SAILING CAPITAL OF THE SOUTH

COMMODORE’S LOG Chapter 6 – Commodore’s Log…star date February 5, 2015, the boating world lost an intergalactic personality, friend, sailor, designer, father, grandfather and husband…Ted Irwin…we will miss him greatly but his presence will be felt at our Club for many generations to come. Consistent with Ted’s inspiration, the month of March once again rolled out some great sailing events. Forty-four Thistles arrived mostly from north of the frozen wall and experienced a well-run regatta by Susan Wallace and Karen Park. The Thistle organization has its collective head on very straight… as a group, they funded the entry fees for 4 young crews from up north who otherwise would not have attended. This type of paying forward is what keeps this great class alive and growing after 60 years of racing at our Club. And the Lightning Class held its 68th Winter Championship a few weeks ago attended by approximately 55 loyal boats and over 165 sailors. Thank you to Kathy Ahern for chairing that event with Tom Farquhar as the principal race officer and thanks to the many other volunteers, too numerous to list. The incoming tide of SPYC laurels was recently marked by our own Todd Fedyszyn who was named US Sailing Development Coach of the Year. This award is coveted by hundreds of junior sailing coaches in the US and recognizes what we and our junior sailors and parents have known for many years. Of course, his wife, Genoa, must be mentioned in the same breath. Thank you and congratulations to the entire family. Please mark your calendars for our annual Yachting Recognition award program (organized by Karen Park) on May 19 in the evening. This will be a perfect opportunity to honor Todd and many others. Yes, as you receive this edition of the Smooth Sailing, the Grand Prix is over. Say good bye to the barricades and barbed wire for another 11 months. I hope all race lovers got to watch from our festooned Club, both inside and out. No doubt the international TV community got some gorgeous views of St. Pete and hopefully it will bring more happy visitors to the area. The real economic impact of the race is a tricky

calculation, but we are confident that the collective impact of over 800 sailing races and the plethora of social events at our Club throughout the year easily rivals those numbers. All communities require a variety of economic engines and I am pleased that St Pete can host such a spectacular racing event (for 11 years) and I am equally pleased that our Club and the other boating organizations in St. Pete can annually continue to draw tens of thousands of people to this area (for 105 years). Upcoming April events include Suncoast Raceweek and the Regata del Sol al Sol race to Mexico. Some of our newly schooled race managers continue to receive great mentoring by the veterans and I thank all of you for your passion. Not sure what came first…the race or the race committee…but what I do know is that we need both. This is a reminder to check out the race management classes being offered at the Club. Along the same lines, you should consider the upcoming 2-day Safety at Sea seminar. Your Strategic Planning group is continuing its quest and is planning to complete the task by early summer. This is also a reminder to review the Executive Summary of our Club Survey (on the website or from the business office). Your record-breaking response merits repeating. Meanwhile, many of us Golfed, Reached, Shot, Ate, Wined, Cruised, Flew, Radioed, Saltied, Womaned, Ladied, Sailed, Fished, Biked, Triviad and Singled. What an interesting bunch of people….we should create our own country. Who’s with me? …and we could have our own congress. Never mind. I am totally fine just being the Sailing Capital of the South. See you at the next mark.

The Mission of St. Petersburg Yacht Club is to encourage and support yachting, and provide a comfortable social environment for our members and guests, while preserving and enhancing the Club’s traditions and prestige. 2

Power Boat Competition The weather couldn’t have been more perfect for our visitors from the Virginia Cocktail Class Wooden boating group and their small boats on Sunday, March 1st. The group had been at the Smyrna Yacht Club in New Smyrna Beach the day before racing in the Governor’s Cup and was headed down to Little Gasparilla and Lake Placid for racing on March 3rd. Between races in New Smyrna and in Lake Placid, they graciously volunteered to bring some of their Cocktail Class Wooden Boats to our club for members to demonstrate! A big “thank you” to Curt Bluefeld and his team! We had a really great turn out and after a demo ride, everyone came back to the docks grinning. Some members are ready to build these great little boats! I got to drive one, and they are FUN! Now, I just have to clear out the garage so I can start work building one.

April 2015

An interesting side note is that the CCWBRA has formed a youth program for kids 12 - 15. These boats make great family projects (you can build your own boat) and many families compete amongst themselves. Thanks to everyone who stopped by. Many people asked for more information. In addition to the CCWBRA website, Heber and I will be giving a presentation about these boats and providing information for those interested at the June Cruising Fleet Dinner on Thursday, June 11, 2015 at 6:00 PM in the Waterfront Room. Please call Phyllis Eades at 822-3873 for reservations if you can join us! Hope to see you on the water ... and at the dinner! Junior Activities Over the weekend of February 19th-22nd the SPYC Junior Sailing Team was well represented at the North American Laser Class Association Midwinters East Regatta sailed just off Clearwater Beach. The event was sailed in light to medium winds and extremely cold temperatures, so cold that the boats had ice in their cockpits early on Friday morning. Our top performer was recent Opti Graduate Blaire McCarthy sailing in the Laser 4.7 fleet. Blaire scored 4 race wins in the 8 race series winning the event by 7 points over her nearest competitor. In the Laser Radial Division, Nic Baird was our top performer finishing 9th overall in the highly competitive 118-boat fleet. Nic was closely followed by Liam McCarthy in 28th, Hannah Steadman in 36th, Kyle Dochoda in 56th, Emily Wright in 58th and Grant Boicheff in 85th.

The Wing Shooters Society is an association of St. Petersburg Yacht Club members sharing an interest in clay target shooting sports, and/or game bird wing shooting sports. WSS membership is open to all male members of the SPYC and we actively seek new members on a continuing basis. Annual dues for membership are $50 which is used to defray various expenses of the society and to provide educational and informative material for members. In addition to our weekly outings to various Bay area clays shooting venues, members also organize periodic trips for actual wing shooting adventures. Members also engage their passion for shot gunning as they travel, by seeking out opportunities to shoot in the locations they visit. The accompanying photo of John Cartier shooting at the Hacienda La Hueca Gun Club on the Island of Vieques, Puerto Rico, is an example of how some members pursue their passion. To inquire about membership contact Jack Cartier at (727) 235-2724 or e-mail him at jack@cartiercpas.com

The “Twilight Series” races will begin the first Friday in April. Weather permitting, we will sail on Fridays until the end of August. Check your sails and your (boat) bottoms. Prepare to get out of your slips for a fun night. There is one race each evening. Count-down begins at 6:25 PM, somewhere around the Pier. Many types of boats come out and sail the course. We have had Moths, 470s, A-Cat, kites and kayaks, just to mention a few. Official competitor classes are Spinnaker, Non-Spinnaker and Cruising. We also provide additional scoring for one-designs if at least five boats compete. Club members may race in our Sonars. Simply call the Sailing Center before Friday and reserve a boat. (There is a unique award for the winning Sonar team at the end of the season.) The Notice of Race (NOR) and the Sailing Instructions (SIs) are on our website. Cruising Fleet News by Angela Kowalik, Fleet Captain

At our February 12th Monthly Meeting, Commodore Harvey Ford provided the annual Commodore’s Address to the Fleet. Not only did we learn a little bit more about him, but Commodore Ford enlightened us about being at the helm of our great club and how its success is all about the members!! And many of those members are boaters, or are part of the Cruising Fleet, and he recognized how much the Cruising Fleet participates in club activities and enjoys what our club has to offer. Speaking of recognition, each year, usually in December, we have an Annual Awards and Holiday dinner at which time some recognition awards are presented to acknowledge our Cruising Fleet for past year Participation and Port Director responsibilities. Along with those recognition accolades is the annual presentation of the Nancy Vildibill Trophy—a perpetual trophy awarded to the person or persons who best reflect the qualities Nancy brought to her role as fleet captain which she held for 5 years. Some of the qualities considered in giving this award are: ● Commitment to success of the cruising fleet ● Promotion of other boating programs and facilities of the club ● Promotion of the FCYC ● Support of the Club through the cruising fleet ● Contributing to make Fleet Activities just plain fun For 2014, the presentation of the Nancy Vildibill Trophy was held at the February Monthly Meeting when both Commodore Harvey Ford and past Fleet Captain Barbara Weller were present to make the presentation. Barbara explained the qualities of the award, and her privilege of working with one couple who were not only active fleet members, but also fleet committee members, who stepped up to take several Port Director responsibilities, who continually promote boating of all types, who promote safe boating by conducting annual USCG Safety Checks, who schedule cruises for other boating groups, who serve as guest speaker at our monthly meetings to share medical knowledge applied to boating and experiences racing around Cuba, who dedicate hours to coordinate and teach the basics of Mah Jongg to other boaters, and who bring just plain fun and enthusiasm to our “docktails” just to name a few reasons for her selection. And without further ado…..the 2014 award goes to….(drum roll)….Dr. Ed & Isabel Hanna.

Kowalik (on Friday), and Mark & Cynthia Cannon (on Saturday). In addition, we were joined by members of the Clearwater Yacht Club cruising fleet for the weekend. Although the weather on Friday Ed & Isabel Hanna was pretty chilly and living up to the “frostbite” reputation, PYCC arranged for “indoor/outdoor” docktails in their poolside room complete with one man band entertainment. Afterward, 18 SPYC members and a number of the CYC members had dinner in the dining room. Saturday and Sunday weather improved considerably. Saturday was “free play” day and everyone did their own thing. Saturday evening some people stayed on boats, others went to downtown Gulfport for the art walk and dinner while several SPYC members went to the PYCC Commodore’s Ball. The band was the full Dazzler quartet and they were spectacular as usual. Sunday morning, at least eight of the SPYC members enjoyed the Sunday brunch before heading home. Everyone appeared to have a good time because at the end of the weekend there were great comments about the food, service and entertainment, even if the weekend started out a little chilly. Special thanks to Port Directors Chris & Sally Plonsky for arranging this great weekend at nearby PYCC—we hope to come back here soon and often!! Upcoming events for the Cruising Fleet to enjoy include: ● Cruising Fleet Luncheon – Thursday, April 9, 2015 ● April cruise to Twin Dolphin Marina – April 24-26 ● May is the two week long Commodore’s Cruise – May 2-17 April’s Cruising Fleet Meeting is a Luncheon meeting on Thursday, April 9, 2015 beginning at noon. Our program will be a preview of our annual May Commodore’s Cruise (CC) presented by each of the CC Port Directors who will describe the activities, festivities, and other happenings for each port of call. For those that ordered Commodore’s Cruise Shirts, this is the time to pick them up! We will also begin sign-up for July’s cruise to SPYC.

Congratulations Ed & Isabel!!! For those who would like to view the perpetual Nancy Vildibill Trophy, it is located in the trophy case right outside the Sailing Secretary’s office. Please pass on your regards to the Hanna’s for their achievement.

For your upcoming planning consideration: No monthly meeting in May (we’ll be on the Commodore’s Cruise). Monthly meetings will resume in June with a Dinner Meeting (another Dinner Meeting in September), and Luncheon meetings in alternate months thereafter. Watch Smooth Sailing for details.

Brrr…Shiver me Timbers!!! For those that may not know, every year our February cruise is dubbed the “frostbite” cruise; a cruise kept close to home with limited planned outdoor activities because you never know what the weather is going to be like. This year was no exception, however there was something a little different. For the first time ever, SPYC cruised into Pasadena Yacht & Country Club (PYCC), AND it happened to be the weekend that they were having their Commodore’s Ball AND it was also their 3rd Friday get together. A triple play weekend!!

As we have done in the past, sign-up for our cruises opens first at the Monthly Meeting and priority for those in attendance, and then later with the Sailing Secretary and on the yacht club website after that time. Please call our Sailing Secretary Phyllis to sign-up for our activities, cruises, and for monthly lunch or dinner meeting reservations at 727-892-6893 or email her at sailingsecretary@spyc.org. Looking forward to seeing you on the water…

After the usual adds and subtracts, nine boats and two iron dinghy’s participated in the February 20-22 weekend festivities which were coordinated by Port Directors Chris & Sally Plonsky on Final Fling. Joining them by vessel were: Camille Iurillo & Joe Petrella on Moondancer, Tim & Diane Connolly on Lady Di 3, Randy & Vicki Stacy on Barefoot’n, Ray & Charlotte Noyes on Bitter Sweet, Tom & Kathy Daniel on Sol Mates, Joe & Ginny Sadler on Slo Gin, Elwyn & Carol Segrest on Fish E. Business Roy & Jeannie Chapman on Blue Eyes (on Saturday) Also joining the group that weekend by “Iron Dinghy” were: Angela & Brian

Broad Reachers by Carol Hansen

This past month has been quite cold and windy. The Broad Reachers did accomplish one nice casual day of sailing out to Bird Island. The weather was perfect and fun was had by all. The day ended with a nice lunch back at the club.

Joanne Simmons & Anne O’Dell

The Planning and Nominating Committee met on Saturday, February 28th to redefine the roles and duties of the Bird Island Officers and Committee Chairs. We now have a nice slate of candidates for the upcoming elections in May. The Broad Reachers will have both, a Winter and Spring Captain to help plan the weekly activities. The Race Captain and Race Committee Chair will have alternates to help with their scheduling. We were so happy to welcome back our Race Captain, Anne O’Dell from her hip replacement surgery!

During our meeting, we were reminiscing about our procedures we use to launch our Prams. The Broad Reachers are so happy to have our new dock, ramp and cleats to make our sailing days more fun and less work. The month of March begins our Rainbow training. Weather permitting of course, we will be practicing starts, mark rounding, and general rules of racing. A Launching the old way team of four sailors will be chosen in the next few weeks to represent the Broad Reachers. This year’s Rainbow Regatta will be held on Tuesday April 21st at Davis Island Yacht Club, hosted by the Mainsheet Mamas. The Broad Reachers are actively searching for Saturday sailors who would Enjoying the new way like to come out and learn how to sail a Pram. We have lots of fun and would love to have you join us. For more information, please contact Captain Joanne Simmons at (727) 381-2343.

Feedback from the Foredeck...

Dear Commodore Ford, I wanted to reach out to you and let you know what a great time many of our out of town guests had at the 2015 Valentines Regatta. I had the pleasure of directing traffic at the launch ramps for over 300 Opti sailors and their parents. Many of these parents took time to tell us what a great regatta it was and how organized everything was this year. As a parent of 2 Junior Sailors at SPYC, we have traveled to many out of town regattas. I feel that all of the work that is done prior to this event by the staff at the Sailing Center is a direct reflection of the success of this event year after year.

Thank You,

Wendy Hicks

I really cannot thank you guys enough for the awesome job you did last weekend. Yes, I have heard the phrase that breeze makes a hero, but you guys really did an awesome job. I have never come out of an event with so much good will from the sailors to the race committee. I actually had folks offer up what a great job y’all were doing out there. Through this whole (slow and drawn-out) process you guys have been awesome – start to finish. Thank you, it makes my job so much easier and frankly more fun when RC is as responsive and proactive as you guys were. I have to add that hearing that Todd and his wife were seeking out sailors on their circle to get feedback was one of the best things I’ve ever heard coming out of RC. A new standard that I intended to share with other clubs as I brag about how well the St Pete NOOD went. Thanks again – you guys are awesome.
