COMMODORE’S LOG Chapter 4 As we move into the New Year, our Club is bustling with activity. We start the year dealing with one of our most important issues, that being membership. A “New Member Reception” is taking place this month on Friday, February 9th. This event is to welcome all new members who joined SPYC from July of 2017 through January 2018. I would encourage these new members to invite prospective members and bring them along to the party! Members of the Membership Committee are also encouraged to attend. Speaking of membership, there is a new program designed to give members who have left the Club anytime in the past (in good standing) an easy path to re-join. There is a small window (now through April 30th) during which these former members can rejoin the Club for a much reduced reinstatement fee of only $500.00, plus pro-rated dues. We are hoping to see many of our past members rejoin. Please see the Membership Highlights page for further details on this exciting new program. I am sure many of you may have friends or acquaintances who were once members, and who would like to come back to our fantastic Club. Spread the word! Additionally, we have a very busy regatta schedule this year. The 2018 NOOD Regatta, hosted by the SPYC, takes place on February 16th -18th, followed by the Thistle Midwinter East Championship on February 26th thru March 2nd.

awards party will be held in Cuba on March 3rd. The Regata del Sol al Sol is also taking shape. This is the “50th Year & Golden Anniversary” of this great ocean race to Isla Mujeres, Mexico. We presently have 24 boats signed up and are expecting many more. All members are again invited to fly down and join in the week-long festivities. The race begins on April 26th through May 4th. Upcoming Regattas in March are as follows: March 9th-10th -Crown Car Regatta March 16th-August 30th - Twilight Series March 23rd-25th- Winter Lightning Championships March 30th - April 1st - Laser Gulf Coast Championships Plus, SPYC’s annual Yachting Recognition Awards Ceremony will be held on Tuesday, March 13th. This is a great opportunity to meet, greet and praise our members whose achievements carry the SPYC burgee and name to regional, national, and worldwide recognition. Hope to see you at the Club!

Joseph W. Klingel, Commodore

The 2018 St. Petersburg-Habana Race begins with our Street Party on Saturday, February 24th, and the start of the race is Monday, February 26th; The Mission of St. Petersburg Yacht Club is to encourage and support yachting, and provide a comfortable social environment for our members and guests, while preserving and enhancing the Club’s traditions and prestige.

The SPYC Junior Sailing Team was very well represented this year at the annual Orange Bowl International Youth Regatta, hosted by the Coral Reef Yacht Club in Miami. As usual, this was a must do event with sailors from all over the world and just under 800 youth sailors competing across all the different fleets. On the Opti RWB course, Bella Shakespeare was our top performer finishing in 59th place in the Gold Fleet. Also competing in the Opti RWB division were Kate Danielson, Dorothy Mendelblatt, Ava Shakespeare and Rosie Simpson. Competing in the tough 80-boat Opti Green Fleet were the Mendelblatt twins Adam and Reid. On the Laser course Ethan Danielson sailed as strong event finishing in 12th place in a very international fleet. Heather Kerns also competed in the Laser Radial Fleet. Blaire McCarthy and Emma Shakespeare sailed in a very competitive 29er fleet finishing in 8th overall. Over the Thanksgiving weekend in 2017 SPYC hosted the Laser 4.7 National Championships.

30 boats from all over the US, Canada and Caribbean battled in light air to take home the title. SPYC’s Cameron Delgado sailed a great event and was our top finisher in 3rd place overall. Cameron was followed closely by Anika Boicheff in 7th place, Guthrie Braun in 11th place, Ethan Danielson in 14th, Emily Allen in 17th and Emma Shakespeare in 19th. Earlier in December 2017, the SPYC Laser Team travelled to the District 13 Championships hosted at the US sailing Center Martin County. Guthrie Braun was our top performer taking home the title in the Laser 4.7 fleet. Also competing for SPYC were Heidi Hicks, Heather Kerns, Emily Allen, Colin Lawther and Ethan Danielson. The SPYC Junior Sailing Team sailed on home turf in the annual Valentines Day Regatta here on Tampa bay. More details on this popular annual race to be announced in the March Smooth Sailing newsletter. To volunteer either on the water or on shore, please contact SPYC Race Director Todd Fedyszyn at todd@spyc.org.

Yachting Information Committee by Donna Sue Marks, Yachting Information Chairperson Our docks, Club, and hearts are filled with regattas this month. The Valentine’s Day Regatta has an attendance of over 300 Youth Sailors from all over the country. The NOOD Regatta hosted by SPYC fills our bay with an assortment of sailboats in multiple race circles. The historical St. Petersburg to Habana Race will depart Monday February 26th to Cuba. Kudos to our Regatta General, Race Committee and many on and off the water volunteers! The Ray Kendall Williams Book launch party was a success! All books purchased in advance were available. There are still a few left of this one-ofa-kind hard cover photo book showcasing our St. Petersburg to Habana Race from 1930-1957. Bravo to Barbara Watson on this huge endeavor. Nominations

for our Annual Yachting Recognition Awards are being reviewed by our Awards Chairperson, Trisha Birkenstock, and her committee. Mark your calendar for the Yachting Recognition Awards Ceremony on Tuesday, March 13th. This month the Optimist Pram exhibit opens at the St. Petersburg Museum of History. Thank you to David Mendelblatt for his sleuth skills in finding a wooden pram for the exhibit, as well as spars and a rudder. We need a few helping hands to install the exhibit the last week of February, and are seeking sponsorships of $250 and $500. If you’d like be a contributor please reach out to dsmarks@viamediatv.com. Saltwater Anglers by Capt. Wayne Andrews

SPYC Saltwater Anglers brave the cold for some Year End and New Year Fishing On our last trip in 2017, a group went after Gag Grouper before the season closed on Dec. 31st. We ran out to 150' of water on Wayne’s World. Never saw a Gag, but, got our limit on Red Grouper, caught Scamp, Mango and Vermilion Snapper, Porgys, and a Kingfish. The four of us released at least 100 out of season Red Snapper and a short rare Black Grouper. Watch the video on the Saltwater Anglers Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/groups/ SPYCAnglers/. After the holidays Mike Collins, Chris Cameron, and Wayne Andrews went out in 40 degree weather inshore targeting Trout, Redfish, and Snook. Despite the slow bite, we were able to shake off some of the cabin fever brought on by dodging cold fronts and reel in a few fish. All you need to do to get in on the action, is get on the email list! The Saltwater Anglers meet at 6:00 pm on the second Wednesday evening of every month at the Downtown Clubhouse. Please come join us at one of our next meeting on February 14th, or March 14th. (Sign up on www.SPYC.org, click on the “Clubs” tab and scroll down to Saltwater Anglers, click on the Sign Up & Contact Info Form and get on the list.)

Welcome Aboard!!! … Although it’s the New Year, we still are remembering the great times over the holidays boating with friends or just being out on the water (because you’ll never know who you might run into). On our way to Captiva for Thanksgiving, we stopped over at Bird Key YC and ran into Roy & Jeannie Chapman, Bird Key Thanksgiving: Beil’s, and Andrea and Ken Beil. Some of us Chapman’s, Kowalik’s enjoyed an interesting game of Pickleball at Captiva. Christmas weekend we saw Ed & Gay Lazur at Clearwater YC (along with other SPYC members). Then on New Year’s weekend we visited with Ray & Charlotte Noyes, Glynn & Lavonda Chaney, and Ken & Corrine St. Jean while enjoying afternoon lunch on the PAG patio. On the way back Pickleball at Captiva: Brian, to SPYC, we ran into Camille Iurilla & Joe Andrea, Dianne, Camille, Debbie Petrella returning from Field Club. Back at the docks downtown, there was a lot of carrying on with fellow cruisers at the marina to ring in the New Year!

Rosemary Sherman and Iris Mastry

The last event of the year, the Candy Cane Regatta, was “sailed” in Prams. The three “no-rules” races were sailed and/or paddled around a special course gathering Christmas tree ornaments, candy canes, and poker cards. Thanks to Helen Larsen and Janet Walker for organizing the event. 1st Place in both the Christmas Tree and Candy Cane Races was Sarah Richards!!! Iris Mastry and Rosemary Sherman shared a Pram and paddled their way to 2nd place in the Christmas Tree Race. Everyone was a winner in the Poker Run.

The Broad Reachers came out in numbers for the December annual Christmas Party & Chinese Auction on December 16, 2017 and the General Meeting on January 6, 2018. At the Christmas Party, the Broads enjoyed a wonderful lunch prepared by Kerrie’s crew at Pass-a-Grille. Twentytwo gals had fun taking turns picking gifts and “stealing” them until everyone ended up with something to take home. Captain Joanne Simmons emceed the party and lots of laughs were had by all. There were some tasty gifts as well as a dancing Snoopy. This year’s “winner” was Tove Kullman with a total of five gifts being plucked from her grasp. The main excitement of the day was the fire drill caused by the popcorn machine. Everyone evacuated with no problems and as soon as the smoke cleared, the party continued!

Well, the Wing Shooters had a very busy couple of weeks, including a duck hunt and some cold weather shooting. Shooting became a little more challenging because of all the layers of clothing necessary to be comfortable in the early morning. Most of us have plenty of cold weather gear from years of hunting up north, so it wasn't too bad. This was half our Friday A.M. crew on a recent 50 degree morning at Sarasota Sporting Clays. Usually we avoid being in the Florida sun but this day we welcomed it! Gene Collins and Mark Foster found a duck hunting trip up on Lake Tohopekaliga in Kissimmee. They drove up in the afternoon for the evening flight of ducks. They had a great duck dinner, lodgings for the night, and then went out before dawn for the early flight. After an early morning hunt they returned for a great breakfast.

The guide and his faithful dog take Gene and Mark out by boat to their duck blind.

Gene and Mark were out on the lake before dawn waiting over a brace of decoys until the ducks started to fly.

Flying Club

The Flying Club Christmas Party was held at the residents lounge at 400 Beach, with thanks to our hosts Gretchen and John Tenbrockwolfe and Nancy Watson. We had a good turnout of 28 members and enjoyed a great Eunice & Tracy Livingston, Andy & Donna spread of food and drinks Evans, Peyton Yon & Judy McCain provided by the club and organizers Pete Privitera and Andy Evans, with members bringing their own contributions. Pete Privitera provided some fun with an aeronautical quiz, identifying the value of the exhaust valve from his newly rebuilt Lycoming IO540. Pete’s mechanic, Roy McClure, was there to judge accuracy, and some of us were close as we all appreciated the high cost of aircraft parts. No Christmas party would be complete without an award for the Long Distance Flying. We lined up all our eager pilots with their own unique designs and put them to the test…how far could they make their paper plane fly? Tracy Livingston proved his skills not only in the air, but with origami! In December, we welcomed new member, Juan Leon, who recently joined SPYC as a non-resident member. His main home is in Atlanta, but he uses his Cessna 310 regularly to fly down and enjoy St Pete as well as flying to his work with the Falcon Jets in Arkansas. It’s good to have such an active pilot amongst us. Juan will be attending the Cessna Twins Organization Seminar at Albert Whitted in February. This event brings pilots of the twins from all over the country to learn over 4 days indepth knowledge of their aircraft and systems. Other flying activity took some members following John Purner’s, A Pilots Guide, to the $100 hamburger with a flight over to Sebring…some asked if that price included fuel! The next meeting will be at the Downtown Club on February 11th, cocktails at 5:00 pm, meeting 6:00 pm, and optional dinner at 7:00 pm New members are always welcome.

Who are those guys?

The reward was a satisfying number of ring neck ducks for dinner and a beautiful Florida morning.

The Wing Shooters Society meet the second Thursday night of each month at the Downtown Clubhouse, and have dinner following the meeting. We shoot every Friday at a variety of venues around Tampa Bay. Come out some Friday and give it a try. There are rental guns available but you can easily borrow one of ours. 12

On display are the Boeing B-17 Fortress, Consolidated B-24 Liberator, and the two seater North American TF-51D Mustang Fighter. Or, possibly a ride to Lakeland and a tour of the Aviation Museum where there are 200+ old airplanes and cars on display. What a great way to spend an afternoon. Bob Kline, our retired pilot could lead this ride.

February is an exciting month for the Vintage Motor Club. February 8th is the first general meeting for 2018. It starts at 6:00 pm at the Downtown Club; share information and ideas, and talk with old friends. Not to mention, meet other vintage car owners and vintage car enthusiasts. You don’t have to own a vintage car to be a member of this Club Within the Club. Also, at this meeting you can learn more about how your vintage car could be featured in the new “Vintage Car of the Month” feature column in Smooth Sailing beginning in March.

We have already started pre-planning for the 17th Annual Vintage Motor Classic on November 4, 2018. It’s a major undertaking every year and requires many dedicated volunteers who donate many hours to assure its success prior to the day of show. We’ll give you more details in the upcoming weeks in hopes one of the areas will peak your interest. So, put February 8th at 6:00 P.M. on your calendar and we’ll see you at the Club. Remember, you don’t have to own a vintage car to join our club … you just need to love them!

Ray Noyes getting ready to lead the ride to Hickory Hollow Restaurant in Ellenton.

For you baseball fans, let’s ride to a spring training game. Norm Naughton would enjoy leading this quick ride to Tampa, Dunedin, or Clearwater, where we could take in a game and cruise back home in time for dinner. We also have some overnighters in the works including Cedar Key, Cape Canaveral and Sebring. You just missed our ride to Ellenton where our Riders enjoyed a sumptuous rib dinner. Ray mapped out a leisurely scenic route to the restaurant, which included Route 674 in Ruskin to Grange Hall Loop, an extremely rural road that gets a bit bumpy and accommodates only one vehicle at a time in certain areas. This road has a 30 mph speed limit which gives you some flexibility to take in the countryside. Come out and join us on our next ride. Contact any member to join in the fun, or attend our next meeting held on February 20th at 6:15 pm at the Downtown Club.

On January 10th the SPYC Golf Group played at Bardmoor Golf and Country Club and had a strong turnout for our outing. It was a bit overcast for much of the day giving our 34 golfers mild temperatures…it was perfect! In addition, Bardmoor went out of their way to make our day enjoyable with pre-paid lunch options between holes 9 and 10, and a complementary drink at the end of the day.

Come join us for fun once a month scrambles!

1st place at 2 under par went to Dave Evans, Larry Heinkel, Myra McShane, and Gerry Opeila.  In 2nd place at 3 over par were Linda Brown, Rick Brown, Theresa Matthews, and Tom Ritchel. A 5 over par earned Joe Hartman, Ron Hersch, Darrel Menscer, and Marty O'Bryan 3rd place honors. Closest to the pin on the par threes were Susan Arsenault, Bill Casey, Larry Heinkel, andTheresa Matthews. Ron Hersch won closest to the line with a ridiculously targeted drive. If interested in joining the Golf Group, please contact John and Susan Arsenault at SueatCP@aol.com. Mark your calendars: We have a number of upcoming group outings and the locations are in the process of being finalized: •

SPYC’S

EMPLOYEE OF THE YEAR 2017 AR OUN

KEITH GORDON

Traveling Burgees!

U

B

Congratulations to Keith Gordon, D SPYC’s 2017 Employee of the Year! TH E CL As a dishwasher/steward, Keith is not well known to the membership, but his work is noticed by all. One of the nicest things said about Keith recently was that everyone knew when he had been out sick for a few days – rarely does someone make such a difference in their department that the entire Club is aware when they are not there! Keith always has such a positive attitude and solid work ethic and it is appreciated by all of his fellow employees. He is a true team player and epitomizes the standards the Club recognizes in an employee we hold as our Employee of the Year – congratulations, Keith, on a job well done! These lovely Salty Sisters are all about the food & wine in Boston – September 2017.

EMPLOYEE OF THE YEAR RUNNER UP DAVE IRBY

We would like to congratulate Dave Irby as the 2017 runner-up for Employee of the Year. Another behind the scenes standout, as Food Purchasing Agent Dave is pivotal in keeping the Club stocked and insuring that we receive the best product for the best price, as well as helping out cooking on the line when needed. He meets the challenges of seasonality, pricing fluctuations, and changing menus with ease – always professional, cheerful, and timely – a pleasure to work with each and every day – thank you, Dave, and congratulations on your recognition!

EMPLOYEE OF THE MONTH JANUARY 2018 LEAH WIETER We would like to extend a heartfelt Congratulations to Leah Wieter as the January 2018 Employee of the Month! Leah began her employment with SPYC in July of 2015 as Member Services Coordinator and has continued to implement new and improved benefits for our members. Just to name a few of her many achievements: she continues to have success with the group excursions to the Straz Performing Arts Center which are always a hit; she has elevated the Yacht Club brand on all of our social media platforms; continues to improve the Club’s weekly E-news; she is focused on making Smooth Sailing better each month and created the “Anchors Aweigh” campaign with the introduction of Anne & Andy - hidden anchor game in the newsletter for members to find and receive a monthly prize, and she is always willing take on new projects. Most recently, she assisted with membership tasks including on-boarding of new members prior to the hiring of our new Director of Membership. Leah continues to bring innovative and creative suggestions to the Club to better the member’s experiences and she handles it all with a positive can-do attitude. Congratulations, Leah! We can’t think of anyone more deserving of this prestigious award as we begin 2018. Thank you for a job well done!
