FROM THE DESK OF THE G.M. BY ALLEN SELF, GENERAL MANAGER

HEATHROW COUNTRY CLUB 1200 Bridgewater Drive Heathrow, Florida 32746 407.333.1450

www.heathrowcc.com

Greetings Carrollwood Members, As we wave goodbye to the hot summer months, we have had our share of rainfall this year, but nothing like our previous summer of 2015. Our Independence Day Celebration in early July was a huge success with over 4,200 attendees enjoying a day at Carrollwood Country Club, and ending with an impressive fireworks display. Although summer is a time that we experience much slower activity, we are able to accomplish quite a few much needed repairs or improvements to Carrollwood Country Club. Off the golf course we were able to replace a 10 ton air conditioner unit located inside the clubhouse kitchen, and complete major stucco repairs to an upper exterior wall of the Tennis and Aquatic center. We are currently repainting the exterior main Clubhouse, the Tennis and Aquatics Center buildings, and our Turn Grille. On the golf course, our summer preventative maintenance projects have gone well and we are now prepared for another great Fall and Winter season. We are currently making repairs to the asphalt cart paths around the Meadow and Cypress nines, removing the large, unwanted speed bumps that have been created by large tree roots raising the asphalt over the years. And last but not least, we received our new fleet of 90 electric EZGO golf carts during the month of June. I would also like to remind you as members of Carrollwood Country Club that there are two new programs now available to you: the Pacific Links reciprocal golf program and the Concert Golf Properties Concierge service. If you need tickets to an upcoming sporting event, or you might be looking for a place to play outside of the Tampa area, please contact Renee Constantine, our Membership Director, for assistance. Renee can explain the programs and direct you to the proper people to have all of your questions answered.

If you know of someone that might be interested in Membership, please consider bringing them to this event. We will have a day of fun planned at our TAC Center and our current Member Sponsor Member program will be in effect for that day. This will be a great opportunity to sponsor someone and lower your monthly dues for the next two years.

For our members that have remained active throughout the summer months, we appreciate your dedication and support. To our members that leave the Tampa area for the summer, we have missed you and welcome back. Carrollwood Country Club continues to be a great place to be a part of. Around the Clubhouse TODD BROWNE, FOOD & BEVERAGE DIRECTOR

Summer is done and the kids are going back to school. With all the rushing around and homework, you should join us at the club for our Family Night. Wine Down Wednesday is the perfect mid-week escape from having to cook. Kids eat free pasta with the purchase of an adult pasta dish. This includes all-you-can-eat fresh pasta, three different types of sauce, meatballs, shrimp, and chicken cooked to order right in front of you. Dinner includes a complimentary glass of Stone Cellars House Wine, as well as your choice of House or Caesar Salad, and garlic bread for only $14.95. If the kids are back in school, that means Football Season is upon us too. We feature 15 screens in the bar and patio area, all with the NFL package, so we will be showing all of your favorite games! In addition, what could be better than watching your favorite team on the big screen? How about 50 cent wings and $8 pitchers of any draft beer of your choice? Yes, Guinness too. We will have sound on for all your home team Bucs’ games, and if you happen to be a fan of another team, we will have that game on too. Speaking of tradition, our monthly Dinner Dance for September is a Night in Havana Traditions Dinner Dance from 7 to 10 PM in the ballroom. For only $25.00, you won’t want to miss out on a great lineup that includes a glass of sangria for each person, 4 course plated dinner, and lots of dancing. Come Salsa the night away! Make your reservations early with Janice. For those of you who attended our event in August, we thank you for your support. We had an amazing turn out for our Murder Mystery Dinner. Who did kill Colonel Mustard with the candlestick in the ballroom? Too scary for you? Our Boo Buffet is October 28th. We will offer a haunted maze on the lawn, a spooky bounce house, flying witch races, monstrous dinner buffet, and lots of dancing. No tricks, but lots of treats for young and old. Best costume wins a $50 gift card.

Below is just a reminder of the other great specials we offer. Every Tuesday we offer our 2 for Tuesday special from 11am to 3pm. Buy any Sandwich (Dine-In Only) and get the second sandwich for free, including Fish ‘n’ Chips & Fish Tacos. Friday Nights we feature Live Music on the Patio from 6 to 8:30 pm. Gene and Frank will take your requests and sing some of your favorite tunes that you and your whole family can enjoy on the patio. Join us early, or make a reservation, as the patio fills up quickly on Friday evenings. Saturday Nights from 5 to 9pm we continue to offer Happy Hour drink pricing teamed up with 1/2 Priced Appetizers all night (DineIn Only). The last Wednesday of every month we do our monthly Bacchus Wine Dinner. Chef and I put together a fantastic pairing of fresh ingredients, unique wines, and hours of fun. These monthly dinners continue to grow and we thank you for your support. If you love wine, great food, and meeting new people, this is the event for you. It’s a 5 course plated dinner with 5 different varietal wines. We bring in a wine Sommelier to educate us on the background of the wine and offer the wine to be purchased at cost after the event. The next 2 events will be on September 28th and October 26th. As always, I value your opinion. If you have any ideas, or things you would like to see, please email me or stop by the bar and say “Hi”! From the Golf Shop BY SHAWN GORDON, DIRECTOR OF GOLF

Carrollwood Members, Hard to believe summer is almost over. Moving into fall, the golf course is in great shape and should lead to a great winter golf season. Chuck and his staff have done a great job with the aerification, providing an outstanding 18 holes at all times. I would like to thank all of you for your patience and understanding throughout the process. I hope that you are enjoying the new fleet of carts as much as we are. It was certainly time, and it is nice to have them. As most of you know, we have started a green stimping program and have had an amazing result. To find out what the weekly green speeds are, check the Tuesday Golf Email sent at 10 am. School is back in session! Women's Golf Association BY KAREN BENTLEY, CORRESPONDING SECRETARY

Hot, Hot, Hot, is what our golf days have been like this summer! Speaking of “HOT”…that is exactly what Mary Smith was on Tuesday, June 21st, when she got an amazing EAGLE on PINE #1! She was really SIZZLING!!

news

UPCOMING EVENTS Match Play begins on October 13th. Orange Ball Team Tournament will be held on 10/27 & 10/29.

“You swing your best when you have the fewest things to think about” - Bobby Jones

Congrats to Mary, what a super day and accomplishment! Our SUMMER NASSAU competition this summer was organized by Suzie Patteson and Marilyn Connors. There were some outstanding matches and great playing by our ladies. This summer Nassau results are: CHEVAL placed 1st, Hunter’s Green came in 2nd, and CCC came in 3rd. There was only a 3 1/2 point spread between 1st and 3rd. CCC had 8 players playing in each match, which equaled 4 teams in each event. Golf balls were awarded to the top 3 teams. We are proud of our ladies and the effort they put forth each and every match. Our players this summer were: Beverly Boas, Marilyn Connors, Diane Ferris, Ann Hart, Mary Henneberry, Young Hong, Anita Humphrey, Karen Marotta, Kathy McGlone, Suzie Patteson, Sandie Peer, Nancy Pulliam, Julie Renspie, Kathleen Rodekuhr, Mary Smith, and Cheryl Stoker. Summer Nassau ends on Thursday, August 11th, at Temple Terrace with a “FUN DAY” where all the A, B, C and D players will mix together to form teams. Opening Day for our WGA is Thursday, September 15th, and Saturday, September 17th. This year’s theme is “RHINESTONE COWGIRL” with a 4 person scramble. Dress in your best cowgirl gear and get ready to stomp your “golf shoes” and “hit em’ straight & long”! We are looking forward to a really fun day and a strong turn out by our WGA members. Please sign up in the pro shop by 9/9. Play begins at 8:30am. At the time of this article, the cost will be $39.00*. (* Possible minimal change could occur). All teams will be determined by the pro shop. The cost will include cart fees, cart snacks, lunch and prizes. Thanks Beverly Boas and Kathleen Rodekuhr for planning such a great opening day. The 9 hole group will also have their opening day on September 15th. Attention ALL of our 9 and 18 hole golfers…Please join us at our annual Sip N’ Social on Thursday, September 8th, from 5 - 7 PM in the Emerald Room at CCC. This event is being planned by Ann Barclay and Joann Henry. They wanted me to remind you that we are a very welcoming group and encourage any women golfers who have an established handicap of 40 or less to consider joining. It is still $55.00 for the year. What great value too; we have so much fun and make new friends who also love to golf. We play 18 holes every Thursday and Saturday from September 15 through late May. If you haven’t paid your dues yet to our treasurer Kathy McGlone, you can bring it that evening. Contact Kathythegolfer@aol.com. She can answer your questions about membership. 9 hole ladies direct your questions to Gloria Hasara, gjhas2000@yahoo.com. Welcome Back to Suana Stewart & Estrella Woechner, and a new member Dawn Kelly to the WGA Women Golfers! We all look forward to meeting you soon.

From the Golf Course Superintendent My staff and I are glad to see summer coming to an end, and we are looking forward to the cooler months ahead. We will finish our last aerification to the greens, tees, fairways, and rough on the Meadow course on September 12. Thank you for your patience and understanding as we went through this necessary practice. As we finish our aerifying program, we will resume our normal practice of light top dressings to the greens surfaces one week, followed with a light verticutting to the greens surface the following week. This practice will not disturb the putting surface, but will make the putting surfaces smoother, truer, and faster. Please remember to practice good golf etiquette on the courses. Please fill your divots; the best option is to use the material that is provided to you on the golf cart. When filling in the divot, add enough sand so that it is level, not mounded. Few aspects of etiquette generate more discussion than fixing ball marks. If a ball mark is repaired properly, it will heal up in 1 to 3 days; if left unrepaired, it could take up to 14 days to heal. When repairing a ball mark, you are trying to restore the putting surface to

From the Catering Desk Hope this finds you all enjoying your summer. It’s the perfect time to have a little R &R down at our poolside Oasis. This space is available for you to have a pool party, and your Catering and Events team is offering a $75.00 complimentary bar tab when you book your pool party for September! Special thanks to those who have already taken advantage of this offer, and we hope to see you again. It’s also time to start thinking about the holidays. We’d be happy to accommodate your family or corporate holiday party, large or small, but please know that our spaces are filling up quickly, especially in December, so don’t put it off too long! Are you a member of a Krewe? We are here to accommodate all of your fundraisers and would be happy to help in any way. Because I still receive calls about this, I will kindly remind all of our members that you do receive a discount on the room rental when you book a private event here with us. The discount is 50% and you can also sponsor an event, in which case, that person you sponsor will receive that same discount.

be smooth again. To restore surface smoothness, you want to gently push from the sides, and in some cases, gently lifting the compressed area. Do not aggressively twist at the ball mark, as this usually does more harm than good. Nothing causes more damage to golf courses than the improper use of golf carts. Driving and parking too close to the greens is particularly troublesome, since the wear and tear on the turf in this area directly affects playing quality. These areas are frequently irrigated, and therefore more susceptible to damage. All golf carts should remain at least ten yards away from all putting surfaces. In conclusion, when using a golf cart, avoid wet areas and pay attention to signage and ropes while avoiding green and tee slopes. If everyone helps out with these simple rules of etiquette, we can avoid damaging the turf, and in the process, improve our course conditions. If you should have any questions regarding course conditions, my office door is always open. Best Regards,

Chuck Cakmakci Director of Agronomy

New Court Reservation System This new system allows members to reserve courts online, and will be available for use on Monday, September 5th. Explanation on how to use the new system will be provided on our CCC website.

Like many of our tennis members here at Carrollwood Country Club, Bill Archer is proof that tennis is a sport of a life time. An avid soccer player as a child, Bill started playing tennis at 27. Since then, he has maintained a high level of play, allowing him to routinely defeat players half his age. At the age of 69, Bill is one of the club’s best tennis players. What’s his secret? Here are three: 1. You Are Never Too Old to Improve: Bill practices daily and often by himself with a bucket of balls or his own portable ball machine. Unexciting for most, this “old school” slow and repetitive styled practice is highly effective and honors the human brain’s demand for growing skill and talent. Many players his age have given up on improving their tennis. Not Bill. Suggested reading for the benefits of slow, high repetitive practice – ‘The Talent Code’ by Daniel Coyle.

2. Play to Your Opponents’ Weaknesses and Don’t Apologize for it: It’s called opponent awareness and Bill has it. Ask Bill the strengths and weakness of every Carrollwood Tennis Member, and he can answer. Bill finds what his opponent dislikes and does it – a lot! If you prefer fast balls, Bill will see it and make sure he hits especially slow. If you can’t stand high balls, that’s what you will get. In short, he purposely, effectively, and beautifully annoys his opponents. Suggested reading on playing to the opponents’ weakness – ‘Winning Ugly’ by Brad Gilbert. 3. Fall in Love with Competition: Bill likes rallying, but he is no “rally king.” He loves to compete! Thrives on it! The “counter stress” provided by competition, I believe, is what keeps tennis players like Bill so young. Right after a loss, you can bet that he is already planning on what to work on during his next practice – a plan that will help him defeat the same opponent the next time they meet. Suggested reading on Health benefits competing – ‘The Joy of Stress’ by Peter Jennings. If you ever get a chance to watch Bill practice or compete, I highly recommend it. Congratulations Bill on being our tennis player of the month.

League Tennis News & Other Happenings BY NOLA SMITH, TENNIS REPRESENTATIVE Officially, Summer is about to come to an end...and all of our leagues have done what they usually do during the break… PRACTICED, PRACTICED, PRACTICED! We have had weekly round robins, clinics, lessons, and fun, non-competitive tennis – but we are dedicated…doing all of this in 90 – 95 + temperatures! Two of our Leagues – the Monday Women’s 6.5 Combo league and our Men’s 8.5 Combo league, did play scheduled matches on Saturdays. Now, as you read this article (in September), all leagues will be starting their seasons this month. Our Monday 3.0 USTA Women’s League will begin in September and we are looking for players. Also, we are hoping to begin a Daytime 3.5 and 4.0 USTA women’s league, so players are needed for that as well. Our TTT (Terrific Tuesday Tennis) Suncoast Ladies League (beginning on August 30th), our WOW (Women of Wednesday), Interbay League (beginning August 24th), and our other Wednesday league, ALOT, beginning on August 24th as well, all have some new players, making all of these leagues even stronger when adding the new players with

the existing members. Thursday night’s league (the C5’s), is our night time 3.5 Women’s USTA league and they will begin play sometime in September. They are looking for more players to join them for tennis, apres chat, and adult beverages on Thursday evenings. As mentioned above, our Men’s Combo League is finishing up their season, and will begin their regular USTA league this fall. Players are needed; please contact Chris Cary, our Director of Tennis, for more information on this league; also for our Women’s Leagues, he can put you in touch with the appropriate Captains. A lot of great tennis going on at CCC! We welcome several new members to our Club and to our tennis leagues. Our first (Free Friday) tennis mixer will be September 9th; with more events to be scheduled for 2016. We have already established our Tennis Derby date for 2017 – which will be the weekend of February 24th, 25th, and 26th. Good tennis everyone,
