COMMODORE’S LOG
C
hapter 3 – January is a natural time for reflection…what happened last year and what will happen next year… kumbaya… So, take 2 minutes, maybe 3 if you had a particularly busy year, and get over it. Just Google yourself... it’s all right there anyway. Date stamped, with shopping preferences, your friends’ names and a hot link to Russia where all of your passwords presently reside. That takes all of the pressure off. Now let’s move forward.
On a related note, we successfully managed our 18th America’s Disabled / Open Regatta in early December thanks to PC Ballard and Janet Walker and other volunteers like David Knowlton, Maurice McGough, Tom Wheatley, Gina Pierce and Tom Pierce. I attended the Skippers’ Meeting and the determined bunch of seasoned sailors hustled in and out like any other regatta. They even navigated the further narrowed and treacherous water access to the Sailing Center caused by the Boat Show.
I am excited to remind our Club that we are known as the Race Management Club of the World. We even have a prestigious trophy named for us that is presented annually to the club with the most outstanding race management for the year. We even won it ourselves in 2007. Well, in honor of that tradition and in recognition of the passing in 2014 of one of the premier race managers of all time, our own PC Pat Seidenspinner, we have launched a mission to train more race managers within our Club and to ultimately establish a Race Management Institute. In the course of one year, I will estimate that we start over 750 races of all shapes and sizes. We have probably only a few people who start 90% of those races…George and Beth Pennington, Gloria Davis, Selga Sakss, Todd Fedyszyn, Shawn Macking, Tom Farquhar and a handful of others, like Janet Walker and Rich and Char Doyle who organize them. But we need race managers and the entire country needs race managers, judges (like Tom Rinda and Susan Wallace), juries, PROs (like Bill Ballard), stake boat people and on and on. The first edition of this will occur this spring and, as it evolves, hopefully, it will have a large and ultimately national profile. For now, unlike most clubs, we already have our own great “faculty” to teach the program, as well as the perfect “campus”. Now, we just need students. Most race management occurs on shore and most race management is about organizational skills and the ability to track some basic rules. Racing experience helps, but many of the best race managers simply love to manage people and events and enjoy the waterfront element. I am, therefore, making a special request that every member consider taking this course and to help in promoting it to your friends. The future of sailboat racing and power boating is bright for our Club and it will always be our centerpiece, but to remain an attractive venue for racing, we, as a Club, must re-commit to excellence in race management….hence the Trophy.
One more sailing note…we are building sailors and citizens at our Club. A team of our SPYC youth sailors participated in the 2014 J-24 Worlds in September in Rhode Island finishing near the middle of the 70 boat fleet. It was a real team effort by Liam McCarthy, Nevin Avila, Claire Dennis, Josh Dochoda, Max Nickbarg, Emily Wright, the Broad Reachers, the Salty Sisters, David Mendelblatt, Todd Fedyszyn and you as Members. These sailors, as any of us might be in our own boating travels, are unofficial ambassadors for our Club and each of us play a part in furthering the honor and integrity of our Club. I thank them for that and for the great team photo and thank you letter that came to me after the event. Somebody is teaching great citizenship at the Sailing Center.

I continue to receive glowing emails from members regarding Chef Joseph and the variety of adjustments that our GM Marc Reydams is making at the Club. We continue to reverse the less than positive trend we had been experiencing in delivery of our food quality and consistency. Despite a zero dues increase this year, we continue to put $70,000 per month into reserves. Such reserves are occasionally tapped for such things as the Main Club landscaping last year, HVAC units, and the like, but the aggregate reserve amount continues to climb so that we will be in a position to replace our aging docks when the time arrives or re-carpet the Club or paint the exterior or replace boats, all without a costly bank loan or assessment. Happy New Year and please keep sending in your cards and letters. - Harvey Ford

St. Petersburg Yacht Club Extends AN INVITATION TO JOIN THE RACE COMMITTEE TEAM
Our mission is two-fold: 1. To provide and promote training for all positions within the race committee to continue a tradition of excellent SPYC regional, national as well as international racing events. 2. To perpetuate a foundation of involved members to support all racing endeavors into the future and enjoy the camaraderie of the race committee. Without the help of Race Committee volunteers, sailing events each year would simply not be possible.
The St Petersburg Yacht Club Race Committee is dedicated to running top quality sailing events while providing a fair and safe race environment for the competing sailors. FAQ
• I have never volunteered for Race Committee before. How will I know what to do? • We welcome all levels of experience. The best way to learn is hands-on. Come out to an event and one of our experienced race committee members will be happy to teach you the ropes. For more formal training, we offer race committee clinics throughout the year. • When and how often do I have to volunteer? • You can volunteer at any time during the year. We provide an online sign-up form and you can volunteer for as few as one event per year, although we encourage you to come out at least a few times a year. When you sign up for an event, you do not have to volunteer your entire weekend; you can sign up for only one day of a regatta. You can also sign up as an alternate - someone who we can call when we are short-handed.
To receive description of positions, races and sign up for the RC Team, please go to www.spyc.org , Log On, Click on Sailing, and Scroll down to Race Committee. There will be a meeting in February for all Race Committee members and recruits.
Date & more information to follow. If you have more questions or would like to be put on our e-mail list to receive RC information, please contact Sailing Secretary Phyllis Eades at 727-892-6892 or sailingsecretary@spyc.org
WE LOOK FORWARD TO SEEING YOU ON THE WATER! 4

America’s Disabled Open Regatta December 5 – 7, 2014 St Petersburg Yacht Club was honored to host the America’s Disabled/Open Regatta at the St Petersburg Sailing Center, the eighteenth consecutive time our club has conducted this international event. Forty nine sailors from Canada, Great Britain, Ireland, Sweden and the USA sailed in twelve Sonar and thirteen 2.4mR class boats modified as needed with adaptive equipment. This year was especially unique as we welcomed three Sonar teams made up entirely of wounded veterans from various branches of the US military. We also were pleased to have sailors from the Judd Goldman Sailing Foundation (jgasf@juddgoldmansailing.org).

The Gruson Milam Trophy, donated by Linda Merkle, is awarded to the top female skipper and the top female crew. It was won by Megan Pascoe (GBR) and Hannah Stodel (GBR) respectively and presented by our own Jen French, silver medalist at the Paralympic games. Over the three days, six races were sailed with mixed winds. Saturday was a poor day for sailing, but once again the Sunshine Rotary Club (http://rotaryclubstpete.com) prepared their pancake/sausage breakfast extraordinaire. After the breakfast, the sailors enjoyed the amenities of our beautiful downtown, including the boat show and the Santa Clause parade. All results are posted on the website www.spyc.org under regattas. Many thanks to the race committee headed by PRO Bill Ballard - Marion Ballard, Bud and Joan Karins, Jen and Tim French, Selga Sakss, Tom and Gina Pierce, Barbara Shaffer, Gloria Davis, Dan Haney, Stew Ahman, Tom Wheatley, David Knowlton, Maurice McGough, Tom Shevlin, Norm and Susan Huff, judges Ann Newton, Henry Moore and Barb Shaffer and Chairperson Janet Walker, plus the staff at the SPSC.

egister now to have an Auxiliary Coast Guard Squadron Examiner conduct a survey of your boat and motorized dingy safety equipment right at your slip to ensure they meet Coast Guard requirements for your safety.
Why do you want a VSC decal? Boats that pass the examination are awarded a distinctive VSC Decal that alerts the Coast Guard, Harbor Patrol, and other law-enforcement agencies that your boat was found to be in full compliance with all Federal and State boating laws. Frequently, such agencies will not detain or board boats displaying a currentyear decal that are otherwise operating safely.

Due to weather, this year’s Turkey Race ended up becoming our Holiday race. We had eight sailors and, of course, our Safety Boat skippered by George Kullman. We are proud to announce that we now have a permanent trophy for the winner of that race. The first recipient is Anne O’Dell, our Race Captain. The race consists of sailing around Bird Island and returning back to our PAG dock. Tove Kullman and Tricia Billings chose the eastern route, while the other six sailors selected the western course. Our Captain Joanne Simmons went aground, but she recovered and finished third overall, with Tove taking second place.
Judy Clapp represented the Broad Reachers for an FWSA interclub race on Dec. 9th at the Sailing Center, hosted by the Salty Sisters. With very gusty winds, she capsized, but was able to “right” her pram, get back in and continue to sail.

Bird Island Race
On December 13th, we will be holding our annual Christmas party and luncheon, followed by a Chinese auction. January 6th, the Broad Reachers will be having our mid-year General meeting and luncheon. On January 21st, the Broads will be hosting the FWSA General Meeting and take pleasure in announcing that Jen French will be the keynote speaker. Next month, we are planning a Mystery Race and a class on Race Committee procedures for sailing at PAG.
Cruising Fleet by Angela Kowalik, Fleet Captain
Happy New Year!!! The Fourth Annual Lighting of the Docks was held on Saturday, December 6, 2014 and was well attended by both fleet and non-fleet boaters as well as many nonboaters who just wanted to come out to the docks and help us all celebrate the seasons!! Many special thanks to our Dockmasters Adam Harnen & John Toberman who decorated the dock, and put in extra time and effort to be on hand to welcome everyone to the docks and cater to our whims! Thanks also to Port Captain Bert Rachel who helped coordinate the event with me, and worked with club management to get us a REAL tree on the dock, and to Commodore Harvey Ford (and his lovely wife Kathleen) for being on hand to participate and welcome all the dock walkers! We had quite a turnout on the docks this year, the largest crowd and participation yet by some accounts, and with many noshes and libations to share. The evening was pleasant with a cool ocean breeze and a full moon to boot which helped as we walked the dock to enjoy and appreciate all the boats and their decorations! What a great marina we have, at an awesome and picturesque location, and with such a great group of friends! We are looking forward to making this an even larger heralded part of the SPYC Holiday Celebrations for everyone’s continued enjoyment. I want to thank all of the boaters who took time to decorate your boats, and to all who came out to see them, and to everyone who helped spread the Holiday Cheer!
Upcoming events for the Cruising Fleet to enjoy include: • Cruising Fleet Luncheon – Thursday, January 8, 2015. • January cruise to our own downtown SPYC docks – January 23-25, 2015 • Vessel Safety Inspection – Sunday, January 25, 2015 • February cruise to Pasadena Yacht & Country Club – February 20-22, 2015. January’s Cruising Fleet Luncheon is Thursday, January 8, 2015 at noon. Our January luncheon speaker is Maurice McGough, who will speak to us about his continuation of the Northern part of the Great Loop cruise and his experiences aboard his fine vessel “Quotidian”. Also in January, the Fleet will be at our own docks downtown the weekend of January 23-25. Stop by and say hi! On that Sunday, January 25, the Aux. Coast Guard Squadron will be on hand to conduct the annual Vessel Safety Check at the downtown docks (as well as the other SPYC marina locations). It’s always good to have that VSC sticker (see the related ad for more information) Looking ahead, we are beginning to make plans for our annual May Commodore’s Cruise starting with the shirts! Shirt ordering will begin in January, and so will the excitement start to build. Meanwhile, we have other great cruises planned in the spring leading up to the Commodore’s Cruise. As we have done in the past, sign-up for our cruises
opens first at the Monthly Meeting and priority for those in attendance, and then later with the Sailing Secretary and on the website after that time. Please call our Sailing Secretary Phyllis to sign-up for our activities, cruise and/ or luncheon reservations at 727-892-6893 or email her at sailingsecretary@spyc.org. Seas the day and go boating!!! Power Boating 101 As an old sailor, I always heard (and experienced) that when two sailboats are sailing the same or near course … it is a “race” as skippers trim sail and try to squeak maximum horsepower from each puff of wind. It takes knowing your boat and how she performs in different situations. I have learned this is the same principle with power boating. It isn’t just setting the auto pilot or GPS. That straight line may not get you where you think you should be going! Wave action, tide, current, etc. all make a huge difference on getting where you are going and squeaking maximum efficiency out of your boat. On January 10, 2015, the Power Boat Competition committee is holding an open event to introduce all members (sail and power) to the sport of predicted logging in a fun, informal and uncomplicated fashion. Starting at 1 p.m. at our main downtown docks, we will briefly hold a skipper’s meeting (including all crew) followed by an on-water demonstration winding up with a social by the dockmaster’s office after the event. We will have options for boaters to participate including riding as a participant on some else’s boat and using your own with experienced participants aboard. For more information and to sign up, please call our Sailing Secretary, Phyllis Eades, at 727-822-3873 or e-mail me at barbara.weller221@yahoo.com. Hope to see you on the water …

An Entertainment Committee Event
By Nancy Strite
A
very chilly and windy morning welcomed our golfers at Pasadena Y & CC. There were several cancellations, and after a few holes the temperature warmed up to (almost) playable conditions. First place winners were Rich Lander, Gene Strite, John Arsenault and Fred Alberg; 2nd, Emmett Coe, Robert Weir and Myra McShane; 3rd, Jerry Crawford, Mike McDonough, Gail Weir and David Evans. Our Christmas Party proved to be the “Event of the Year”, chaired by Susan Arsenault and Marilyn Hartman. Four hours of fun, food, dancing and friendship made for an evening to be remembered. Thanks to the Wait Staff and bartenders Mike and Jonathan for so ably handling the crowd. Myra McShane was a repeat winner for Female Golfer of the Year and Joe Hartman won the Male Golfer of the Year. Congratulations to both of them. Emmett Coe was the big 50-3020 winner, and in my book, John Lesniak will go down as the dancer with the most stamina, twirling ladies around all evening to the music of the Dave Maggio Band. Thanks and kudos to Susan, Marilyn and husbands!
