A Message From
The General Manager Dear Members & Families, It’s hard to believe that Memorial Day has just passed us by and June is in our sights. Another season has flown by…a great one for the books! Looking back to early April with our “Change of Seasons” Party, it was a terrific success despite the weather mishap around 5:30 pm. The staff rallied together and took apart everything that had been set for the night while the rain came down on them. As soon as it stopped, everything was dried off and returned to its original place just in time for your delayed (per our request) arrival. The new format with heavy hors d’oeuvres and desserts versus our regular sit down dinner was well received, the outside dance floor was packed and a great night was had by all. Derby Day! We had over 90 cheering fans as American Pharaoh crossed the finish line. A huge thank you to Lew Bryan, Mike O’Kane, Joe Basli and
Richard Dias for providing the first rate organization! Let’s see if American Pharaoh can win the Triple Crown in June since the Preakness is already in the bag. Reciprocal season is in full swing and we have hosted many members from local clubs who are taking advantage of playing our beautiful course. Don’t miss the opportunity to play in the golf tournaments on July 4th and Labor Day (September 7th). Both dates will also be accompanied by barbecues. Heading into the summer months, we begin our golf course aerification schedule. The first begins June 1st through June 8th, then July 13th through July 20th and the last is our two week closing from September 8th through the 23rd. The Club will be open for dinner on Tuesdays and Fridays during the first two aerifications. Watch out for project updates via email during our September closing. The
slower time as you know is a great time for deep cleanings, including power washing and painting areas in need of attention before the new season arrives. The Golf and Social Calendars for next season are almost complete. A great deal of time has been spent by the Committees and Staff to balance the calendars so you can enjoy all of our events! For those of you staying with us in Naples over the summer, we look forward to seeing you at the Club, especially with our Friday night bands in the months of June, July and August. To those of you have left or are set to head north, have a great summer and we’ll see you in the fall.
The Clubhouse will be closed on Mondays beginning June 1st through October 26th, except Monday, September 7th, Labor Day.

A Note from Kellie Summer in Florida has come knocking. Drink plenty of fluids and most of all have fun out there and enjoy yourself!
We appreciate any comments and suggestions you may have. We’ll be sure to forward it to the appropriate department. Please email us at comments@kensingtoncc.com.
The 2015/2016 Membership Committee has hit the ground running with two principal initiatives; New Member Integration and Retention, and Membership Categories. The sub committees are committed to working through the summer to research our past policies, peer comparisons, and develop better ways to bring new members into the fold and to update and enhance membership offerings. The marketing department is working on new programs scheduled to launch in the fall. Stay tuned for incentives to entice new memberships and a reward program for members and realtors who refer new members to the club. Some of the other projects include a new Club brochure and a national marketing campaign through social media. We are also conjoining our sales opportunities with Bret and Rebecca through private events. The calendar will include networking events and mixers for clients, potential members, and the community to showcase our Club. The Membership Options 101 Forum was held in April and attended by over 35 members. The feedback was positive and we will schedule this forum again next year. If you have any questions that I can address, please feel free to contact me and I will attend to it as soon as possible. Have a great summer, and stay hydrated!!

This is served Tuesday – Sunday from 11:30am-3:00pm in the Mayfair Grill. Tuesday and Friday evenings we offer a “Wine & Dine Advantage”. This provides you with a complimentary bottle of house wine when you order two “Clubhouse Selections”. You can substitute two well drinks if you prefer. To celebrate the summer season we feature a number of great bands. We will be offering a limited choice menu for $32.95++ per person. The Wine and Dine Advantage special will also be honored these evenings.

Gil Blake • July 10th - Enjoy the award winning sounds of Bill Colletti and Fuse • July 31st - featuring the Double Dare Dance Duo • August 14th - We are excited to headline the Terry Cooper duo. This is a smaller version of the Terry Cooper Band. • August 28th - will sure to be a sellout with the Wendy Renee duo. Wendy has packed the dance floors last season for her single, sold out show! Please come in as often as you can through the summer. This is a tremendous help to the food & beverage staff. The busier we are in the dining room, the more staff we are able to keep over the summer. This is critical in maintaining and improving our consistency. Thank you for your support.
It is with great pride and excitement that I am able to announce Domenic Volpi’s promotion to Assistant Food & Beverage Manager. Culinary Corner
As I look back on this past season, I wanted to thank the membership for their support as we continue to take the culinary department to new heights. I also wanted to thank the entire culinary staff for working very hard this season, going the extra mile to make it right and taking great pride in making all our events something special. After my first year here at Kensington, I look back on how I could have worked more efficiently. This past year I found myself spending a lot of time making menus and sitting in meetings during the heart of the season which takes me away from cooking. For next season, I plan to have 90% of the menus done for all the parties and events by July 1st. This way we would only have to tweak them as we move forward. What does this mean for our members? If you are chairing an event, please share your ideas with Bret and I as soon as possible. We will take all ideas into consideration during the planning process. After that we will then plan the event and make sure it fits the budget. Other benefits about creating the menus earlier are that it will help with the marketing, planning, costs and implementation of all parties and events for the season. This will eliminate many time consuming menu meetings so Bret and I can be running the operation from the floor and not from our office.
from the menu and receive a bottle of house wine or two well drinks on us! We appreciate your support at the Club during the summer months as it helps us keep our great staff employed. Have a great summer and travel safe wherever your summer journeys take you. Culinary regards,
Chef Ralph C Feraco CEC AAC
Father’s Day Barbecue Sunday, June 21st • 11:30am-2pm $17.95++
Next season, I plan to hold some cooking classes. There will be two kinds of classes; one set will be a series of “hands on” cooking in Kensington’s kitchen where we’ll focus on knife skills and sharpening, then we’ll move on to making healthy foods and conclude with how to make an easy holiday dinner. The other classes will include “live demos” where you’ll get to enjoy what I’ve cooked after the demo has finished. I think this would be a fun activity for ALL members to get involved with and will also give you the opportunity to ask me any cooking questions you might have. For the members who are here year round, please remember that we are open Tuesday and Friday for dinner. Enjoy our Wine & Dine Advantage Program on these nights by ordering any two Clubhouse entrees

Golf From the Rough By one definition- bunkers are shallow pits filled with sand and generally incorporating a raised lip or barrier, from which the ball is more difficult to play than from grass.
Per the Rules of Golf- a “bunker” is a hazard consisting of a prepared area of ground, often a hollow, from which turf or soil has been removed and replaced with sand or the like. Please take note that neither of these definitions reference the many design and maintenance differences that can be found between bunkers on the same course or different courses. Neither do the definitions take into account the varying skill level of the golfer trying to recover from the bunker. Is there any wonder why bunkers are the most scrutinized playing area of a golf course? There are no design or maintenance specifications other than put sand in a hole with a raised lip! There are no maintenance SOP’s for angled sand vs. round sand, machine rake vs. hand rake, depth of sand, hard or soft, how tall should the lip be, what color sand, should the rakes be fan rakes, smooth or brushes, etc….. With all of these variables in mind, how in the world do you get 500 people (of varying skill levels) to agree to, “What is a perfect bunker?” In the early years of golf, bunkers were termed from areas sheep would huddle out of the North Atlantic winds and the turf would die from their eating and sleeping. Because there was no turf and the underlying earth was mostly sand, the term bunker or sand trap was coined to define that specific part of the course. It wasn’t until 1821 that the term bunker appeared in the rules at Royal St. Andrew and the bunker was considered a hazard.
Maintaining bunkers in the early years consisted of whatever direction the wind was blowing. Often there were rocks, even boulders that would be unearthed by the winds which obviously were later termed obstructions. There were animal footprints, tracks from other golfers and other debris that lined the sandy area and probably during this time the phrase “Don’t hit it there” was born. As bunkers evolved and became hazards they started to design them to be so penalizing that hitting into one of them was near impossible to recover and they were given names like “Hell Bunker”, “Stroke, “Kitchen” and the “Beardies”. Forward to the United States post WWII when golf really began to grow in popularity and looking at a lot of the early designs of even the most famous architects, the bunkers were considered extremely penalizing. Oakmont used to rake deep furrows into their bunkers making it virtually impossible to hit a recovery shot. Bunkers like the Church Pews and Hell’s Half Acre were designed and many of those designers didn’t believe that bunkers should be maintained. The picture below shows what Alister MacKenzie thought a bunker should be.
MacKenzie standing in the Scabs bunker at Crystal Downs.
Try doing that today! Well as the game grew, so did the calls to make it somewhat easier because not everyone was a pro. Then the golf boom and mass production of not only golf courses but golf communities exploded and the emphasis shifted away from difficulty to fairness. And don’t ever deny what effect the Augusta syndrome has had on not just bunkers, but every aspect of golf maintenance and design. Crisp edges and snow white sand became the desire of every club in the states. Today bunkers have become as expensive to maintain as the greens and there are as many varying opinions of what constitutes a good bunker as there are on who makes the best golf equipment. At the end of the day and looking back at the origination of the bunkers wouldn’t it make more sense and cost less cents to just leave them be and bring back the sheep to maintain them? After all, it is a hazard so don’t hit it there.
Steve Scoville hosted Mark Lye, 18 year PGA Tour Veteran and 18 year Golf Channel Analyst recently at KGCC. Joining them from the “I” tees were Hagan Andersen and Dale Voorheis. Mark is a longtime Naples resident, but had never played a round at Kensington. He was very impressed with our course from the “Tips“!

Do’s and Don’ts When Out In Florida’s
Hot Sun Do’s
Stay Hydrated - It is important to drink generous amounts of fluid throughout the day, not just while you are in the heat. Wear the Right Clothes – Opt for loose-fitting, natural fabrics that will wick sweat away from your body and keep you cool. Protect your skin with sunscreen. Limit Sun Exposure – Plan outdoor activities for either early or late in the day, and attempt to stay in the shade as much as possible.
Across the Net This summer will bring new physical changes to the tennis facility- already we have painted the doors to the restrooms, pressure washed and painted the utility shed and surrounding poles behind the tennis shop. Our final project will be the resurfacing of all seven courts. The tennis calendar has been finalized – please note pertinent dates, any questions call the tennis shop for more information. Results from the 2015 Club Championships~ Men’s Open Doubles – Phil McKee and Eric Chung defeated Frank Kiningham and Lou Kastan 7-6, 6-2. The first set took 1 hour. and 45 minutes to complete, a Kensington record. Mixed Doubles – Phil McKee and Annie Potts defeated Frank Kiningham and Chris Elkins 6-4, 6-4.
Pace Yourself – Take frequent breaks when working or playing in the heat.
Men’s 6.5 Combo Doubles – Lanny Baird and John Anderson defeated Ron Ferreri and Joe Dyer 6-1, 6-3.
Don’ts
Congratulations to all!
Drink Alcohol and Caffeine – Both are diuretics reducing fluid levels vital to the body’s temperature regulation. To avoid cramps, also limit sugary drinks. Eat Hot Foods and Heavy Meals – Heavy meals, especially those high in protein, raise your metabolism, adding heat to your body. Also, avoid hot soups and drinks. Melon, salads and cold soups are excellent options.
Warning Signs
If you observe symptoms of heat exhaustion or stroke, call for medical assistance, move the victim out of the sun, and try to cool the victim using cool wet towels or a fan.

Fitness & Spa
Hello to Everyone Near and Far, Since we are covering three months in this edition, it will appear that our summer is going to fly by…..which I am sure it actually will!! This will give all of us here in the Fitness Center time to catch our breath, regroup, and brain storm new ideas for events for next season!! We hope you will also find time, whether you are here or away, to enjoy different activities and spend more time with your families. “Health and Wellness” has become the theme and key words in the Fitness Industry. It has been defined as “a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity.” Therefore, balancing our lives in all these areas can be our greatest challenge, but it certainly makes sense. We all know today that studies are proving more and more, and the medical system is finally promoting it as well, that exercise is a primary requisite to prevent many diseases. Done regularly, exercise can lower blood pressure, improve cholesterol levels, reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease, and may even lower our risk of developing some cancers. Staying physically active is vital for maintaining strong muscles, healthy bones, and limber joints, enabling us to carry out our daily tasks with vigor. And it is just as important for your brain for mental clarity and focus. It is a “reboot”, a recharge for the soul. With all that being said, it can also help control weight…. and obesity itself raises the risk of many chronic diseases. Since many of our members do not leave for the entire season, we do not want you to think we are closing down all of our activities. John, certified Personal Trainer and Level 1 certified TPI Golf Fitness Instructor, will be offering a Total Body Conditioning Class for Guys and Gals. The class will be held on Wednesdays, which began on May 20th, at 9:00 am. The cost is $15.00 per person and the minimum
number of participants is 5. Members who had Personal Training sessions with John throughout the season such as Julie McCarron, Susan Smith and Chip Whalen all give him rave reviews!! Please call us or sign up yourself at the Fitness Center, where a sheet is available at the front desk. Hot or rainy weather will not deter John from holding the class since he will use the equipment and other areas inside the Fitness Center to give you a challenging workout! John will adjust his exercises to meet each person’s individual ability. Kristy will still be offering Pilates Reformer Classes on Monday and Wednesday at 8:30 am & 9:30 am and on Fridays at 9:00 am. Cost is $35.00 per person and there is availability for four participants per class. As you know, Kristy’s classes have been very popular and what better time than now to experience one of them for yourself. Personal Training and Spa Services will be available through out the summer as well, so please do not hesitate to call us to schedule an appointment. And last but not least, we are still encouraging members to take advantage of FREE ORIENTATIONS for STRENGTH MACHINE or CARDIO EQUIPMENT given by John. These appointments can be scheduled with John directly by calling his cell 239-777-2050. Michael, our Chair Massage Therapist, will be available to give chair massages and you can always call Michael directly on his cell to set up an appointment….239-272-3121. There are Reciprocal Members and Summer Members so we hope that these members will make use of the Fitness Center along with Tennis, Golf and Dining Occasions. It is a great opportunity for you to enjoy these activities at Kensington Golf and Country Club and discover the beautiful and friendly environment we provide.
