SAILING CAPITAL OF THE SOUTH

COMMODORE’S LOG Chapter 7 – After six months of smooth sailing and vastly improved performance at the Club, I have to report to you that we experienced another month of smooth sailing and improved performance. Twice in the last 4 months (December and March) we made a profit in combined food and beverage for the month. Those months are usually good for us, but the degree of “good” is dramatically higher. And for the year, we are way ahead of last year at this time. Of course it is important for us to do well in the winter months to offset slower business in the summer and thankfully the “slower” months aren’t as slow as they used to be. For those of you who need some drama in their lives, we are not the place. From a Club operational standpoint, we are steadily and quietly moving up through the fleet. And all of this without any minimum food or beverage charges as are common at other clubs. Thank you to Marc Reydams and his entire staff. As we march toward maximum efficiency and member satisfaction, our challenge as members will be to continue to appreciate the improvement without seeking new levels of issues. We can always improve, but with our overall heightened confidence in management, our main job as members will be to simply relax and enjoy our Club. We do need to keep Vanessa McCambridge, the PAG Manager, in our thoughts as she recovers from a vehicle accident. We all look forward to her return to her position. I understand there is a microphone near her so that she can stay in tune. In April, a new landscape company was hired and for those of us who like to weed and edge and mulch, we are out of luck…that’s all been done. The Main Club looks much better and Snell Isle is about to get its share of TLC. The GM, at the behest of his first mate, Pierre Dumaine, has been chasing an issue regarding our trash compactor. In March, we changed to a recycling system that completely eliminates that huge odiferous bin and related machinery on the south end of our building, reducing costs by ~$12,000 per year and helps save the planet. The event was cleverly marked by a white tablecloth meal for 5 in the old bin area hosted by Pierre to make good on his prediction regarding the cleanliness of the area. I saw it myself. Congratulations to Pierre…bon appétit!

and Beth Pennington for their leadership. We hosted the Presidente Municipal and other dignitaries from Isla Mujeres at our Club and all enjoyed another fun week of sailing and landside events in Isla. Kathleen and I had a great time and we recommend the trip to everyone (we flew, but the boat ride is fun as well). Try to join our Fleet somewhere on the Commodores’ Cruise May 2-16 (check our website or ask Angela Kowalik), help with the Allison Jolly Regatta May 9 and be sure to set your schedules to attend the Yachting Recognition Awards program on Tuesday, May 19. No disrespect intended to the month of June, but one of my favorite events every year is the Changing of the Flags on The Fourth of July. Start thinking about that now if you are going to be in town. Great food, a little ceremony and singing (or humming or a stealthy toe tap, as the case may be...govern yourself and your spouse accordingly). June will be honored next month. I would suggest that every one of you promise me that you will go upstairs and have a beverage and a snack at our newly upgraded Tiki Bar by the pool (temporary naming rights to the Tiki Bar are available for a substantial fee. If your name is “Tiki,” you don’t get any credit). Thanks to Rear Commodore Bob Birkenstock (and Vice Commodore Richard Winning before him), the House and Grounds committee, as well as Lee Maidenberg and many others who made that happen. Watch for the nice new metal gates to be erected for the outside stairs and the removal of those functional, but ugly PVC gates... hurrah. I was promised that the palm frond Tiki roof would be trimmed up to a 6’4” height…Brian Burns and I will be checking. Lastly, please get checked out in a Sonar and try the Twilight sailing…it is a beautiful time of year to be on the water in the evenings. Or try out the Ideal 18’s…it is your Club. Use it. See you at the next mark.

Now, as you receive this, our 47th Regata del Sol al Sol will have just wrapped up. Thanks again to Janet Walker and George

The Mission of St. Petersburg Yacht Club is to encourage and support yachting, and provide a comfortable social environment for our members and guests, while preserving and enhancing the Club’s traditions and prestige. 2

Welcome Photos Required on Membership Accounts Please Respond As Soon As Possible

As announced one year ago, Photos are required on all membership accounts within the Club’s internal accounting system. Photos allow for improved security of membership accounts in addition to allowing the staff to more accurately post charges to member accounts in the restaurants and lounge. (example: duplicate last names)

If you have not yet done so, we kindly ask that you submit your photo as soon as possible. Members and their Spouses may stop by the Front Desk to have their photos taken together. Members also have the option of e-mailing photos as an attachment in jpeg file format, no larger than 200kb, to: spycfrontdesk@tampabay.rr.com (please include your membership number in the email) (Please do not send hard copy photos in the mail) Unfortunately, there were a few photos that were inadvertently deleted during the upgrade of our system in January. In the event that you had your photo taken, and a staff member communicates that it is not appearing on your member account, we kindly ask that you please stop by the Front Desk to have your photo retaken. We apologize for the inconvenience and appreciate your understanding of the glitch. Due to the aforementioned glitch, the deadline to have your photo on your account has been extended to August 1st, 2015. If your photo has not been added by this date, a penalty of $100 will be applied to your account which will be fully refundable upon providing your photo.

REMINDER:

SPYC HAS TRANSITIONED TO PAPERLESS BILLING EFFECTIVE APRIL 1ST. BE SURE TO CHECK YOUR EMAILS FOR YOUR STATEMENTS THE FIRST WEEK OF EVERY MONTH.

48-HOUR

CANCELLATION POLICY FOR ALL CLUB EVENTS What is the 48-hour cancellation policy? Once you have made a reservation for a club event, we do ask that, in the event you need to cancel or reduce your reservation amount, that it be done at least 48 hours before the event.

Why do we ask? Preparation for food is being done, seating is being place and both require staffing. Coordination of events is all based on the reservation numbers that you provide.

How Strict is this policy? Holiday and special events such as Easter, Grand Prix, and Commodore’s Ball are generally sell-out events. FULL reservation amounts are charged because we sell-out, disappointing fellow members who would have liked to have attended, and also leaves the club unable to recoup those empty seats. Last minute reservation changes are not accepted and full reservation amounts will be applied for any reductions to your party within 48 hours of an event.

Cruising Fleet News

IN T HE

Welcome Aboard!!! …

They say…less is more, more or less…so they say. And I say, “they” must not own a boat!!! Hey Captain, where in the world is The Fleet?? Not in San Diego, that’s for sure. By the time you are reading this, the Cruising Fleet is off on their annual Commodore’s Cruise…Stay tuned!!! Meanwhile…. During our March Cruising Fleet Meeting, Richard Phagan talked to us about all things knotical and how to keep those lines from being one big tangled mess. We learned from the avid sailor that some nautical terms vary depending on whether you are on land or on water…huh? If you missed the great tips and advice, or the refresher on “Cat’s Cradle,” let me offer you a layman’s recap: if you can’t tie a knot, tie a lot!

Square Knot

2015 Commodore Cruise Ports

Our March 20-24 cruise was to Sarasota Yacht Club (SYC). Thanks to a “yacht club swap”, we were able to fill up the place with 12 boats while SYC invaded SPYC the same weekend (maybe you saw some of their crew around the club?). Our SYC trip was coordinated by Port Directors Barbara & Heber Weller on Clifton. Joining them by vessel were: Angela & Brian Kowalik on Marquesa, Kevin & Debbie Hopper on Island Hopper, Ed & Isabel Hanna on Isabella, Rod & Nina Glover on Thistle, Kent & Marcia Larson on Final One, Bob & Andrea Merriman on First Mates, Ray & Charlotte Noyes on Bitter Sweet, Roy & Jeannie Chapman on Blue Eyes, John & Nancy Dunn on Nansea j, Elwyn & Carol Segrest on Fish E. Business, and Linda & Jack Albrecht on Patient Wader. On Friday, we enjoyed the SYC club’s hospitality hour, then adjourned to dine in the club. Afterwards, some donned their dancing shoes and twirled in the Porthole. Saturday was the usual leisurely activities and dips in the pool, followed by docktails outside the club, where the guys and gals divided to “talk” and share stories and “someone” photo-bombed the wedding snaps being taken nearby. A short walk to St. Armands Circle for dinner under the stars in Shore Diner canopy room topped off the weekend. It was hard to leave those complimentary weekend scones and coffee that we so adore each morning at SYC! Thank you all for coming, and thanks to Barbara & Heber for yet another awesome cruise to Sarasota Yacht Club. There is no Cruising Fleet Meeting in May (we’re outta here!), but Monthly Meeting will resume in June with a Dinner Meeting. Watch Smooth Sailing for details. Upcoming events for the Cruising Fleet to enjoy include: • Cruising Fleet Dinner Meeting – Thursday, June 11, 2015 • June cruise to Field Club – June 19-21 & July cruise to SPYC Downtown – July 3-5 • SAVE THE DATE!!! – July 11, all ye SPYC members!!! More to come….you read it here first!

Monthly Informative & Entertaining Programs/with Lunch Helene Hardick, President, May 2015

Power Boat Competition turns it up!

April 20th Meeting: A fun time was had by all who attended the Kentucky Derby Party and Installation of Officers for 201516. A delicious luncheon was served followed by Derby Music with Racing Horses on the track. Then came the Hat Contest, for the Prettiest, Most Unusual and Most Creative Hats. Ladies marched through the club to the tune of “My Old Kentucky Home“ Winners were selected by the staff.

Two boats and 10 people participating in the Predicted Log Training and Demonstration on Saturday, March 14, 2015, had steady winds and changing currents and a beautiful day! Dave and Mary Bertauski on Clara Ann with Jack Courtney aboard were tutored by Maurice McGough for a first place win! Way to go Dave and Mary! Coming in a respectable second were Heber and Barbara Weller on Clifton with Vicki and Walt Posner aboard, tutored by Robert VanLandingham.

Officers for 2015-16 are: President Eva Hefner Vice President Mary Howe Programs Angela Kowalik Treasurer Maryette Miller Secretary Nancy Dunn Membership Sally Roth Sunshine Lady – Roz Beckoff –rozb@tampabay.rr.com May 18th Meeting Lunch at Pass a Grille followed by Mah Jongg, no Program. Membership Information-Sally Roth TouhySally@aol.com Mah Jongg Mondays 1PM Barbara Casey barbarahap@aol.com

Robert and Maurice set a course that required us to take marks to port while running out to the ship channel and then back to the club. The course took about an hour to run and gave us lots of experience in holding a steady course coming up to the mark. Got to look behind at the last mark then forward to the next several times during each leg; not just point at the next mark! We also learned how to handle the situation when there is an approaching boat in a crossing position, how to use ranges to keep on line for the mark and the sequences for rounding the mark. Afterwards we had refreshments, learned the results of our efforts and planned our next training and demonstration.

I enjoyed being your President this year, we’ve had some nice programs, MJ Tournament and fun times. Meeting and making new friends, that is what the Ladies Beach Club is all about. The Members of the Board were always helpful, and I know next year will be even better with Eva as your President and a great Board. Have a Healthy and Happy Summer 2015. See you in September.

With the new relaxed rules, this was a lot of fun! We are doing a second training and demonstration on Saturday, April 25, 2015 with a skipper’s meeting at 1 P.M. by the dockmaster’s office. In June, we plan a longer course on Saturday, June 6, 2015, from the Club to Hula Bay for lunch followed by refreshments upon our return. I really hope you can join us! You can use your boat (sail or power) as long as your boat has tachometer, or we will get you on boat.

Hugs, Helene

Amateur Radio Club by Dick Mordaunt, AB1NI Recently we had a meeting of our Club’s 2015 Net Control Operators at PAG at the time of our Monday net. Left to right are Bob Potter, Margie Lewis, Chris Lewis, Dick Mordaunt and Frank Mann. Absent from the photo is Jack Satterfield. We talk weekly on the radio between our monthly meetings. What is nice about the Amateur Radio Net is we don’t have to travel to a meeting and don’t have to interrupt our personal schedules. This day for example, Jack checked in from a 1/4 mile away, Joel checked in from south of the Skyway bridge and Dave checked in from Tampa, all checked in to socialize by radio. Also 3 others actually came by car! At the meeting we talked about volunteering with our radios to help the Regata del Sol al Sol and the possibility of trying our radios in private airplanes. We also talked about our radios in past cruising adventures, planned cruises and radio maintenance. SPYC ARC meets face to face every third Tuesday at 6pm. But, we start gathering during happy hour before the meeting. We also socialize on-the-air every Monday on our VHF Net at 17:30 on 147.030 MHz where people join us locally or from around the world on Echolink. Let’s all stay in contact from wherever we are in the world and have fun with Amateur Radio. ‘73s. https://sites.google.com/site/spycamateurradioclub/

Lucas Race Start Line On Saturday, March 21st, the Broad Reachers hosted the annual Nancy Lucas Regatta. Even though the currents and winds worked against us, we were able to complete the five required races. Spencer Lucas, Nancy Lucas’ son, was on hand to present the winners with great trophies. Winners were 1st place - Barbára Arnold, 2nd place - Carol Hansen, and 3rd place - Dee Gill. Of course we want to thank the Race Committee and spectators for being there and cheering us on. The Broads sent two sailors to the last FWSA Interclub race on March 24th, downtown at the Sailing Center. Barbara Watson and Barbára Arnold, sailing as Broad Reachers, placed 1st and 3rd respectively. Way to end the FWSA season!! On April 2nd, a committee of Broad Reachers spent the morning serving breakfast and walking service dogs for the Wounded Warrior Sailing Program. The girls delivered homemade muffins & breakfast casseroles, bagels, fruit, eggs, etc. for the sailors on their last day of training and competition. Kudos to Joanne Simmons, Connie Smith, Mary Jane Peabody, Jeanette Erb, Barbara Watson, Barbára Arnold, Tricia Billings, Anne Odell, Gretchen Wolfe, Marilyn Wall, Ginny Daniels and Carol Hansen for volunteering to help serve our Wounded Warriors.

Rainbow Regatta season is upon us, but unfortunately, due to travelling, illnesses, surgeries and injuries, the Broad Reachers will not have a team this year. Next year, look out, we’ll be ready with a whole year of practice! In the upcoming months, we will be competing in the Nona Bolster Race, Friendship Race, and a picnic trip to Shell Island. The Broad Reachers are actively searching for Saturday sailors who would like to come out and learn how to sail a Pram. We have lots of fun and would love to have you join us. The Thistle class arrived to start off the busy month of March with the 60th anniversary of their Midwinters East Regatta at the St Paul & Carole Petersburg Yacht Club. In time honored tradition 132 happy sailors basked in the warmth and sunshine at the Sailing Center after escaping less pleasant parts of the country. March 1 came in like a gentle lamb for the first day of competition and conditions never allowed for fair racing. Fortunately the westerly appeared in time to get two races in on Day 2 and a late start and stellar southerly provided an excellent afternoon to complete four races on Wednesday. Nobody complained about a postponed start time the next day after a jumping party on the Tiki deck and two more races were sailed. On Friday the forecast lion of March arrived too late for the Thistlers leaving the fleet drifting until the noon abandonment, but on a positive note nobody left with a broken boat. The Miami Sunshine Perpetual Trophy awarded to the top finishers went to Mike Ingham of Rochester, NY sailing with Sarah Paisly and Dan Fien after a week of consistent finishes in the top 5. Paul Abdullah from Jacksonville was never able to overcome a disappointing first day with no throw-outs allowed and finished second, also winning the Sunshine Perpetual Trophy awarded to the top placing boat from Florida. Over half the fleet was skippered by a 50 year or older sailor and the Ol’ Thistlin’ Tom Perpetual Trophy also went to Mike Ingham who celebrated a significant birthday since last year’s event. Tom Hubbell, US Sailing President, once again conducted his novice clinic and had several nice awards for his star participants. However, the highlight of the evening was the special tribute to

Prepare to get out of your slips for a fun night. There is one race each evening. Count-down begins at 6:25 PM, somewhere around the Pier. Many types of boats come out and sail the course. We have had Moths, 470s, A-Cat, kites and kayaks, just to mention a few. Official competitor classes are Spinnaker, Non-Spinnaker and Cruising. We also provide additional scoring for one-designs if at least five boats compete. Club members may race in our Sonars. Simply call the Sailing Center before Friday and reserve a boat. (There is a unique award for the winning Sonar team at the end of the season.) The Notice of Race (NOR) and the Sailing Instructions (SIs) are on our website. “ FEEDBACK FROM THE

FOREDECK ”

REGATTA: Please share with all the GREAT team at SPYC and the sailing center. A job well done. About 250 Lightning sailors and family here for four days. Sixty seven boats! Sailors from 6 countries. Qualifier for the Pan American Games. It was an important regatta. I got caught up in a protest at the sailing center on Tuesday and could not finish setting up for the award dinner. I rushed to the club to finish only 10 minutes until guests were at arrive - wow, the whole staff had gone above and beyond, and the job was already completed. What a wonderful job everyone did.

GRAND PRIX: The garage party event today far surpassed our expectations. It was incredibly well organized and the food was better than first class, including enough vegetarian options for Loie and the best BBQ I have had in Florida! Please pass on to everyone what a great job they did.

Recycling Program

AT SPYC

Director of Food and Beverage, Pierre Dumaine, recently took the reins on implementing a recycling program for SPYC! The program makes the club more environmentally friendly, reduces trash load and will save the Club roughly $12,000 per year. THANK YOU PIERRE!

Chef Joseph – We’re not Irish but my wife and I, along with Van & Carol Barnes, were pleasantly surprised with today’s St. Patrick’s Day lunch. Not because it was free but because it was superior to any other St. Patrick’s Day lunch in recent history….especially considering the masses that were served. The bread was excellent and we even ordered more of it. The corned beef was thick, lean and tender as it could be. The potatoes and carrots were cooked just right. The cabbage was perfect and not mushy. Plus, the sauce was some of the best. Thanks for improving the club’s dining experience. You are certainly living up to your reputation and we look forward to having you at the SPYC as executive chef for years to come. Best regards, Bill & Eva Hefner Van & Carol Barnes

Recent Wedding: Shannon, I want the thank you again for helping make our wedding reception absolutely perfect. Your staff is so skilled, thoughtful, and polite, and each one checked in with us to be sure we were content -- and of course we were! How thoughtful of you and your chef to provide Robert with lobster along with his cheeseburger! Such a surprise and a treat! Our guests and ourselves had a wonderful time, thanks to the detail and attention of you and your staff. Warm regards, Jen Mossman The Staff enjoy an afternoon lunch where the trash compactor used to be. Once an unsightly area, the recycling program has eliminated much of the mess that waste produces.
