SAILING CAPITAL OF THE SOUTH

COMMODORE’S LOG Chapter 06 Spring is sprung and hopefully not your spring lines! The 48th Annual Regata del Sol al Sol is almost upon us. This years start will commence on April 22nd, culminating on the lovely Isla de Mujeres in Mexico. This has been a long tradition with your club and our friends in Mexico. It’s been a warm friendship full of fun. The fleet sailing around the island with the local children, the parties and the annual basketball game in the square. The present Mayor Agapito Magana Sanchez of the Island was one of those kids, and recently visited our Club, and city Mayor Rick Kriseman to further our friendship to create a Sister City with St. Petersburg. In attendance with the Mayor was the Consul Titular Juan Sabines Guerrero, the Consul of Mexico from Orlando along with many dignitaries; all coordinated by Irma Bridgeford. Our Mayor Rick Kriseman is hoping to attend the festivities this year and I hope he is on his game (basketball), as I hear they are very good.

YC, St. Charles YC and the Field Club. While travel is usually by boat some members travel by iron dingy (car) and make a weekend of it. This is another annual event put together by our Fleet Captain - Angela Kowalik. On another note…get those rods and reels out and check your tackle as our new Fishing Club has scheduled their first Inshore Fishing Tournament for April 16th at Pass-a-Grille. This should make for a fun day! They will be targeting Snook, Redfish and Trout. Contact Rich Andretta at (813) 503-6761 for more details. The Offshore Safety at Sea Seminar will take place on April 16th-17th. This is a US Sailing Sanctioned - ISAF certificate hosted by SPYC for both Sail and Power Boaters. Two day participation is required for ISAF Certification and the Offshore Survival Certificate is valid for 5 years. Space is limited so Contact Shawn Macking at the Sailing Center (727) 822-3113 or Kathy Ahern at (727) 521-2607. Have Fun and Safe Boating!

So make your accommodations and let the Island folk treat you to their special hospitality. This should make for a really fun week in Isla Mujeres! Along with the Regata del Sol al Sol at the end of April, the beginning of the month will host the Crown Car at Pass-aGrille (April 2nd) followed by the 2016 Suncoast Race Week (April 8th – 10th) and the Allison Jolly (April 30th – May 1st ).

Richard Winning Commodore

The annual Commodores Cruise will kick off at SPYC on April 29th, traveling to some fabulous get-a-ways such as: Longboat Key Moorings, Boca Grande Marina, Pink Shell, Naples S &

The Mission of St. Petersburg Yacht Club is to encourage and support yachting, and provide a comfortable social environment for our members and guests, while preserving and enhancing the Club’s traditions and prestige.

Junior Activities

The SPYC Junior Sailing Team was well represented over the weekend of February 12th-14th, with two full boats of juniors competing in the Sailing World NOOD Regatta hosted by SPYC. Blaire McCarthy skippered the Far East 28R in the PHRF division 1 with Nevin Avila, Grant Boicheff and Sam Tobio as crew. The team finished in 9th overall and was once again competitive with many of the adult crews on the race course. Ethan Danielson skippered the Frers 30 SORC in the Saturday Rally Race. Crewing on SORC with Ethan were Heidi Hicks, Anika Boicheff, Colin Lawther and Michael Noble.

The following weekend, SPYC sent 4 sailors to the Laser Midwinters East Championships hosted by the Clearwater Yacht Club. The event was held over 4 days in the Gulf of Mexico and had over 180 competitors from the USA, Canada and the Caribbean. Our top performer was Blaire McCarthy taking home first overall in the Laser 4.7 division. Blaire was followed by Cameron Delgado in 9th place in the 4.7 fleet. In the Laser Radial fleet, Emily Wright showed that she can sail at the top of the fleet in many races, finishing in 37th overall. Grant Boicheff just narrowly missed out on qualifying for the Gold Fleet and finished in 15th in the Silver Fleet.

Congratulations Junior Sailors!! 4

The regatta was held on Tampa Bay with variable winds. The Spinnaker (long course) and Cruiser Classes (short course) were able to finish before the wind died. Marc Reydams, SPYC General Manager, received the Deed of Gift and special trophy for the SPYC Invitational Pusser’s Rum Cup/Ted Irwin Memorial Regatta. Michelle Irwin Paine donated the trophy, which Ted Irwin won, and is a trophy from the original regatta under the auspices of the Florida Ocean Racing Association; held out from what is now the SPYC Beach Club. The names of the overall winners in each class will be engraved on the trophy from this day forward, and it will be placed on display at the St. Petersburg Yacht Club. The winners from SPYC are “Warrior”, Grant Dumas, 2nd Place Spinnaker A. “XTC”, Tom Glew, 2nd Place Cruiser. “Mi Sueño”, 3rd Place Cruiser. We also give thanks to George Cannon for his many years of support for this and many other events. On March 2nd-4th the SPYC hosted the Thistles for their annual Midwinter event. Although this was an abbreviated event due to the change in dates of the Grand Prix, it was highly successful. PRO Todd Fedyszyn with his able Race Committee, had 7 races in sometimes very shifty conditions. There have been plenty of years where we haven’t had 7 races in 5 days! Sailors were very happy with the wind and sun. The event was won by Mike Ingham from Rochester, NY, Paul Abdullah from Jacksonville, FL, in second and Craig Koschalk from Toledo, OH in third. This event was co-chaired by Susan Wallace and Karen Park. We’d also like to thank the Yacht Club for the fine efforts put forth to make this evet successful; as well as a Thank You to the following member volunteers; Gloria Davis whose boat was also used as the signal boat, Selga Sakss, Gina and Tom Pierce, Trisha Birkenstock, Bjorn Hooper, Tom Wheatley, Gene Collins, Gene McCarthy, Bob and Carol Johnson, George and Beth Pennington, Kathy Ahern, Barb Shaffer, Jennifer Parramore, Karen Park, Norm and Susan Huff.

Cruising Fleet News

IN T HE

Hellooooo!!!

The Fleet was in the House in February with beautiful weather greeting forty-four cruise fleet members for our trip to the downtown docks; organized by our February Port Directors, Tim and Dianne Connolly. Following docktails at the club’s Tiki Bar on Friday evening, we moved into the 1909 Room for a great meal. Steaven and Colleen were very resourceful accommodating so many members and the staff did a great job serving all in one seating. We really enjoy our club! Saturday morning brought more great weather. Members enjoyed the downtown market and Spring Fine Arts Festival in nearby North Straub Park. Tim Connolly gave a presentation on ActiveCaptain (the Interactive Cruising Guidebook) and associated mobile apps that afternoon. As usual, there was a lively Mah Jongg session. We began the evening by gathering on the docks for docktails, before splitting the large group to venture down Beach Drive to separate dinner reservations between Bella Brava and 400 Beach. No one goes hungry! Joining by vessel from afar were fellow cruisers: Brian & Angela Kowalik on Marquesa Tim & Dianne Connolly on Lady Di 3 Ed & Isabel Hanna on Isabella Kevin & Debbie Hopper on Island Hopper Bob & Andrea Merriman on JustUsII Ray & Charlotte Noyes on Bitter Sweet Richard & Judi Phagan on Phantasy Roy & Jeannie Chapman on Blue Eyes Mike & Lynn Lovchuk on Amore Charles Phil & Mary Letourneau on Silver Lining Elwyn & Carol Segrest on Fish E Business Kent & Marcia Larson on Final One Ken & Corrine St. Jean on Phantom Barbara & Heber Weller on Clifton And also lease holders from not so far: Les & Nancy Bauer on Bella Vita Paul & Marlene Daverede on Ditto Ron & Nina Glover on Thistle Biff & Stephanie Judd on BareFootin’ Tom & JoAnn Chamberlain on Five O’clock Now John & Linda Albrecht on Patient Wader Joining by Iron Dinghy were leaseholders Ken & Andrea Beil not on Hatta Dream (there’s a story there), and Chris & Sally Plonsky. Special thanks to Dockmaster Adam for fitting this large group into the marina.

Upcoming Events for the Cruising Fleet to enjoy: • Cruising Fleet Luncheon Meeting – Thursday, April 14 at noon • Cruise to Little Harbor – April 15-17 • Commodore’s Cruise – May 1-15, with our Kickoff on 4/29 The next meeting/luncheon will feature a preview of the itineraries for our annual May Commodore’s Cruise (CC) presented by each of the CC Port Directors who will describe the activities, festivities, and other fun happenings for each port of call. For those that ordered Commodore’s Cruise Shirts, this is the time to pick them up! Even if you aren’t going on this cruise, you should come hear what you’re missing! We will also begin sign-up for July’s cruise to SPYC at this time. Looking forward to seeing you on the water… - Angela Kowalik, Fleet Captain

Having fun at the club Tiki bar.

SPYC Riders Club Life gets busy. Reduce your stress, enjoy this gorgeous Florida weather, come ride with us! We meet at the Club every third Tuesday each month at 6:15 PM. Contact any member of the SPYC Riders Club for more information regarding our meetings and make sure to bring a friend! Unfortunately, the ride to Dade City for the Classic Car Show on February 6th was rained out. Wayne Bond stepped in and did some investigating and found several other Classic Car Show venues for us to consider. Although Wayne has not attended any of these, I’m confident they are worth cruising to: April 1 3, 2016 Street Rod Nationals at the Florida State Fairgrounds April 2, 2016 Treasure Island, FL April 10, 2016 Land O Lakes at the Caliente Resort Let us know if you’ve been to any of these shows and have any recommendations. We would like to know a participation interest level to one or more of these venues. Wayne also checked on the auto train to Virginia for a June ride aboard Blue Ridge Parkway…

AND you will not want to miss listening to our guest speaker, Bev Eddins, a former Louisiana Deputy Sheriff. Bev will share some humorous and frightening experiences as a female law officer. Many of you already know Bev as the current Program Chair for the downtown SPYC Woman’s Club.

We are planning for next year’s informative and enjoyable programs. Join our social group or renew your membership by contacting our Membership Chair, Sally Roth, at TouhySally@aol.com Dues are $30.00 for our entertaining activities from June 1 to May 31.

This ride sounds amazing, let’s get it confirmed and on the calendar!

Breaking News...

Brian Smith suggested we contact the SPYC regarding a burgee for the SPYC Riders Club to be displayed at the Downtown Clubhouse along with other SPYC Club burgees. The SPYC Member Services Coordinator assisted us in getting the ball rolling. A beautiful cruising motorcycle was submitted and proofs were designed and sent out for approval. The first proof had “SPYC Riders Club” in print under the motorcycle. Although we will not be able to place the verbiage “SPYC” on the burgee, according to Club rules, the NEW burgee will reflect “Riders” under the motorcycle logo. Club Management is arranging for a public display of all “Clubs Within the Club” burgees. We are very proud to introduce the NEW SPYC Riders Burgee!

On February 20th, the Broad Reachers had a “winter” party at the home of George & Joanne Simmons. Everyone brought a dish to share and a lot of fun was had by all. It was a beautiful evening and their home was a lovely setting for the party. March 5th, the Broad Reachers finally got on the water for a practice day of racing. Anne O’Dell, Jeanette Erb, Barbara Arnold, and Dee Gill sailed three races... without marks. No winners were declared that day, but it was a great day for a sail and an enjoyable lunch afterwards. The ladies have decided to purchase some new Broad Reacher shirts. At lunch Tricia Billings presented a few samples to choose from. So this spring... Look Out!! The Broads will be sporting some new attire!! The Rainbow Regatta is just around the corner on Monday, April 11th. The Salty Sisters are hosting this year at the SPSC. by Peter Privitera It was truly a bright sunny day on March 5th-6th when some members greased the runway at Sebring, Fl. Winds were 15k but favorable to observe the historic 50th TransAm Series Championship and the annual SVRA (Sports car Vintage Assoc) races. In spite of minor car kisses, the event was fast and exciting; especially for Andy Evans who motored his Aston Martin around the course without incident. Also attending was his wife Donna Bauer, Peter and Sandy Privitera, pilot Payton Yon with his son and daughter-in-law, pilot David Oliver, and Pilot Ron Bernot and wife Rita. From time to time the club selects events for pilots and flying enthusiasts to attend, so contact me and I’ll put you on the list to be notified. Call (813) 263 4806. Seeing Florida by Water … It’s April and the weather (cross your fingers) will be perfect for small boating! We are planning yet another trip and this time to Homosassa Springs, where the water is somewhat protected from wind. Target date is Saturday, April 9th. For more information and to sign up, email me at barbara.weller221@yahoo.com or call at 941-356-1680. Power Boat Competition (“PBC”) is exploring bringing small boat racing (Cocktail Class Wooden boats) and P1 Powerboat Racing to St. Pete. The Cocktail Class boats are 8’ long wooden boats with 6 or 8 horse power engines … and they ARE FUN! A few weeks ago I went to Smyrna Yacht Club to check out the Governor’s Cup regatta where boats from all over Florida, and the country, gathered for the 3rd annual race. Racing a course approximately the size of a football field, these little boats provided lots of fun for spectators and racers alike! These boats can be built in your garage as a family project, or finished boats are available for purchase. Check out these boats at: http://groupspaces.com/ccwbra P1 Powerboats, stock cars of boat racing, are an international racing boat in the class raced during the Suncoast Offshore Races at Sarasota. More information on these boats can be found at: http://www.p1superstock.com/ If you are interested in more information or getting involved in promoting any of these racing options, please call me! Finally, PBC recognizes its historical roots in predicted log racing. We are happy to announce that the NEW predicted logging is not your daddy’s predicted logging! Use all your marine electronics and toys. We are planning a “road rally” on the water! Stay tuned for more info about this! Hope to see you on the water … Barbara Weller

Sue Davidson and Rosemary Sherman sailed in the Thistle Regatta while Selga Sakss, Trisha Birkenstock, Gloria Davis, and Gina Bowden-Pierce worked on the Signal Boat. CHARM PRAM PARTICIPATION SERIES: Three races were held on February 17th for the Prams and Ideal 18s Participation Series. On February 24th, the weather was foul, so the Ideal series was cancelled and Coach Todd Fedyszyn had a chalk talk about starting tactics with the Pram sailors in preparation for the upcoming FWSA Rainbow Regatta on April 11th.

Please help us congratulate Mercedes Cardenas Mura for achieving March 2016 Employee of the Month. Mercedes started at our club in July 2014 as a kitchen steward and was instantly a star employee excelling at every task she was given. Mercedes has been promoted to the Garde Manger department in the main kitchen and has excelled within that role; as well as artfully preparing cold salads, sandwiches and buffet displays. She is a self-starter with strong work ethics and never requires supervision. Everyone enjoys working with her. Mercedes never hesitates to give a helping hand to anyone, in any department, at any time. All of this she does with a loving smile. Next time you see Mercedes give her a high five for a job well done!
