COMMODORE’S LOG
C
hapter 4 – We took a survey of readers and it seems that more and more people are turning to our little monthly Smooth Sailing for their local and international news… well, okay, I asked a few of my friends. That’s a survey isn’t it? So stay tuned for the news and weather. On these pages reside all that Members need to know. Food, beverage, recreation, business and travel, with no ads or commercials. Please thank the staff and all contributors for producing such a professional publication on a tight allowance. So “Laissez Les Bon Temps Rouler!”… the Super Bowl is over, Mardi Gras is upon us, Valentine’s Day approaches and there are some great reasons to stop into the Club. In the past month, we hosted the Snipe racers and the Master Driver Team racers, while we prepared for the upcoming Valentine’s Day Regatta, the NOOD and the 505 Midwinters all in February. All of which occurred and continue to occur year after year primarily because of sailors, young and old, who love the sport, but also because of our great facilities, winter weather and our volunteers. Off the water, we enjoyed another fun Employee Holiday Party, with the employees each generously bringing wrapped gifts that were then delivered to the Boca Ciega Center. Much thanks to the Members who volunteered their day to act (and I meant act) as servers, bar keeps, cleaners, hostesses and food preparers (as “staff”, you only get last names here: Hattons, Rutland, Millers, Fraze, Birkenstock, Park, Fulmer, Falkingham, Livingston, Jensen & Benoot). It is a heart-warming experience to be so graciously treated by the employees as they had their day as “members”. No wonder we have such a great Club. We also hosted the annual Gold & Platinum Party to recognize our longest term members. Every month we celebrate and announce our new Members as they join the Club, but we hope that every new Member will aspire to and will one day become a Gold or Platinum Member. The event was moved to January this year due to the rush of other events that already happen in late September and October. We rustled in 2015 profitably with a multitude of well-run and properly priced events during the holidays and, maybe it’s my scary demeanor, but I have received almost exclusively positive comments regarding the Club. I don’t think that it should be a deterrent that persons with negative comments all end up sitting in the front position on my sailboat on the

rail, in heavy air, upwind. Hey, that’s racing. But the big news for 2015 and beyond, regardless of your opinion on the matter, is the improvement of relations with Cuba. Our Club presently has no plans for a race and we will be deferring entirely to the wishes of US and Cuban officials and business leaders. Any discussions or rumors to the contrary are simply untrue and I encourage all of you to respect the long and careful diplomatic process that is unfolding. If it is meant to happen, it will and, if it then makes sense for the Club, we will participate, but not before. Now, I must reflect on 50 years ago (Cuba closed 55 years ago, but 50 is easier). A large percentage of our members have no recollection of that time. Good news and bad news, I do have such recollection. Tom Downs was Commodore, gas was 31 cents, Hurricane Betsy hit Florida, the Pope’s first ever visit to the US, Mary Poppins and My Fair Lady dominated the screens and, more importantly, the first Grateful Dead concert….and our Club was a nubile 56 years old. Similarly, it is hard to believe that our needed journey into outer space at Bradford Coach House, the First Ave North closure and the garage construction were almost 25 years ago. When you are in your kitchen stirring up such adventures, it seems like an eternity, but now, in retrospect, they happened in a blink. Thanks to Harry Moorefield, David Knowlton, John Barger, Tom Allison, Bill Hough and many more for their leadership though that tough period. And Don Krippendorf ceremoniously burned our mortgage in 2004 signaling the completion. This Club is all about permanency and consistency and it is right to occasionally reflect on that and to reinforce its importance to all of us. Most of us are not here for just a few years of boating or revelry or something for our resume. We need to know that we are part of something quietly grand. Say hallelujah. The end. - Harvey Ford

INTRODUCING COCKTAIL CLASS
WOODEN BOAT RACING! The cocktail class wooden boat is an 8’ one-design runabout designed by Charles MacGregor in 1939 and powered by 6 or 8 hp outboards. These boats are economical, easily constructed, fun to run and ideal for racing at all skill levels and ages! Since 2010 there has been an amazing resurgence of building and racing these runabouts in 33 states and 7 countries. Members of the Cocktail Class Wooden Boat Racing Association (“CCWBRA”) travel around the country to compete in different regattas and attend boat shows. Most recently, the Smyrna Yacht Club in New Smyrna Beach, Florida established a very active fleet of these fun little boats and held their very successful cocktail class inaugural regatta in August of 2014. Several other yacht clubs in the FCYC council are also considering building fleets of these boats. Your Power Boat Competition Committee is exploring the possibility of bringing this type of boating to St. Pete. We really love that the opportunity to build and race your own cocktail class boat can be a family event! In addition to its regular program, CCWBRA offers a youth program for ages 12 -15 built around the USCG Boater’s Safety Course and

encourages youth participation in the sport. Please check out the CCWBRA website at http://www.ccwbra.com. The Smyrna Yacht Club is hosting the CCWBRA Mid-Winters in New Smyrna Beach, FL on February 28, 2015. Our club members have been invited to visit SYC during the Mid-Winters to learn more about this boat and regattas. Several members are planning to attend and we’d be very happy to have you join us. To sign up, please call our Sailing Secretary, Phyllis Eades, at 727-822-3873 or e-mail me at barbara. weller221@yahoo.com. Hope to see you on the water … Barbara Weller, Power Boat Competition Chair
Junior Activities
February 2015
The SPYC Junior Sailing Team competed at the annual Coral Reef Yacht Club Orange Bowl International Youth Regatta over the 2014 Christmas Holidays. Sailed on the waters of Biscayne, over 700 youth sailors from 15 different countries participated in the four-day event held on 5 different courses. Sailing in the open International I420 division, SPYC’s Josh and Kyle Dochoda finished a strong 3rd overall in the 30boat fleet. The brothers are new to the boat, and are quickly moving up the ranks! Sailing in the 125-boat Laser Radial Division, SPYC’s Nic Baird finished in 5th overall in the 6 race series. Nic was closely followed by his brother Ty in 14th overall, Emily Wright in 21st overall and 6th female, Hannah Steadman in 43rd and Grant Boicheff in 59th. Also sailing were Nevin Avila and Elizabeth Shanahan. On the Opti RWB course, SPYC sailors Ethan Danielson and Anika Boicheff finished in 118th and 147th in the 250-boat fleet. Over on the green line, SPYC’s Kate Danielson finished 32nd and Trent Boicheff finished 63rd.

Article By: Fred Stansberry As the new year began most members of the WSS were honing their shooting skills and making last minute tweaks to their equipment in anticipation of the big charity shoot sponsored by the 1st U.S. Volunteer Cavalry Regiment “Rough Riders”, Inc. The Rough Riders use this big annual event to raise funds for the various charities they support, ranging from All Children’s Hospital to Southeastern Guide Dogs and their Paws for Patriots program. On Saturday morning January 10th, approximately 300 shooters from around the Bay area gathered to support this worthwhile event. SPYC was well represented by four teams of four shooters each. The sixteen WSS members pictured above represented the SPYC admirably. As expected our All-Star team of RC Bob Birkenstock, John Cartier, Ryan Holcombe and Jeff Locker finished in the top ten teams with some excellent shooting. The other three SPYC teams also faired well above average in the standings.

SPYC Employees Giving to the Community As a part of the Annual SPYC Employee Holiday Party held on January 5th, each employee brought a gift to donate to The Boca Ciega Center, a not for profit retirement facility in Gulfport. On January 8th, General Manager, Marc Reydams, and Director of Membership, Amy Spencer, delivered the treasured gifts to an excited group of special retirees. They were extremely grateful to receive gifts that they normally do not receive and, most importantly, they were made to feel special by the thoughtfulness of SPYC’s group of hard workers.

orty golfers tried again to play the Copperhead Course at Innisbrook, but again the rains came and play was cancelled for the second time. Golfers all received a voucher to come back on a nicer day. Our first monthly meeting of the New Year featured Brianne Murphy of Murphy’s Golf Academy as our guest speaker. Brianne is a certified LPGA teaching professional. She teaches exercises for golf as an integral part of her program. Brianne has partnered with Titliest Performance Institute which is the leading educational organization and research facility dedicated to the study of how the human body functions in relation to the golf swing. A full TPI screening checks 12 swing flaws which are associated with your own body limitations. It was amazing to see how a few simple exercises can strengthen or improve mobility. Rich Lander was a very willing demonstration volunteer. Our January outing will be at the new Esplanade Golf Club at Lakewood Ranch. It is always a treat to play these well manicured courses at that location. Plans are in the works for our yearly Member Guest event to be held in April at Feather Sound CC.

We will do this again at the February ARC meeting, where we will talk to sailors and others on HF radio. Come and join us and learn what SSB HF radio is all about. We are still working to be able to use our SSB HF equipment remotely from anywhere with an internet connection. Hopefully that will soon be a reality, so
that from home we can easily talk to our friends on the Regata del Sol al Sol and on other sailing adventures. SPYC ARC socializes on-the-air every Monday on our VHF Net at 17:30 on 147.030 MHz where people join us locally or from around the world on Echolink. Broad Reachers CHRISTMAS PARTY: The Broad Reacher’s 2014 Christmas party was a great success on December 13th. Everyone enjoyed the festivities and dressed in holiday attire. Nancy Strite and Joanne Simmons look especially festive in front of the Christmas tree.
by Anne O’Dell
GENERAL MEETING FOR BROAD REACHERS The January 3rd meeting was held at PAG. There were over 16 Broads present. Captain Joanne Simmons gave the General Meeting report, which highlighted our club and FWSA sailing events. She also reviewed the social festivities we had so far this year. At this time we have 48 members with the latest addition of Gracie Van Veldhuizen. Race Captain, Anne O’Dell, reported on our Saturday sailing events and the major projects that have been accomplished so far this year. Jen and JP Sailing
SPECIAL EVENTS:
Nancy Strite and Joanne Simmons
The Broads participated in a Chinese auction in which they enjoyed taking away gifts from each other. There was a table of gifts and many Broads had trouble deciding which gift to choose.
FWSA - FLORIDA WOMEN’S SAILING ASSOCIATION The FWSA General Meeting and luncheon, hosted by the Broad Reachers at SPYC PassA-Grille, is planned for January 21st. At the meeting, members from nine different sailing clubs will be fortunate enough to hear a presentation by Jen French.
Jen and US Disabled Sailing (Team USA) teammate, JP Creignou, won a silver medal at the London 2012 Paralympic Games sailing a Skud18. [5] She will present Novice to Medalist: How to Develop your Sailing Skills. In 2012, she was awarded the 2012 Rolex Yachtwoman of the Year; the first woman with a disability to be honored with this award.
Nita George’s gift became a well sought after gift. But eventually she had to give it up to Marilyn Wall. Marilyn kept the animal because it had gone around twice already and no one could take it from her.

Cruising Fleet News by Angela Kowalik, Fleet Captain
Welcome Aboard!!! In December we wrapped up the 2014 Cruising Fleet program with the Annual Awards & Holiday Dinner. This was an enjoyable event and we spent the time reminiscing with everyone about the cruising activities over the past year. We even held a round of The Twelve Days of Christmas and had a private serenade of Happy Birthday by Judy McFadden. I had the pleasure of handing out our 2014 Participation and Port Director appreciation awards on behalf of prior Fleet Captain Barbara Weller. We had quite a large participation over the last year and it seems to be growing this year. That’s quite encouraging to see both new active boaters joining our cruise events and former boaters getting reengaged with the Fleet. At the end of the year, although not a scheduled Cruising Fleet event, many of the Fleet were at the docks for New Year’s Eve to enjoy the docks, the offerings of our club, and all the events held downtown for First Night. It was like a homecoming because several boating groups that share membership with many of the Fleet were at the docks: the Dolphin Cruising Club, the Unsinkables, and the YOLOs. It was fun to mingle with the different groups, share our noshes, and ring in the New Year together. It just goes to show you, boating brings out the best ships, which are the friendships we make through boating.
Upcoming events for the Cruising Fleet to enjoy include: • Cruising Fleet Luncheon – Thursday, February 12, 2015. • February cruise to Pasadena Yacht & Country Club – February 20-22, 2015. February’s Cruising Fleet Luncheon is Thursday, February 12, 2015 at noon. We are happy to have a special appearance by Commodore Harvey Ford for our annual Commodore’s Address to the Fleet. We will also begin sign-up for our annual Commodore’s Cruise at that time. We previewed this year’s Commodore’s Cruise shirt at the January meeting and are taking orders now for those.
Please call our Sailing Secretary Phyllis to sign-up for our activities, cruises, and our monthly lunch or dinner meeting reservations at 727-892-6893 or email her at sailingsecretary@spyc.org. Looking forward to seeing you on the water… - Angela Kowalik, Fleet Captain
Looking ahead, to encourage more and different participation in our monthly meetings, we have scheduled Dinner Meetings (instead of a Luncheon) for March, June, and September. The calendar is updated and available on the yacht club website. As we have done in the past, sign-up for our cruises opens first at the Monthly Meeting and priority for those in attendance, and then later with the Sailing Secretary and on the yacht club website after that time.

High energy. Always ready. Enthusiastic. On point. Detail driven and the hardest working person in the room. This is how Maritza’s Manager, Chef Joseph Van Bemmel views Maritza’s approach to her work. “I have only worked with her for a short time but it was easy to see from the beginning that she is very special.” When someone is out sick, Maritza is always there to help, and when things get crazy, she is cool under pressure. She goes out of her way to assist in multiple areas of the Club and always has the member’s best interest in mind. I am so very lucky to have her as a team mate and appreciate her capabilities as a supervisor in the kitchen.
Congratulations Maritza!!
