SAILING CAPITAL OF THE SOUTH
COMMODORE’S LOG Chapter 6 Be Proud! History was made the first week in March with the reestablishment of the Habana Race which began in 1930, suspended in 1959, and now – after a 58 year hiatus – was completed with a festive Awards Ceremony recorded by a voluminous international press core at the Hemmingway International Marina on Sunday, March 5th. Our mission for the race has been to revive a rich part of the Yacht Club and yachting history, rejuvenate our relations with the people of Cuba, and to strengthen our relationship with the Hemingway International Yacht Club in Cuba. The race is far more than just another regatta – it is a symbol of human relations, strong camaraderie among sailors, and bridges the gap between the last race in 1959 and 2017. As I stated at the Cuban press conference: we the people of St. Petersburg and Cuba share the same physical geological, oceanographic, and weather ecosystems separated only by the North flowing Gulf Stream. The people of St. Petersburg Yacht Club share the same desires to protect and preserve our shared ecosystems through friendship, understanding, and cooperation. Although the seed was planted in January 2016, with PC Richard Winning’s invitation to Commodore Jose M. Escrich of Hemmingway Marina to join us for a planning reception and dinner to revive this epic regatta to Havana, the mechanics and the groundwork for the event truly began coming together in May of last year. Our team of committed volunteers on the planning committee for the race, have worked tirelessly to not only roll out a fantastic event for our sailors, but to bring back the excitement of this nostalgic event.
I sincerely thank and extend my utmost gratitude to those committed to the success of the revival of the St. Petersburg–Habana Race: George & Beth Pennington (Race Chairs), Fred Higham (legal), Stu Ahman (Ocean Racing), PC Richard Winning (Commodore of the Race), Commodore Escrich (Hemingway International Yacht Club), Donna Sue Marks (Marketing), PC Bill Ballard & Barbara Watson (Race History), Chris Spencer (Government Relations), Al Fox (Cuban Relations), Vicente Amor (ASC Travel), and Kathy Ahern (St. Pete Hotel Rooms & Events). Three management staff who deserve a special mention for their tremendous efforts are Amy Spencer, Shannon Nylander and Shawn Macking whose talents are highly appreciated. I am very proud of the entire staff, not only for their work on the race events, but also for all they do on a daily basis to make the Club more enjoyable to our members! I would like to extend a heartfelt thanks to all our sponsors of the race, especially Jeffrey Hess with The Ball Watch Company, for his enthusiasm, generosity, and contributions to the awards. Being together with Jeffery for the presentation of the watches to the competitors was a personal pleasure for me. Reestablishing this regatta involved significant attention to the details of both Cuban and US policies, protocols, and procedures requiring tremendous amounts of management time and effort. I believe one component contributing to the success of this regatta is the unfailing cooperation and teamwork among the Commodores pictured below. My personal salutation to PC Richard B Winning’s leadership for this regatta just as
The Mission of St. Petersburg Yacht Club is to encourage and support yachting, and provide a comfortable social environment for our members and guests, while preserving and enhancing the Club’s traditions and prestige.

his father, Richard W, as Commodore did 58 years ago! On a personal note: Trisha and I went to Cuba with no expectations other than sampling their Rum – highly recommended. Having spent eight days with two highly educated tour guides, we experienced how the Cuban people actually live, what they actually eat, and what they actually think – an experience we will always treasure! I look forward to seeing you enjoying our Club,

St. Petersburg – Habana Race Revival 2017 By George & Beth Pennington
The St. Petersburg- Habana Race was a huge success with 75 racing boats and 5 support crafts setting sail on February 28th, 2017. Light winds forced the race committee to move the race further south to Cut “C” Range marker to facilitate the start. The winds were more favorable and all Classes had started by 1200. Once in the Gulf of Mexico winds got a little better until late in the day on Wednesday, March 1st. Since everyone wanted to make it to Cuba for the celebrations, and had been sitting dead in the water for several hours, many vessels decided to turn on their motors in order to accomplish this goal. Twenty-one of the seventy-five boats sailed all the way into the Marina Hemingway before the high winds and highs seas closed the marina entrance. All five support boats cruised safely into the Marina Hemingway, whose purpose was to deliver supplies and trophies to the event and back as well as assist our sailors with any medical or safety issues. These vessels were Ariel-skippered by John Sinnott, M.D., Nan Sea J-Nancy Dunn, Uno Mas-Ray Smith, Emotional Rescue-Mark Majeske, and Lucky Jack-Mark Koch. Two of the vessels entered were crewed by wounded veterans, Grand Nellie skippered by Ron Parfeit and Metolius skippered by David Arata and Tim Fetsch. There was one other vessel that was not shown on the scratch sheet. It was the vessel Micara, a Cuban Flag/Registered vessel that needed special permission from the Cuban Government to compete. They finally got the go-ahead but too late to make the start in St. Petersburg. They anchored out in Key West and waited for the fleet to get them and followed the fleet back to Cuba. A special Award was presented to the Skipper of Micara by Commodore Escrich. The results are as follows: The First to Finish/Line Honors – Fomo - Lloyd Thornburg, SPYC, Jorge Gil Trophy Spinnaker Class Winner Fomo - Lloyd Thornburg, SPYC, Gidge Gandy Trophy & a Ball Watch Spinnaker A 1st Place – Fomo – Lloyd Thornburg, SPYC Spinnaker B 1st Place – Back Off – Tony Barrett, SPSA Cruiser Class Winner - Graycious - Tiffany Ball Watch Trophy & a Ball Watch Cruiser A 1st Place - Graycious – John Noble, SPYC Cruiser B 1st Place – Patience – David Kilcoyne, SPYC Cruiser C 1st Place – Seabee – Richard Kinard, STC Cruiser D No Finishers Non-Spinnaker 1st Place – Sleeper Christopher/Fred Brown, SPYC, Non- Spinnaker Silver Cup & a Ball Watch Multihull 1st Place – Cool Cat 1 – John McMasters, SPYC, Multihull Gold Cup & a Ball Watch We would like take this opportunity to thank all of our Committees that have contributed, as many have worked tirelessly for this event to be a success. Quantum J/70 Midwinter Championships ON
TH
ER
by Todd Fedyszyn E W AT
Over the weekend of February 24th-26th, SPYC hosted fifty-two of the top J/70 teams around for the 2017 Quantum J/70 Midwinter Championships. Teams came from all corners of the USA, Canada and even Mexico to compete on the waters of Tampa Bay. Conditions for the event were a little tricky, with racing cancelled on day one due to light air, but with improving breeze on day two and three. Fortunately the wind gods cooperated and day two and three were great sailing days. Tim Healy showed dominance across all the different conditions edging out Will Welles by a point for the overall win. John Brim sailed a solid regatta to finish in 3rd place overall just 10 point’s back. In the Corinthian division, Andrew Fisher and his team on Button Fly sailed an excellent regatta, finishing 17th overall and 1st overall amateur team. SPYC had 6 teams competing in the event. David Mendelblatt and Blaire McCarthy finished in 26th and 27th overall and were also the 4th and 5th placed amateur teams. It is also important to note that SPYC had 7 junior sailors competing in the event. Blaire McCarthy led an all youth team comprised of Emma Shakespeare, Callista Hopkins, Heather Kerns and Cameron Delgado. Also competing were Emily Allen and Philip Peterson, each crewing on different boats. *Photo Credits: Courtesy of “Phil Pape” www.philpape.photography
Thistle Midwinters East Regatta
by Todd Fedyszyn
From March 1st-3rd, SPYC hosted thirty-four Thistles for the classes annual Midwinters East Championship Regatta. The first two days saw near perfect conditions with early afternoon sea breezes and temperatures in the high 70’s. However, Mother Nature did not cooperate on day three bringing big breezes and huge waves. SPYC’s Race Committee did a great job getting in three races, quickly and efficiently on each of the first two days. Mike Ingham and team showed great speed and smarts across the series to take the overall win by 4 points over Greg Griffin. Kyle Finefrock, Mike Gillum and Patrick O’Conner rounded out the top five.

The SPYC Junior Sailing Team has had another great month with sailors competing in multiple events and in multiple classes. The Opti sailors continue to improve and are looking forward to team trials in May, our High School sailors have had another great year and the laser team is preparing for a summer filled with events on the west coast. Over the weekend of March 4-5 our SPYC Opti Sailors travelled to Jensen Beach to compete in the annual Sunshine State Championships. 8 Opti RWB, and 3 green fleet sailors made the trek across the state looking for a last chance to try and qualify for team trials. Conditions for the event were extreme with 18-22 knots of wind on Saturday and 25-30knots on Sunday. The team showed huge improvement in the big breeze conditions with several sailors recording top finishes. The following sailors competed for SPYC: Bella Shakespeare, Ava Shakespeare, Dorothy Mendelblatt, Ethan Danielson, Kate Danielson, Logan Rimel, Hanna Hishida, Sidney Moyer, Brady Moyer, Cole Rogers and Yudai Nishida. The SPYC Junior Sailing Team was also well represented in the Helly Hansen NOOD Regatta with sailors competing in multiple fleets. Emily Allen, doing Foredeck on Jim Lindsay’s J 24 took home the overall win in the J/24 fleet. Grant Boicheff competed on Matt Wake’s Far East 28r in the ORC division and the team of Blaire McCarthy, Emma Shakespeare, Callista Hopkins and Cameron Delgado competed on a J/70.

Our Valentine's Race was held on Saturday, February 10th. First place went to one of our new Broads, Marti Cochran; Joanne Simmons took 2nd place, and Gail Poffenberger came in third. Another of our new Broads, Gwen Mann, decided to take the quick route to enter her Pram, fortunately, only half of her boat filled with water! February 17th was our second FWSA Interclub with six clubs participating for a total of 11 sailors. Joanne Simmons was our 1st place winner and Barbara Arnold came in third. Welcome Aboard!!! For our February “Frostbite” cruise, we had a change of venue and venture across Tampa Bay to Twin Dolphin Marina in Bradenton. The weather wasn’t so bad after all and nine boats made the crossing. Friday night we had get-together “docktails” before dining at Pier 22. On Saturday most enjoyed the downtown market and a quick nap during a brief sprinkling shower. Later that evening some had a cookout, experienced some culture and others dined downtown while “holding the key”. On Sunday, a few walked into town for a great breakfast before heading home. It was another great cruise coordinated by Tim and Dianne Connolly, our Port Directors for this cruise.

Our April 13th Luncheon Program Meeting will feature a preview of the activities and events planned for our annual May Commodore’s Cruise; presented by each of the Port Directors who will describe some of the festivities and fun happenings they have planned for each port of call. For those that ordered Commodore’s Cruise Shirts, this is the time to pick them up! Even if you aren’t going on this cruise, you should come hear what you’re missing! We will also begin sign-up for July’s cruise to SPYC at this time.
We plan to kickoff our 2017 Commodore’s Cruise at Pass-a-Grille on Friday April 28th with a Caribbean Sunset Celebration on the patio deck at 5:30pm. Come join us! Inquire or sign-up for our events on the SPYC Website, Cruising Fleet page. Looking forward to seeing you on the water …

Salt Water Anglers by Capt. Wayne Andrews The SPYC Saltwater Anglers – Inshore Fishing Heating Up. We had a great day fishing the flats in Tampa Bay. Fish are plentiful, and we managed to find Slot Snook early in the season. Let’s get out on the water in bay boats more often, great fun to be had. Come to our regular monthly meetings to learn more about where, when and how to catch these tasty fish.
Flats fishing was on fire, one for the photo and one on the line
The Saltwater Anglers meet at 6:00pm on the second Wednesday of every month at the Downtown Clubhouse. Please come join us at our next meeting on April 12th, or sign up on SPYC.org; click on the “Clubs” tab and scroll down to Saltwater Anglers, click on the Sign Up & Contact Info Form and get your email on the list. You can also check out the action on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/groups/SPYCAnglers/. Hope to see you at the meeting or out fishing soon! 14

Our Riders have been enjoying this wonderful spring weather while logging some miles on their motorcycles. On March 7th Norm led a ride to Woody’s on the River in Ellenton where we relaxed and had lunch. Then later in the month we took a scenic ride to Steinhatchee, FL where we did a bit of fishing and stayed overnight in cabins at the Steinhatchee River Inn. April 5th, you will find us at the Sun ‘N Fun International Fly-In located in Lakeland, FL. We are also planning a ride in August or September to North Carolina to tackle the Rattler, and possibly the Tail of the Dragon. We would also like to welcome our newest Riders Club member Bob Kline, who rides a new Harley Street Glide (pictured below).
Join us at our next meeting on April 18th. Our meetings are held the 3rd Tuesday of each month at the downtown club at 6:15 pm. Contact any member for more information on joining our adventures…….

Back to school…another flying lesson begins with a basic walk around, then we went through the checklist. I would read out the item and the instructor would take me through what it meant; while actually carrying out the check at the same time. Now I was beginning to understand the process and things were fitting into place from the previous lesson. I do most of the taxiing, still learning how to use the brakes. The takeoff run was great, having most of the control, the instructor helped to keep it down the centerline. He explained as the aircraft left the ground it will want to turn left, so I was able to anticipate this with some control input. Tasks were assigned to me to maintain 3,000ft, 90kts Flight out over the beach using attitude, controls, trim, throttle etc. After a few tries it seems relatively straight forward and I began to get the hang of straight and level flight. A few more maneuvers and then we were on our way back. We did a gliding descent from 3,000ft to 1,400ft, as the instructor is explaining what’s happening and why we are doing it this way. I’m at the controls all the way down, obviously with some help, and receiving excellent verbal instructions. This was my first real attempt at landing which went very smooth without any problems, an amazing feeling! Now if I can just get the hang of ATC talk... The Cessna 172, which I’ve been learning to fly in, is an amazing aircraft. First seen in 1956 and is still in production today with over 43,000 being produced. This plane is the perfect platform for training and I am sure a vast number of pilots cut their teeth on this bird. The next Flying Club meeting will be Sunday April 9th at the Downtown Clubhouse, where we will have a guest speaker. Cocktails 5pm, meeting 6pm and optional dinner 7pm. A confirmation e-mail will be sent to all members, please ensure we have everyones e-mail address.

Learn More About the Salty Sisters at www.saltysisters.org Donna Papa, Class of 2015, is the winner of the Jobin Trophy. This award shall be awarded to the winner of a series of pram races for the inexperienced sailors only. The Valentine’s Day Regatta was held in February with 326 competitors ranging from youngsters in prams up to teens sailing Lasers. Salty Race Committee volunteers were L-R: Jennifer Parramore, Kathy Ahern, Gina BowdenPierce, Barbara Mehaffey and Janet Walker. Missing from the photo is Beth Pennington who was RC for the Laser course. On February 3, the SPYC Distance Classic Regatta to Venice, FL was held with twelve boats competing. Gloria Davis, Selga Sakss and Nancy Dunn as well as her husband, John Dunn served as the race committee. Our Valentine’s luncheon was a lovely affair with all the pretty table centerpieces and women dressed in various shades of pink and red. The NautiCats entertained us with some beautiful songs. Dave Perry, author of Understanding the Racing Rules of Sailing, conducted a North U Rules & Tactics Seminar at SPYC in March. Salty Sisters Marti Cochran, Sarah Richards, Diane Fowler, Heather LeLanne and Mary Moosbrugger attended this seminar. Salty Sisters attending the Paleo Preserve & Museum tour saw a variety of Florida life represented in Florida’s past by the bones excavated in the Ruskin area.

If you have ever hunted or shot targets in your past, you may want to attend a Wingshooters meeting on the second Thursday of the month at 6:00pm. Shotguns are our primary focus and clay “birds” our primary targets. Every Friday we shoot at various venues around Tampa Bay. We shoot 100 or so rounds a day and then go out for a lunch and camaraderie. We have members who have never before shot like this and now are very competitive!
“Here’s Bob Fillingham breaking clays and getting encouragement from the rest of his group.” “Shooting is done in a woodsy setting, using semi autos or over/under shotguns.”
It was a beautiful day at Cove Cay Golf Course in Clearwater. T he weather was quite chilly when we started at 11am but the sun was warm by 2pm. There were 22 golfers who enjoyed this lovely and well-kept course. We finished the day with a luncheon sponsored by the golf group. The first place winners with a score of -2 were Larry Heinkel, Dave Evans, Dennis Augur and Steve Hamlin. The second place team who won on a match of cards with a score of +4 included Bob Bedford, Mike McDonough and John Arsenault. Closest to the pins on par 3’s were Sandy Hall and Herb Anderson. Closest to the line was Karen Lieberman. A good day was had by all. On a sad note, this month we lost two long time members. A short time after the SPYC Golf Group was formed, Helen DeWalt and her husband Dale took on the responsibility of coordinating guest speakers, presenting the rule of the month and proper golf etiquette, and organizing monthly golf outings. After she passed the torch to Gene and Nancy Strite, she continued as a competitive playing member of our group. John Lesniak was an active member of the Golf Group for many years and donated the first Golfer of the Year trophy, which is still used for our Male Golfer of the Year Award. We shall miss them both. The golf group also recently played at Countryside Country Club in Clearwater on March 20th. Coming Soon - Mark your calendars for the annual Golf Group Member Guest Tournament to be held on Thursday, April 13th at St. Pete Country Club, with a 1pm shotgun scramble. It is open to all members of the Golf Group and the Yacht Club. The fee is $76 which includes a BBQ, golfing, and lots of prizes. Please contact Susan Arsenault for more info at sueatp@aol.com.
“ This man is at the ready to shout ‘pull’ as others intently wait to see if he can hit his clays on this windy day.”
“Mark Foster and Joe Petrella proving that practice helps.”
“Load ‘em up and let’s get out on the course.”

A HEARTFELT “THANK YOU” Helen DeWalt’s Celebration of Life was hosted by her family at the St. Petersburg Yacht Club on Saturday, March 4th. The centerpiece table decorations, made by family members, were sets of three glass containers of varying heights filled with candles and bound together with gold nautical braid. They are very lovely and the family has graciously donated them to the Club. The Salty Sisters wish to extend a heartfelt “Thank You” to Helen’s sister, Betty Baker, Helen’s sons Steve Branson and Eric Branson and all of the family members for their kindhearted donation.
