COMMODORE’S LOG Chapter 4 Ok, I know the holiday season is over and we’re in a new year poised to move forward to realize our objectives. However, I need to tell you about the New Year’s Eve celebration in the Commodores room that everyone, except 36 of us, missed. We were met by Marc and Pierre attired in “Black Tie” (as we were) who seated us at a cocktail table with our invited guests for Champagne, and a delicious variety of Hors d’oeuvres passed by suitably dressed servers. In a proper measure of cocktail time, we were summoned to our correctly set dining table where Christophe explained the exquisite menu options, and Jane guided us through the many sophisticated wine selections. The five course meals were exquisitely prepared and impeccably served and removed from the proper side. After dessert we were retired to the lounge and Katie’s Piano Bar for a festive time of singing, caroling and Auld Lang Syne; leaving with just enough time to see the fireworks from the Tiki Bar’s upper deck! The aim of this story is to point out that it is clear to me there is not a similar local venue providing an elegant quiet ambience combined with outstanding gourmet food, wine and proper timely service at the high levels we experienced at our Club on New Year’s Eve; or at the Gourmet Wine dinner or Wing Shooter Christmas dinner. However, common sense dictates that we cannot afford to offer this full blown experience every day, as it would cost too much and no longer be special – moderation and balance is the spice of life. I am nonetheless inspired to instill some of the basic elements of this high level dining into the Club’s day-to-day restaurant operations. Therefore, our New Year objective will focus on making every meal served a little more special in both quality and service. Our members are special and they deserve it! During earlier years working on Club committees and Long Range planning task groups, one of the objectives was to improve the quality of the communication to the membership. Recently, I realized that thanks to the evolutionary efforts of many talented staff people, today we enjoy a completely revamped Smooth Sailing focused on providing a photographic record of the past month’s events (BTW did you like Leah’s Year-in-Review?) all awhile the weekly emails and Facebook posts focus on upcoming events in a consistent user friendly organization, with links to the improved SPYC website. The

January 9th weekly E-mail to the membership referenced a new “Waterfront” website - organized by Shawn Macking and Corey Hall (www.sailstpete.org). If you want to explore the magnitude, depth and breadth of the sailing and on-the-water activities offered to SPYC members as well as the general public, I recommend everyone take some time perusing this outstandingly designed website. You will come away realizing the significant contribution to the quality of life in St. Petersburg that our Yacht Club makes. As we continue on through the Regatta Season, the regattas get more logistically complex. The Valentine’s Regatta for Junior Sailors in International Optimist Dingy (IOD) prams and Laser Class boats, draws approaching 400 contestants from around the world. The regatta is the USODA Southeast Championship which will serve as the international qualifier for 2018 spring racing teams and will also be used to determine qualification of competitors for the USODA Team Trials. Mid-February the Sailing World’s Helly Hansen NOOD Regatta will bring about 150 boats sailed and supported by about 800 people for three days of racing and socializing. By-The-Way, some inquiring might want to know that NOOD is an acronym for National Offshore One Design. At the end of the month we will be hosting the Quantum J/70 Midwinter Championships attracting about 60 boats for three days of racing. Hopefully some of our members will be using our fleet J/70 to enter into the competition in their own backyard! Immediately after the J/70’s leave, the St Petersburg - Habana race competitors begin the prerace festivities and registration on Sunday, February 26, with a St Petersburg – Habana Race History Dinner with pictures from 1930 through 1959 when the race was discontinued. So, have an exciting February! Trisha and I look forward to celebrating Valentine’s Day and seeing you around the Club!

Robert Birkenstock, Commodore

The Revival of the Original St. Petersburg – Habana Race Brief History ~ The St. Petersburg-Habana Race was first sailed in 1930 by an eleven boat fleet. By 1935 the fleet had doubled in size and this event was attracting the best ocean racing yachts from the US Eastern and Gulf coasts, the Great lakes and Cuba. The race was sailed over the same 284 nautical mile course from 1930 through 1959 with the exception of three years of World War II, when racing was cancelled, and 1958 when political conditions in Cuba required a diversion of the fleet to Miami. Despite the uncertainties, the 1959 race attracted a record 37 entries, but it was to be the last - until the upcoming 2017 revival of this challenging ocean race. How good was this race? Participants included repeat appearances by great US yachts such as Haligonian, Vamarie, Stormy Weather, Dorade, Blitzen, Babe, Ticonderoga, Carribee, Starlight, Windjammer, and Hoot Mon, and the

equally great Cuban yachts Ciclon (1st in fleet 1947) and Criollo (1st in fleet 1957). After the demise of the Habana Race, the St. Petersburg to Fort Lauderdale Race was inaugurated in 1961and the fleet quality and quantity momentum from the 1950’s carried over into the fabled Southern Ocean Racing Conference series known as the “Circuit.” Disagreements over yacht handicapping rules led to the demise of the Circuit as then constituted in the late 1980s, but the lure of offshore racing lives on. The re-established St. Petersburg-Habana Race offers todays sailors the opportunity to challenge and be part of this offshore racing heritage. Note: The use of “Habana” rather than “Havana” for the name of this event is consistent with the race literature generated by St. Petersburg Yacht Club in the 1930-1959 period. A detailed history of this event may be found in the SPYC Centennial (1909-2009) Book whose contents are available online at www.spyc.org.

SPYC Wins 2nd Place in Master Driver Team Race Regatta by Janet Walker- Chair St. Petersburg Yacht Club was proud to host the “11th Annual Master Driver Team Race Regatta” on January 14th-15th this year, with teams from Corinthian YC, Newport Harbor YC, New York YC, St Francis YC, St Petersburg YC and Texas Corinthian YC (with all skippers being at least 45 years of age). After a very competitive, hard fought, three round robin events over two days… SPYC came in Second Place! Once again we were edged out by Newport Harbor Yacht Club who has been the First Place winner for four consecutive years. Third Place went to Corinthian Yacht Club. Races were sailed on a port box course with two boats racing against another two boat team. Races were short and exciting with lots of tactics and excellent boat handling skills. The new Club J/70s were a great success! All the sailors complimented our new fleet of J/70s replacing the Sonars. Results are listed at www.SPYC.org. On December 8th, the Golf Club met for their annual Christmas extravaganza, replete with awards and all kinds of fun. We had a wonderful turnout! The much anticipated male and female “Golfers of the Year” were announced with trophies awarded by last year’s winners ~ Jack Howard and Nancy Strite. Drum roll please…the 2016 Golfers of the Year were Larry Heinkel and Susan Arsenault. Congratulations to this year’s winners! The party included a rousing version of “The 12 Days of Christmas”, with each of the 12 tables fully enacting their section of the song. What a hoot! Larry Heinkel entertained us with his standup comedy routine. And no holiday party is complete without a visit by Santa! Entertainment was provided by Maggio Total Sound, keeping the dance floor fully occupied. It was a fantastic party enjoyed by all. We are kicking off 2017 by playing at some of the nicest golf courses this area has to offer. Our schedule includes: • Jan 17: Bardmoor 11 AM • Feb 10: Cove Cay 11 AM • March 20: Countryside County Club 11AM If you are a golfer, you may want to consider joining us if you haven’t already! We are a fun group of golfers that spans every skill level. All of our outings are scrambles and regardless of one’s level of play, each is able to contribute in some way to their team. If you are interested, please contact Susan or John Arsenault (SueatCP@ aol.com). You won’t be sorry…join the Golf Club! In addition, in April we will be hosting our annual golf outing at the St Petersburg Country Club for SPYC members and guests. It will include a barbecue and prizes. So even if you are not a member of the golf club, be sure to contact Susan Arsenault and MARK YOUR CALENDARS for:

The Christmas Luncheon was a festive occasion in which the Nauticats entertained us with a medley of songs. Bill Pickering came as Santa and Commodoreable Trisha Birkenstock entertained us all by sitting on his knee and telling him her Christmas wishes.

Even though we are already into the New Year, it’s a good time to reflect on the last year and those special events recently passed. Putting schedules aside, it’s so enjoyable to be able to join up with fellow cruisers for impromptu cruises. We had such a fantabulous time over the holidays, going to Captiva during Thanksgiving with the Hopper’s, Iurillo/ Petrella’s, Merriman’s and Weller’s. And later on to Passa-Grille over New Year’s with the Chaney’s, Noyes’ and St. On the Beaches of Captiva -Kowalik’s, Merriman’s, Jean’s. Holidays or “any days” Weller’s, Hoppers, IurilloPetrella’s are great times to spend with fellow cruisers, passing the sands of time while boating.

Salt Water Anglers by Capt. Wayne Andrews Mike Collins took me up on a short notice invite to the Saltwater Anglers for an offshore trip in December. Loaded with Pinfish, white bait and shrimp, we worked our way west on a foggy day. Tried unsuccessfully for Hog Fish in 40’, then moved out to 35 miles offshore in 120’ and found a few fire trucks. Brought home five Red Grouper, released a multitude of out-of-season Red Snapper and Trigger Fish, and plenty of Short Grouper.

Mike Collins lands a nice Red Grouper

Great day! The Saltwater Anglers meet on the second Wednesday evening of every month at the downtown clubhouse. Please come join us at our next meeting on February 8, 2017, or sign up on SPYC.org; click on the “Clubs” tab and scroll down to Saltwater Anglers, click on the Sign Up & Contact Info Form and get your email on the list. SPYC Flying Club visits Tampa Bay Soaring Club On Wednesday, November 30th at 11:00am, several members of the SPYC Flying Club took off from Albert Whitted and headed north across the bay towards the Zephyrhills Municipal Airport Club members Patrick Kay, Michael Gulley and Russ Savela touched down at the ZPH glider port to meet up with Cassandra Morecroft and other friends.

Don’t miss another of our exciting rides!! Everyone is welcome at our Riders Club meeting where we discuss and plan our next ride venues. Join us on the 3rd Tuesday of each month at Downtown SPYC at 6:15pm.

The Tampa Bay Soaring Society has operated glider flights for more than 30 years in the area. You can check out more about their club on www.tbss.us. That day, each of the members had the opportunity to make several flights. The weather was marginal at the start of the day, but after the rain and winds subsided the conditions were ideal for introductory and training flights. If any members are interested in trying out and experiencing gliding the TBSS aircraft on Wednesdays, Saturdays and Sunday please contact Russ Savela at 617-818-4641.

Flying Club Christmas Party The Flying Club held its annual Christmas Party with 40 members guests in attendance. A special thanks to Lora Fulmer for organizing and setting up the party room, to John and Gretchen Wolfe for supplying the location at 400 Beach Drive and to the hardworking SPYC barman Dave who worked for tips. There was plenty of good food and drinks supplied by Flying Club members. The Flying Club also provided supplies, plates, soft drinks (etc.) from our general fund. A great time was had with lively aeronautical conversation, and the pilots showing off their skills with a paper airplane building and flying contest. Longest distance flight won by Sonny Croy - but I think we fell short of the Wright Brothers. We are looking for new members, and you don’t need to own a plane or even be a pilot; the Flying Club actively helps new pilots follow the path to a pilot’s license. Many discounts are available to Flying Club members, anyone interested contact Peter Privitera at 813-263-4806. Next meeting held at Pass-a-Grille clubhouse on Feb 12th - cocktails at 5pm, meeting 6pm with optional dinner at 7pm. New members welcomed.

Riders Club Members enjoyed the December Ride to Don Garlits Museum of Drag Racing. The route to Don Garlits in Ocala included some scenic winding roads that surround Brooksville, with the return trip made via the highway with a few raindrops in our wake. We are currently planning a ride to Steinhatchee, Florida, where we may just kick our feet up for the night and get a bit of fishing in! We invite your feedback on this ride including participation and date suggestions. Feel free to contact any member for more information. We hope to see you at our next meeting!

Seeing Florida By Water … January started off with balmy, even humid weather. But, just in time for the Day Trippers’ first cruise of 2017, Mother Nature brought on chilly weather and high winds! The Day Trippers weathered this minor setback by meeting in the Heritage Lounge, enjoying the Club’s Sunday special turkey plate, outstanding lobster rolls and exchanging ideas for future destinations. We came up with some exciting places to visit; and will post these on our club webpage and in future articles in time for you to plan to join us! In the meantime, we rescheduled the cruise to O’Maddy’s Bar & Grille in Gulfport for Sunday, February 26th at noon RAIN OR SHINE, RSVP to me by February 22nd to reserve seating. EMPLOYEE OF THE MONTH JANUARY 2017, Mark Deas We would like to extend a heartfelt Congratulations to Mark Deas, who won the title of “Employee of the Month” for January. Mark has been a part of the Yacht Club Staff for 27 years, since November 1989. He has been an integral part of our Garde Manger department. Marc stepped into the role of Lead Chef Garde Manger when his mentor retired after 50 years of service here. His dedication to the Yacht Club is demonstrated daily through the care he takes in his work; from beautiful Charcuterie presentations to plating up salads for 100’s of people attending events and everything in between. In his free time he enjoys spending time with his family and first granddaughter who was born in July. Congratulations Mark, keep up the phenomenal job!!!

EMPLOYEE OF THE YEAR - CODY SPRUCE Congratulations to Cody Spruce, SPYC’s 2016 Employee of the Year! As the Sailing Center’s Fleet Maintenance Supervisor, Cody is responsible for much of the “behind the scenes” operation of the Club’s worldclass Sailing Center. This past year, Cody took on the immense task of commissioning ten brand new J70 sailboats, which have proven to be a very popular addition to the Club’s fleet, and handled the process with ease. We could not ask for a more dedicated employee, and we are so proud to honor Cody with this esteemed award. Congratulations Cody for an amazing job!!

EMPLOYEE OF THE YEAR RUNNER UP - CHRIS KING It is with great pride that we announce Chris King as the 2016 Employee of the Year runner up! Chris has been part of the Yacht Club staff since November 27, 2012 and known too many members as valet Chris: or as Mr. Reydams calls him, “The Parking Lot Engineer!” Chris has not missed a scheduled shift since joining the SPYC staff, and is always willing to cover an extra shift. Chris also goes above and beyond for all members and guests. Whether it’s helping them out of their vehicles, fixing a light or flat tire, helping out when someone locks there keys inside their car, or just simply giving directions inside the building or back home after an event. Chris prides himself on knowing he is the first person that members and guests speak with and his professionalism sets the tone for a great SPYC experience. Please help us congratulate Chris for earning this prestigious award!! February 2017 Smooth Sailing 17
