FROM THE DESK OF THE G.M. BY ALLEN SELF, GENERAL MANAGER
Greetings Carrollwood Members, It is truly amazing how fast the year is flying by. As we are entering the hottest two months of the year activity has settled into the normal pace of our Florida summer months. The positive to the slower months is that it allows us to correct issues that need to be addressed but are put on hold due to being busy. Some examples would be aerification of the golf course greens, major repairs to the wooden deck traveling to and from the clubhouse and between nines, re-grouting of the sauna inside the men’s locker room, repairs to multiple plumbing and drainage issues inside the clubhouse, and repairs to all ceiling fans located on the outside clubhouse terrace. As we all know there is good and bad to everything, and although the heat brings with it much slower activity throughout the club it does allow us to conduct preventative maintenance on and off the golf course. In recent weeks I have spoke to members that have voiced their concern about the conditions of the putting surfaces on the golf course. Their comments have been centered on their concern that a particular green appears to have a disease, or that we have an infestation of insects eating the grass. Our golf course continues to be in great shape and more importantly very healthy. The weak areas that you see on a few of our putting surfaces were created during our aggressive aerification process followed by an aggressive verticutting of the greens. When verticutting the putting surfaces the blades pulled a few areas of turf up and temporarily damaged the surface. This will all heal in fairly quickly and is sometimes part of the preventative maintenance process of aerification. The most important thing I would like you to know is that we have very healthy putting surfaces and will be in very nice condition once we heal from the preventative maintenance projects over the summer. It is a process that we must do and will result in the very nice putting surfaces you have become accustomed to over the past few years. I would like to take a moment to boast about our staff here at Carrollwood Country Club. When arriving at Carrollwood back in January of this year I quickly noticed the excitement level and the interest of the staff when meeting about the preparation of our upcoming Independence Day Celebration. At the writing of this article we had not reached the date for the event but our key department heads have spent many hours getting ready for the 4th annual Independence Day Celebration. As you probably are already aware all staff members are involved at some level with the event. With cooperation from Mother Nature it will not only match but hopefully exceed the success of our past Independence Day Celebrations. It is a great time to be a part of Carrollwood Country Club and our Independence Day Celebration is a good example of what our staff can produce as a team. It continues to be an exciting time to be a member at Carrollwood Country Club. Our membership has continued to grow at quite a brisk pace throughout the hot summer season. I will continue to pay close attention to what I hear when speaking to the membership and we will attempt to make adjustments when possible. I thank you for making this a successful year and look forward to seeing you at the club.

Golf
news
From the Golf Shop BY DAREN JOHNSON, DIRECTOR OF GOLF
Carrollwood Country Club Members, Summer is in full effect…hot humid days with a lot of rain. However, the club has still been very active which is great to see. We actually had a record month in May with over 3,600 rounds of golf; compared to May 2014 were we played 2,700 rounds of golf. As we progress through the summer, you will see several new faces within the golf operations. As many of you already know, Shawn has moved into the golf operations as an Assistant Golf Professional. Shawn will still be teaching, however, he will work his teaching availability around the needs of the golf operation. Another change we have made is Alex Barfield has been promoted to an Assistant Golf Professional. Alex has been with Carrollwood for four years and recently decided he would like to continue his growth in the golf business and has started on his PGA bookwork. I am excited to have both Shawn and Alex in these roles because they know our members and will help us continue to provide a great golf experience at Carrollwood Country Club. A few other new faces you will see on staff are: Hannah, Ryan, Blake and Mike. Hannah is coming on board as an Assistant Golf Professional. Hannah will work closely with the WGA and also help us grow our junior golf program. Ryan, Blake and Mike will all work outside operations and all have experience at other golf facilities throughout the Tampa Bay area. We lost 4 great individuals at the end of last season, Jeff, Jimmy, Josh and Scott, but I believe the following additions and promotions will be great for the golf operations as we prepare for another great season at Carrollwood Country Club. Fall will be here before you know it! Mark your calendars with the following dates as these dates have been finalized for some marquee events at CCC.

BY JIM KELLY, TAC DIRECTOR
From The Tennis & Aquatic Center Here at the TAC we are having a great summer so far and hope everyone else is as well! It’s about half way over now, and we all know how warm it gets in Tampa during July and August, so what better way to cool off than join us at the pool for a refreshing swim or frozen drink from the Oasis Bar & Grille? Smoothies, Milkshakes or an ice cold beverage are just a few of the goodies offered for a quick cool down. The best and fastest way to cool down, on weekends through August 2nd, is on our giant inflatable waterslide. It will be open Saturdays and Sundays, weather permitting, from 12:00 pm to 4:00 pm. It is also available to rent for your private pool parties and more. You can stay cool poolside in one of our Pool Cabanas. They are available for rent, but when not rented, they are available on a first come first serve basis. Swim Lessons, Tennis Lessons and Resort Sports Camp spots are still available for this summer. Just stop by the TAC front desk and register for an upcoming Class or Camp. Classes and Camps are being offered through the end of July!
Our staff is always trying to improve your experience at the TAC here at Carrollwood. If you have any comments or suggestions, please don’t hesitate to stop by the front desk and ask for one of our comment cards. I can assure you that each one is seen by management. Finally, a new offering from the TAC is our Thai Massage. It is available by appointment only on Wednesdays, from 6:00-9:00 pm. These massages are offered by Jaclyn Devine, who is also our Yoga Instructor. You can opt for 60 or 90 minute session which will be customized to you needs. Thai massage gives relief from migraines, sprains, anxiety and improves sleep & flexibility. You can give the TAC Desk a call for more information or to set up an appointment. Enjoy the rest of your summer and we hope to see you at the TAC soon! Jim Kelly Director of Recreation & Aquatics
Backyard Swimming Pool Safety A backyard pool is a great place for your family to hang out and take a break from the heat. Summer is in full swing and backyard pool season is also. Even though, backyard pools are fun, they are a safety hazard for children. Life-threatening dangers can turn deadly in an instant if the proper safety precautions are not taken ahead of time. Each year hundreds of accidents occur in backyard swimming pools, and some of them are deadly. Every pool owner is responsible for making sure that their pool is as safe as possible for everyone that enters their backyard.
to breathe. If you are using a pool cover, make sure to completely remove it from the pool when it’s time to go swimming. It is equally important to make sure everyone is out of the pool before you put the cover back on. Keep Away From Drain Filtration Pools should have an anti-vortex cover on all pool drains. However, just because these drain covers should be installed, it does not mean that all pools will have them- especially older pools.
Follow these safety tips below to help ensure your backyard pool is safe.
Since it is always better to be cautious, make sure you inform your children to keep their hands and hair away from the drains in the pool. A child’s finger or hair can get sucked into a drain without an anti-vortex cover.
Install A Fence It is essential to have a fence around your swimming pool. Having a fence around your pool will prevent anyone from swimming in it that isn’t supposed to. Make sure that the fence is at least 42 inches high and has a self-closing and latching gate. This will ensure that the gate is never left open.
Be Vigilant and Informed It is important that one adult is always in charge of watching children in the pool. If you are in charge of supervising the children, make sure that you do not get distracted. Your only focus should be on keeping the children in the pool safe.
The latch should be high enough so that it is not reachable by small children. It is also important to make sure that children cannot climb the pool fence.
If you have a pool in your backyard, you should also know how to perform CPR and First Aid in case an emergency does occur. It is important to be prepared for an emergency.
Studies have shown that a barrier separating a pool from the home reduces a child’s risk of drowning by 83%. Completely Remove The Pool Cover Pool covers can be extremely dangerous. If a pool cover is not removed from the pool all the way, a child can get stuck underneath it and will be unable
Drowning is preventable, and it is your duty to make sure that your family and loved ones stay safe around the water. Taking these necessary precautions for your backyard pool will help ensure that your loved ones are safe.

CVST Has 6 of Their Toughest Take On Hurricane-Man Six athletes from the Carrollwood Village Swim Team (CVST) set foot on the powder white sands of Pass-a-Grille beach, tattooed with sharpie numbers, and surrounded by T-shirts reading, “Anything else is just a sponge bath.” The annual Hurricane Man 2.4 mile rough water swim is always a race to be looked forward to at Carrollwood because open water race opportunities are so few. Madison Houck (10) started us off swimming the 1000m race placing first in her age group finishing in a swift time of 16:37.00, setting a high standard for her teammates swimming the 2.4 mile race. Daryl Pickerell (16) stole the show battling for the first place finish in his age group to win in a time of 45:46.00. Following him, for CVST, was teammate Abby Forman (13) swimming the race for the first time in an impressive 48:28. Shortly after, Emma Volz (20) finished in 49:42 to win her age group and Maria Zambito (20) finished in 51:29 to place second.. Allan Edwards (40), a CVST parent who swims with the CVST Senior Group represented CVST well placing second in his age group with a final time of 50:30.00. Congratulations to all of the athletes for their performances! There’s nothing like a tough open water swim to prepare a swimmer for long course season.
Hurricane-Man - Early morning prior to Race
Abby Forman, Emma Volz, and Maria Zambito
Sean Kenny (10) - In one of the tightest races in the history of the CVST swimmer of the month Sean Kenny (10) edged out Abby Forman (13) 74.71 seconds dropped verses 73.69 seconds dropped to earn April’s swimmer of the month. Tennis Tip by Tennis Director, Chris Cary
Improve Your Game by Playing More Mini-tennis Players of all ages should play more mini-tennis to accelerate their athleticism faster than regular tennis. Professional players like former number one French player Gael Monfils grew up playing hours and hours of mini-tennis and still use imini-tennis in their training programs. Perhaps the best minitennis player in the world, Monfils is incredibly creative ,amazingly fast and has a massive wing-span. The links below show Gael Monfils and Novak Djokovic playing an advance version of mini-tennis commonly used throughout Europe: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xacRZ5uhgJg, http://www.businessinsider.com/novak-djokovic-mini-tennis-2012-4.
Sign Up: Tennis and Aquatics Front Desk September 4th: First Friday Tennis Mixer: 6:30 to 8:30 P.M. October 10th: Junior Grand Prix Tennis Event for ages 4 to 16.
Most players already use mini-tennis, but only for a few minutes while warming up. The next time you are practicing with a partner, try playing a short games of mini-tennis to 7 to reap the following benefits: Hit far more balls than you would from the baseline. In most cases, players hit hundred more while playing mini-tennis. Remember it’s how many balls a player hits that makes them good -- not how many years they’ve owned a tennis racket. * “Fine tune” your ball control and use more spin and pitch control (opening and closing of the racket) for better direction. Improve footwork -- being a shorter distance to your opponent gives you less time to react to the ball making you have to move quicker with small efficient steps.
CCC tennis members and doubles partners Karen Mace and Gina Morgan also use mini-tennis to speed up their ball control skills. Anyone watching them play recently can see that they are improving daily!
Learn the importance of keeping the ball deep and punishing your opponents short ball. * Develop Topspin - to hit topspin in mini-tennis, one has to increase their upward swing enough to make the ball spin down in order to land in the shorter court.

From the Golf Course Superintendent We recently completed the first of three aerifications to the golf courses. Although we have seen many positives from the aerification I am disappointed to report that we did have some damage done to greens 5 and 6 of the pine course. The damage was caused by a process called verticutting. This procedure is something that we have done here in the past and have always had great results. Unfortunately, we did not achieve the desired results this time and it will be about two weeks(July 4th weekend) until all the areas are filled in. Overall the agronomic work that we have done to the greens has been extremely positive and beneficial both above ground and below ground. While the aerification procedure is disruptive to the playing surface, it is critical to the health of our greens. The aerification protocol that we follow is based upon recommendations from the breeder of Champion.
We are attempting to address some of the issues with the bunkers not draining and unfortunately what we are finding is that many of the pipes that lead out of the bunkers to our drainage infrastructure have collapsed under the weight of the soil above them. We also have tried blowing out the drainage lines using a high pressure hose but are having mixed results. We will continue to work on this problem throughout the summer.
As we move further into the summer months and the rainy season, I would like to thank you in advance for your understanding when we must restrict the carts to paths only due to the wet conditions. We will lift the restriction as soon as possible.
