PORTS OF CALL

Friday, April 8th Lakeside, beginning at 6pm Brett Foreman Band A Message From

The General Manager I would like to begin by congratulating our new 2016/2017 Board of Directors. I am delighted to welcome Dick Adams, Bob O’Brien, Tony Panza and Randy Specht who were each newly elected to the Board at the Annual Meeting of the Membership on March 14th. I look forward to working with them, along with the five existing Board Members, to ensure Kensington remains one of the finest clubs in the Naples area. I must thank our retiring Vice President, Steve Manley for his six years of service, Past Club Secretary, Joe Basli and Directors Bob Marino and Bill Lutz, for their years of dedicated service. The continued success of Kensington is dependent upon the unyielding commitment of Board Members and Committee volunteers who give up their time and share common goals of extraordinary club experiences and continuous improvement. Our professional staff is focused on delivering the vision and we are fortunate to work in this fine club, your “home away from home.” I trust you have enjoyed the calendar of events throughout the year! We are looking forward to the Change of Seasons celebration on Friday, April 8th. The event has a “Ports of Call” theme and I am sure Bret and Chef Ralph will dazzle your palate once again. While it may be a little early, let me be the first to wish everyone a happy and healthy summer. For those members who head north to their summer homes, or embark on vacations to other parts of the country or around the world, I bid safe travels to you all! For our year-round members, who remain in Southwest Florida, we promise a summer season of dining and recreation keeping you active and entertained in our tropical paradise. Warm Regards,

David Krzywonos 2

Food & Beverage It has been wonderful to receive so many nice comments about food and service this past month. The Food and Beverage team appreciates your feedback. It both helps us get through these busiest of weeks, as well as identifies areas where we can improve. In regard to a la Carte dining, the pace of seating has been critical to our success. We served over 200 dinners for the first time in Kensington history this past month. Thank you for your support! The best thing an a la Carte guest can do to help us succeed in these situations is to make a reservation and be prepared to sit down at the appropriate time. Thank you for your understanding and continued support with the reservation process.

Passover April 22nd at 6pm Passover Seder Dinner

Seder Dinner $29.95++

Friday, April 22, 6:00pm

Cocktails and appetizers begin at 6:00pm in the Mayfair Grill

April brings one of the best social events of the year, The Change of Seasons Party, Friday April 8. We have learned over the past few years how to better implement great events outdoors. This year’s Change of Season’s Party should be incredible. Our theme is “Ports of Call.” This allows Chef and me to create different themed stations throughout the lakeside courtyard. I will also be pairing wines from around the world to accompany Chef’s cuisine. One thing that is different this year with our Change of Season’s Party is the “open bar.” Yes, the $89++ price includes all of your favorite liquor, beer and wines by the glass all night! Your liquor choices are not limited to our well. We will be pouring all of our top-shelf selections throughout the evening at no additional cost. We hope you would agree the $89++ price becomes a good value knowing this new format. Kensington is becoming a fierce competitor (with your support) in the local and regional wedding market. This year we have a record number of upcoming high-end weddings. Thank you Rachael for your hard work in selling these fabulous events, and thank you Domenic for your tireless hours to help implement them.

LAST Grill Night on April 27th!

I wanted to close by thanking the entire F&B staff for their tireless work to make this season so fantastic. Both the culinary and the front of the house employees have worked long hours striving to exceed your expectations. Also, I wanted to thank Carol and the Reception team for behind-the-scenes help. Thank you! I have been impressed with everyone’s work ethic and willingness to go above and beyond. Please join me in thanking them prior to what will be many of your departures this month. For those who will be leaving for the season in April, you will be missed. It has been our pleasure taking great care of you this year. Just wait until you see what we have in store for you during the 2017 season!

5:30pm to 7:30pm

Sincerely,

It was great seeing a lot of members and their families at our Easter Brunch and we are looking forward to Passover dinner on April 22nd. Please make sure to make your reservations. The weekend of April 8, the staff will start preparing for the Change of Season Party. This year, join us on a culinary cruise around the world with the Ports of Call theme. There will be foods from South America featuring empanadas, Argentina BBQ, Argentinean pink shrimp; foods from Asia with Asian Pork riblets, general tso chicken, miso salmon; food from the Bahamas with Conch Fritters and tropical mahi mahi; foods from Italy with lobster bolognaise, tomato and mozzarella, roasted porchetta; and, foods from the Greek Isles with Classic Greek salad, lamb chops and baklava. This year’s party will be one to remember with lots of food stations for you to enjoy while listening to some great music under the stars. Please join us. I want to thank all the members who supported me with the cooking demos this year. I really enjoy cooking with you all. I know many have asked if we could do hands on and it is hard with such a small kitchen as we have here at Kensington, but I promise you that we will do some kind of hands on in the dining room next season when I have more time to plan them out. This month’s cooking demo will feature conscious cuisine, teaching our members how to get great flavor with out all those calories. We will also be taking orders for some professional chef knives so please place your orders that day during the cooking demo. We offer Free the knife sharpening. Just drop your knives off and we will have them back to you in a few days…razor sharp. For those members who are heading north, please travel safely and we will be awaiting your return. For those of you who are staying in town, please keep Kensington your #1 choice for Tuesday and Friday night dining options this summer season! I want to thank all of Kensington’s members for their continued support and making my second year a blast!! I hope you enjoyed it as much as I did.

Bunkers You may have noticed that we have been maintaining the bunkers a little different than normal (at least I hope you have!). The maintenance practice and style of bunker is called the Australia Bunker because it is modeled after how courses in Australia maintain their natural sand hazards. There is logic behind the method and it also has an aesthetic value to it that sets it apart from other courses in the area and I would like to elaborate on both. From the picture you can see that the outer edges of the bunker are not being groomed or raked with grooves which has several positive benefits. The area that is smoothed is the slope of the bunker between the turf and the groomed flat portion of the bottom of the bunker. By not disturbing that area everyday it has a chance to firm up to the point that normal shots hitting in that area have a chance to “bounce” off the firm slope and end up in the flat portion of the bunker. We are hoping this practice will decrease the chances of the dreaded fried-egg lie that occurs more frequently in soft bunker faces but please know this is not a guarantee. And since a bunker is considered a HAZARD, it is supposed to be more difficult than hitting from the middle of the fairway! This has also assisted in our maintenance after storms thus far due to the firmness holding the sand in place instead of washing the faces out. We have not had one of our normal Frog-Choking rains since we started this practice in February, but it has passed the rain events thus far with little damage. We also started hand raking the bottom of the smaller bunkers because our machines did not produce the desired look we wanted. We have had some positive feedback that our plan has helped improve the bunkers so we will continue the Aussie style for the time being. From an aesthetic viewpoint all I can say is it is different than what most of us are used to. I like being different if improved playability is the true benefit to the change. And since it takes us nearly the same time and labor during setup, it is a win-win change. It is very important with this method that golfers do not enter or exit the bunker on the high faces. Once the sand is disturbed it takes several days to firm up again. Please enter and exit in the low areas to keep the course great for those behind you.

Land or water....... Which is the best workout for you?

Friday, May 20th

It’s Italian Night!

As the weather heats up... how do you cool off? Aqua fitness is a great way to cool off & there are many health benefits as well. Some of the positive effects of water can be restoring sore muscles, reducing pain caused from arthritis, cardiovascular and balance improvements.

$20++

No Bar or a la Carte Menu Reciprocals Welcome

Attending John’s Aqua Fit class on Wednesday at 2:30pm or Water Aerobics with Ali at 10:00am on Tuesday’s and Thursday’s are indeed the best choices here in Naples! If you don’t swim or it’s been a long time, NO WORRIES!! Try putting on your favorite, peppy playlist at your private pool and: Walk laps for 15-20 minutes. This will challenge your cardiovascular endurance. Waters buoyancy reduces the impact on all joints. Aqua workouts have a greater resistance than just walking on land which requires more effort and ultimately burns more calories. Heated pools smooth sore muscles and there are specific pool exercised for arthritis that can improve the quality of life. Stop by the fitness center or contact John directly 239-777-2050 for these helpful exercises. Lastly, by exercising in the pool you avoid problems that other outside workout routines and sports have, such as heat exhaustion and dehydration. Make your choices wisely in your daily workout routine. Our bodies need variety and sometimes that can be on land or in water. Health & Happiness

On behalf of our Volunteer Committee and all our SW FL Veterans and Families thank you to our Kensington membership for this our 5th year of continuing generous and genuine support for our SW FL Home Base Program. Our Saturday March 12 events of golf including over 30 Veterans, 65 Kensington members, over 35 guests, and our Family Day Event poolside where we had 20 adults and 16 children, was a huge and unprecedented success thanks to all of you and the tireless and expert work of the Kensington members our Volunteer Committee with whom I am privileged to serve this noble cause: Joe Basli, Buck Evans, Bill Lutz, Bob Marino, Bob O’Brien, and Tom O’Brien. Also our thanks to our Club leadership and staff, Dave Kryzwanos, Bret Borshell, Chef Ralph, Carol Polidora along with Dick Erick and the pro shop staff, Corey McDonough, and community volunteers on the golf course and poolside for everything. We are grateful to Club President Linda Adamany, whose note Tom O’Brien read at our Opening Ceremony, and our club Board who have been an indispensable source of support and advice during planning and execution. Fred Franks Gen, US Army (retired) Honorary Director Home Base Program

Our collective community commitment represents fulfillment of a bond of trust. Trust by those of our citizens who volunteer to serve in our Armed Forces that we will be there for them when their duty and mission are complete. And we certainly are. Your support has enabled 90 of our post 9/11 SW FL Veterans to enroll in our Warrior Health and Fitness Program in 2014 and 2015, with 60 more this year. Our latest class graduated March 15, 2016 at pre-game ceremonies at Jet Blue Park. Four SW FL Veterans have already graduated from the Home Base 2-week Intensive Clinical Program (ICP) at Mass Gen Hospital begun with a pilot in the fall of 2015. We expect more than 10 more to attend in 2016. Our Home Base SW FL Program Director is Naples native and USMC Veteran of this war, Armando Hernandez, under whose leadership our Veterans have made great and even life-saving progress as you have seen in their testimonials in this year’s event program. One example, “I love the program. I love the idea of the program, getting into the depths of the way exercise and eating right helps with coping mechanisms for PTSD, and bringing us together.” Your generous support this year along with businesses and individuals from our local SW FL Community included 59 Kensington member hole sponsors and reached total levels exceeding $110,000 (expenses totaled 13%). When combined with a golf event hosted by Pelican’s Nest on March 14 (with the Volunteer Committee chaired by Kathy Swift and assisted by Buck
