ON TAMPA BAY

SAILING CAPITAL OF THE SOUTH

COMMODORE’S LOG Chapter 03 The Holidays are over and Regattas abound! The Valentines Regatta will be held February 6-7th, followed by the NOOD (the National Offshore One Design) Regatta held February 12-14th. Then next up is the Quantum J70 ‘s Midwinter Championship which is held from February 25th to the 28th. With approximately 50+ entries in the NOOD and 35+ entries in the J70’s Midwinter Championship, Tampa Bay will be quite a site to be seen in February. The Ides of March will bring us three more regattas: Pussers Rum Cup, Thistle Midwinter’s and the Winter Lightning Championships, which will also kick off the clubs Twilight series. This is just a sample of why we are known as the Sailing Capital! These regattas will bring plenty of sailors to our Club, Downtown Waterfront, Beach Drive and the Bay Area. So expect plenty of activity in your club and please give a warm welcome to all.

We are very excited about the addition of our newest Club, the “Fishing Club,” spearheaded by Intermediate Member, Rich Andretta. The first meeting will occur on February 10th to lay out a plan for fishing excursions, tournaments and social meetings. We feel this is a great addition and will enhance the great benefits we have as members of SPYC. For more information about getting involved, please contact Amy Spencer our Membership Director. In December, the Early Bird Dinner was rolled out at Pass-aGrille and is offered every night of the week from 5 – 6pm, with the exception of Tuesday when it is closed. The Downtown Clubhouse fills in the gap on Tuesday and now offers the Early Bird Dinner in Grille 1909. For those who enjoy dining early, this is a great offering; a three course dinner for just $12++ per person. Another great addition is the extension of Tuesday night Happy Hour in the Heritage Lounge. Happy Hour will be available from 4 – 7pm on Tuesday evenings during the months of January and February. Lastly our Commodore Room continues to get rave reviews, and a new player piano is the most recent addition to this room. It’s a Great Day in Tampa Bay!

The Membership Challenge is proving to be a great success. In December we had a net positive 6 memberships, so keep talking to your friends and colleagues about joining. Don’t forget we have all those various Clubs within a Club. Salty Sisters, Women’s Club, Golf Group, Cruising Fleet, Cruiser Navigation, Flying Club, Amateur Radio Club, Intermediates, Broad Reacher’s, Wine Society, Wing Shooters, Ladies Beach Club and the SPYC Riders Club.

Article By: Fred Stansberry The Wing Shooters Society started the New Year with a bang, by participating in the Rough Riders 2016 Charity Shoot on January 9th. SPYC was well represented by six four-man WSS teams. They competed with over 300 shooters from organizations and individual shot gunners from around Tampa Bay. WSS teams performed well and brought much positive attention by flying the SPYC burgee on all of our carts. This charity shoot has become an annual event for our members and compliments our mission of supporting worthwhile local charities. In addition to the shooting competition, we all enjoyed a continental breakfast before the shoot and afterwards a beer & barbecue low country boil. The Rough Riders and their sponsors provided all of the food and refreshments.

SPYC Wing Shooter Society Members gather around the “Teddy Bear at the Rough Riders 2016 Charity Shoot. Left to Right: Jim Montgomery, Jerry Coletti, Fred Stansberry, Bob Birkenstock, Jeff Locker, Les Bauer, John Worlein, Tom Hatton, John Hanner, Wayne Andrews, Ed Wilson, and John Arsenault. Bending: Doug Williamson and Sandy Schoenberg. Kneeling: John Cartier, Mark Foster and Tom Daniels.

The Wing Shooters Society is still accepting new memberships, and invites other SPYC members with an interest in shot gunning sports to join us. Contact any WSS member or Jack Cartier at jack@cartiercpas.com, or (727) 822-8800.

Cruising Fleet News

IN T HE

Welcome Aboard!!!

In December we wrapped up the 2015 Cruising Fleet program with the Annual Awards & Holiday Dinner. It was another enjoyable event; we spent the time reminiscing with everyone about the cruising activities over the past year with a slide show and we had our usual round of The Twelve Days of Christmas. As Fleet Captain, I was honored to be able to present our 2015 Participation and Port Director appreciation awards. We had quite a large participation over the last year and it continues to grow each year. That’s quite encouraging to see both new active boaters joining our cruise events and former boaters getting reengaged with the Fleet.

for download on the SPYC website.

In addition, it was my pleasure to present the 2015 Vildibill Award to Barbara & Heber Weller in recognition of their commendable contributions to the Fleet and SPYC boating activities. As you know, Barbara was my predecessor having served as Fleet Captain for the 3 years prior and continues to serve as Power Boat Competition chair. Both Barbara and Heber are active Fleet members, serve on the Fleet Committee, volunteer as Fleet Port Directors, and have offered their vessel Clifton as “Blessing of the Fleet” Blessing Vessel for several years - just to name a few of their contributions and accomplishments. They continue to bring enthusiasm, ideas, knowledge and experience to the Fleet, as well as provide great support to our Fleet and the club. Congratulations Barbara & Heber Weller!!!

For inquiries about the Cruising Fleet, or to sign-up for our activities or cruises, contact Member.Services@spyc.org, or Fleet.Captain@spyc.org, or use the SPYC website.

At the end of the year, many Fleet members took their own holiday cruise. Some ventured downtown, some to our beach location, and some down south. What a great way to end the year and ring in the new one. And to start off this year, I had the opportunity to venture over to Eau Gallie Yacht Club for the January FCYC meeting, which included an excursion to Embraer Luxury Jet customer service center. These bi-monthly FCYC meetings are so much fun. Not only do you get to visit fellow FCYC clubs and neighboring attractions, but you can also socialize and network with other club members and officers! Consider coming to one of these meetings and get to know your fellow FCYC clubs and members.

For all you cruisers out there (both power and sail), please take advantage of the FCYC Yachtsman Award opportunities including the new Founders awards by visiting any of the FCYC clubs and having your visit and mileage recorded on the 2016 FCYC Cruising Log, which is available on the FCYC site along with other details. For Monthly Meeting reservations, contact the Catering Office at 727-892-6887 or 6882 or spyccatering@tampabay.rr.com.

I hope to see you on the water… - Angela Kowalik, Fleet Captain

Commodore Richard Winning to address the Cruising Fleet in February

Upcoming Events for the Cruising Fleet to enjoy: • Cruising Fleet Luncheon – Thursday, February 11, 2016. • February cruise to our downtown SPYC docks – Feb. 19-21, 2016. • Vessel Safety Check – Sunday, February 21. February’s Cruising Fleet Luncheon is Thursday, February 11, 2016 at noon. We are happy to have a special appearance by Commodore Richard Winning for our annual Commodore’s Address to the Fleet. We will also begin sign-up for our annual May Commodore’s Cruise at that time. We previewed this year’s Commodore’s Cruise shirt at the January meeting and are taking orders now for those shirts. Since our February cruise is to our own downtown SPYC docks, why not stop by on Friday or Saturday to say Hi to the Fleet! On Sunday, there will be a Vessel Safety Check. Contact the SPYC Dockmaster to sign-up for the 2016 VSC.

Connolly’s, Merriman’s & Kowalik’s at Captiva Yacht Club

Looking ahead, we alternate between a Luncheon and Dinner to encourage more and different participation in our monthly meetings. Our cruising and event calendar has been updated and always available 6

A gorgeous Florida day provided another enjoyable golf outing for our players. This time the venue was the North Course at Innisbrook. Winning team was Joe Hartman, Pam Gentry and Dick Vazzano. Second place was Dawn Eckhart, Jack Howard, Eric McShane and Mike McDonough. There was some mix-up in leaving the close-to-pin markers on the golf course, so prizes were given to 6 players who swore they were on the green!

Our speaker of the month was Bill Buttner, both Men’s and Women’s golf coach at Eckerd College. Bill played on the PGA Tour for 6 years and had five top 10 finishes. He has also led the Eckerd College men’s team to 4 NCAA finals. Having Bill as a guest is always a treat. He mixes humor with fact and golf tips with life tips and swears that women are worse putters than men, except, of course, in OUR Golf Group! Thanks to Helen Dewalt for arranging a variety of speakers for our meetings.

On a recent weekly Net, we had members call in locally on their radios; some called in from England, Scotland, The Villages and from south of the Skyway Bridge on Echolink (a Ham Radio internet app). So what does it take to get on the air? Take an easy test on radio rules, procedures and the use of a radio with a very little bit about the technology. Then an internet application or a $50.00 handheld radio. On a normal Monday at 5:30 pm outside at Pass-a-Grille you can watch and listen as one or more of us call into the Net on our handheld radios. Come and listen to hear what Ham Radio is all about. Our social network is our Net when we socialize on-the-air every Monday at 17:30 on VHF 147.030 MHz. Let’s all stay in contact from wherever we are in the world and have fun with Amateur Radio. ‘73s. https://sites.google.com/site/spycamateurradioclub/

The Broad Reachers celebrated the holiday season with our annual Christmas Party and Chinese Gift Exchange. We had a record 37 Broads and guests that day. Over a wonderful turkey luncheon, the girls drew tickets and began choosing their gifts. We had a lot of laughs as gift after gift was “stolen” from previous recipients until the “ownership” limit was reached for each gift. The party was quite the event of the year. Carol Hansen was the “MC” for the event and Captain Anne O’Dell was the photographer for the day. We look forward to 2016 and here are some of the upcoming events. In January there will be the FWSA General meeting hosted by the Salty Sisters, the Broad Reacher General meeting, our annual Mystery Race, a fun sail to Bird Island, and sailing to explore the new causeway bridge. In February we start training for the Rainbow Regatta and at that time we’ll select our team to compete. March through June will include the Captain’s Race, Nancy Lucas Regatta, Nona Bolster Race, the Friendship Race, a sail and picnic to Shell Island, and much, much more!!!! As you can see the Broad Reachers have lots of fun, so if you would like to join in, we are always searching for Saturday sailors who would like to come out and learn how to sail a Pram. For more information, please contact either Nancy Strite or Anne O’Dell.

SAILING NEWS: January began with a Participation Series. One will be for Prams and the other was for Ideal 18s in preparation for the Maggie Mug Ideal Series to be held at the end of February or early March. On February 26th, Coach Todd Fedyszyn will begin six weeks of Pram practice sessions on Wednesdays in preparation for the Rainbow Regatta. The regatta is to be held on April 11th at SPSC and is hosted by the Salty Sisters. SOCIAL: Our Holiday Party was a great success. A special thanks goes to the social committee: L-R Gail Falkingham, Nancy Vildibill, Bonnie Rohrbaugh, Karen Lieberman, Shelia Moore, and Ellen Pavone for creating such a great atmosphere. Karen’s slideshow of Salty events was outstanding. Our Christmas charities this season were the Free Clinic, Music Sweet Music, Family Promise of Pinellas County, and the Christmas Toy Shop. Salty Historical poster boards by Barbara Watson were on display for everyone to view. The boards depict Salty activities from the 1950’s onward. Barbara Weller and Judi Phagen gave Santa (Bill Pickering) the thrill of his life by sitting on his lap. Santa’s lap sitting was a popular event and our photographer, Bob Van Landingham, did a great job capturing the special moments on camera. Ms. Claus (Toni Smith) served a special drink called Milk Punch. The recipe for the punch was from Nancy Vildibill, and she called it Botox Punch because it freezes your face. Some Salty classes, such as, the Class of 2009 (Marilyn Wall, Nancy Kadau, Joanne Simmons, Jane Hubben, and Sigrid Lovfald) had their class photo taken. The Sassy Spinnakers, Class of 2012 (Jeanette Erb, Bonnie Drake, Els Wiemken, Nita George, Bonnie Cannard, and instructors Barbara Arnold, Gloria Davis, and Maridell Weaver), also took advantage of a great photo op. The NAUTICATS, led by Judy McFadden, sang a medley of holiday songs and their last number Let There be Peace of Earth, brought tears to many eyes as the NautiCats and the audience sang this song in unison holding hands.

Vessel Safety Check

E W AT

Sunday, February 21, 2016 10a - Noon All 3 SPYC Marina Locations (Downtown, PAG, Snell Isle) Register now to have an Auxiliary Coast Guard Squadron Examiner conduct a survey of your boat and motorized dingy safety equipment right at your slip to ensure they meet Coast Guard requirements for your safety.

Why do you want a VSC decal?

Boats that pass the examination are awarded a distinctive VSC Decal that alerts the Coast Guard, Harbor Patrol, and other law-enforcement agencies that your boat was found to be in full compliance with all Federal and State boating laws. Frequently, such agencies will not detain or board boats displaying a current-year decal that are otherwise operating safely.

To register, contact Dockmaster Adam Harnen at 727-822-3227 with your preferred time and location. Prepare in advance by reviewing the Online Virtual Vessel Safety Check at: http://wow.uscgaux.info/content.php?unit=V-DEPT&category=virtual-safety-check

Members and Employees We are very excited to announce our winner for the “2015 Employee of the Year” - Alysia Wenckoski! Congratulations! Alysia has been a part of the SPYC team since February of 2013. She is a valued employee and respected among her peers as well as by the Members. She is a wonderful asset to the Club and is willing to help out wherever it is needed. You can see Alysia all over the Club, from bartending in the Lounge, working Banquet Functions, or even outside at the Tiki Bar. Hopefully, our current weather is a welcomed change - although Alysia has been in Florida now a number of years, she went to school in Ohio so she has seen her share of cold weather!

His work ethic is one of a kind; as you may see him flying around the club moving chairs and tables like they are pillows. Dimitar is one of the hardest workers in the housekeeping department and within SPYC. He’s is always willing to learn and help others making him a true asset to the club. If you see Dimitar around the club, give him a high five for a job well done…Congratulations!!
