Greetings Carrollwood Members, As we move through what has seemed to be a short Fall Season, excitement is building around the country club for the upcoming Holiday season and Winter months. Please pay close attention to our upcoming schedule of events and join us for our many Holiday celebrations. Our Holiday Shopping Night, Thanksgiving Buffet, and our Brunch with Santa are a few events that have proven to be hugely successful setting new attendance records the past two years. I continue to receive very positive comments about the playing conditions of the golf course. Chuck Cakmacki and his crew have done an impressive job at maintaining our golf course conditions. The golf shop’s new Stemp Meter program has also proven to be very successful at informing the membership about the green speeds on a weekly basis. Recently we showcased our facility to all 13 country clubs that are a part of our Concert Golf Properties family around the country. Each of our Concert owned clubs sent 4 of their members to compete in our 2nd annual Concert Cup golf tournament. Carrollwood Country Club was chosen to host the event and to entertain 52 Concert Cup contestants plus an additional 14 General Managers or Directors of Golf. The event was a big success and we were very proud to show off Carrollwood Country Club to our other Concert owned clubs. And by the way, congratulations to our Carrollwood C.C. team of Kreg Melton, Phil Findley, Dan Strobridge, and Steve Graf on winning the event and retaining the Concert Cup Trophy! As many of you are aware, we have had multiple construction projects going on around the club over the past few months. I would like to thank everyone for being patient with us and the construction crews during the renovation projects. We accomplished having the Turn Grille, Main Clubhouse, and TAC Center painted without getting to much paint on anyone or anything that was not supposed to be painted. It was much needed and I hope you agree that it looks great. There were wall repairs completed on the upper level of the TAC Center causing our Tennis and Swim members to have to move around scaffolding and additional workers throughout the month of October. We renovated the men’s Sauna located within the men’s locker room which created quite an inconvenience to our membership moving in and around the renovation area. And something you may not have noticed, we planted new plants in the front entrance of the country club, and in many of the islands located within both the TAC and main Clubhouse parking lots. Again thank you for being patient with us while we continue to work at improving Carrollwood Country Club for our membership. As always please let me know if I can assist you in any way. I look forward to seeing you at the country club.

A wonderful Hello to to all of our CCC Members. I think it’s safe to say, we are finally enjoying some Florida Fall weather. Chuck Cakmakci, while under extreme pressure to keep CCC and its club in the lead, never seems to let us down. He and crew have worked tirelessly to keep our greens and our golf course at the top of the list. I would like to take a small re-cap over the last couple of months and mention that our Open House/Membership Drive down at the TAC on 09/10/2016 was a huge success. We welcomed 1 new Tennis Member, 6 new Golf Members, and 2 new Social Members on the day of our membership drive. Combined with the remaining new memberships of September, we totaled 18 new memberships for the month. Many thanks to all who participated and referred new members. I hope you are enjoying your lowered monthly dues.

Keep in mind, the wonderful MSM Program is still in place. Give yourself a gift by referring a new member under this MSM Program and lowering your dues for the next 2 years. Please see me for the details of the program. The holidays are coming up so gift yourself, a friend, family member or even a co-worker and make the upcoming holidays lighter on everyone’s pocket. I would also like to mention how Fantastic our Member/Member 2016 was and send some special Thank- Yue’s out. First a Special Thank you to “Norman Clement”, who has for the last 2 years come out and taken such beautiful pictures and captured the essence of CCC and our members during this time. Shawn Gordon and his entire Golf Staff worked non-stop to ensure a great event. Todd Brown, his F&B staff, from servers and beverage cart staff. Chef Jake and all of his kitchen staff, House Keepers who worked non-stop as well and all those behind the scene. It’s a total group effort and I’m proud to be a part of such a great team led by Allen Self. We are heading into the last 2 months of the year with plenty of events on the calendar. I’m definitely looking forward to our Holidays together, here at CCC. Best Regards, Renee’ Constantine

55 days and counting until Christmas is here. I have been very good this year so I am hoping for lots of presents. If you would like to do some early shopping, we will be hosting our annual Holiday Shopping Night on November 15th from 6 to 9 pm. There will be over 30 vendors to choose from and the Chef will have some great dinner specials for you to choose from. But before I can talk about Christmas, Boo Buffet Halloween 2016 was the best ever. Chuck and his crew did an amazing job on the maze which provided hours of fun for the trick or treaters. Thank you Chuck. Speaking of giving thanks, nobody wants to have to cook for everyone so we have you covered. We put together an amazing spread of food and can take away all your stress of having to cook. Thanksgiving Dinner is served from 2 to 4 pm on the 24th. If you can’t join us this year, we also do a great to-go menu that can serve up to 8 people. Something else I am very thankful for is our Men and Women who served in the military and gave the greatest sacrifice ever. I myself am former Navy, doing 2 tours in desert storm. To show our appreciation for those who have served, we will be offering free meals for our veterans ($15 dollar value) Friday, November 11th. If this has you all primed and proud, you should join us for Prime Rib on Thursdays. All you can eat for only $19.95, this comes with a side salad, baked potato, mixed vegetables and fresh roasted prime rib carved right in front of you. Chef Jake is also featuring daily dinner specials plus our all day menu Wednesday thru Sunday. One of my favorite events of the entire year is Brunch with Santa. Truly an amazing event and you will need to make reservations early as last

year we hosted over 700 members. Santa and Mrs. Claus will be back this year as well as the train that rides around the golf course. Combine that with 12 different trees and an amazing spread of food, truly the one event of the year that you don’t want to miss. All year the members have supported the club and January 3rd is our chance to show you our appreciation for your 2016 support. In 2014 we presented the boat, in 2015 we presented the golf carts, 2016…… well, I can’t tell you just yet but I promise you will feel like “Royalty” at one of the last events of the year. Oh my gosh, that’s right, where did 2016 go? Well if you want to bring in 2017 with us, we will be hosting our New Year’s Eve Dinner Party on December 31st from 6 to 9 pm. A 4 course plated dinner that comes with a bottle of champagne to take home with you. Live music and great fun for all. The last Wednesday of every month we do our monthly Bacchus Wine Dinner. Chef and I put together a fantastic pairing of fresh ingredients, unique wines, and hours of fun. These monthly dinners continue to grow and we thank you for your support. If you love wine, great food, and meeting new people, this is the event for you. It’s a 5 course plated dinner with 5 different varietal of wines. We bring in a wine Sommelier to educate us on the background of the wine and offer the wine to be purchased at cost after the event. The next 2 events will be On November 30th and December 28th from 7 to 9 pm. We are already working on all new fun member events for 2017 so stay tuned for that. As always, I look forward to seeing you at the club and I am available anytime. Just come by the bar and say “Hello”. Todd Browne

Carrollwood Country Club Members, Happy Holidays! It’s hard to believe the year is almost over. I would like to thank you all for your continued support of the club. This summer was brutally hot but the course really held up. With having such good grass over the summer it will allow for the golf course to be spectacular through the fall and winter. Also this summer we received a brand new fleet of carts which has allowed us to continue to create a great golf experience for you and your guest. As we move into the winter season remember to make your tee times, as the cool weather brings out more golfers.

news

Fall weather is getting closer day by day and all of the WGA golfers are looking forward to the dryer and cooler weather! Our Match Play tournament, chaired by Karen Marotta, began on October 13th and 15th, with the Halloween Orange Ball Team Tournament October 27th and 29th. Scary or “not so scary” costumes are welcome on the course! Additional NEW WGA golfers this Fall are Jackie Nelsen, Kelly Hossler and Suana Stewart. Welcome ladies, we all look forward to getting to know you and having fun together on Thursdays and/or Saturdays! Our Opening Day for the WGA league was September 15th & 17th. We had 28 golfers participate on Thursday at our RHINESTONE COWGIRL event. Kathleen Rodekuhr and Bev Boas did an outstanding job creating a great tournament, prizes galore, and a real CHUCK WAGON style lunch…DELICIOUS!! It was a great way to get the season started!

First Place winners were Irene Lukasik, Kelly Hossler, Karen Bentley, and Marilyn Connors. Second Place were Sandie Peer, Mary Smith, Julie Renspie and Marita Lauer. Third place went to Dawn Kelly, Ann Hart, Kathy McGlone and Pat Riggs. Marita Lauer had a chip in and closest to pin winner was Kelly Hossler. Our Ringer Board, chaired by Marilyn Connors, began on September 22nd and 24th. The “ringer” score is an ideal round composed of the very best you have ever shot on each hole at Carrollwood Country Club from the same tees. The spreadsheet is located in the Women’s Locker Room, so please remember to post your scores each week. If you have any questions regarding the Ringer Board please contact Marilyn Connors. Our TREE TOURNAMENT event is December 8th, followed by our annual Holiday Party on Thursday, December 15th in the Emerald Room. Mary Smith is chairing this event and Nancy Pulliam will be working to create a festive atmosphere with decorations. Our charity this year is MEALS ON WHEELS. Once again (since this was a huge success last year) there is an option of bringing something to assist our local female homeless veterans. Our WGA ladies know the good feelings that are created when you can help another woman through difficult times. Look for the the flyer about the Holiday Party in the clubhouse.

A huge thanks to Kathy McGlone for putting together our WGA Golf Association Book for 2016-17. It has all of our events, contact information, and daily play rules. What would we do without her talents and attention to detail? Thanks, Kathy!

From the Golf Course Superintendent Fall is my favorite time on the golf course. Temperatures have dropped along with the humidity, and the chance of afternoon thunderstorms is nearly zero. The golf courses are in the best shape of the year. If you play golf you really should come out and enjoy our beautiful courses. We have wrapped up our summer maintenance practices and the courses have responded very well, in some cases too well as the rough on the Meadow Course seemed to have a mind of its own this fall. I can remember four years ago not being able to grow rough so I am very happy to see how far we have progressed over the last four years. Over the last several months I have heard numerous comments about the rough and how deep it is. I would like to explain why we raise heights in the fall; first thing is that this practice is something that my staff and I have been doing over the last four years always at the same height, 1 3/4 inches, and usually at the same time; the week after Labor Day. This year however, we were forced to do this procedure about three weeks early thanks to Hurricane Hermaine when he dumped ten inches of rain on us. We were unable to mow rough for nine days without causing serious damage to the course. When we were able to mow rough, there was so much growth that our Rough Units could not cut through the turf so the decision was made to raise the height a half an inch to an inch and three quarters. The main objective in raising the heights is to ensure that we have a relatively thick rough in the winter months when there is little growth due to cooler temperatures and length of day. My staff and I pride

ourselves to be out in front of possible problems and complete all the mandatory preventative maintenance that keeps our golf course in the best shape possible. Many of you may remember we do not overseed our golf course, rather we use a green pigment on the turf to provide color to our Fairways and Tees in the winter months. This procedure will start usually two weeks before our first real cold front. By using a pigment rather than overseeding, we are allowing our Bermuda to thrive rather than compete with the overseed for nutrients. We also avoid the headaches of transitioning from cool season turf to our base Bermuda in the Spring, a process that sometimes can take months to achieve. We will usually spray this pigment every three weeks during the winter months depending on temperatures and how the turf is performing. If you should have any questions regarding the golf courses or the procedures that we do on the golf courses, my office door is always open and I would be more than happy to explain any situation to you. As always, the staff and I appreciate your efforts in helping to provide the best possible conditions by filling your divots and repairing your ballmarks. Best Regards,

Each year the recipient is chosen by the USA Swimming National Officials’ Committee and the award is presented at the annual Untied States Aquatic Sports Convention. Last month Bob was so honored in Atlanta, at the Annual USA Swimming House of Delegates Meeting. It was a surprise for Bob and his family even traveled up to Atlanta to help with the surprise. Avoid ‘HARDCOURTITIS’ to become a Better Tennis Player on Clay by Gyorgyi Zsiros, CCC Tennis Professional and Former Touring Professional Hardcourtitis (Hard-Court-It is). Have you heard of this? Perhaps not. It is a word I came up with to explain the common misperception that dynamic surfaces like clay and grass should play like hard court. Many players are suffering from this tennis disease, preventing them from enjoying tennis to the fullest and being the best tennis player they can be.

Dave Doering (left) and Mike Spall (right) Presented by Tennis Director: Chris Cary

Dave and Mike organize Carrollwood Country Club’s 7:00 PM Wednesday Doubles Night for men, a fun doubles round robin open to all CCC men at all levels . Now up to five courts of play each week, Dave and Mike have helped the club achieve one its programing goals of providing regular play for men. Thank you David and Mike for all you do to support the club and make it grow! For information on how you can take part in our Wednesday Doubles Night for men, contact Chris Cary at 813-317-7778.

Save The Date! Please save the date for The Derby, our biggest tennis event of the year, held on February 24th, 25th and 26th. This annual event is a fantastically fun Men’s, Women’s and Mixed Doubles Event with organized pairings.

It is pretty easy for me to see and identify as I grew up playing tennis in Europe where clay courts are abundant and hard courts are few. Do they have “bad” bounces and slickness on clay courts in Europe? Of course! The difference, however, is you don’t hear near as many players complaining about it or letting it effect them in a negative way. When clay courts are all you have, you get use to their imperfections and learn to use them to your advantage. I love clay for this reason. While complaining about a high line or a bad bounce can be seen as the consumer’s right, it is awful for the tennis player – a gross weakness that allows their opponent to have an unnecessary advantage. Here are three points every tennis player playing on clay should be reminded of in order to avoid “hardcourtitis:” 1. Know and expect that clay courts will offer irregular bounces and occasional high lines, 2. Enjoy the challenge clay courts offer, 3. Use the realities of clay to your advantage to beat your opponents. The best clay courters I’ve ever seen would NEVER complain about an irregular bounce or a high line. Never. Avoid ‘Hardcourtitis’ and increase your winning percentage as well your enjoyment of playing on clay.
