COMMODORE’S LOG Chapter 3 I am hoping everyone had a wonderful Christmas Season and a great New Year’s celebration. Both the Downtown and Passa-Grille Clubs were in full swing during the holidays. I’d like to say many thanks to Chef Joseph and his staff for providing a fantastic spread of food throughout this special time of year. I am sure everyone noticed that the Clubhouse was beautifully decorated top to bottom and looking festive. As we proceed into a new year, we have a very busy schedule. To kick things off on Saturday, January 10th, you are all invited to a very special “Welcome Reception” for Susan Robertson, our new Director of Membership. Best known in the area as “Susan from The Pier”, she was the Marketing/PR Director for twelve years there, and most recently held the position of Director of Marketing for the Museum of Fine Arts here in downtown St. Petersburg. The party will be held in the Waterfront Room from 6:00- 8:00 pm - please come meet Susan and give her a warm welcome! We will also be hosting our “VIP Proposer’s Party” for those SPYC members who participated in the Member Challenge Contest and proposed a new member in the 2016-2017 fiscal year. The event will be held Saturday, January 6th as a “Thank You” for their continued support. I encourage all members to participate in the Member Challenge Contest that is ongoing for the 2017-2018 fiscal year. Further details are listed in the Membership section of this issue. Our Annual Gold and Platinum Party will be on Sunday, January 21st. My congratulations to all those long term, devoted SPYC members. This is followed by the Annual Holiday Employee Party

on Monday, January 22nd. Continuing with festive new year events, our New Member Reception will be held on Friday, February 9th and is open to new members who have joined since July of 2017. We encourage these new members to invite a prospective member to this gathering, as well as members of the Membership Committee are encouraged to attend. Our Regatta Season is in full swing this year: Master Diver Team Race -January 13-14, Valentine’s Regatta - February 3-4, Distance Classic to Venice Yacht Club - February 9-10, NOOD Regatta - February 16-18, Thistles Midwinter’s East Championship February 26-March 2nd and the 2018 St. Petersburg to Habana Race takes place February 26th, followed by the awards ceremony in Cuba on March 3rd. At this current time there are some 22 boats signed up for this historic race to Cuba. Further details on the preliminary activities prior to the start of the race can be seen on page 11 of this month’s newsletter. We are also closing in on another great ocean race, the Regatta del Sol al Sol. This is the 50th Year & Golden Anniversary of this fantastic race to Isla Mujeres. We already have 20 boats signed up and are expecting many more. Hope to see you there even if you are not sailing. All members are invited to fly down and join in the festivities. As in the past, it will be a week-long celebration in Isla Mujeres. See you at the Club,

US Adult Sailing Championship, Mallory Cup 2017 ON

Way to go SPYC for hosting the US Sailing Adult Championship, Mallory Cup 2017!!!!!! The following was directly reported from Scuttlebutt Sailing News, November 12, 2017: “The action was fast and furious on Tampa Bay this week. Twelve teams in J/70s representing their respective Regional Sailing Associations (RSA) enjoyed the speedy and highly entertaining racing format, as well as the spectacular weather and racing conditions at the 2017 U.S. Adult Sailing Championship, hosted by St. Petersburg Yacht Club. Sailors enjoyed a variety of conditions throughout the week, including light air and sunshine to big breeze and rain. Thirtyeight races were completed throughout the weekend.” (Scuttlebutt Sailing News, 2017) “Congratulations to Carter White (Portland, Maine) and his team composed of sailors from Sail Maine representing the Northeast Sailing Association, who came out on top in an exciting finish on Sunday. White’s team included Michael McAllister (Portland, Maine), Henry Cole (Freeport, Maine) and Fiona Gordon (Portland, Maine). “We had a lot of breeze today, at times, and changing conditions throughout the event from 6 knots to 20 knots. There was a little bit of everything for everyone and the race committee did an excellent job.” (Scuttlebutt Sailing News, 2017) “Sailors were greeted with rain, wind and waves for the final day of racing at the U.S. Adult Sailing Championship for the Mallory Trophy. Seven races were completed to round off the championship series. Great work by the St. Petersburg Yacht Club’s waterfront team who were quick on their feet to repair breakdowns throughout the weekend and keep sailors racing.” (Scuttlebutt Sailing News, 2017) “The league racing format offered sailors quick and competitive races, on-the-water umpiring, no discards, and an improved viewing opportunity for spectators. Every race counted, so consistency was a major factor. Races were approximately 15 minutes in duration.” (Scuttlebutt Sailing News, 2017) “First place team was presented the Clifford D. Mallory Trophy and received entry as the U.S. representative at the Sailing Champions League World Qualifier. The top three teams received US Sailing medals – Gold, Silver, Bronze. Teams representing the Southern Yacht Club, Edgewater Yacht Club, and James Island Yacht Club earned the Staton J. Peele, Jr. Trophy for sportsmanship.” (Scuttlebutt Sailing News, 2017)

Snipe Florida State Championships 2017

Our Snipe One-Design Fleet hosted the annual Florida State Championships on November 18th & 19th.  The race committee headed by Gloria Davis was challenged, but came through with flying colors.  There was no wind on Saturday and the fleet had to be towed back to the dock.  On Sunday four races were sailed in gusty winds ahead of an arriving front.  Regardless, a good time was had by all.  The winner was USF alums Kevin and Ashley Reali; Kevin is currently the coach at Eckerd College.  SPYC members Steve Lang and crew Megan Hostetter finished 4th.   Snipe Fleet 801 has been the SPYC one-design dinghy fleet for 40 years.  Snipes are raced all over the world, and our fleet members often travel to international regattas.  The fleet has three loaner boats, so if any SPYC members would like to try one out please contact Steve Lang.

Happy 2018! It’s a busy month and we have several opportunities for members to join in the excitement. Join us for the Ray Kendall Williams Book launch party on Wednesday, January 17th. If you purchased the book in the pre-sale event your book will be available at this time. We have a few more copies available for our membership to purchase as well. Come to the party and get this one-of-a-kind hard cover photo book showcasing our St. Petersburg to Habana from 1930-1959. Bravo to Barbara Watson on this huge endeavor! The deadline for our Annual Yachting Recognition Awards is January 15th. Submit nominations to Awards Chair - Trisha Birkenstock at trishab@tampabay.rr.com. Toot a fellow sailor, race management, cruiser and yachting industry contributor in front of their peers. We are looking for financial sponsorship for the Optimist Pram museum exhibit that opens next month at the St. Petersburg Museum of History. If you’d like be a contributor please reach out to me at dsmarks@viamediatv.com. We are in search of some artifacts from the early Optimist days. The items you supply will be on loan and returned when the exhibit closes. We also need a team to join in the installation of the exhibit the last week of January. Bring your drill, hammer and extension cords. We always welcome the help. What a great way to kick off the New Year!

America’s Disabled Regatta 2017 ER

Some folks say this is SPYC’s 21st year…others say 24th year hosting this regatta. It was an honor to have sailors from Canada, Ireland and many US states attend this regatta from December 1st – 3rd, as they competed in single-handed 2.4mRs, and three-person Sonars. There was very little wind the first two days. Sailors, families, and race committee personnel spent time catching up and sharing war stories. On Sunday, December 3rd, a day with very light air, they managed to get in three races. The 1st place Sonar racers were our very own team: Diane Fowler with crew JP Creignou and Loren Hoffman. 2nd place: Rick Doerr with JJ Davidson, daughter of Salty Sister Sue Davidson, and Brad Kendell. 3rd place was our Irish competitor, John Twomey and his crew. The 2.4mR winners were: 1st Bruce Millar, Royal Victoria Yacht - Victoria, BC 2nd Peter Eagar, National Yacht Club - Toronto, Ont 3rd Peter Wood, Nepean Sailing Club – Ottawa, Ont

Amateur Radio Club

We wish everyone a Happy New Year!! Amateur Radio Club members meet every 3rd Monday at Pass-a-Grille at 5:00 pm, in good time for the Net at 5:30 pm….come and join us! This is a unique method of communication when all else fails! It also allows email at sea without Wi-Fi. Mobile phones are “narrowcast” devices and not substitutes for a marine VHF radio. If using a mobile phone to call for help, nearby boats won’t hear your emergency call. Even if you call the Coast Guard, they usually have no way of knowing where you are until you tell them. On the other hand, VHF radio is a “broadcast” device which can be used to communicate with multiple boaters, as well as the Coast Guard. Signal from your VHF radio is tracked by a radio direction finder, enabling the Coast Guard to determine your approximate position; you must remember to turn your VHF radio on and tune to channel 16. Additionally, your mobile phone range is generally no more than a few miles and the max range of your VHF radio isn’t more than about 25 miles; depending on radio and weather conditions. Cruising offshore? Then consider carrying an EPRIB (Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacon) aboard. EPIRB is a satellite distress-alerting mobile radio communication device designed to alert search and rescue services in the event of an emergency. You can purchase and install an EPIRB on your boat or rent a portable one for a specific cruise; afterwards there is no extra subscription cost involved for using this emergency tracking system. Another method to communicate long distance is via SSB (Single Side Band) radio. VHF radio waves travel in a straight line (or line of sight) whereas HF waves from SSB radios travel in the ionosphere high above the Earth. You can reach the entire world with an SSB radio if conditions are favorable. SSB radios operate in marine frequency bands or in amateur radio (ham) bands, or both. The difference is primarily related to cost – and fun! Two licenses are required to operate an SSB radio in marine bands: “Ship Station” license allows you to carry the SSB on your boat & “Restricted Radio Operator” permit allows you to use the equipment. Both licenses have a fee, but no tests are involved. Using SSB in marine bands for email also requires a fee. To operate an SSB radio in amateur radio bands you need a General Class Amateur license, no fee for this license but written test is required - proficiency in Morte Code is no longer mandatory. Ham radio email is free and NO additional costs to communicate with thousands of hams around the world. You are cordially invited to attend the SPYC Amateur Radio Club monthly meeting at Pass-a-Grille on the third Monday of every month to learn more about SSB and other radio communication topics, as well as receive advice on test preparation to become a ham. What a great December and end of the year celebration. We wrapped up the 2017 Cruising Fleet program with the Annual Awards & Holiday Dinner, reminising about cruising activities over the year, and we had our usual round of The Twelve Days of Christmas. It was also a pleasure to present our 2017 Participation and Port Director appreciation awards to so many active cruisers. We are a great group! In addition, Nancy Vildibill joined me to present the 2017 Nancy Vildibill Award to Tim & Dianne Connolly in recognition of their commendable contributions to the Cruising Fleet. Tim & Dianne served on the Fleet Committee, were Fleet Port Directors for several cruises over the years and they continue to bring enthusiasm, ideas, knowledge and experience to the Fleet, as well as coordinate a boating group for their neighborhood (just a few of their contributions and accomplishments). To start off the New Year, since we will be at our own docks late in January, our January 11 Program is about the cultural arts of downtown St. Petersburg. Florida CraftArt Executive Director Katie Deits will present a talk about collecting fine craft and how Florida CraftArt has been at the heart of the artistic renaissance in downtown St. Petersburg. Did you know that all SPYC members are welcomed to attend any of our programs on a space availability basis? (Cruising Fleet members have priority. Reservations required.) •

Our first trophy races, the Jobin, Misfit, and Chilie were held in late October and early November 2017. The Jobin is only for our newest class of Salty Sisters. First place went to Marti Cochran, 2nd place to Heather LaLane, and Angela Kowalik took 3rd place. Anne O’Dell won 1st place in the Misfit with Dee Gill in 2nd, and Charl Hadfield in 3rd. Nancy Kadau won the Chilie for the second year in a row, with Ellen Pavone taking 2nd place. Congratulations to all!!!

On October 17th, the Salty Sisters hosted the FWSA Championship sailing in Ideals and 420’s. The Race Committee, Safety Ashore, and all the helpers did a wonderful job. There were six each Ideals and 420’s competing this year. Our   Ideal sailors - Helen 420 team, consisting 420 sailors - Els Wiemken Larsen, Sue Davidson, of Els Wiemken and & Rosemary Sherman Rosemary Sherman, Janet Walker came in first place!!! Sue Davidson, Helen Larsen & Janet Walker represented the Salties in an Ideal and came in second place. November 14th was the Salty Sisters first interclub of the year. There were ten Prams and three Sunfish. Sara Richards and Marti Cochran competed in Prams and Carol Hansen sailed her Sunfish for the Salties. Congratulations to Sara for coming 1st place in a Pram and Carol’s Sunfish placed third. Upcoming events to look forward are our annual Holiday Party and Candy Cane Regatta!!

December was a busy month. Our Travel Group went on an overnight excursion to the Gaylord Resort to enjoy their Christmas Wonderland, with a side trip to the Tiffany Museum. We also had a wonderful Holiday Party filled with joy through the young voices of the Lumina Choir. What a way to start the holiday season.

For our January 17 Program, Ellen Gerth will speak about searching oceans for artifacts, thought lost from history and interesting facts about Deep Ocean Exploration, as a former archaeological curator for Odyssey Marine Exploration. Ellen has spoken to other SPYC groups and has more to share about this fascinating subject, along with some new artifacts for display. Later in January, our Travel Group will be going to the free Fall Theatre on January 31st to see The Glass Beverly’s Awesome January Program: Menagerie (reserve MJ Hand – 60 Points! SPYC Saltwater Anglers Get In On The Mackerel Run Gary Spivack, Bill Mann, and Wayne Andrews took Cody McGuffin, founder of Veterans Fishing Foundation, out on Gary’s Bertram for a day on the water so we could get to know each other. Cody’s foundation organizes fishing events for veterans and may be a good fit for the Saltwater Anglers. Salty Sisters Gwen Mann and Debbie Walcutt did well fishing with Salt Water Anglers Bill Mann and Steve Walcutt on Bill’s Boston Whaler. Also pictured is Steve’s grandson Robert, who experienced his first Gulf fishing trip; having moved to St. Petersburg from Peru in the past year. The catch: 4 King Mackerel, 16 Spanish Mackeral, and one Bonita - not bad for a 3 hour outing! The fish are moving inshore as the water cools and the bite is on, please join us! This past month, the Broad Reachers have been busy sailing in Interclubs all around the area! November 1st – Katie Rodgers sailed in Venice, hosted by the Bitter Ends. November 14th – Donna Papa and Gwen Mann represented the Broads Katie Rodgers sailing in St. Petersburg. Gwen earned her in Venice Flipper charm after she capsized, bailed, and then continued to sail in the next race! November 16th – Carol Hansen and Katie Rodgers sailed at Treasure Island. Carol tied for 3rd place. November 17th – The Broad Reachers Gwen Mann & Donna Papa hosted their first Interclub of the year. Joanne Simmons and Marti Cochran represented the Broads and Joanne came in 1st place!! Thanks to PRO, Carol Hansen and her Race Committee, Barbara Arnold, Betty Hurley, Anne O’Dell, and Jeanette Erb with Safety Boat crew, Nancy Dunn & Debbie Walcutt, for a job well done.

December 4th – Joanne Simmons and Sara Richards competed in Dunedin, hosted by the Windlasses. Joanne took 1st place with Sara coming in 2nd. December 2nd, eight Broad Reachers raced around Bird Island with Barbara Watson and Katie Rodgers coaching in the Safety Boat.

Upcoming in January, the Broad Reachers look forward to hosting the FWSA General meeting welcoming sailors from nine other clubs. So much to report! On November 15th, 16 players challenged themselves at the University Park Country Club.  The course was loved by all and was in Bristol condition.  Lunch was outdoors in glorious weather.  First place went to Fred Alberg, Connie Smith, Martin Morris, and Herb Anderson.  Second place went to John Arsenault, Tom Ritchel, Bill Protz, and George Kinemond.  Closest to the pin on the par threes were Tom Ritchel, Jack Howard, Jay Marshall, and Fred Alberg…It was a perfect day for golf! On December 5th, 18 brave golfers got up early in the morning and traveled to Innisbrook.  It was a beautiful day and the stunning course was in great condition.  It is a challenging course, but we are so lucky that they let us play it each year for such a low price.  First place with a score of +1 was Tom Ritschel, Roger Gooch, Herb Anderson, and George Kinemond.  Second place with a score of +3 was Martin Morris, Jack Pyhel, and Ed Wilson.  Third place with a score of +10, and won by a match of cards, was Jay Marshall, Joe Mansir, and Dick Vazzano.  Longest Drive was Tom Ritschel, and closet to the pins were Jay Marshall, Martin Morris, and Tom Ritschel.   Finally, at our party on December 7th, Karen Lieberman and Herb Anderson were honored as Golfers of Year. Congratulations Karen and Herb! Mark your calendars: • Bardmoor, Wednesday January 10th at 11:00 am, with a fee of $50+ which will include free lunch at the snack shop. The Wingshooters Society shoots shotguns regularly every Friday at a variety of venues, all within an hours drive from the Club. Usually 12-18 men get out routinely and shoot about 100 rounds. Here’s a picture of Ken Ernst impressing PC Birkenstock, Montgomery while shooting from an elevated station at Fish Hawk Sporting Clays in Lithia.

PC Brickley hit them both to the amazement of several fellow shooters. It’s the cajoling and heckling that make for a great day out… shooting is just the bonus!

Kent Wilson, Tom Hatton (our Grand Pooh Bah), Ed Wilson, and Mark Foster are just happy to be driving around on such a great sunshiny day.

Breck Amick’s form is an example of how a properly fit gun helps the shooter to consistently mount the shotgun and break more clays. If it does not come up the same each time, you will lose more birds than you get.

Flying Club A Christmas Flying Tale

A friend of ours recently decided that he would volunteer to fly some Christmas cheer to needy folks on a remote island. Many pilots joined in and were allocated various tasks. Our friend, owning an older aircraft that had done cargo duty before, was given the task of delivering a small but fully decorated Christmas tree. The plane had a large storage hold under the belly, and with some coaxing the One of our Senior Members out for a spin tree was massaged in. Flying high over mountains the plane got a pretty good buffeting on the way to its destination. Checking the instruments he saw a warning that the cargo door was not closed properly. This was not uncommon and he thought little of it and began his decent into the small island airport where he would be met by the gleeful recipients. Down on the field the group of locals gladly helped unload when asked,“where’s the tree?” Our galant pilot pointed to the underside of the aircraft and realized the cargo hold was not closed and was now completely empty! He sadly apologized and slunk away to get coffee before heading back home. Sitting there in the FBO a woman and her excited child came in, the lady told our pilot how her daughter was so looking forward to a tree this year and that there seemed to be little chance of one showing up in their house. Mom had said that Santa would bring a tree (not wanting to tell the child they really could not afford one). Then on their way to the airport sailing down out of the sky came a “small but fully decorated tree” and THUNK!! landed perfectly upright in the ground….. “thank you Santa”… the girl smiled…our pilot said, “it was my pleasure.” Happy flying and have a wonderful new year!

When all was said and done, lunch at the Islamorada Fish Co. next to the Bass Pro Shop capped off a great day. Home by 2:30 pm for the “Honey Do List”. Come out and try it. You do not need a shotgun. You can rent or borrow one of ours.

We are skipping through our program year at a fun filled pace. The holiday party on December 4th was packed with fun and “edutainment.” Marine Ed Zaleski, Pinellas County Toys for Tots Coordinator, spoke of Toys for Tots history and the Pinellas County organization. We collected a huge table of gifts for children 0 to 12. Lito Cortez, jazz pianist, played a variety of seasonal favorites. It was a very festive get together, putting us in the holiday mood.

One of our New Year’s Resolutions is having several fun events throughout the year. Come to our first meeting on February 8th at the Club at 6:00 PM. Bring your ideas and suggestions for our upcoming gatherings. Want to go to a vintage car museum? Participate in a Drive-In? Guest Speakers? How about you? We know there’s vast knowledge among you. Join a member panel and tell us your experiences, good and bad. Oh no! Did your vintage car break down when you were traveling? Tell us how you solved that problem. There’s a million stories about you and your cars! There’s great “know how” right here in our club membership. Come and share it with us. How often do you get to say, “It’s all about me”? Well, it is! Right now! Come and join us. This is your Club Within the Club at SPYC and… you make it what it is! It’s never too early to mark your calendars for the 17th Annual Vintage Motor Classic on November 4, 2018. Remember, you don’t have to own a vintage car to join our club … you just need to love them!

Mary Howe had a really great MJ hand recently. If she had gotten it during a tournament, she would have added at least 50 points to her overall score. She’ll have an opportunity to try again at our February 5th Annual Mah Jongg Tournament. Good luck in the tournament everyone – still time to practice!! You won’t want to miss our January 15th program meeting – we’ll be playing re-gift BINGO. Bring a gift you received but don’t want for re-gifting; it will become a BINGO prize - one women’s extras are another women’s treasurers!!! Seeing Florida By Water … Happy New Year!!! There was no “official” boat trip in December … we saw our first cold fronts of the winter blow through … just in time for the Lighting of the Yachts and the local boat parades! Brrr… but our boaters are hail, hearty, and undaunted! Our lighting went on! Congratulations to all participants. The Awards Dinner was delicious and fun as usual. Congratulations to PBC Award Recipients Maurice McGough (NAI representative), Gary Spivak and Juliette Clark (P1 Support boat), John and Nancy Dunn (P1 Support boat), Ken and Corrine St. Jean (P1 Support boat/participant), Ed and Isabel Hannah (participants), Richard and Judi Phagan (participants), Elwyn and Carol Segrest (participants), Kent Larson and Marcia New (participants), Joe and Ginny Sadler (participants), Ray and Charlotte Noyes (participants), Chris and Sally Plonsky (participants) and Heber and Barbara Weller (P1 Support boat/participants). Power Boat Competition

Happy New Year from the Riders Club! Did you “resolve” to ride that motorcycle more in 2018? We’re here to help you accomplish that New Year Resolution.! You will not want to miss our Tuesday, January 9th ride, led by Ray and Charlotte, to Hickory Hollow Bar-B-Que in Ellenton. This is definitely a local favorite offering Bar-B-Que, Brunswick Stew, good old home cooking, and believe it or not… fantastic crab cakes! The ride will depart from the Skyway Bridge at 10:00 am; contact any member to join this ride. February we will be cruising to Cape Canaveral for a tour of Brevard County and its’ rivers and beaches. Also, we will possibly schedule a ride back to Cedar Key where our Riders thoroughly enjoyed an overnight visit a few years ago.

We are having a planning meeting January 30, 2018 at 6:00 PM and are looking for committee members! If you can, we’d love to have you participate and bring your experience and knowledge to the table. In November 2017 our Riders completed a ride to Zolfo Springs and a feast at Brothers Taco Express. Cruising through back roads, and beautiful Florida countryside, we even went off route and found a fun side road that added even more enjoyment to this excursion. Our Riders are always ready for a “Pop Up” ride, and at a moment’s notice we’ll be off on a quick cruise. Join our Riders Club so you do not miss out on the spontaneity and fun! Everyone is welcome to join our planning meetings, held on the third Tuesday of each month at the Downtown Club at 6:15 pm - our next meeting is January 16th. We hope to see you there!
