FROM THE DESK OF THE G.M. BY ALLEN SELF, GENERAL MANAGER

HEATHROW COUNTRY CLUB 1200 Bridgewater Drive Heathrow, Florida 32746 407.333.1450

www.heathrowcc.com

Greetings Carrollwood members. We are now beyond the halfway point of the Winter Season which has proven to be a challenging season but still a successful one. During the month of January the weather controlled our activity on the golf course and resulted in a decline in rounds compared to January 2015. Once the beautiful weather returned, the golf activity also returned as did an influx of new memberships to the country club. With this increase in activity combined with the winter season dormancy of the turf, the conditions of the teeing areas on the practice range usually have little grass at this time of the season. The consistent rotation of the hitting areas on the practice facility from front to back and onto the practice mats have drastically improved the turf on the practice tee areas. Although some prefer to only practice on natural turf it is a necessity to utilize the mats to allow us the time to reseed the worn areas and for the new seed to germinate. We appreciate your cooperation with the scheduled rotation. As we move into the last quarter of the winter season I am excited about the month of March our most active month of the year. Easter falls on March 27th this year and is one of Carrollwoods most attended club events. Then comes April which includes our two largest golf events of the year. The Carrollwood Ladies Member Guest is scheduled for April 14, 2016 and the Men’s Member Guest is scheduled for April 28, 29, 30, 2016. At this time I would like to acknowledge our 2015 Employees of the Year by Department and our Overall Employee of the Year!

Food & Beverage news

Around the Clubhouse TODD BROWNE, FOOD & BEVERAGE DIRECTOR This year is already off to a quick start. The cold weather is behind us and new days are ahead, but I must reflect on the Super Bowl. On Super Bowl Sunday, we had a great turn out and I cannot thank you all enough for your support. If you missed it, we had a 12 foot by 15 foot screen showing the exciting game while sitting back and enjoying Chef Jake’s Ribs, Chicken, Burgers, Dogs and enough Draft Beer to here Peyton say “Omaha” a few times. What I do want to put behind us is the first annual Staff vs Members Flag Football Game. It was a one sided affair with the Members, led by Dave Garcia, coming out on top. It was ugly, but Alex from the Pro-Shop will use the summer to game plan for next year. So, with the off season used for conditioning, we will come back even stronger. Now that the weather is getting back to true “Florida Weather”, we will be opening The Oasis Grille starting with the first weekend in March. The operating hours during the month of March will be Saturdays & Sundays only, 11 to 7 pm. Once April is here, we will open for the season Monday through Sunday, 11 to 7 pm. We’ve lowered the Pool Side Bar & Grille menu prices and added a few more favorites to the menu. So let’s hop on to the next big event. Easter is a little earlier this year. We will continue doing the 2 different egg hunts, one at 10 am and the other at 1:30 pm. The petting zoo is always a big hit, so lots of little bunnies and baby goats for everyone to play with. Chef has added even more items to this amazing menu…so invite your family, friends and neighbors and let us showcase what a great Club we have here. We will do the staggered seating again this year so make your reservations now as the early time slots fill up quickly. Chef Jake and I have been working on a new “All Day Menu” as well as adding a new dinner menu. Using all local fresh products, look for more Hand-Cut Steaks, fresh local Seafood, Chicken and Pasta items. We will continue to offer our all day menu, but the additional items are a chance to add to the experience of the Club and providing you with more options. We have something different going on every day here at the Club. Every Tuesday we offer our 2 for Tuesday special. Buy any Sandwich (Dine in only) and get the second sandwich for free. Wednesday is Family Night when kids eat free pasta with an adult purchase. We call this our Wine Down Wednesday which includes all you can eat fresh pasta, three different kinds of sauce, meatballs, shrimp and chicken cooked to order right in front of you. Dinner includes with a complimentary glass of Stone Cellars House Wine and your choice of House or Caesar Salad for only $14.95. Every Thursday night is Unlimited Prime Rib Night. Chef will hand-cut seasoned Prime Rib for you in the dining room. Dinner includes fresh local vegetables, baked potato and a salad of your choice for only $19.95.

Friday Nights we have Live Music on the patio from 6 to 8:30 pm. We’ve added a new artist into the mix, Gene Cannon, a lifelong local artist who plays the saxophone. He will bring some Jazz and Blues to the Club for your enjoyment. Saturday Nights from 5 to 9 pm we will continue to offer Happy Hour drink pricing teamed up with 1/2 Price Appetizers all night. Sunday Funday here at the club. 50 cent wings and $8 pitchers from 11 to 7 pm For those of you who really enjoy wine, we host a monthly wine dinner on the last Wednesday of each month. We call this the “Bacchus Wine Dinner”. Our representatives from Southern Wine & Spirits will come in and discuss different varietals of wine from all over the world. The Chef will pair those wines into a fantastic 5 course gourmet dinner menu. 5 glasses of wine, great food & lots of fun. Our upcoming Bacchus Wine Dinners will be held on March 30th and April 27th. Wow, with this many things going on, it’s truly a lot to remember. But if you can remember it all, then you should join us for our Trivia Night once a month. Put your thinking caps on and come enjoy Steve Welch on March 10th and April 7th. Steve does a fantastic job and is truly known as the “Trivia Guy”. Chef Jake puts out some amazing food for everyone to enjoy, and we offer Happy Hour drink pricing during the entire event. The doors open at 6 pm, then the games begin at 7 pm. Fun for the whole family! If dinner and dancing is your thing, then our monthly Traditions Dinner Dance is the place to be. March 18th, we will be hosting our first ever Toga Party with Mediterranean cuisine, dancing and a costume contest. Relive your college days and come dance the night away. April 15th will be here sooner than you know, don’t let Tax Day get you down. You have 3 choices; file by the due date, ask for an extension or cash that refund check and head on over to the Club for our Monopoly Themed Dinner. That’s right, your favorite board game is now a themed dinner here at CCC. Each property features different cuisine. Pacific Avenue will have fresh salmon, rice and broccoli. Maybe you land on Boardwalk and want hotdogs and funnel cake. Kentucky Avenue will feature bourbon style pork chops with biscuits and gravy. Avoid JAIL unless you like fried bologna and peanut butter and jelly ice cream. Everyone starts at GO and gets $500, so come on up, throw the dice, move along the board and Dance the night away. Please don’t hesitate to contact me if you have any concerns or questions regarding anything. I’m open to any ideas and my door is always open! See you at the Club.

Women's Golf Association BY MARY ROBINSON, CORRESPONDING SECRETARY

Golf

news

This has been one of the coldest, rainiest winter golf seasons I can remember in a while! Mother Nature has let us have it this winter and forced us either off the course or to re-schedule tournaments. We do have some exciting news, Younghee Hong had a hole in one on January 23 on Pine 8. Congratulations Young! What a feeling of excitement that must of have been for you! We are all jealous and proud! Although this was not a hole in one…Marilyn Connors took a shot off the bridge on Pine 4 and bogeyed the hole! That was just amazing! Mark your calendars, save the date and don’t forget to sign up for this year’s Member-Guest Tournament on April 14, 2016. The theme for this tournament is “Looney for Golf” and is an 8:45 AM shotgun in teams of 2 Members and 2 Guests or 1 Member and 3 Guests. There will be another great raffle this year along with special “tee” gifts. Please sign up in the pro shop no later than April 7th and good luck to everyone! Thanks to Mother Nature our Pink Ball tournament was rescheduled and we are also looking forward to our “Leap Year” daily play….One free Leap over a bunker or water! Golf rules for thought… per the USGA Rules of Golf and Amateur Status; Rule 7-2: Between the play of two holes a player must not make a practice stroke, except that he/she may practice putting or chipping on or near: a. The putting green of the hole last played b. Any practice putting green, or c. The teeing ground of the next hole to be played in the round Provided a practice stroke is not made from a hazard and does not unduly delay play (Rule 6-7) Strokes made in continuing the play of the hole, result of which has been decided, are not practice strokes. Note1: A practice swing is not a practice stroke and may be taken at any place, provided the player does not breach the rules. As always any questions or concerns with game rules feel free to talk to Shawn in the Pro Shop. General information is also posted in the Ladies Locker room as well. Going forward we hope to have more fun couple’s games and help in keeping our resident coyote at bay!

From the Golf Course Superintendent The maintenance staff has been eagerly awaiting the arrival of warmer weather and longer days of March and April. The weather in January was awful with several rainy and overcast days. The good news is that the greens are in good shape and rolling quite well. Please remember to practice good golf etiquette while on the courses especially fixing ball marks on the putting surfaces your help in this matter is greatly appreciated. We finished our bunker renovation in January. All 27 holes have new sand in them with an average depth of 4 inches. We used a total 1458 yards of sand to complete the bunker renovation.

During the upcoming months we will continue with our normal agronomic programs of verticutting and topdressing the greens along with some spiking of the greens. These programs will cause minimal disruption to the putting surfaces and will improve the overall health of our greens. If you have any questions or concerns you would like to speak to me about please don’t hesitate see you on the course. Best regards,

Chuck Cakmakci Director of Agronomy

FRIDAYS: 8:30 to 10:00 A.M. Advanced Doubles Concepts with Gyorgyi Men’s Doubles Finalists

League Tennis News & Other Happenings BY NOLA SMITH, TENNIS REPRESENTATIVE March is here and along with it comes unpredictable weather, but our leagues weather anything that comes their way. Our Monday 3.0 Ladies USTA league finished their 18 + season the end of February. This is a competitive entry-level team that is fortunate to have experienced players on the team who compete against seven other clubs. The 40 +team is full and also includes some very competitive players. This team’s goal is to have a winning season and have asked Gyorgyi to coach them on strategic doubles play. Our Tuesday Suncoast League of 14 doubles teams has been up and down this season; league play ends in April so watch for information regarding challenges and information regarding round robins, etc. in the next few weeks. Carrollwood Country Club will be the host Club this next season, 2016-2017, which is an honor for this club and our tennis members. Wednesday we have 2 leagues – our Interbay team, made up of 7 doubles teams. They are off to a great start, looking strong (but hoping for warmer weather;) they finally have their entire team back from injury, but a big thank you goes to their great subs who helped them get through the Fall season. Our ALOT league also plays on Wednesdays, and they too struggled on a weekly basis having their regular teammates able to play; they are

CONDO • RESORT Did You Know??? As a member of Carrollwood Country Club, you can book a reservation using your discounted Member Rate right on our website! Simply type the following code in the Promo field to take advantage of your special rate: EGCR13941 A fun fact to note is that Emerald Greens Condo Resort is currently ranked #1 out of 160 hotels in the Tampa area for customer service on TripAdvisor.com! That is a testament to the terrific service provided by both the staff of the resort as well as the staff of the country club. It also speaks volumes about how welcome the CCC members make our guests feel while visiting our property, so thank you for that! See you around the club!

now playing their full roster on a regular basis and while off to a slow start their team is now in 3rd place (out of 8 clubs)! Our CCC team is excited to announce that Carrollwood Country Club will host ALOT’s Annual Banquet on May 11th, Our 3.5 Ladies nighttime USTA team (the C5’s) are having their best season yet, with 2 wins and 2 losses so far, so they are right in the middle of the pack (4th place) presently. They have a very large roster this season with many new ladies joining the team for evening play, sharing good tennis, match smack talk, and lots of laughter. You are invited to come and join them for their home matches in the second half of the season. The CCC 4.0 USTA 18 + men’s have had some very close matches but unfortunately have come up short.... 40+ will begin March 26th - have some great players joining our team of already very good competitive players. Welcome Vadim Heiken, Dick Woltmann, & Stuart Landis. Our annual Derby was held February 12, 13 & 14 and was a very fun event. Good turnout of players (54), lots of good tennis and beautiful weather. See our Director of Tennis, Chris Cary’s article for pictures and the winning teams! Good tennis everyone,

Nola
