FROM THE DESK OF THE G.M. BY ALLEN SELF, GENERAL MANAGER Greetings Carrollwood Members, As we fast approach our summer season and what is normally a slower time at Carrollwood Country Club I would like to take the opportunity to thank everyone for making this winter season one of our best ever. Our activity throughout the club has been fantastic! As you will see in our Director of Golf, Daren Johnsons’ article, our golf round activity has increased greatly over the same time last year. All of our Social events have continued to see large increases in attendance over past years and our Membership continues to grow at a very nice pace. Our Easter Brunch and Egg Hunt resulted in 600 members attending which was an increase of almost 100 members over last year. This activity is exciting for me as your General Manager and all of the country club staff as it lets us know that you are happy with what we are offering and how we are conducting our events at the country club. The purchase of the new mats on the practice tee has been a nice solution for the overused and grassless tee area that was created as a result of all the winter activity. The practice tee has now healed in nicely and with a periodic rotation between the grass tee and the practice mats we should be able to maintain a much nicer tee area year round. In recent weeks we have purchased a new gas grill for the Oasis Grille at the Rec Center and a new Golf Range Picker to improve our ability to clean the practice range quicker throughout the day and at the end of each day. In addition to these improvements we have been working on improving our on course restrooms with a much needed facelift. All of the air conditioners have been replaced or repaired to good working condition, the water fountains are in good working order and damaged areas on the interior walls have been repaired and repainted. I have recently received a few comments about members playing the golf course and not seeing a beverage cart for long periods of time during their round. In an attempt to improve our consistency in service to our membership the Turn Grille will open at 7:00 a.m. and will remain open until 6:00 p.m. Tuesday through Sunday to offer food and beverage during the upcoming hot summer days. We will continue to have a beverage cart during certain days of the week but during the times the beverage cart is unavailable, or in addition to the beverage cart, the Turn Grille will be there to satisfy your needs. Please make sure you visit the Turn Grille before your round, or when making the turn and stock up on whatever you need to enjoy your round during the summer heat. We have coolers available at the Turn Grill to allow you to take a larger quantity of product on the golf course if needed. We will continue to listen to your requests and work hard at maintaining Carrollwood as one of the top private country clubs in the Tampa area. Again thank you for your support and I look forward to seeing you at the country club.

Food & Beverage news
Around the Clubhouse TODD BROWNE, FOOD & BEVERAGE DIRECTOR It’s been non stop hopping around here. Easter was a great success. We had over 600 members; families and friends, this year and I cannot thank you all enough for your support. If you missed it, we had 2 egg hunts with over 6000 eggs for the little ones. A real live Easter Bunny walking around dancing and taking pictures with the kids. A bounce house, a slide, a petting zoo, face painter and so much more. Chef Jake and Chef Brian’s team did an amazing job with the food and the Clubhouse was transformed into a blooming spring feel which, as always, was done by our amazing Stephanie. We are gearing up for Men’s Member Guest the first weekend in May and then it’s all about the Moms. Mother’s Day falls on Sunday, May 10th and this is truly the place you will want to be to show your Mom just how much you love and thank her. I hope you all got a chance to visit Jail on April 15th. We did a fun Monopoly Traditions Dinner Dance. “Jail” had Fried Bologna and Peanut Butter and Jelly Ice Cream. Each property was themed with different food from Kentucky Avenue (bourbon pork chops and biscuits) to Boardwalk (Funnel Cake and Coney Island Hotdogs). We will be hosting our next Traditions Dinner Dance on May 20th, doing a 70’s Theme Party. Break out the wigs and the bell bottom pants and be ready to boogie the night away.
We have added 2 new managers to the Team in April. Peggy Staley comes to us from Sheraton Tampa Riverwalk. She will be our new Banquet Manager. Stephanie and Peggy will make all your catering dreams come true. Alexandra Levine comes to us from Island Way Grille. Her role will be the Dining Room Manager as Kelly has been promoted within our parent company and is helping at other properties. Look for our “Chefs’ Corner Specials” which comes out every Wednesday through our email blast. Each night, Chef Jake and Chef Brian will offer the all day menu plus 3 to 4 fresh, outside the box, dinner specials. There will always be a Seafood, Steak and a Chicken special every night plus Chef Brian’s delicious homemade desserts, too. The next two months we will continue to offer something for everyone each and every day. • Tuesdays we are offering our 2 for Tuesday special. Buy any Sandwich (Dine in Only) and get the second sandwich for free, including Fish Tacos and Fish N’ Chips. • Wednesdays, we will continue with our Wine Down Wednesdays which includes fresh pasta, three different kinds of sauce, meatballs, shrimp and chicken cooked right in front of you. Dinner comes with a complimentary glass of Stone Cellars House Wine and your choice of house or Caesar salad for
only $14.95 and kids gets 50% off. • Thursday Nights, we will continue our famous Prime Rib Night. The Chef will hand cut the Prime Rib for you in the dining room and it is unlimited. This will be every other Thursday from 6 to 9 pm. For the month of May it will be served on May 14th and May 28th and on June 4th and June 18th. • Friday Nights, we offer Live Music on the patio from 7 to 9 pm. • Saturday Nights from 5 to 9 pm we will offer Happy Hour pricing with ½ price Apps all night. The Fire Pit is lit so come on out and see us. • Sundays, the ½ price Burger continues (Dine in only) dress it up any way you like it for only $5.75! We’ve got a lot of great events coming up! Our next Bacchus Wine Club Dinner is on May 21st featuring wine from Republic National. The Chefs have put together a wonderful menu to be paired with some classic wines. Mothers Day is May 10th so make your reservations early. Father’s Day will be a huge cook out down at the pool on June 21st and the grand daddy of them all is our huge Independence Day Celebration Event and Fireworks show on June 27th. Your feedback is important to me. Please don’t hesitate to contact me if you have any concerns or questions regarding anything. I’m open to any ideas and my door is always open! See you all at the Club.

news
From the Golf Shop BY DAREN JOHNSON, DIRECTOR OF GOLF
Members of Carrollwood Country Club, Carrollwood was pumping this season! We had a very pleasant winter with several nice days and very little rain that impacted golf. Overall, golf is up 1900 rounds in the first quarter vs. 2014. Our largest growth of rounds came from “Member Rounds” and “Guest of Member Rounds.” This is a fantastic trend and I am very happy to see our members utilizing the club and bringing friends and family out to experience all that Carrollwood Country Club has to offer. We have recently concluded several of our “Major’s” and would like to congratulate the following Golf Members on their victories.
The WGA Member Guest winners are: Score 118: Tamara Brown / Julie Buckley / Shirley Brown / Nancy Murphy The Men’s Match Play Championship: Champion - Ken Renspie Runner up - Dale Rodekuhr Men’s Member Guest: Overall winner - Brian McNenney & Jamie Karow As we approach the summer months we will once again have a very active schedule with golf course aerification. Chuck (Director of Grounds) and myself have planned the course aerification around the 3 big summer holidays –Memorial Weekend, 4th of July and Labor Day Weekend. All three 9’s will be open over these weekends.

Carrollwood Country Club will be hosting a few events this summer that I am very excited about. Our club is a qualifying site for the US Open. We are one of sixteen clubs in the state to host local qualifying for the US Open. The qualifier is Wednesday, May 20th and the qualifiers will play Pine/Cypress. Due to this event these two nines will be closed until early afternoon. Members will have access to play Meadow this morning. Carrollwood is also hosting an Amateur Junior Match Play July 20th-July 23rd. This event will be competed on Cypress/Meadow. Members will have access to play Pine during this competition. Lastly, Carrollwood is a qualifying site for the Florida MidAmateur. This event is being played Wednesday, September 16th on Meadow/Pine. Our facility is one of seven qualifying sites in the state. Members will have access to play Cypress this morning. As mentioned, I am very excited about these events because a lot of hard work has been put in by all the team members at Carrollwood and for Carrollwood Country Club to be recognized and selected as a host site for these events is an honor. With summer upon we will have a few junior golf camps during the summer. Shawn (Director of Instruction) will have 3 golf camps for juniors that are more experienced golfers. With his camp juniors will spend more time on course playing and learning more course management. Dylan and Jeff (Assistant Golf Professionals) will also have 2 golf camps that will be for those juniors that are either beginners or have only played a few times. to change our tee times this year. Saturday play is at 10:00 A.M. and everyone starts at the same time. The new member responses on the survey included more scrambles, invite more women, send a letter to new golfers and have a golf ambassador. Pat Riggs is composing a letter for the Membership Director to give to new members to invite them to join the WGA. Cheryl Stoker suggested the club offer a free round of golf to try out the WGA.
The WGA survey for this year had only one “hot topic” which was about changing the starting time during the cold months of the year. There was a lot of discussion on this topic but it was decided to let next year’s officers handle this as it was too late for Daren

“Golf… If I hit it right, it’s a slice. If I hit it left, it’s a hook. If I hit it straight it’s a miracle.” - Author Unknown
From the Golf Course Superintendent As we quickly approach the offseason at Carrollwood Country Club I would like to address the upcoming maintenance practices that we have scheduled for the golf course. Our courses have Champion Dwarf Bermudagrass greens. This turf requires intensive cultural management to perform its best. Champion turf gives us the capability of producing excellent putting services under the right conditions. However, in order to provide you with excellent putting surfaces we must perform an array of cultural programs including verticutting, topdressing, precise nutrient management, soil chemistry management, moisture management. One of the most important practices that we perform is Aerification. Aerification of our greens provides many benefits. * Creation of voids in the turf where new plants can grow providing enhanced vigor and combating grain * Creation of sand filled channels which restore infiltration in the root zone. * Removal and dilution of thatch and organic material. * Introduction of oxygen into the root zone thus releasing CO2 from the root zone. * Alleviates soil compaction.
Our Aerification schedule is based on the recommendations for Aerification which come directly from the breeders of Champion Turf. I realize that our greens are one of the most important assets we have on the golf course. If I fail to take proper care of our greens I am allowing an important asset to lose value. If I did not perform the proper maintenance practices for this Turf we would not notice the effects immediately but long-term damage would be done. This is similar to not changing the oil in your car at the proper time; the car does not drive any differently yet the lifespan of your car would be diminished. By selecting the Champion cultivar we have selected a grass that should give us pure greens that will perform well indefinitely but only if we take care of them properly. If you would like to discuss this procedure or about any other agronomic practices that we perform my office door is always open. See you on the course.
Chuck Cakmakci Director of Agronomy

Tennis Tip by Tennis Director, Chris Cary
Two Secrets To Tennis Success When I arrived at Carrollwood Country Club in 2000, we had a court attendant/racket stringer named Gary Needleman. Gary went from being a complete beginner tennis player to a 4.5 player in two short years. He would go on to be the assistant pro and later the tennis director here at Carrollwood for many years. This kind of improvement is rarely seen and deserves a closer look.
Gary would play with the Carrollwood men’s afternoon group where the average age of player was 70! He played with women, children, men -- everyone -- no matter the age or level. Doing so allowed him many hours on the court as well as plenty of time with less skilled players which encouraged him to work on his weaknesses while competing. If he had played only players his level or higher, he might have fallen into the common trap of just playing for the moment and neglecting areas of his game that needed improvement.
When asked how he became a 4.5 player in just two years, Gary answers: “1. I played with anyone and everyone who asked me to play (regardless of their level) and 2. I did whatever my coach told me to do -- (even if I didn’t like it).” These two things are very simple, yet seldom done. In fact, most players do just the opposite: they demand to play with players at their level or better and avoid situations that make them uncomfortable.
The type of instruction he accepted was not popular with most players as it demanded slow, repetitive motions. Because Gary had played other sports at a very high level, he understood the need for this type of training and welcomed it. Find improvement in your tennis game this summer by copying Gary: play with players above and below your level while working on your weaknesses.
League Tennis News & Other Happenings BY NOLA SMITH, TENNIS REPRESENTATIVE / CAPTAIN / SUNCOAST LEAGUE “Spring has sprung, tennis is thriving, and several of our leagues have now finished. It’s now time to enjoy the summer heat and continue to keep our tennis games “hot”. Reports on our leagues: Our 3.0 USTA ladies league, played on Mondays finished their 18 & over season right in the middle of the pack. The 40 & over has really just begun but they are enjoying their first place spot the last 2 weeks....it promises to be a fun, competitive season. Welcome 3 new players to the team - Angela Bryant, Liza Garcia & Nicole Archer. Our Tuesday Suncoast team, consisting of 14 doubles teams, has now finished their season, and ended up in the lower half of the standings this season. We are looking forward to our summer round robins to improve our games, enjoy some non-competitive tennis and be ready to be “Tennis Strong” in the Fall.
WEEKLY TENNIS CLASSES
All tennis class series begin at the beginning of each month. Sign up at the Tennis and Aquatics Center front desk.
MONDAYS 9:00 to 10:30 AM: Advanced Doubles Clinic with Gyorgyi 4:00 to 4:30 P.M.: Tennis Sprouts for ages 3, 4 and 5
Wednesday, we have two leagues - our ALOT league, in our second year at Carrollwood is continuing to improve and is in the mid-level range of the standings. Our Interbay League will have completed their season by the time you read this, and most likely will finish in 4th place...very good job considering there are 15 teams that we compete against every season!
4:30 to 7:30 PM: Junior Tennis Program
Our first year 3.5 Nightime ladies league (more commonly known as the C5 - Carrollwood Country Club Crazy Chicks) are playing some good competitive tennis....against some good competitive clubs! They have 16 members who have turned Thursday nights into “Ladies Night under the Tennis Court Lights”.....Can’t wait to see how good this team will be over time!
4:00 to 4:30 P.M.: Tennis Sprouts for ages 3, 4 and 5
Our 4.0 Friday morning Ladies League 40 & over has just gotten started, but we have some veterans and “newbies” that will make this team fun and competitive. Attention CCC Men’s tennis players - the 4.0 Men’s 18 & over season finished in mid-March, and the 4.0 40 & over season started shortly after that. They have been well represented in the recent USTA Men’s League, and have a small but committed group of guys that play every Saturday morning, representing CCC. They are always looking for new 4.0 level players for the team, so if interested for next season, please contact Chris Cary, Tennis Director. Our Captains do such a tremendous job, and wanted to take this opportunity to say THANK YOU! Our 3.0 USTA captain, Sharon Saleh, our Tuesday Suncoast Captains this year Mary Klein, Beverly Glantz, Holly Charles & Nicole Callen. I also had the pleasure of captaining this wonderful league; Lorraine Strorbridge captained our ALOT league this year, Terry Rizzo is in charge of our 4.0 ladies USTA (& assisting on our Interbay team), and Carol Cotney, captain of the Interbay team who is “retiring” this year. Thanks for all your hard work these past few years Carol. I end this article with this thought .... “We are coming to understand that no organization or league will fully succeed without the active participation of each of us”. CCC is so lucky to have so many committed tennis players!
