A Message From

The General Manager Time waits for no one! A band from Britain wrote a song about this topic and I can agree with them. As we turn the calendar to March one notices our Club reaching the height of the season. In golf, the Men’s Invitational is followed by the final Ladies Guest Day and then their Club Championship. Tennis hosts a mixer and then heads east for the Miami Open Tournament. Aside from our bustling in-season dining schedule the Clubhouse will be active as our Art Guild hosts another “Kensington’s Got Talent.” The Parrot Head Party with Island Cuisine, Tequila and Rum concoctions should make you feel like you’re on the beach in paradise; wait a minute you are in Paradise! The month ends with all the events surrounding Easter; please check the Club calendar and reserve your spot early. While you are enjoying all the Club has to offer remember the Annual Meeting on Monday, March 14th, which is followed immediately by a Pasta Dinner. Chef Ralph, Bret and their teams have been exceeding our expectations and they are committed to continually raising the bar. Our whole staff has pride in all we do for our membership and I look forward seeing you and your guests make the most of Kensington.

Food & Beverage The season is going by incredibly fast. I hope you enjoyed the great events we hosted in February and were able to relax for a few nice meals at the Club. March is highlighted by a few great events. The Parrot Head Party will be a fun casual event at which the food, décor and entertainment will be a highlight for the month. Ladies wear your favorite tropical dress and men, this is a great opportunity to sport your favorite Tommy Bahama style shirt… and flip flops of course!! There are numerous other events taking place in March so please speak with Nicole at the reception desk. I wanted to dedicate the majority of my article to online reservations, a sort of “how to.”

Culinary Corner

Wow! It’s March already; where did February go? I guess time flies when you’re having fun, and the Food and Beverage team members are having fun. As we are finding out, the themed buffet dinners are very popular and I want to start by saying thank you to all the members who commented how much they enjoyed both the Asian and Italian themed buffets. I have spoken to a few members who did not attend either of the themed buffets because of past experiences, and they were disappointed that they missed out when they heard how enjoyable the dinners have been. As I’ve mentioned before, Kensington’s Food and Beverage program has changed and we are doing things differently these days. So if you haven’t been in for a while, please join us for lunch, dinner or one of our events… you just might be pleasantly surprised. Next year we are planning to do two themed buffets a month, switching between a few different themes.

Chef Ralph Cooking Demos

11:30am Arrival, 12:00pm Class begins $20 inclusive per person (includes a glass of wine)

Saturday, April 2nd

At our last cooking demo, we hosted 55 members and guests who all seemed to enjoy themselves. Thanks for all for your continued support in making these events successful and fun. If you missed out, we will try and squeeze a few more demos in before the end of season. We are also kicking around doing a green market right here at Kensington, where the members can come and buy fresh local produce and items from local vendors. We would look to sell some stocks and sauces as well. Stay tuned for more details. Our End of Season Party is fast approaching and this year we will take a trip to many ports of call, experiencing foods and decorations from around the world. Please make your reservations as soon as possible so you don’t miss out on this exciting event. This past month we did a private wine dinner for a member and their friends. At Kensington, we don’t often have the opportunity to cook outside the box, so when we have the opportunity we really enjoy it as much as the members who get to eat it. So if you’re looking for a really special night with great wine and food, look no further than Kensington. Reservations are still a challenge. With the availability of 80 more seats in the Mayfair Lounge, we ask that you PLEASE make a reservation whenever possible. Reservations are important for many reasons; it helps us to better staff for the evening, and, it helps prepare the right amount of food for the evening and sets us up so we can have better timing on beverage service. We encourage all members to make reservations to ensure that you will have a great dining experience. Please remember that we offer a knife sharpening service for our member, so if you are in need of an edge please drop your knives off and allow two days for this service. Also, if you need any culinary tips, please feel free to give me a call. Culinary regards,

M e r c h a n d i s e F o r e Yo u Typically March is a very busy month in the golf shop and we are well stocked with apparel and equipment to meet your needs. Come in to our bright and colorful shop. Thank you for supporting the Club and shopping in your golf shop. We appreciate that you consider shopping in our shop instead of going elsewhere and we love to see and visit with you when you do come in. A warm welcome to all tenants who are visiting this month and a reminder that member pricing is extended to all tenants. We have new product from Peter Millar, Bermuda Sands, Carnoustie and Gmac for the men. And for the ladies we have new product from Gretchen Scott, Bermuda Sands, Tail Active wear and Daily Sport. For the children there are dresses from Gretchen Scott. Please keep in mind that we are happy to process special orders for any sizes that may not be stocked, just ask any one of the golf shop staff members. I am scheduling additional equipment demo days with Ping and Callaway so that the new demo clubs will be out on the range for your convenience to practice with or take out on the course. Our staff will be out on the range to assist the manufacturer’s representative on those days. Take this opportunity to try out the new technology and consider replacing some clubs that may be a bit out dated. I will be posting the demo day dates and times in the Merchandise Fore You email blasts. On the apparel side I am scheduling trunk show dates with Daily Sport and Jofit. We will have our sales representatives here at the club with samples for you to see and try on. Look for dates and times in the upcoming Merchandise Fore You email blasts. I would like to extend a sincere thanks to all of you for making my first few months a Kensington so enjoyable. I appreciate your patience with me as I learn.

Golf From the Rough Snakes 101

With spring fast approaching I thought a little background information on the snakes of Southwest Florida might be an interesting and Goosebumps raising article. In actuality there are many misconceptions about snakes that hopefully can be cleared up but I am sure many of you are saying, “I don’t care, I hate them all!” as you shake off the willies. But as hard as it may be to believe, snakes are very beneficial in our tropical climate and even the bad ones serve a purpose in the population control of other unwanted pests. There are approximately 50 species of snakes in Florida ranging from the Ringneck (8-inches long) to the pythons (18 feet +) that freely roam the Everglades. You might be surprised to learn that only six of those are venomous snakes and even more surprisingly, you most likely would only encounter 4 of those in Southwest Florida. (I know “who cares they all deserve the shovel!”) I would like to give a little overview of the venomous species and touch on the most commonly spotted non-venomous snakes seen within Kensington.

Venomous Snakes The six species of dangerous snakes found in Florida include the Eastern Diamondback Rattlesnake, the Canebrake Rattlesnake, the Dusky Pygmy Rattlesnake, the Florida Cottonmouth, the Southern Copperhead and the Eastern Coral Snake. Of these, the Copperhead and Canebrake are rarely

seen in South Florida and are more commonly found in Central and North Florida. Of the remaining four venomous species, we have only encountered three of those species in the last 15 years that I have worked at Kensington totaling only eight known positive identifications of a poisonous snake. I will cover those four in order of the most common to the least common. Florida Cottonmouth- AKA a Water Moccasin (yes they are the same snake). We have had onlysix6 confirmed sightings of a Cottonmouth with a confirmed sighting being from someone that I know truly knows what a Cottonmouth looks like. Cottonmouths are usually mistaken for the more common and non-venomous Florida or Banded Watersnake, which we have a lot of here at Kensington. Obviously they share the same habitat of anywhere that has water nearby and even similar markings and characteristics that are usually found in venomous snakes, but most of what you see swimming along our shorelines is one of the non-venomous Watersnakes. Dusky Pygmy Rattlesnake- We have seen one pygmy rattler in my time here and it was actually found in a golf hole in 2001. These are most likely found in pine woods and palmettos and are overall very common in Florida just not here at Kensington. These are a very small member of the rattlesnake family but still can inflict serious pain. Eastern Coral Snake- We have seen one Coral snake on property that was found dead after being run over on High Street. The Coral snake is very similar to two nonvenomous snakes but is easily distinguished from those by remembering a jingle, “Red against black is a friend of Jack, red against yellow will kill a fellow.” Obviously the coral snake has red bands against yellow bands whereas the Scarlet and Scarlet Kingsnake have red bands next to black bands. Coral snakes are very isolated usually found hiding under logs or rocks and rarely seen in the open. Eastern Diamondback Rattlesnake- This very well known and highly dangerous snake has never been reported in Kensington mainly due to the roads surrounding our community acting as a barrier. They are found throughout Florida and will send out a rattling noise warning if you get too close. My advice would be to turn around and go the other way.

Non-venomous Snakes

3rd Annual KENSINGTON

LONG DRIVE INVITATIONAL

The 3rd Annual Long Drive contest was held Saturday January 8th. With eight of Kensington’s “strong men” competing for the title hitting into a strong breeze and on to a soft fairway each contestant hit five balls each. The grid was set at 40 yds. wide and 300 yds. long. When the day was done, Jonathan Reeve smashed a 262 yd. drive and emerged the winner over previous two- time champion Eric Richardson. The champion is memorialized by having the winning ball mounted on the perpetual trophy. Special thanks to event coordinator Bill Szustak.

The snakes that we see most of the time are beneficial animals within our tropical ecosystem mostly because they eat the other pests we don’t want around including rats, mice, insects and other snakes. The most often seen is the Black Rat Snake or Black Racer. This long, thin, black snake is usually seen roaming your yard and occasionally garage in search of a meal. They are easily identified by their white chin and although still scary to some, are very beneficial to our community. The second most common are the Watersnakes mentioned earlier. They hugely outnumber the Water Moccasins, and in most cases the snakes seen around the lakes are the nonpoisonous species. A couple other common species include the following; the Red Rat Snake (or Cornsnake), the Yellow Rat Snake, Coachwhips, Ringnecks and garter snakes, all of which are non-venomous. Lastly I had to mention the Pythons that are widely discussed in association with Everglades National Park. They have become thoroughly engrained within the park because they have no real predator to slow them down. They have spread into Collier County and have been spotted and/or killed at several golf courses that abut the Ten Thousand Islands. It is highly doubtful that we would get an established population at Kensington only because of the abundance of roads surrounding our community. Hopefully this has enlightened you that, although very dangerous, venomous snakes are not a big part of the wildlife that inhabits our community. Obviously the potential is always there in Florida of encountering a dangerous snake but common sense is usually the biggest factor in surviving an encounter in one piece. First, we need to stay out of their homes (like digging for a golf ball in the rocks that surround the lakes) and last, if you see or hear a snake close to you, slowly back away until you are clear of the threat. If you would like to learn more about your slithering neighbors visit www. floridabackyardsnakes.com for some great information and detailed pictures of all of the snakes of Florida.

PORTS OF CALL

Friday, April 8th

Lakeside, beginning at 6pm Brett Foreman Band

Can you hold your breath for 30 seconds? How many times a day do you exhale a BIG sigh of relief? Breath is an important element in your fitness regimen and should be practice weekly. Building lung capacity is a vital goal of endurance athletes. One cue I use when training to help people practice breath is: “Smell the roses and blow out the candles.” You should see your chest and abdominal cavity expand, this insurers you are using diaphragmatic breath.

$89++ Open Bar

Ports include Asia, Caribbean, South American and Mediterranean Food and Wine at each port Please make your reservations online, or call the Receptionist at 239.649.4440

One way you can build lung capacity is to weekly challenge your heart and breath with cardiovascular exercise. My favorite is interval training. Another way is to join Ali Gardino, our new water aerobics instructor, on Tuesday’s and Thursday’s at 10:00am. Ali will be sure to get your body moving in a fun & healthy workout. Health & Happiness
