COMMODORE’S LOG Chapter 2 The Commodore's Ball, Blessing of the Fleet and the United States Adult Sailing Championship are now behind us. It is truly amazing how fast time passes by with our heavy schedule. I would like to remind all that the Americas Disabled Regatta is scheduled for December 1st thru the 3rd. Just around the corner are two of our premier ocean regattas, the 2018 St. Petersburg-Habana Race (February 28th-March 3rd, 2018) and the Regata de Sol al Sol (April 27th-May 4th, 2018). I participated in last year's event and the trip to Cuba was unforgettable. This year is the 50th year and Golden Anniversary of the Regata del Sol al Sol race to Mexico, which should be a very well attended and enjoyable celebration in Isla Mujeres. Even if you are not sailing, both of these events are great fun to participate in! On the local scene, the Club Championship sailed with our new fleet of J70's. It is my pleasure to congratulate David Mendelblatt (our new Treasurer), who is now the Club Champion!

Soon it will be Christmas so check out the holiday events going on Downtown and at Pass-a-Grille. The Christmas Cookie Decorating at Pass-a-Grille on Saturday, December 9th, Children’s Christmas Party & Brunch downtown on Sunday, December 17th, and the Santa Christmas Parade will pass by the Club on Saturday, December 2nd…the children and grandchildren love these events! Speaking of Christmas, the collectible publication of the "Ray Kendall Williams Photo Collection: 1930-1937" is available through the Club. We are very fortunate to have a publication such as this to share the rich history and incredible photos of the St. Petersburg-Habana Races of years past. These books are perfect for the coffee table and make great Christmas gifts! As I write this chapter of the Commodore's Log, I am preparing to go with the Wing Shooters on a three day trip to Georgia; the many clubs within the club will keep you busy. This is the last publication before January 2018, so I would like to take this opportunity to wish all the members of St. Petersburg Yacht Club a safe and enjoyable Christmas & a Happy New Year. See you at the Club,

Joseph W. Klingel, Commodore

The Mission of St. Petersburg Yacht Club is to encourage and support yachting, and provide a comfortable social environment for our members and guests, while preserving and enhancing the Club’s traditions and prestige.

Yachting Information & Ray Kendall Williams Photo Collection Book

E W AT

The St. Petersburg Yacht Club has also published a 12x12 hard cover, 172 page book that captures 440 photographs taken by Ray Kendall Williams. The “Ray Kendall Williams Photo Collection” spans photos taken almost 30 years ago of the St. Petersburg to Havana Race. The race began in 1930 and ran through 1959. After a 58 year hiatus the race was reinstated in 2017. Ray’s photographs captured the yachts, their skippers and crew members. Many have been identified. We still need member's help in the ongoing project to identify the photographs. Additionally, a volunteer team is working on an Optimist Pram exhibit to go into the St. Petersburg Museum of History in February 2018. These projects couldn’t have been done without the unwavering passion, hard work and collaboration of our club volunteers. Thank you very much. – Donna Sue Marks, Yachting Information Chairperson

The outgoing Captain, Selga Sakss welcomed all the Salty Sisters to the 66th Annual Meeting on October 4th. After hearing reports from last year’s Officers and Committee Chairs, Selga gave the gavel and Captain’s pin to our newly elected Captain, Gina Bowden-Pierce. Selga congratulated Brooke Taliaferro and Barbara Watson for a job well done instructing this new class.

Our guest speakers this year were Commodore Bob Birkenstock and Waterfront Director Shawn Macking. Selga thanked the Commodore, members of the Board, and the Club management for all their support of the Salty Sisters. Selga also thanked Shawn for all the help he and his crew have given the Salties this past year. This year’s Spirit Award went to both Helen Larsen and Janet Walker for “Exemplifying the qualities of contributing to the social aspect of sailing, good sportsmanship, leadership, organization, motivation, involvement, and attendance.” The Amy Joyce Uhler Race Management Award was given to both Barbara Arnold and Selga Sakss for contributing the greatest towards race management this past year. The Elizabeth Priestley Optimist Memorial Trophy was awarded to the Salty Sister who best exemplifies Betsy’s spirit of eternal optimism in “achieving or attempting the Challenge to achieve personal goals through exceptional character, as demonstrated on the water and in her life in the context of being a Salty Sister.” This year the trophy was presented to Carol Hansen, class of 2007. 8

The program year has gotten off to a fabulous start – first the one act comedies and plays presented by Joan Petitit and her cast. The October program meeting was an absolute fun fest. Our October Cruise was to Anna Maria Island on Halloween weekend—a first for many of us. We had 11 boats who made the trip, including 3 new fleet members and a few“iron dinghyers”. Our Port Directors, Ray & Charlotte Noyes, planned a great weekend for us. Friday night, after welcome docktails hosted by the Noyes, we had dinner at Ocean Star for Japanese cuisine and hibachi grill. On Saturday, some ventured into the quaint town for lunch and shopping. Later that evening we boarded the Monkey Bus (the high light of the weekend) for dinner at the Bridge Tender Inn in Bradenton Beach. On Sunday, the winds were so high that we all had to stay another day…oh, shucks! We all enjoyed the extended cruise, our last of the year. Thanks to everyone for coming, and to Ray & Charlotte for

This past month has been a busy one for the Wing Shooters. Aside from our weekly shoots on Fridays we participated in a couple of special events. Last year the Wing Shooters raised over $10,000 for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society’s Annual SPYC Fund Raiser. Our shoot this year was on October 28th and our own PC Bob Birkenstock won 1st place, individual score followed by Commodore Joe Klingel in 2nd place. Congratulations to you both!! Also, Breck Amicks team won 1st Place Team. Good fun and good shoots were had by all in an effort to help raise money.

November is the beginning of hunting season and this is a picture of seven of our men shooting ‘crazy quail’ in anticipation of the hunt. We shoot from an elevated platform and the clay birds are fired out from under us at random heights, angles, and speed. It’s very fast paced and mimics actual quail hunting. Some targets are thrown in multiples from the machine pictured at the lower right.

In November, it was my pleasure to coordinate once again this year’s Blessing of the Fleet after the Commodore’s Ball. The new Flag Officers and I blessed over twenty boats on the docks….fair winds and following seas for So much fun, we didn’t want everyone! to leave!

In December, there is no monthly meeting but please join us for our Annual Holiday Dinner on Friday December 8th instead as we celebrate our ventures and close out the year. Please note, our Monthly Meetings resume in January with a Dinner Meeting on Thursday, January 11th to wind up for another great year of boating. We invite our fellow SPYC members to come walk the docks with us for the Lighting of the Yachts and dock party on Saturday, December 9th. For all SPYC boaters out there, there’s still time to complete the FCYC Cruising Log 2017 to be eligible for one of the FCYC cruising awards. Contact the Fleet Captain regarding your submission, which is due after Dec 31st. Happy Holidays! I hope to see you on the water … Inquire or sign-up for our events on the SPYC Website, Cruising Fleet page. 10

(nobody purchased one). Once at Wynfield, everything was first class with two men to a jeep and six dogs. Dogs are only allowed to work in 15 minute shifts as they run the whole time. All meals and adult beverages were included and all three squares a day were laden with southern hospitality. Twenty-five members of the Golf Group played at the Bayou Club in mid-October. There were trees and breezes off the water that helped relieve an otherwise fairly toasty day. In first place at +3 were Susan and John Arsenault and their two guests. Second place winners at +3 (who lost on a match of most difficult holes) were Herb and Elizabeth Anderson and two guests. Finishing third at +4 were Isabel Shoenberg, Dave Evans, Jack Howard, and Dick Vazzano. On the par 3’s, closest to the pin was won by Martin Morris, Herb Anderson, Dawn Echart, and a guest. Amateur Radio Club

Welcome back all our active pilots, crew and supporters! Most of us have had a busy season but have been able to maintain our interest throughout the long hot summer. Other individuals have realized that sitting on a hot runway waiting for ATC clearance small planes can get very hot and uncomfortable, particularly low wing planes. Many pilots have come to appreciate Cessna 172’s as a good place to find shade.

The Amateur Radio Club meets Monday evenings for Happy Hour at Pass-a-Grille from 4:00-7:00 pm. The Net starts at 5:30 pm.  Amateur radio operators can join in on their smart phones via Echolink, search for AREC; this is a conference node that will connect you to WD4SCD-R.  When you first connect to AREC there may be a 20 second or less delay to connect, after that it will work as normal. Please join us either in person or on the Net!

Summer always is a high point for many aviation enthusiast and pilots. With the July EAA 65th Annual Fly-in Convention in Oshkosh this year, there were 590,000 attendees and over 10,000 aircraft covering everything from sport and recreational, to astronauts, and everything in between. If you have never been put this on your bucket list. Several of our members (including myself) are still struggling along to our next certification. Tracy Livingston, at the last meeting, gave us an interesting view of being“under the hood” as he works toward his B29 Superfortress FiFi flying over Oshkosh Instrumentation Rating; my understanding is he is now landing at the correct airport! Peter Privitera reports several club members attended the AOPA Static Display Convention last month, held at Davis Island Airport AOPA Tampa Fly-in Peter O’Knight Airport (KTPF), and then lunched at the Yacht Club next door. On display was the latest and greatest equipment and airplanes. Interesting enough the new amphibian ICON A5 which was on display is the same model Roy Holliday, the famed MLB player, was flying when Oshkosh from the air he recently crashed in the water off Florida; a reminder for all to be safe up there. On a lighter note, lunch at the Davis Island YC was superb and we would encourage all club members to take advantage of the proximity to visit the airport and Yacht Club. We will again be holding our Flying Club Christmas Party, so please check your e-mails for the date once we have confirmed. December 2017 Smooth Sailing 13

Vintage Motor Club

The Vintage Motor Classic has become the most prestigious show of this nature on the West Coast of Florida. Individual trophies were presented in multiple categories by Commodore Joe Klingel, Vice Commodore Jim Byrne, and Rear Commodore Michael Blacker. The Mayor’s Choice Award was also presented. The Mayor once proclaimed, “This event has become the place to be seen.” Quite an honor!

Celebrating it’s 16th year! The Vintage Motor Classic was a huge success on November 5th. This most publically visible St. Pete Yacht Club event hosted over 5,000 attendees and 280 vintage vehicles, with participants throughout Florida and as far as North Carolina. Chairman Rick Brooks and his committee of over 100 volunteers, arrived at 7:00 am on show day, prepared the park, registered and escorted vehicles to their assigned area, and then judged these vehicles for the trophy and awards ceremony. $1,789 was raised for charity Pet Pals Animal Shelter. Thank you volunteers!

The 2018 Vintage Motor Classic is scheduled for Sunday, Nov 4th, 2018. Join us and participate in the fun and camaraderie. Do you like vintage cars, boats and motorcycles? Consider joining the Vintage Motor Club (part of the Clubs Within the Club at SPYC) and remember, you don’t have to own a vintage vehicle to join if you love them!

Happy Holidays from the Riders Club!

The Riders Club received a tremendous response during the SPYC Member Appreciation Event on Sunday, October 23rd. Wayne, Bob and Douglas did a great job manning the Riders Club table and providing handouts to SPYC members who stopped by. We were pleased to meet three SPYC members who own motorcycles and were interested in the Riders Club; looking forward to riding with you in the near future! 16

Smooth Sailing December 2017

At our October Riders Club meeting, our Riders enjoyed a surprise guest. Rick Noyes, owner of three Harley Davidson dealerships in North Carolina and younger brother of Riders Club member Ray Noyes. Our club members enjoyed speaking with Rick about the new Harley Davidson lineup. Our rides to Sweetwater Road in Zolfo Springs (with a lunch at Brothers Tacos) and the Beach Bash Motorcycle Rally in St. Pete Beach (sponsored by Bert’s Barracuda Harley Davidson), will be completed before this newsletter is published. Don’t miss out on our future ride plans including visits to Florida Wineries and Fisherman’s Village in Punta Gorda. Contact any member for more information on the Riders Club and to join us on a ride. President…............... Wayne Bond Vice President…....... Seeing Florida By Water … Happy Holidays All!!! There was no “official” boat trip in November …but the weather was beautiful! So Heber and I scouted out beaches for lunches and anchorages in our area. Non-official exploratory missions will continue as the weather holds in December; we will post last minute excursions on the website and do e-blasts if we have your email address. Come join us if you can.

2018 will bring more changes! I will be posting on our club website this coming year!!!!! Expand the Day Trippers activities. This is our small boat (trailer size and dinghies) group that takes day trips in the area. Open to all members of the club, we visit local clubs and restaurants. This year let’s rev up for some beach parties and go inland to Homosassa Springs and Mount Dora! Some will be trailer trips and maybe overnight. Love to have you join us when you can!

These ladies are working hard and looking good!! Thank you to SPYC member Loie Polinsky for volunteering to teach the “Dance to Health Class for Women over 50”, which was available during October & November. The class was a huge success! Keep an eye out in Smooth Sailing for more future Dance to Health Classes in 2018. 2018 North American Invitational. SPYC is hosting the 46th Annual NAI in 2018 from October 23rd – October 27th.
