COMMODORE’S LOG Chapter 5 – There once was a yachty from Gloucester, who wished to eat beef by the water, but when he got there, his brain didn’t care, so instead he consumed a fine lobster. … and, There once was a lady from Perth, who came to the Club to hear mirth, but when she got there, the jokes were too rare, so she dashed to the dock for a berth…and, There once was a man named Shawn, who managed the docks with his brawn, but when inviting the Optis, they all launched with dollies, and the fleet left without him at dawn. (Ford circa 10 minutes ago).

need to maintain a culture of positivity and helpful criticism of our team. Your blue ribbon Strategic Planning Committee met for 2 days at the end of January and is now doing its homework before we reconvene in mid-March. This exercise applies the Survey results and will continue to apply them. The data buried in these results is a valuable asset that I intend to squeeze for every last drop of operational and membership improvement. I (and the entire Strat Team) don’t want the next survey to reveal a frustration that the last one just sat in a box.

Sorry, now I am back. March is a glorious month, but February will be hard to beat. We had some cooler than normal weather, but that didn’t stop 340 young sailors from enjoying a spectacular weekend for the Valentine’s Regatta, nor the close to 1000 sailors for the NOOD Regatta, nor the 505 Class racers at PAG. Much thanks to the many volunteers and staff who made those events happen. At the landside terminal, we continued to host some great events like the Super Bowl party, the Bounty lecture, Wine Society and Trivia Night. In March, you can get ready for the annual invasion of the Thistle Fleet, the Lightning Fleet, the Low Country Boil and the Grand Prix. We must all appreciate at least one of these events, so please stop in to enjoy your Club and the waterfront.

On a related note, the September 2014 Financial Audit of our Club was completed in January by Mayer, Hoffman & McCann and the results were very positive and clean. Your Treasurer Joe Klingel and his Finance Committee carefully managed this process through multiple meetings with the auditors and staff as well as the Board of Directors, who voted to approve the audit at the January Board meeting. The mere fact that the audit was approved so early in the year speaks well of our staff and the much improved management and operational methods. A hard copy of the actual Audit summary can be obtained from our business office.

Regarding the Survey of our Club that you took last fall, the results have been received and a five page summary has been created. The summary is now posted on our website and hard copies are available from our business office. The full 200+/- page detail of the survey results is also available from our business office. It is gratifying to see that almost 700 members took the survey (roughly 1/3rd of our membership). Such a high percentage of response is rare in the industry and, regardless of the specific answers, I am very pleased to see such interest. On behalf of our Board, I thank you. I am not spoiling the story by saying that the number one item or desire among the respondents related to high quality food and beverage service. The number one item was not that the food and beverage service was substandard, rather that it was the most important item for to them. One could also say…”What about boating?” Well, that also received a lot of comment. So don’t despair. That said, we know we need to strive for greatness in all areas, but as we strive, we also

Finally, I am hopeful that all of you are engaged or will be engaged in the Pier selection process. As the Yacht Club, we are the most visible and possibly the single most affected organization on the waterfront. I did speak to the heirs of King Tut and they, apparently, are supporting any design that includes a pyramid, inverted or otherwise. So please participate and let’s reopen a Pier…any Pier. You can engage in the City’s Waterfront Plan process that will affect everything from mooring fields and transient dockage to Al Lang Field and our beautiful parks. See you in April.

SPYC Valentine’s Day Regatta A Success! Over the weekend of February 7-8, SPYC hosted its annual Valentines Day International Youth Regatta. 339 competitors from all corners of the USA, Canada and the Caribbean sailed either the Opti or the Laser in the Florida State Laser Championships. Conditions for the weekend were light and variable, and all three Race Committee teams worked extremely hard to provide great racing in tough conditions. On the Opti Gold Fleet Course 2 races were completed for the 190 competitors. Taking home the Jane Funsch Perpetual Trophy was Benton Amthor from the Fishing Bay Yacht Club in Virginia. SPYC’s top finisher was Ethan Danielson finishing in 35th place overall. He was followed by Callista Hopkins in 43rd, Heather Kerns in 72nd, Robert Hopkins in 77th, Bella Shakespeare in 81st, Cameron Delgado in 82nd, Pearson Payne in 85th, Sam Lindsay in 88th, Emma Shakespeare in 101st, Emily Allen in 109th, Anika Boicheff in 136th, Mikey Noble in 147th, Watt Icely in 153rd and Heidi Hicks in 160th . SPYC was also well represented on the 98-boat Silver Fleet Course. Dorothy Mendelblatt was our top finisher in 7th place overall and 3rd in the white fleet. Sidney Noble was close behind in 11th place and was followed by Analise Delgado in 16th and Madi Icely in 22nd. Also competing for SPYC in the Silver Fleet were Logan Rimel, Colin Lawther, Jack Carter, Alex Romero, Kate Danielson, Trevor Hicks, Trent Boicheff, Ava Shakespeare, Maxwell Reynolds, Zachary Jennings, Cecilia Allen, Lily Berget, Karrington Hansen and Taylor Brown.

SPYC was also the host to the 2015 Florida State Sailing Association Laser Championships as part of the Valentines Day Regatta. In the Laser Radial Division, SPYC’s Nic Baird finished a close 2nd overall. Nic was followed closely by Liam McCarthy in 6th place and Kyle Dochoda in 9th. Also competing in the Laser Radial division were Nevin Avila, Grant Boicheff, Hannah Steadman, Emily Wright, Josh Dochoda and Mo Bereday. In the Laser 4.7 division SPYC’s Blaire McCarthy finished in 2nd place overall and Daniel Dennison in 7th. It is no easy task to put on an event for 339 boats, spread out across 3 different racing areas and without the help of all our volunteers we wouldn’t be able to put on such a great regatta. We had 75 on the water Race Committee Volunteers and an additional 65 shore side volunteers helping with everything from parking, sailor check in, lunch distribution, ramp duty, breakfast setup and crowd control! On behalf of the SPYC Junior Sailing Team, we would like to thank all of you who took the time out of your weekend to lend a hand and make this event a huge success again in 2015! ing Shooters Society members enjoyed another month of fellowship shoots at various sporting clays venues around the Bay area. February was capped off with another of our quarterly gastronomical feasts in the Quarterdeck Room prepared by Executive Chef Joseph Van Bemmel. The five-course menu included American Bison Carpucio followed by Black Axis Venison & Barley Stew. Next we enjoyed “Wing Shooters Quail” provisioned on a recent quail hunt by WSS members. The succulent main course was Coconut Crusted Muscovy Duck with dark tart cherry and blackberry gastrique. Following a dessert of pumpkin spiced cheesecake brulee we retired to the patio to enjoy an after dinner cigar accompanied by a very special Cognac provided by PC Sandy Schoenberg.

Chef Joseph Van Bemmel explains the preparation of the gourmet game dinner he has prepared for the Wing Shooters Society as Carl Hall, RC Bob Birkenstock and PC Sandy Schoenberg look on.

We continue to grow the WSS and would like to welcome new members Stewart Ahman, Breck Amick, John Amick, Will Reed and John Worlein. Our membership is open to SPYC members and you can join this fun group by contacting Jack Cartier: jack@cartiercpas.com or phone him at (727) 822-8800 Chef Van Bemmel’s Cocoa Crusted Muscovy Duck with dark tart cherry and blackberry gastrique, prepared for the Wing Shooter’s February Gam Dinner

Thirty golfers were awed by the exceptional condition of Esplanade Golf Course at Lakewood Ranch. Not a blade of grass was missing, except after a few miss hits by a few players! They were quick to fill in the divots with the sand provided. Close to the pins were awarded to Isabel Schoenberg, Nancy Strite, Jim McGourin and Robert Weir. The winning team was Gene Strite, Eric McShane, Jerry Crawford, Jack Hardick: 2nd, Nancy Strite, Jack Howard, Joe Mansir, Steve Hamblin; 3rd, Rich Lander, Ed Wilson, Dick Funsch. A match of cards decided the 4th place team of Emmett Coe, Isabel Schoenberg, Rene Echevarria and Herb Anderson. The beer was flowing in the crowded, temporary lunchroom.

Because our Rules Chair, Nancy Strite, was absent for our monthly meeting, she prepared a Rules Quiz for Gene to present. He certainly made it a fun and lively event; but alas, the majority of answers given were incorrect!! Officer Chip Miles, who is an annual speaker for us, gave an informative lecture on cyber theft.

Broad Reachers The Broads Reachers have been busy this past month, not sailing, but cleaning and organizing our Pram garage. Thanks to Anne O’Dell and her “garage” team, we now have everything put away, cleaned, and labeled. The team demolished the old bathroom, had the walls repaired, painted, and added several shelving units to complete the project. On January 21st, the Broad Reachers hosted the FWSA General Meeting with 89 FWSA members present. Salty Sister, Jen French presented the program “Novice to Medalist.” Jen told us how she began sailing, her road to the Paralympics, and about her involvement with the Neurotech Network and how her neurotechnology implants allow her to stand and walk again.

George Kullman & Len Jurca on the Safety boat. We are looking forward to our Valentine’s Day Race and soon we’ll begin our Rainbow Regatta practice. Monday, February 9th, the Broad Reachers hosted their only FWSA interclub this year. We had four guest clubs with a total of nine sailors. The weather was not very cooperative with very little wind and a little bit of rain. We did complete two races, just finishing as the rain began to come down. Broad Reacher, Tove Kullman came in first place and Salty Sister, Nancy Strite placed third.

Cruising Fleet News by Angela Kowalik, Fleet Captain

Welcome Aboard!!! Wow! What great boating weather we have in Florida, even in the winter!!! You know, we’re all about the base, ‘bout the base, ‘bout the base, no trouble. And so it goes for our first cruise for 2015 on January 23-25 to our own home base port, the Saint Petersburg Yacht Club. Fourteen vessels participated including two SPYC Marina leaseholders: Port Directors Stephanie & Biff Judd on Barefootin’, along with: Angela & Brian Kowalik on Marquesa, Richard & Judi Phagan on Inertia, Camille Iurillo & Joe Petrella on Moondancer, Tim & Diane Connolly on Lady Di 3, Kevin & Debra Hopper on Island Hopper, Phil & Mary Letourneau on Silver Lining, Bob & Andrea Merriman on First Mate, Ray & Charlotte Noyes on Bitter Sweet, Nancy & John Dunn on Nansea j, Tom & Kathy Daniel on Sol Mates, Kent & Marcia Larson on Final One, Rod & Nina Glover on Thistle, Miron & Rosemary Kolodziejczak on Challenger Joining us by “Iron Dinghy” were: Barbara & Heber Weller, Ken & Corrine St. Jean, Ed & Isabel Hanna, Joe & Ginny Sadler, John & Elaine Guthrie Some boaters arrived a week early, some arrived a few days before the weekend, but by Friday all had arrived to enjoy 5 o’clock Docktails aboard

Sunday provided interested boaters the opportunity to have free Safety Inspections of their vessels by the Coast Guard Auxiliary. A Safety Inspection decal is received to be displayed beside the vessels registration decal if a boat is deemed safe. Ten boats were inspected and all received their Safety Inspection decals! It was a wonderful weekend and we are all so proud that we have such a beautiful Marina, Club and City to enjoy. Congratulations to Stephanie & Biff Judd for their first time as Port Directors, and thank you for stepping up and organizing such a successful kickoff for 2015! Also a huge thank you to Dockmasters, Adam Harnen and John Toberman for getting so many of us into the marina; Dining Room Manager, Steaven Harbin for getting us a great space to be seated all together; and the Letourneaus and Sadlers for their amazing hospitality.

Stephanie & Biff Judd: January Port Directors

Upcoming events for the Cruising Fleet to enjoy include: • Cruising Fleet Dinner – Thursday, March 12, 2015. • March cruise to Sarasota Yacht Club – March 20-22, 2015 • April cruise to Twin Dolphin Marina March’s Cruising Fleet Meeting is a Dinner meeting on Thursday, March 12, 2015 beginning at 5:30. Our guest speaker is our own Richard Phagan who will teach and entertain us about Knotical Nautical Knots. This is the last meeting to order Commodore’s Cruise Shirts. We will also begin signup for June’s cruise to Field Club. For an alternative to our monthly Luncheon Meetings, we will have Dinner Meetings in June and September instead. Watch Smooth Sailing for details. As we have done in the past, sign-up for our cruises opens first at the Monthly Meeting and priority for those in attendance, and then later with the Sailing Secretary and on the yacht club website after that time.

Dinner – Commodore’s Room

Dinner – Gratzzi’s

Phil and Mary Letourneau’s MV, Silver Linings. How many revelers can you get aboard, you ask? We nearly lost count but there was plenty of room and a pile of shoes! Later we made our way to the Commodore’s Room for dinner, all 36 of us present and accounted for, taking up half the joint just for our group. During dinner, we each received discount coupons for museums and restaurants to use around town over the weekend or at our leisure. A few toasts (okay, a lot of toasts) were offered throughout the evening because we were all just happy to be together and boating again. On Saturday, the group was free to enjoy what downtown had to offer. We enjoyed the Saturday Morning Market, walking the dogs, a visit to the Sundial, and a movie, and shopping, just to name a few. The cocktail hour Saturday was dubbed “Contails” or “Condotails” (depending on who you ask), hosted by Joe and Ginny Sadler at their 24th Floor condominium at Signature Place. After enjoying hors d’oeuvres, including the roaring shark, and the totally magnificent view, we completed the evening with dinner for twenty-four at Gratzzi’s Italian Grill.

Please call our Sailing Secretary Phyllis to sign-up for our activities, cruises, and for monthly lunch or dinner meeting reservations at 727-892-6893 or email her at sailingsecretary@spyc.org. Looking forward to seeing you on the water… - Angela Kowalik, Fleet Captain

MASTER DRIVER TEAM RACING REGATTA January 17-18, 2015 by: Janet Walker

At our last monthly meeting we had two speakers, our own Tom Brew who enlightened us about the city’s future plans for Albert Whitted Airport and the need to keep focused on preserving our flying presence there. Tom, over the years, from behind the scenes has always been vigilantly helping us keep our flying machines in Saint Petersburg. Thank you Tom. Our guest speaker Bill Buston a vice president of the Florida Aviation Historical Society and director of the Saint Petersburg Museum of History, (one short block north of SPYC) presented a proposal to join with them at various events during this year. Call Bill to find out more about these fine aviation events, or if you wish to join or participate as a volunteer. At the meeting Bill talked about the first commercial flight which Bill Buston Expounding About took place from Saint the First Flight Engine Petersburg to Tampa on January 1, 1914 and was duplicated 100 years later right here in Tampa Bay. Bill will continue his dialogue at our next monthly meeting, which is planned to be at the museum. It promises to be a special night when he will lower the Benoit from high above to the floor, allowing club members a closer look and examination. It will be a night for pictures so mark your calendar for Sunday March 8th at 6pm. For more event details call Bill at 727.323.2079 or myself at 727.822. 7999. Also, at the meeting we welcomed new member Darcy Mullins. This year the Flying Club will be exciting and we expect a new direction to make it more informative and enjoyable. We have made arrangements with St. Pete Air at Albert Whitted Airport which will entitle you to club discounts where you can take lessons, bi-annuals or rent a variety of planes at reduced rates....

SPYC was proud to host the 8th annual Master Driver Team Racing Regatta, with five teams representing the yacht clubs from Newport Harbor, St. Francis, Texas Corinthian, Annapolis and St. Petersburg. Each team consisted of two boats racing against the two boats from an opposing club, with the team whose boat finished last losing the race. The action was quick and fierce as each team battled to keep their teammate out of last place, with each race lasting under 12 minutes. The weather was perfect all weekend, and five round-robins were completed for a total of 50 races, quite a feat and testament to the skill of the race committee. Once again, the crew from Newport Harbor Yacht Club from California finished first, losing only one of their 20 races to second place Texas Corinthian Yacht Club. St. Petersburg Yacht Club did a valiant job trying to secure 3rd place but were just barely beaten out by St. Francis Yacht Club. The victorious NHYC sailors were Bill Menninger, John Fuller, Justin Law, Tim Hogan, Chuck Fonda, and Jamie Malm. Sailing for SPYC were Rich Doyle, Steve Lang, Chuck Dawson, Mike Funsch, Tom Nelson, and Alec Funsch. All scores are on the website www.spyc.org. No regatta can take place without an excellent race committee. Todd Fedyszyn was PRO, with assistance from Bill McCarthy, Jerry Harris, Tommy Wheatley, Loren Hoffman, Bill Ballard, Tom Pierce, George and Beth Pennington, Kathy Ahern and 5 umpires: Eric Johnson (Chief Umpire, or CHUMP!), plus Phil Pape, Henry Moore, Susan Wallace, and Katie Gluskin. Janet Walker served as Chairperson for the event. Thanks to SPSC and SPYC for all their assistance. SPYC welcomes all sailors that wish to participate in team racing. In Master-Driver Regattas, the skipper must be over 45 years old. Please contact Rich Doyle or Mike Funsch. The next event in April, 2015 will be the Grandmaster Driver Team Regatta with 3 boats against 3 boats, in which the skipper must be over 55 years old.

Amateur Radio Club by Dick Mordaunt, AB1NI

Happy Birthday!

O

ur club members talk on “Nets” often. In case you are wondering, a net is a social gathering of people on the air waves with a common interest. In our case the interest is Yacht Clubs, cruising, boats, socializing, and operating radios. Some of us are good technically and help others with communication gear, but a lot of what we talk about is boating, cruising adventures and people we meet on our nets. Last week I was talking on the Waterway Net (HF on 7.268 MHz at 7:45am every morning) and met John from Bradenton YC. Just by chance, he was on his boat about 200 feet from me at BYC! We talked for a while then met in person on the docks. HF radio has introduced me to many people with a common interest I would not have met otherwise. Other good nets for boaters is the Maritime Net on 14.3 MHz, the Caribbean Net and SPYC’s very own Net every Monday at 5:30pm. In our March meeting we will use the SSB HF gear in Amateur Radio Club (ARC) radio room at SPYC main where we will talk to sailors and others on HF radio. We will be preparing to talk to sailors on the Regata del Sol al Sol. Come and join us and learn what SSB HF radio is all about. SPYC ARC socializes on-the-air every Monday on our VHF Net at 17:30 on 147.030 MHz where people join us locally or from around the world on Echolink. Let’s all stay in contact from wherever we are in the world and have fun with Amateur Radio. 73s https://sites.google.com/site/spycamateurradioclub/

Salty Sisters

March 2015

By Kathy Ahern

Holidays are over and the regatta season is in full swing for both the club and the Salty Sisters. CHARM RACING SERIES: The Maggie Mug Trophy Series in the Ideal 18’s is underway. The new Pram charm series is running simultaneously with the Golden Girls Trophy Series. In the Golden Girl Series, a Salty must be a minimum of 60 years of age. The winner of this series may be asked to represent the Salty Sisters in the Rainbow Regatta Masters Division. Sonar Series Winners: In January, the Sonar Series was completed. The winners were Janet Walker 1st place, Trisha Birkenstock 2nd place, and Rosemary Sherman 3rd place. EDUCATION: When the Salty Sisters are not sailing, they have educational classes about sailing. Our Race Committee Trainer, Selga Sakss, and her committee provide us with an excellent educational program. The 44-member audience at the February class learned about radios from Connie Beckman and Gloria Davis informed them about Race Committee procedures.

EMPLOYEE OF YEAR 2014 Tom Rockhill

We are very happy to announce the winner of the “2014 Employee of the Year” is Lawrence “Tom” Rockhill. Tom has been an integral part of the Yacht Club’s Sailing Center since June of 2010 and has been voted employee of the month on three occasions. Tom grew up in Watertown, Connecticut before moving to St. Petersburg where he became a commercial fisherman. His time as a fisherman and his background in construction gave him a unique set of skills to handle the maintenance of the Sailing Center and the Club’s fleet of 90+ vessels. Tom’s work ethic and dedication to his craft were put on display recently when he completed a 16-month Marine Service program at P-Tec in only 13 months, while maintaining his full time position at the Club. He is a great asset to the Club and is always willing to lend a hand wherever he is needed. Please take a few moments to congratulate Tom on another great year!

EMPLOYEE OF MONTH

WE CARE

Our staff receives certification training in regard to safe and responsible practices in serving alcoholic beverages. Our goal is to always provide professional, friendly service to our members while promoting a comfortable and safe atmosphere for all. On rare occasions, for the safety and well being of members, there may be a need to discontinue serving alcoholic beverages. Please appreciate that this is done for the protection of our members and the Club. We thank you for your cooperation. Please drink responsibility.

2013/2014 AUDIT IS COMPLETE If you would like to review the 2013/14 Audit Report, please contact Colleen Finney, CFO, at 823-1061 to make an appointment to do so. Please understand that the Financial Statements and year end audits may not be removed from the Chief Financial Officer’s office.

Alysia Wenckoski Heritage Lounge Bartender Congratulations to Alysia Wenckoski, Heritage Lounge Bartender, for being selected as February’s Employee of the month. What better way to commemorate this achievement than to honor her in the month of her two year anniversary of employment with the St. Petersburg Yacht Club. Alysia is valued and respected among her peers and members and is well deserving of this accolade. Please be sure to congratulate her for a job well done! Thank you Alysia for the outstanding service you provide to our members and for being an important part of the team.
