Greetings Carrollwood Members, As we continue to move through the year and we approach the exciting times of the Holidays I would like to take the opportunity to thank everyone for what has been a fantastic 2015 year. We began the 2015 season with a bang setting records in rounds on the golf course during the months of January February March and April. In addition virtually all our member events were very successful also setting records for attendance. Our Valentines Day, Mothers Day, Men’s Member Guest golf event and Easter Brunch events each set all time high attendance records and were considered a huge success. We then entered the summer months of May through August and experienced the slow down in activity which is normal during that time. The summer brought with it the large amounts of rainfall throughout late July, all of August and the first week in September. The golf course stood strong and withstood 53 inches of rain within a 62 day period. The greens on all three nines proved to drain nicely and resulted in no disease or problems from the large amounts of rain. Areas of the golf course experienced some drainage issues but recovered nicely and also had no long term effects from the massive rainfall. During the summer months our Director of Agronomy Chuck Cakmacki and his crew worked hard aerifying the greens, fairways, and tees of all three nines multiple times. We began to see the benefits from all their hard work and preventative maintenance in October as our putting surfaces and golf course conditions became very nice. This brings us to our upcoming holiday months of November and December, my personal favorite time of the year. Please pay close attention to our newsletter articles and monthly calendars in this edition as we have many exciting events scheduled for everyone in the family. Events such as our Thanksgiving Dinner, Member Appreciation Night, Hanukkah Dinner, Santa Brunch, and New Years Eve Celebration just to name a few. In addition to our events we have some exciting things on the horizon for Carrollwood Country Club. Our new Ambassador Program that is explained in detail within our Membership Director, Renee Constantine’s article is very exciting. The winner of this program will receive two tickets to the Sunday round of the 2016 Masters Golf Tournament. (not to bad!) Thank you again for making this a terrific year and I look forward to seeing you at many of our upcoming holiday events. All the best,

Golf

news

From the Golf Shop BY DAREN JOHNSON, DIRECTOR OF GOLF

Carrollwood Country Club Members, Hard to believe that 2015 is rapidly coming to an end! Thank you to everyone for your patience as we grinded through a very wet and difficult summer. I know the aerification process is one that nobody enjoys, however I believe everyone will agree that the conditions of your course are currently amazing! Unfortunately, aerification is a necessary evil we must continue to do during the summer if we want to keep the course at its ultimate playing conditions during the cooler months when the grass does not grow and there is added stress from the increase in activity of golfers. We have a great maintenance program in place for the fall/winter which will provide you with more consistent green speeds this season versus prior seasons. We will continue to top dress the greens on Monday’s which will ensure smooth and fast putting conditions for the week and the greens will be rolled a minimum of three times per week. I’m looking forward to a great end to 2015 and a very successful 2016! The Golf Shop will have our annual Christmas Sale starting November 27thDecember 24th. As in years past golf balls will be marked with discounts ranging from 5%-25% off in a stocking hanging from the counter. The discount will apply to special orders. Thus, if you don’t see that special item in the shop let us know what you want and we will place the order. We have accounts established with all the major golf vendors, thus, we should be able to get that special item. * Sale does not apply to items already discounted.

news

The weather is finally cooling off and it’s actually enjoyable to be outdoors and play 18 holes! Unfortunately we were not the winners of this year’s Summer Nassau, but we did come in second! Congratulations to all the ladies that participated! The WGA’s “WILD ABOUT GOLF” sip and socialize was September 10th and was a total success thanks to Debbie Hayden’s talent and hard work. Everyone enjoyed themselves and it is always a great way to kick off the WGA season. Our opening day for the WGA was September 17th and this year’s theme was “Swing is Bling”. The event was well organized by Bev Boas and Karen Bentley and thanks to their strong karma we beat the rain! The winners of Opening Day were Cheryl Stoker and Pat Riggs and in second place was Ann Hart and Marilyn Connors. Susie Patteson got closest to the pin on Meadow 7 and Nancy Pulliam got closest to the pin on Pine 8. The event turned out to be our President’s (Sandie Peer) Birthday as well so we had even more to celebrate!

Opening Day

The WGA Match Play began October 8th and in my next newsletter I will have the results of this tournament. We are now looking forward to Halloween and the Orange Ball team tournament on October 29 and 31. Good luck ladies, come in costume and don’t lose that orange ball! December 10th is our annual Holiday party and will be organized by Mary Smith… any elves interested in assisting Mary please let her know! The party is followed by our Tree Tournament on December 12th. The Ringer Board officially started on Sept. 24, 2015. The Ringer score is an ideal round composed of the very best you have ever shot on each hole at Carrollwood Country Club from the same tees. The spreadsheet is in the Women’s Locker Room so please remember to post your scores each week. If you have any questions regarding the Ringer Board please contact Marilyn Connors.

“And remember… Golf is a game whose aim is to hit a very small ball into an even smaller hole, with weapons singularly ill- designed for the purpose.”

- Winston Churchill

Sip and Social

From the Golf Course Superintendent My staff and I are thankful that this past summer is finally coming to an end and the cooler temperatures of fall are on the horizon. As we prepare the golf course for the fall and winter season I thought it would be a good time to review golf etiquette on the course. Consider the following definitions of good players and good golfers. Good players have low handicaps, usually hit the ball a mile and on occasion post very low scores. Good golfers fill divots, repair ball marks and practice good etiquette every time they are on the course. This is not to say that good players are bad golfers in fact practicing good etiquette on the course seems to be slipping across the board regardless of handicap. For those of you who wish to become better golfers; here are some ways you can help. Fill your divots; the best option is to use the material that is provided to you on the golf cart. When filling in the divot add enough sand so that it is level not mounded. Few aspects of etiquette generate more discussion than fixing ball marks. If a ball mark is repaired properly it will heal up in 1 to 3 days; if left unrepaired it could take up to 14 days to heal. When repairing a ball mark you are trying to restore the putting surface to be smooth again. To restore surface smoothness you want to gently push from the sides and in some cases gently lifting the compressed area. Do not aggressively twist at the ball mark as this usually does more harm than good.

Among the first rules of etiquette taught to young players is to rake the sand bunker smooth of divots and footprints. Shoving sand around with your foot or club is no substitute for raking. Climbing in and out of the steep side of the sand bunker can cause significant damage to the turf on the bunker face. Entry and exit of a sand bunker should always be on the low sides of the bunkers. Nothing causes more damage to golf courses than the improper use of golf carts. Driving and parking to close to the greens is particularly troublesome, since the wear and tear on the turf in this area directly affects playing quality. These areas are frequently irrigated and therefore more susceptible to damage. All golf carts should remain at least ten yards away from all putting surfaces. In conclusion when using a golf cart avoid wet areas and pay attention to signage and ropes while avoiding green and tee slopes. If everyone helps out with these simple rules of etiquette we can avoid damaging the turf and in the process improve our course conditions. Hope to see you on the course soon. If you have any questions or concerns I am always available. Best regards,

Chuck Cakmakci Director of Agronomy

League Tennis News & Other Happenings

WEEKLY TENNIS CLASSES

BY NOLA SMITH, TENNIS REPRESENTATIVE It’s November, so that means that most leagues are starting their third month of match play. Our 6.5 Women’s Combo League, played on Mondays, are currently in third place; we are lucky to have some really strong dedicated players on this team. Tuesday’s Suncoast League, which features 14 doubles teams is struggling so far. Probably considered the strongest of the Bay Area Leagues, featuring teaching pros playing the #1 position, our allmember team comes up against some very tough competition. When the next article is due, I hope to report we have moved up the ladder! Wednesdays features both the ALOT league, with 5 doubles teams, and the Interbay team, consisting of 7 doubles teams. The ALOT team is doing great with 6 wins/2 losses (at the time this article was written) resulting in a 3-way tie for teams with 6 wins. Interbay started strong, had a couple of tough weeks and now the league is top heavy with a 2-way tie for 1st, and a 4-way tie for 4th, which is where CCC currently is. Strong, competitive tennis will have us “moving on up”!

All tennis class series begin at the beginning of each month. Sign up at the Tennis and Aquatics Center front desk.

Lots of Men’s Tennis activity at CCC these days. Whether it be the Wednesday Men’s Doubles night, USTA 7.5 & 8.5 Combo teams that practice during the week & face off against other clubs on Saturdays, the courts are always busy & the competition is excellent. The USTA teams are doing well, halfway thru the “Combo” seasons. After the first of the year, the leagues switch back to regular play, which will also include a 3.0 Women’s team, 3.5 Women’s team, 4.0 Women’s team as well as the Men’s USTA teams. Teams are always on the lookout for new players, so please contact Chris Cary for any additional information. We also offer fun, non-league play during the day, in the evenings, and on the weekends. Don’t forget our First Friday Tennis Socials as well, with food, drink, music and fun tennis. Enjoy the Holidays and good tennis everyone.
