The Food and Beverage team have been working to secure catering events to offset the department’s expenses. We already have 17 quality functions booked for this season. We know that there are many dining options in Naples during season, but why wait on long lines for a table. Make Kensington your first choice for dining; make a reservation and avoid the hassle of Fifth Avenue or Mercado. Enjoy great food at your own Club. We offer a variety of quality foods and innovative beverages at fair pricing. Some of the special items I put on the menu are well below market value. For example, we had a Prime 18-ounce T-bone steak for two at $36. At any other restaurant, that would be $52 plus, not including soup, salad or vegetables. Here at Kensington, you get it all. If you haven’t been in for dinner in a long time, come on in and check out the menus and give us another try. Some members who haven’t dined here in a number of years are pleasantly surprised with the nice dining experience. So if you’re planning to join us, please call our receptionist, Nicole, to reserve your table today or make your reservation online. If you’re looking for something special or you would like to book a party (large or small), please contact Rachael Groman, our new Banquets and Events Manager, and she would be more than happy to help with your every need. There are many employees behind the scenes who make it all possible in the Culinary Department and I want to thank them for their hard work and dedication in making Kensington the very best, because I am only as good as my staff. Please remember that we offer a knife sharpening service for our members, so if you are in need of an edge, please drop your knives off and allow two days for this service. Also, if you need any culinary tips please feel free to give me a call or shoot me an e-mail with your question.

From the Fa i r way s Our weather may not be perfect so far, but it’s a long season and hopefully we just need a sweater now and then, not a rain coat. Please remember the Golf Clinics every Wednesday at 10:30am. A list of topics is included on this page. Your Handicap Committee has been busy learning our new GolfHits program, which will assist them to more efficiently track all score posting. The matches for the 2016 Kensington Cup have begun and we are pleased to announce the Men’s 20th Invitational is currently full, but we are still encouraging teams to submit entry forms for the alternate positions. February events include: Presidents Cup, Men’s Guest Day and the Senior and Grand Senior Club Championship. The ladies are busy in February with the Presidents’ Cup, Guys and Dolls, and Solheim Cup. The next Guest Day will be March 10th. The Couples Invitational is staged and promises to be a great event. A special thank you to Captains Geri Klemm and Steve Scoville and all ladies and gentlemen members of our Interclub Teams who have been representing Kensington throughout the countywide competition. We hope you are enjoying your winter season and thank you for supporting your Golf Program.

El Nino Well, El Nino showed up just as expected and we are really starting to see the impacts in just a month’s time. As explained last month, the El Nino weather is below normal temps, above normal and frequent rainfall, as well as cloud cover that can extend for weeks at a time. In just a short period we have experienced several impacts to the golf course, including a lot of disease pressure, excessive wear from carts, slower playing conditions and many impacts to golfers. Not only is the course wetter than normal, on most rain days we are either struggling to open or are just having some not-so-desirable playing conditions. Unfortunately, the forecast is not going to change anytime soon so we are using our experience to avoid any major issues and we will do everything in our power to provide great playing conditions. Improving Cart Usage

This year we have been attempting to use less ropes and stakes for traffic control, but I am not very happy with the results. With the wet conditions and being in peak season, there is simply too much damage to cart path edges, fairway entry and exit points and overall travel areas for me to be comfortable going forward status quo. I am hoping that with my final plea we can see some improvement in these areas before they are totally destroyed for the remainder of the season. In my observations I am seeing less use of the 90 degree rule, as is evident by the worn edges; a lot of driving and parking on the grass along the cart paths. It would also be a big benefit to the course if everyone attempted to avoid any areas (especially entry and exit points) that appeared to have already been “overused.” As I have stated and written many times, bermudagrass is a warm season grass that is very slow to recover during colder months. Unfortunately, the colder months coincide with our busiest time of year so a little more attentiveness and cooperation when using golf carts can go a long way to providing tournament conditions. If you need proof of what the course could look like under optimal growing and use conditions just take a look at the cart path only holes. ONLY YOU CAN PREVENT CART WEAR AND TEAR, ONLY YOU! Macho Fern Die-off If you have seen the barren areas on holes 11, 13 and 14, this was due to a sudden die-back of the Macho Fern that thrived for many years. This type of fern has no known pest and of all the people I have discussed this with, no one has seen this type of problem with such a reliable plant. We tried several corrective measures and sent out several samples for analysis but still did not find what may have been causing the fern to fail. As you can now see we have striped the area of all plant material because we are going to be replanting it with a variety of ornamental plants instead of going with a monoculture that can lead to similar problems. The best thing about the ferns that we won’t enjoy going forward is, they were free. We created all of those planted areas from propagating our own inventory. It was good while it lasted.
